About Thorgund Smokebeard

Campaign Intro:

------------------
Description: This fiery-haired and bearded young male dwarf is clad in a fine scale mail over which he wears a short smoke-colored hooded cape. A satchel and a scroll case are slung around his shoulders and a bandolier holding various implements can be seen peeking from under the cape. All in same smoky color and etched with fiery runes. His surprisingly lean frame is matched by a youthful face, and a circular red tattoo* on his cheek along with a mohawk complete the image. Intelligent and ever-curious brown eyes track the world around him but the shaft of a warhammer and a fine steel shield strapped on his back suggest more a warrior rather than a scholar. A light crossbow and a bolt filled quiver on his hip only add to this image.

RP notes:Often fiery tempered, opinionated, and at times preachy Thorgund is not the model Dwarf at all. He questions the traditions, scoffs at the "wisdom" of the elders, and seeks new experiences with passion that is highly unbecoming for one of his uprising or his race. He is a strict absolutist who believes life is better experienced with a clear head and agile mind. He chafes against restrictions imposed by others and disagrees with the established Dwarven dogma. Why hide behind the walls of stone preaching to the choir when the world outside is filled with new ideas and potential followers. Not that he has much of a choice after being exiled. He is proud of his views and does very little to hide them. Currently he is seeking to educate others, especially Dwarves, about "true" nature of their origins and that of Torag.

RP Backstory: Thorgund's life began under an ominous sign. His birth took life of the mother and in exchange gave a scrawny thing with a strange red patch covering half of his head. The priests of the insular clan, his father among them, were quick to state the child was marked by the gods, but none dared to voice their doubts about just which god was after the mark.

This sense of doubt and uncertainty was only enhanced when the child matured for neither his mother, nor his father, nor anyone in their clans, had the hair and beard in the shade of red the child had. The birthmark itself grew to resemble a circular pattern of runes, but no priest was willing to say aloud that the runes themselves resembled writing of the hated giants.

Raised to be a priest of Torag as the tradition of his family dictated seemed to work at first. The clan somewhat tenuously accepted the strange looks as a sign of the divine. The father was a priest after all, and it was not in their way to question the words of the priests. The hours spent tending the great forges along with other training soon wore out the worst scrawniness, and the child excelled in this all as a proper dwarf should.

The trouble began with the other training. Now youth with a vivid imagination Thorgund was not content on accepting the words of the elders without challenging them. Even worse, he questioned the tenets of the very faith! Stating that their view of Torag was too limited. The last straw was when he found some forbidden texts of a madman connecting origins of the Dwarves and Giants, and formed a hypothesis that they both, especially fire giants, were once one and the same. A race that worshiped a form of Torag who lorded not only over earth but also fire. As seen in the volcanoes. According to him something caused a split to Dwarves who loved earth and metal while still respecting fire as seen in the forges, and fire giants who first and foremost were beings of fire but shared the respect for earth and metals.

This all was too much for the clan but instead of lynching him as a heretic they did something worse - from their point of view - they exiled him from the clan home and made sure all within the Dwarven lands would hear about the giant-loving heretic among them. Seeing this more as an opportunity than a punishment Thorgund now travels the world, preaching about the "true" faith in Torag. Despite the fact that most Dwarves turn a blind ear to his words at best, and spit on him the worst. The few giants (a fire giant among them) he has met weren't particularly keen on his theories either, but miraculously he managed to flee with mere singed beard.
