Here's Duanimon, an android scholar exocortex mechanic I was playing in this game of Dead Suns until the GM left a few months ago, shortly after we reached level 2. I'm going to need to modify their backstory somewhat because the campaign they were in previously had a rather odd beginning (we starting playing before the Starfinder rules were out here) but feel free to read my posts from the previous game to get an idea of my playstyle.
Yeah, that rule doesn’t make very much sense. I’m fine with ignoring it.
”Good idea,” Duanimon replies. As the distress signal continues to broadcast, they attempt to open a com channel with the fighter. ”Unidentified fighter, this is the shuttle Hippocampus, currently on a diplomatic mission for the Eoxian ambassador. Stop firing on us and state your identity and intentions or we will be forced to destroy you.”
Actually, this FAQ says that class features which grant skill bonuses or rerolls are an exception to that rule.
Also, in regards to starship combat, note that the FAQ revised most of the action DCs.
Duanimon sets their distress signal to continue broadcasting on repeat, then settles into the science officer’s chair. They boot up the Hippocampus’ active sensors and begin scanning the fighter attacking the shuttle.
Duanimon runs to a communications console and switches on the radio’s emergency frequency. ”Absalom Station security, this is the shuttle Hippocampus, currently in the employ of the Eoxian ambassador and located near the quarantined ship Acreon in the Armada. We are under attack by an unidentified fighter craft. Please send assistance immediately.”

Duanimon would be a good Science Officer or Engineer, but I think their personality leans more towards Science Officer, so they’ll do that unless anyone objects.
Duanimon returns to the Hippocampus with everyone else. ”I wonder what exactly it is that seems so valuable to everyone...” they muse on the way back. Once on the ship, they prepare for the coming expedition by running mental combat simulations against Entos.
I am similarly curious. I would have thought that a prospecting contract would give your employer claim to whatever you found.
Duanimon follows along behind the others, seemingly unaware of Kov'i's predicament as they observe the Dust Runner's bustle of industrial activity.
Duanimon walks back to the Hippocampus with the others.
"Unless any of my companions have something more to say we should probably be going. Hopefully examining the rock itself will yield some insight into the situation," Duanimon says, turning to leave unless someone else speaks up.
”I don’t need any either,” Duanimon says. ”So, can you give us your perspective on the dispute with the Hardscrabble Collective over the Acreon? We would like to hear you side of the story before investigating the ship itself.”
"I think we should just talk to them now. I doubt either party will attack us, so more combat gear seems unnecessary before we actually visit the Acreon. Either way, who should we meet with first? I'm curious to hear Astral Extractions' side of the story, but I have no strong preference."
"Kov'i is right. We should gather as much information as possible before embarking on our endeavor, and the robot's records will prove our neutrality in the matter."
"I concur with my companions. We shall embark upon your task."
When they enter the Eoxian ship, Duanimon looks around intently at the necromantic technology with unconcealed fascination. After the ambassador speaks, they chime in, "First, I am curious whether Astral Extractions and the Hardscrabble Collective have accepted your offer of mediation. In addition, I second my lanky companion's request for more information regarding the Acreon, particularly its current location and past history."
"Would someone care to explain to me precisely what transpired in our absence? I get the sense that it was fairly momentous," Duanimon asks the group. In reply to Zetara, they say, "I would not be averse to taking them, though I have no specific skill in the utilization of explosive devices beyond a basic profiency in their use."
Leveled up!
Duanimon backs up the files on a cloud service. "We should get to this Fusion Queen as fast as possible. I admit to a lack of experience in these sort of matters, but it sounds like Zetara could be in trouble." They pick up their pace to a jog, on the lookout for any public transportation which could get them to the Queen faster.
Garland/Duanimon: "I concur. Let's get moving," Duanimon replies. As they walk through the station, they copy Duravor's files into their implanted custom rig and begin to look through them.
Garland/Duanimon: "I currently have 209 credits, so the bribe shouldn't be a problem," Duanimon replies. When they arrive at the kiosk, they enter the coordinates of the Collective vessel which has Duravor's ship and transfers the necessary fare from their credstick.
Duanimon nods to Garland as they leave, ”The acknowledgement is appreciated. I am merely grateful I have more control over myself than you biologicals. To the astrotaxi, I suppose?” They set off for the nearest kiosk.
Garland/Duanimon: Duanimon is standing perfectly still, attempting to restrain Entos' anger as small pulses of light continue to course through their circuitry.
Garland/Duanimon: Duanimon steps forward as their circuitry glows slightly. ”I advise you to keep in mind that I am an independent sentient being, not someone else’s property,” they coldly inform the officer.
Duanimon nods to Garland and circles around the docking bay, trying to covertly listen in on the officer from the other direction.
Duanimon leans over and quietly informs Garland, "It looks like one of the customs officers is willing to take bribes to let ships through with minimal scrutiny, so we should be able to get in fairly easily. Anything else you want to do before we take an astrotaxi to Kreel's ship?"
Duanimon follows along with Garland, meticulously observing the procedures for receiving ships.
"Sure, I'll go with you," Duanimon responds to Garland. "However, I am somewhat curious how precisely you plan to avoid customs."
"Yes, that does sound pertinent to our current mission for the Starfinders," Duanimon says. "Unless anyone objects, we should meet up with Scera and Kov'i and then head to this Collective freighter." They then text Scera and Kov'i.
We have a new mission. Meet us at astrotaxi kiosk 47 on the eastern side of the station.
V'althorais is a member of the Collective? Actually, I guess that does make a lot of sense. As to the kasatha, he did say to the group that he was from Level 21. In any case, personally I have no objection to the current pace of the investigation. We've missed some things, but we're still making progress and have a number of leads. How does everyone else feel?
"Yes, what is the job exactly? While this Level 21 Crew does seem to have good intentions, I for one have little interest in taking orders from a gang," Duanimon says to Garland. Addressing the group, they continue, "We definitely should get in contact with the Hardscrabble Collective. They seem to be in some kind of proxy war with Astral Extractions, possibly over whatever happened to the Acreon. A business deal gone awry, perhaps? In addition, if Kreel was working with the Level 21 Crew, I am curious why they seemed to make no attempt to save him at the gunfight earlier."
Duanimon texts the rest of the group. We should meet up + confer with Garland before proceeding. Starburger's good. They then head back to Starburgers and await the others, watching for anyone who might be trying to observe them.
GM: Level 21 crew. [facepalm] Duh. :)
"That is unfortunate. Are you in favor of contesting these anacites' claim, or should we focus on other matters for the present?" Duanimon asks Zetara, Kov'i and Ehron. While the others consider, Duanimon searches the station infosphere for the symbol of two dice rolling a 1 and a 2, hoping to discern what it represents.
"I remain curious as to who you are working for and why you were watching us. Care to enlighten me before you go?" Duanimon says to the kasatha, their weapon at the ready but not aimed at him.
Not exactly what I had in mind, but I guess it will do, Duanimon thinks as Kov'i addresses the kasatha. They swiftly stride through the crowd, attempting to cut off the eavesdropper's possible escape routes while readying their rifle.
Duanimon tags along with Ehron, continuing to watch the kasatha.
"What do you think about surrounding our four-armed follower and seeing what exactly they want?" Duanimon quietly asks the others (except for Scera) over their comm.
"Yes, contacting the Hardscrabble Collective does seem the most prudent course of action," Duanimon replies. "If Ehron is sure the miners will talk to him, he should contact them remotely. If not, we can always use an astrotaxi to reach the Armada. They should be less likely to turn us away if we arrive in person."
While the others talk with the merchant, Duanimon unobtrusively sidles through the crowd, trying to get closer to a kasatha in miner's clothes so they can get a better look at the suspicious individual.
Duanimon follows behind the others, on the lookout for any more trouble.
Duanimon thanks Chiskisk before using their custom rig to search the Absalom Station infosphere for any information in the Hardsrabble Collective.
"I for one would be honored to aid the Society, and I urge you to do the same." Duanimon says to the rest of the group. "It is a truly noble organization which has made great contributions to society's knowledge."
"The loss of any agent of the Starfinder Society is a great blow to the quest for knowledge, and it seems Duravor was particularly competent," Duanimon says. "Might you be willing to provide us with some information as to the contents of the data disk he asked us to transfer to you?"
"I'm willing to investigate our capturers later, but for the moment we should focus on finding Chiskisk," Duanimon says before standing briskly. "To the Lorespire Complex!" they announce, walking out of the Starburger and through the station's winding passageways towards the Starfinder Society's headquarters.
Duanmon hands the package to Ehron before announcing to the group, "Chiskisk is apparently a host Shirren member of the Starfinder Society's Leadership Council who resides in the Lorespire Complex and worships Pharasma. They are presumably one of Duravor's superiors. We should proceed to this complex immediately and present the data disk to Chiskisk." "As for your question, Zetara, I must agree with Garland, especially given our lack of evidence of our experience." |
