"Just go ahead and kill these two. I'm dead if you leave me with them anyway," Elena calls out, delaying to see what the team does.
Sense Motive Elena follows along. "You can understand how strange this is to us, Aldern. Just a few days ago, we were fighting a nasty undead who looked just like you, in your own manor!"
"Well, Aldern was overcome with some sort of artful ghoul fever and was too far gone to be saved...," Elena chimed in, but cut herself off realizing the explanation wasn't going to do any good here.
Sounds good to me! I'm having a blast when I'm not ghoul fevered and dying!
"I told the boys about the boar hunt we had in sandpoint! They got very excited and made me promise to ask you about the next time you planned on heading out for a chance to commune with the flora and the fauna?". Elena waited here for a response, knowing if he didn't plan on heading out soon, she'd have to cut to the point, right here, right now.
Elena nods. "That's fine. We can ask him out for a hunt. If he agrees, we can get him away from the guards and see what he says. If we have to fight him, I'd rather be away from the city."
"Did you tell the guards we may need some backup if confronting him goes poorly? Last thing I want is them throwing me in cuffs again," Elena continues to grumble. "But, what the heck, I'm ready to confront him if the rest of you are. I say we tell him exactly what happened at the Misgivings and see his response."
"Jim, I think if the last couple days have proved nothing else, it has shown we have zero plan. Who knows, Jace might be on to something right now. But if he fails to learn anything, we might just have to knock on Aldern's door and ask to be invited in for tea and confront him with everything. We just might have to fight our way out of that place after," Elena grumbles as she stirs her drink with her finger.
Elena follows Jim's lead and tosses a good and a couple silvers into the collection dish. "We've dealt with more undead in the last few weeks than you could shake a stick at. Undead you can cut with a sword are one thing, but those blasted haunts are something else all together. I don't suppose anyone here is a trained hauntbuster, are they?"
Elena wasn't one for the religious hooha, but she wasn't sure she wanted to be left alone in this city, especially now that the guards knew who she was. She kicked herself for not going with Jace, but it was too late for that now. "Sure. I can toss a couple of copper in for a nice thought from Pharasma. Might hear a rumor or three along the way."
"I don't know if I'm the best for infiltrating. Jace is out talking to the guard captain. I'd hate to leave him with no idea of where we are. Here's a plan since we are spinning our wheels a bit. First we try to find Jace and do things the boring way, and see what his captain says. If we can't get any information that way, then I say we try Zie 's suggestion. We do have a key...why not let ourselves in and look around?". She waits on the others' opinions, knowing something needed to be decided soon.
"Alright, what's our plan while Jace is off talking to the guards? We could be good little boys and girls and leave things be until he gets back with a warrant or at least with some questions answered. That seems boring to me. Do we want to follow Aldern again?". She grabs a couple of hunks of bread and a piece of cheese and stowed them in her bag for a later snack. "So what do you say?"
Elena felt like a new person after getting a solid ten hours sleep. She made it downstairs to again meet with the crew over a warm breakfast. "Alright, yesterday I ran all over town on a wild goose chase and then almost got arrested for loitering. Today has to be better. Are we going to head back to the Foxglove's to knock and really press them this time? Other than that, I'm not sure how to proceed."
"Well, Jace, that was certainly unpleasant. So, where to now? Join back up with the boys? If we don't have any other great ideas, I think grabbing a room and getting a good night's rest would be the smartest play. I'm tuckered out, and I imagine the rest of you feel pretty similar.". She turns and looks around, trying to spot the remainder of the Traveling Circus.
Elena certainly wasn't pleased when the manacles appeared. "Well this just isn't right. What have my friend and I done that would make you want to detain us? I'm becoming less and less a fan of this city, to be honest. Why don't you take us to Aldern and he can confirm that he knows us."
Elena tries her same brand of patter on the guards. "Good afternoon, you two. I'm Elena and this is Jace. We aren't from the city, so forgive us if we seem backwards. We know Master Foxglove, Aldern, I mean. We were hoping to surprise him. No one seems to be home however. I don't suppose you'd know where he and his wife usually head off to during the day would you? I'd love to pop in to say hello," she again shows off her pearly whites to the guards. Diplomacy
Yep, when we are unsure what to do that bogs a PBP game down. Someone needs to take the lead and be decisive, but honestly I'm not sure what the best action is, so I've been hoping someone would decide for me.
"Hey there young man. We are new in town, and a touch taken aback by all these city customs. I have met Master Foxglove in the past and I was hoping to surprise him. No one seems to be home however. Fort save Elena follows along with the boys, not quite sure this was the greatest idea in the world, but she was stumped otherwise.
"I forget. What's the back side of this place like? Any accessible points there that might be out of view of every Tom, Dick and Harry walking down the street? Aside from rhat, I could make one of you Invisible and give you about five minutes to try and break in and come get the rest of us..."
Elena follows close behind. "Let's do it. We all know there's something not right happening here. Only way to get to the bottom of it is to break in and explore. If we can keep from being hauled off to jail, I think we will get our answers.". She turns and calls out to the others, "the rest of you boys coming, or are you going to sit there slack jawed?"
"One of you boys go get Jace. This is our chance and he wouldn't want to miss it," Elena whispers as she sees the woman leaving the home. "Its time to clear up this mystery!"
"Or maybe we can just sit down with the two of them and be honest this time. Tell him what we saw, ask him if he knows the name everyone uses to refer to Foxglove Manor in Sandpoint. If he doesn't know it's 'the Misgivings,' then we know he's an imposter and we do what we have to do then. That's just a random thought," Elena adds as she plops herself down on an empty seat
"That means he, or who ever that is, is still here. We could head back and poke around the house more. Perhaps Jim has learned something while we've been on this wild goose chase."
"A handsome nobleman. Typically wears a pointy hat. Dark hair. Wears a bracelet of rubies on his left arm."
"Cmon Jace, no sense in splitting ourselves up further. Jim will stay out of trouble I hope. Let's follow the dwarves to the gate. If anything, we can keep them out of trouble."
"And where did that Jim get off to? Was he following any of you? I sort of lost touch with all of you and I've not seen him in a long while."
Elena thinks for a moment, then talks to the boys. "Well, we look like idiots just standing here. Do any of you think you can find your way back to the Manor? I'm spun all around and don't think I could get us back there with a compass and a map! That's a pretty good deal on the veggies too, Zie."
The only AP I've finished via PBP was a nicely abbreviated version of Curse of the Crimson Throne. The DM did a wonderful job of hitting the high points and forwarding us through some of the background stuff. That was a great experience! If anyone wants to start a new AP, keep me in mind, lol. We've got finishers here!
Wow, done with 4 books? That's impressive! Congrats to the both of you on that accomplishment.
I am running a second level SoP caster in a game right now, and I'm really enjoying him so far. I'd like to get in another SoP game and try a different type as I'm a big fan of the system!
"Oh, we are just looking for a friend of ours. Fella named Aldern foxglove. He's a local and we aren't, so we were hoping to surprise him. I thought I saw him and we tried to catch up with him, but we country folk aren't used to the city and he's gone. The dwarf was trying to find his scent...you know, dwarves and their love of the dirt and rock. Well anyways, I don't suppose you've seen Aldern pass by today, have you?"
"Sorry, boys. Tracking's not my thing. I'm lucky I followed him as far as I did. The guy just vanished on me. I don't know where he got off to. We could go back and watch the home again, though. See if the lady of the house has left as well."
DM Spoiler: Elena was getting nervous by now, not being comfortable all alone in the new city. She might have been spotted for all she knows. She decided to push her luck for a few more seconds, and rushes through the glut of merchants, hoping to catch one more glimpse of Aldern before giving up the chase.
