About Deputy Atoms
THE MIGHTY ATOMIC POWER
Once a young, athletically-built, tall Caucasian male with short, unkempt black hair and blue eyes, Shaun Adams is now Deputy Atoms, a being of living energy in the form of a brightly glowing white-blue humanoid. The Deputy's atoms are constantly being split and re-formed by his body, making him an ongoing example of nuclear fission and fusion, and granting him extraordinary power. However, he fears that this process is not only making him unstable, but is also affecting his mind and his humanity. Making matters worse is the fact that many of those around Deputy Atoms fear that he is extremely dangerous and radioactive, further driving him away from normal human contact and forcing him to don a metallic containment suit. But Shaun's discipline is strong and he has vowed to not only remain human, but also to use his powers to defend the world.

Backstory

Who were you before?
Shaun Adams was a member of the Halcyon County Sheriff's Department Explorer program, which offered training and practical experience to teenagers interested in a future career in law enforcement. Polite, friendly and very quick to help, he was well-respected and liked by his fellow explorers and officers. During an attack on the city by Redshift; an organization which sought to rule mankind, composed of supervillains named after celestial bodies (such as planets, moons, or stars, Ariel and Oberon to name a few); Shaun was on a ride-along with Deputy William Wakefield. Both officers abandoned their squad car in order to help get civilians to safety, carrying the wounded and directing evacuation efforts, but when the group came across Redshift's villainous leader aiming his 'Atomizer'; an experimental weapon designed to take down even the greatest of heroes by breaking them down into individual atoms; at Wingblade, the protégé of one of Halcyon City's paragons, Shaun leapt into action and tackled the villain, causing him to drop and break the weapon. While Shaun's bravery saved the life of Wingblade and perhaps many more, the destruction of the Atomizer caused its power source to discharge into Shaun's body. The world watched in sadness and horror as Shaun faded, his molecules dispersing. The Sheriff Explorer's last words were, after saluting Wingblade, "Just doing my duty, miss." Later, Shaun would be honored with a police funeral, and the Sheriff's Department would create an award named after him to be bestowed upon any Explorer who goes beyond his or her duties.
When did you change? What caused it?
The world believed Shaun Adams to be gone, but he was still around. Like a ghost, but more. After a month he unconsciously reconstituted himself in the same spot where he had 'died', molecule by molecule, having absorbed the energy from the Atomizer. Although Shaun would argue that he didn't die at all, he did undergo a death of sorts, but also a rebirth. Where once Explorer Shaun Adams stood, there is now Deputy Atoms, a being of pure energy with amazing abilities.
Who, outside of the team, is helping you understand your new body?
Shaun has reconnected with Deputy William Wakefield, the deputy he was with during the attack on the city. Although neither are scientists, together they work to understand Shaun's powers and how to safely live with them.
Why don’t you just try to hide yourself away?
Shaun was already committed to helping people before his accident. Now that he has powers, he's rededicating himself to the cause. Besides, as a being of living nuclear energy who no longer needs to eat, drink, breathe, or sleep, he doesn't have much of a life outside of crimefighting and other superhero work. However, he does occasionally consider hiding himself away, considering the danger his abilities pose.
Why do you care about the team?
The team reminds Shaun of his old Explorer buddies, but he also feels a strong sense of duty to protect them, even if he doesn't necessarily like some of them. On a lighter note, they're also some of the few people who are willing to put up with the threat of possible radiation poisoning, although Shaun has assured them that he does NOT emit radiation (and a geiger counter proves it).

Wingblade knew Deputy Atoms before he changed.
During an attack on the city, Deputy Atoms, then Shaun Adams, saved Wingblade's life. The event would play a key role in his transformation.
Imagine comforted Deputy Atoms when he was at his lowest.
Although Imagine isn't human, she is trying her hardest to fit in, just like Deputy Atoms, and its always been encouraging to have someone to share the journey with. During a time when Atoms felt farther apart from humanity than ever before, she gave him the Theta Suit, and with it, the chance to walk among humans once more.
