'Easy' encounters let the PCs shine (and, sometimes, heroes should shine) and give us a chance to show off different playing chops. If every encounter is a challenge then it can become a grind (for example, since joining this adventure, almost every single enemy has given El a condition and/or stat loss).

I also rack my brains. knowledge (dungeoneering): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
And gesture to my companions behind, a raised fist which then points ahead. We should be more mobile than this thing: any ledges, pits, roadblocks or other terrain to take advantage of?

I stroll forward from further down the passage, dropping an arrow back inmy quiver as I walk. Selveshanaea weaves around me as we walk, uncomfortable in these depths. "Well met. The road draws near and every extra sword-arm is keenly needed." As I draw near, Dashel should be able to see a half-elf in worn but well-maintained travelling gear who carries a fine bow. A mountain leopard walking by her side. "We have all come from far places at Gallowsmith's call. I am Elesandira and this," I nod to the big cat, "Is Selveshanaea."

"I am more comfortable on the mountains, but speed is our priority. The darklands is too much of a maze for my liking but good dwarf-built tunnels might get us to the dark road more quickly." I look to our hosts, "What would be our quickest route to the scar which cuts through the sky?"

I peer around the new structure with a sigh of relief. perception: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (16) + 16 = 32 "We're chasing after a solution to all of these problems. A sage in Absalom set us on the trail. Have there been any changes to the landscape or strange features lately?"

"C'mon, Selveshanea." I set off at a run, Selveshanea darting ahead toward the caravan. Selveshanea won't get too far away that he is isolated but will look to get around and flank. I'll look to get into a good archery position.

Deciding that the bear is the major threat, I aim a volley at it. attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
I forgot Aspect of the Falcon: all of those attacks should be 1 higher.

DM Carbide - I shot deliberately at 220ft so that I would get another shot before they closed (c.50ft) according to your countdown. attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9

Thinking tactically, presumably Berbas, Duncan and Imizael's companion are our front line. Imizael is our primary caster but Berbas and Duncan can drop spells when needed as well.

Okay, I'll make a correction and cast gravity bow, then I'll fire on the beast when they're 220ft away, that's a second range increment for me. In other games the principle is to keep the same rolls, so I'll just re-roll the damage but I can re-roll both if you would like. damage 1 with gravity bow: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (4, 5) + 4 = 13 damage 2 with gravity bow: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (5, 2) + 4 = 11

"They're a hunting pack; that's an attack response. A very confident one." I pull my bowstring to my cheek, "Only two choices, Imizael: fight or die screaming."
Using Rapid Shot a little speculatively, interested to see how these animals respond. attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23

"Hmm, weapons out but down, I think." Then I realise the others might not have seen, "A man in metal armour, some kind of bear and more wolf-like creatures behind. Heading straight for us." That said, I cast aspect of the falcon, draw my bow and hold an arrow ready. When they draw near I will call out: "Hail and well met!"

We've got in a spaceship with some strangers and been dropped at the 5 King Mountaions. Presumably the rift is near the city of Elistia. We need to find it and destroy it. "Now that, that was extraordinary." I pat Selveshanea's flank reassuringly and make it clear that, although the hog looks and smells like food, it isn't to be eaten. Not even a little bit. "So, err, Duncan... do you know the area? What's Elistia like?" I gaze about with satisfaction and suck in lungfuls of air, "It's good to be back in the mountains. Even if they're not our mountains."
female Half-Elf Ranger 5 (Hit Points 49 Current 54; AC 18; Initiative +3; Perception +14)
I stare at the strange behaviour of the plants, "This is strange magic but, as long as it's on our side, I'm happy enough." Then I tread gingerly into the craft, "Why are we going North?" Selveshanea coils around my legs and I can feel the tension in his muscles so I reach down and stroke him casually "It's okay. Won't be long." I mutter reassuringly, either to the cat or myself.

Looking forward to getting to the ship, and resting long enough to recover all this ability damage. And interested to see how Carbide's going to get the new folks on board. Virtual high-fives to Duncan, Berbas and Imizael.

DMC, could I make a suggestion? I think round about now would be a good time to lose the GM-PCs. As long as we've got long-distance-larry feeding us the odd clue we'll probably get better RP going and be a bit more involved in the game. I found them really confusing and I think that will be the same for other new guys. Obviously, you know more about the longer-term plot and what they bring to the adventure, but it's worth a thought.
