Elariel was born over 100 years ago in the deserts of Osirion. Their oasis was along a trade route and as a child she found it fascinating to learn about the different peoples and cultures that passed through. For many years she stayed at her oasis and helped out with mundane, every day tasks such as sewing, construction and repair, and welcoming visitors. However, she grew increasingly restless and one day she joined with one of the caravans passing through the area, eager to see more of the world around her.
She soon learned that the group was heading to Wati to engage in grave robbing in an attempt to sell ancient artifacts for a profit. Elariel found this shocking, but also intriguing, and let them talk her into joining them. She was caught up in that world for a few years. As time passed, the guilt over what she was doing became more and more difficult to bear. Finally, a romance with one of her fellow grave robbers ended badly and, in a fit of frustration, spite, and guilt, she approached the authorities and gave herself up.
She was spared imprisonment by offering information that led to the arrest of her partners in crime and by surrendering all artifacts in her possession to the government. She ended up working for the Wati government for some time. Her roles included aiding in the capture of grave robbers (since she knew their ways) as well as helping the local scholars study the items that had been recovered. She even helped return some of the stolen artifacts to their rightful place. Turning her back on the criminal community earned her many enemies and many threats, but with protection of the guard and luck she managed to stay safe. Eventually, any remaining grievances passed away with time and distance - yet another advantage of the long lives of elves.
Her work with Osirion artifacts became known to a professor at the arcane academy Shelad Madrassa and he invited Elariel to attend as a student. Never having had any kind of formal schooling, she jumped at the opportunity to learn more. Initially her plan was to study history, but the school's main focus was the arcane arts and the more she learned, the more fascinated she became by the study of magic. Within a few months, she was fully focused on learning the arcane arts and had officially begun her journey toward becoming a wizard.
After completing her schooling, wanderlust struck again and she spent as much time as she could traveling. She earned money by transporting - and sometimes selling - merchandise and antiquities. Only this time they were acquired legally...at least as far as she knew! She eventually opened her own shop and alternated between running her shop in Katapesh and traveling to acquire or deliver more goods.
Many of her friends and family had spent time with the Mualijie elves in the jungles of Mwangi. They told her about a different kind of school there - one based on oral traditions. She decided to hand over control of her shop to her business partner and left to learn at the Magaambya. She remained there for many years. Eventually she met a member of the Pathfinder Society who recognized her hunger for discovery, exploration and magic and suggested she return with him to his home lodge in Katapesh.
Elariel took him up on the offer and then underwent even more training to become a Pathfinder. She is just now beginning this newest chapter in her h
journey.
