Questionare:

he is a leader of a band of exiled outlaws. He sees the current events as huge potential, if a risky one. He sees the immediate rewards, payment and the like. But also sees the potential long term benefits that could come from being recognized as an ally to someone on the surface. He hopes his knowledge of the underdark and its paths and how the drow think will keep him from being killed or imprisoned on sight. Even though he was exiled, and many of his band are as well or worse actively sought by the "homecountry" he relishes a chance to land a blow back to the people that took everything from him. His career, his love, his prestige and connections...

Goals- bullet form
-Set up his band as legitimate mercenary traders instead of -just- black market brigands,
- Set himself up as an actual noble on the surface world, as unlikely as it seems. But you gotta shoot high if you wanna make it.
-Get revenge on a specific matron and several other houses that aided her
-Become a powerful and prominent figure in both the underdark and on the surface.
-Get him and his group strong enough to set up a proper presence in the underdark
-get "permission" from the elves to continue working above ground. Possibly attempt to set up a connection with them, just to try and prove them wrong in their prejudice.
-Keep those that work for him safe, and reward their loyalty. Especially those too few that fled with him from the underdark.
-Enjoy the pleasures and fruits of his labors and live in relative lavishness. With the odd thrill and excitement here and there.

secrets:
Several. He keeps his birth name (Drovic) from everyone he meets (even Aria), he hides his potential connection to a noble house of drow, instead speaking of himself as "a nobody that got lucky". And his growing... feelings, for Aria. after all, it would never work. And his yearning to just be accepted for once.
He also, maybe, might have had a small little hand in Aria just so happening to run into those goblinoids.

Secret unknown to character: He is a blood relative to Matron Wharreil. (with all of the potential spying that entails)

NPC connections/relations:

Aria Sunweaver- daughter of a semi prominent family of sunelves. She has a rebellious streak and was "leaving" home when she was beset by a large number of goblinoids. Dearthe just "happened" to be near by, and swooped in with his 2nd in charge Feanrir and saved the damsel. After heated exchange, an uneasy trust was formed. He allowed Aria to come and go at one of their surface posts as she pleased, as long as she agreed to have either Dearthe or another Feanrir escorting them. After all, if something befell her on their watch it would likely mean the doom of the entire group. Over the course of a few weeks, Aria and Dearthe seemed to, to their immeasurable surprise, grow somewhat fond of each other. Eventually, Dearthe was able to convince Aria to return home under his escort. Which, of course, led to his imprisonment for a time. But, after thorough questioning and investigation, he was released with a thanks, and a writ stating he could visit the town (up to you which) whenever he desired. As long as he made his presence known. Aria often comes to visit Dearthe, under pretense of keeping an eye on him, but, maybe, just maybe, a bond is starting to form between the two. Despite himself, Dearthe finds himself going against his better judgement at times when she is around involving business dealings and the like. (sort of like she is acting as a morale compass to the practical, efficient, mildly self-centered true neutral bastard Dearthe is.)

Matron Wharreil- The matron of the house that both cost Dearthe's family everything, and attempted to crush him as well. After leading a coup against his house, the Matron of Warreil took a large portion of the house into her own. Dearthe was a prominent arcanist, and showed a greater talent than many of his home in regard to the arcane. It was this ability that had earned him a position few men rarely inherit. However this was lost after Warriel absorbed his house. Indeed, his sex and position of a conquered house saw his talents ignored, wasted, even constrained. On top of this, his lover had been executed. This lead a younger, and more brash Dearthe to revolt. He stole several powerful magical items after gathering a following and struck at the house. They were crushed, or would have been, if not for a bit of luck and Matron Wharreil. Dearthe managed to best the apprentice arcanist of house Wharreil in a duel, the magical energy from which caused several walls and tunnels to crumble down. While Matron Wharreil could have easily sent pursuit team to chase them down and eliminate them, the threat the band posed was insignificant and she had other, bigger plans being set in motion to worry about. Besides, she believed Dearthe still had a part to play in their future.

Feanrir Dearthe- 2nd in command of the small band Dearthe leads. He is an apprentice of the late weapon master of House Dearthe. He is a simple elf at heart. Enjoying the thrill of combat, and while he has proven to be only passable competent at magic, Dearthe has made sure he has learned at least some of it. The lessons on loyalty and knowing ones place ingrained in him since birth hold strong, and his loyalty to his friend Dearthe is unwavering.

Zaranok Uugsmatta- A Svirfneblin leader of a small town in the underdark. Dearthe stumbled upon the town leader with his small band of drow half starved and wounded from the dangers of the underdark. When they met,Zaranok and a small party were under attack by aberrations and the battle was not going well for them. Deciding that, their best bet laid with aiding the svirfneblin Dearthe lead his band to their aid, swiftly turning the tide. Afterwards, Dearthe surrendered without a fight and, after nearly a month of imprisonment and questioning managed to convince the deep gnomes of his story and non-malign intentions. While it did little to assuage the Svirfneblin's distrust of the drow elf his story was good enough to see them at least released and given a modicum of food with at best vague directions to the surface. It didn't hurt that Zaranok testified that without Dearthe's intervention he and the others would likely not have made it back at all. Later, Dearthe returned to Zaranok with a proposition. Dearthe wanted to work on a way to strike at the drow houses, particularly Wharriel, and sought potential aid from the Svirfneblin town. At first, there was a very tentative trade agreement. Which was hard enough to do due to the rather isolationist ideology of the Svirfneblin. Dearthe also managed to get promise of more trading and aid if he would help in removing an outpost of Duergar that is threatening the Svirfneblin town. The two are, surprisingly, fairly good friends nowadays and are willing to trust each other. To an extent, the Svirfneblin still knows that Dearthe is, most of the time, likely looking out for himself and his own first.

Derrick Brandt- A human smuggler and black market deals-man. He leads a relatively large group that operate through several towns in the region. One of the few "prominent" connections Dearthe has managed to make on the surface, and who he sells most of his goods to/through at this time. However recently, thanks to Aria, he has started selling the more, acceptable, goods to proper markets. He still maintains poison, slaves, and other such "goods" on the black market through Derrick. He knows people like Derrick well enough, as long as you keep it profitable, and don't raise too much noise, you can trust him. Not much, but enough to not just up and sell you out.

Background overview:

Drovic was born in the top echelon of the noble drow house of *redacted*. As he aged, his natural talent and gift with the arcane, and his natural status of birth soon placed him as the apprentice of the grand Arcanist of the house. During this time, he formed a "friendship" with the apprentice to the weapon master. Both starting the relationship out of a thirst to climb higher up the hierarchy, with both promising to aid the other if they could. Eventually, they would come to trust each other more than any drow should trust another of their kind. Not terribly long after, the Grand Arcanist of the house was assassinated, leaving Drovic to fill his shoes. A task the young and ambitious drow had no qualms accepting. Not more than 5 years later however, his house was decimated and absorbed by house Warriel. This led to Drovic being stripped of his position, status, and wealth instantly. Indeed, he almost thought it would have been better to have died than suffer the humiliations he did. Yet, Drovic was not so weak as to break so easily. For years, he played his part, a subservient drow who's place in the world had been made entirely clear to him in the light... and plotted and schemed in the shadows. Eventually, this led to him finding many other individuals, many from other houses that had been absorbed, who were, unhappy to say the least, at the current affairs. After years of meticulous planning the group, to their annoyance, admitted their inability to do any worthwhile or grandiose move against the powers that be. Seeing an opportunity, not only to get out from under the thumb of their current conqueror, but to escape the oppressive rule of the matrons entirely, Drovic suggested instead to flee to the upper levels of the underdark, or even to the surface. Where they could, perhaps one day, see allies and form a base from which to strike back at their oppressors. Eventually, a plan was agreed upon. However, traitors spoke of the plan, and it was nearly foiled from the start. Indeed, nearly a quarter of the entire group either sold them out or were left behind to be captured before they even made it to the outskirts of the city. There, Drovic was confronted by the Grand Arcanist of House Warriel. Where the two dueled. Drovic was the weaker of the two, but thanks to over confidence on the House Warriel arcanist, and a bit of luck, drovic managed to land a solid blow against him. Now, injured and put on the defensive, the arcanist attempted to summon powerful primal magic. Drovic, sensing this, sought to disrupt or even gain control over the pooling magical energy which led to a duel of wills in which drovic proved the greater at that precise moment. A resound crack echoed through the underdark as the primal energy swirling around the area was released and rushed outward in a pure wave of force collapsing and destroying tunnels and caves all around. Thankfully, this cut off Drovic's group's pursuers and allowed them to escape.

Over two weeks later, the band, beaten, tired and hungry from surviving alone in the underdark. Encountered a band of Svirfneblin who were under assault by abberations and duergar and were close to being overwhelmed. Sensing an opportunity, Drovic lead his band to the Svirfneblin's aid quickly turning the tide. The Svirfneblin, once the duergar and their creatures were taken care of, turned on the drow band, wary and defensive. To both their surprise and the drow's, Drovic ordered the band to stand down. This led to them willingly returning "in custody" of the svirfneblin. Who kept the drow imprisoned for nearly a month. During which time they questioned each of them in turn. It was here Drovic met his.. friend, Zaranok, the leader of the small team that Drovic had saved. It was largely thanks to Zaranok's intervention and words along side Drovic's tale, that led to Drovic's eventual release. Along with all but one of his fellows. Indeed, Zaranok was a well regarded high councilman, who, against the more xenophobic norm, hoped to find allies in the exiled drow. As their town was under grave threat, but that is a story for another time.

Eventually, Drovic and his band reached the surface world, barely more than half its original size, and low on food and coin, they had to resort to their only course of action, banditry. They did not kill those they robed under strict orders from Drovic, save the rare situations where they were not given the choice. Eventually, thanks to a cap of disguise Drovic was able to create, he managed to make connections with the surface worlds less reputable sorts and began his foray into the black market. His wide selection of exotic under dark herbs, creatures, and slaves proved immeasurably lucrative. Soon, he had managed to build a base for his band, and even show his true face to some of his connections. Who only seemed more open to continuing business with a powerful drow. Yet, even this would not be enough to let him protect against possible hunters, much less form the basis of a base to strike back at those who had taken everything from him.

He would reach out further, setting the foundation for a legitimate trade enterprise on the surface, with his nigh one of a kind stock, thanks to his access to the underdark. He would even form plans to endear himself to the local lord of the land. Though, the largest opportunity came when he crossed paths with a daughter of a powerful sun elf. Not only saving his runaway daughter from an entire clan of bloodthirsty goblinoids, but convincing her to return home of her own volition and earning at least "permission" to remain on the surface, as well as a letter of introduction to the local human lord Randall Morn. Who allowed Drovic's band to continue their operation on negotiations of better trade deals as well as with promises to help deal with problems that arise via cheap mercenary contracts. However, the recent issues with drow have been both an opportunity and a curse for Drovic and his band. They are eyed with even greater suspicion than before, and despite years of keeping true to their word have lost a great deal, in respect, wealth and position. Perhaps, the only things keeping them from being wiped out entirely are the facts that they openly have worked against their own kin, Drovic's acceptance of having truth magic used on him, Aria's plea's to her father, and their offers of assistance against the drow. After all, who better to act as a guide to an area than those who know it best? Drovic's band lives on the knifes edge, especially in the eyes of the Lord Morn. One wrong move or occurrence could bring the hammer down upon them. So now, more than ever, they are forced to operate at barely sustainable levels. Hopefully, as this battle against the drow continues, Drovic can prove both his intentions and usefulness, as well as that of his band. Which now includes a multitude of humans and other races that decided it was a better option than banditry.
