I'm a little frustrated. I'm not sure at what point lines got crossed, but I feel like the group is operating under information that I don't have.

As I understand it the Prison is actually a castle.
There is a loooooong bridge on the other side of the main gate, which has a draw bridge and portcullis that are raised from the guard houses on either side of it. They are manned.

At the other side of the bridge is a bridgehouse, which may also be manned.

On the walls are at least two rovers. They aren't watching the outside. Nothing is out there but a long drop to sharp rocks and freezing water.

Somewhere in the main prison, or possibly in one of the guardhouses, is a card game where Sergeant Blackerly (the guy who branded us all) is gambling with a table full of off-duty guards.

Basically, there are still a whole crap-ton of people between us and freedom, and making a break for it isn't really an option.

Here's some additional information that I'm pretty sure is accurate, but hasn't come up in game yet. The landscape outside the prison is marshland. There's one road though it. Moving on the road means getting caught. Moving off the road means slogging slowly through mud and leaving easily followed tracks.

Basically, I think we are looking at this prison break wrong. I think we have a much better chance of success if we look at this as a stealthy dungeon crawl where our goal is to wipe out all opposition. Escape without getting rid of people who can follow us just means getting caught on the road later on.

And they thought Ulrich was crazy for wanting to kill everyone...bah!

Ulrich looks at the group and says, "What do you mean? I took this nightshade to create antidote! I'm a doctor, not a crazed assassin." He looks down at his belt pouch and mumbles, "Though the plant is already quite toxic by itself. Even if I had no idea what I was doing, just crushing the fruit would be enough..."

He blinks and jerks his head back and upright, looking around at everyone and says, "But that's why I need these to make antitoxin for it...oh right, that's why I didn't bring it up.." He shuffles through his pouch and walks past the others, looking about the kitchen. He's about to reach for something when he notices the remains of Myrtle's headless corpse in the adjacent room.

He just stares at it...

Ulrich looks about at the others and Rose, stating, "Yes. Guard dogs actually. We should probably rub dirt on our skin lest the smell of blood drives them wild." With that, he waits for the guards on the wall to pass, then steps back in the garden and gathers some top soil, rubbing his face, hands, and neck with it assuming manure wasn't the source of fertilizer.

Ulrich's eyes widen briefly as he tucks and turns back to the others. Rose was most likely leading so he interposes himself with her and whispers, "Back!" He shoves her back if she doesn't comply, the broad armed man tougher than he looked. He waits for the guards to pass before relaxing with a sigh and whispers, "Time to depart yes?"

Ulrich steps out from the garden, eyes noting the wooden structure just by the guardhouse. He peers at the walkways and towers, briefly noting what he can see before approaching the door, hand gripping the needle very tightly now. He puts his ear to the door and listens.

Ulrich's eye catches the Night Shade and the ogre's distasteful reaction to it. He plucks every good berry and flower he can use, stashing the harvested components in his pouch. Standing straight up, declaring, "I am done here." With that, he heads for the guardhouse, fingers twirling the syringe.

Ulrich looks back into her eyes once more, his gray hues narrowing. He lets the question linger for a moment before muttering, "What peculiar eyes you have.." He lips curl, a grin ever so slightly forming on his blood stained face. He turns away from her and says, "I also want a lab. Somewhere cold, quiet, out of the way...yes that'll do just fine."

With that, he slides the bombs hidden in his sleeves and puts them away in his belt pouch though a trembling hand might give away that he still keeps the mutative syringe close at hand. As he departs, he glances at Kyras and Travis discussing the impending alarm. He says nothing to them, giving Travis a wicked grin before stepping off towards the garden.

Ulrich looks deep into her eyes and whispers, "I've waited my whole life to kill these parasites, and I'm going to...or die trying." His arms tremble, a hand gripping a mutagen needle. "Fight me if you wish. There is nothing waiting for me outside of these walls, and damned if I waste what may be my final hours taking orders from Mitra or you or anyone else!"

He shrugs her off and attempts to storm past here and away from the others.

Ulrich wipes the gore from his eyes and wipes the rest off on his shoddy hemp prisoner clothes. He looks about and muses, "The bravado of these imbeciles is starting to wear my patience. Let us be off." He suckles on the corner of his blood washed lip, his face covered in smeared, caked blood. He brushes away the chunks of flesh in his hair, the pieces making wet, meaty sounds against the dense floor.

Ulrich had been too busy admiring his work to really care that the guards had come. He had already suspected their arrival and didn't feel the need to address them immediately. The doctor is rudely interrupted by a guard engaging him. He picks up the knife and says, "Go away I'm busy," and tries driving it in his eye.

Stab: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Next time make the surprise round less vague I didn't know if the surprise round was done or not :/

The doctor waits for her mouth to open wide before stuffing the explosive in her mouth, whispering, "You are absolutely right. Mindless cattle deprived of its nature can't hope to kill. To be able to kill is to survive. Your bloodline ends...with a bang.". He pushes her jaw up, hitting the bomb's trigger and steps back, averting his gaze for the inevitable execution.

The corner of Ulrich's lip curls, whispering, "Ah..that's it." He runs his hand down her arm and grips her clenched hands. The good doctor's eyes narrow ever so slightly. "Tell me, what went through your mind precisely when you thought about stabbing me? Did it feel good" He places the hand that has the bomb in it on top of her head, thumb flicking dangerously over the trigger.

He whispers just behind her head, "But you won't do it, your better senses get ahead of you. That small bit of awareness of what is happening is creeping in the back of your mind. You're wondering how we got here, who we are, how to survive. That is your mind right now, that is what you are experiencing right now, can you feel it?"

Ulrich gives her hand a firm grip and lets go, stepping back and explaining, "Your 'common sense' and 'better judgment' won't let you. But really, you know it's fear that keeps you quivering...frightened..and going to shut her mouth and let Sam work. Don't want to interrupt a busy man and his work.."

Ulrich's crooked smile returns as he says to everyone, "I have a particular fondness for cooking. Alchemy is just like cooking; both benefit from creative experimentation, both produce nostalgic aromas, and when you do a good job, you can eat your cooking." He draws a dirt ridden finger across one of the dirty dishes, collecting some of the edible matter. He then brings it to her nose and whispers, "It smells good doesn't it?" The doctor smears the food on the woman's smock and walks slowly behind her, asking, "What is your name chef of Branderscar?"

Ulrich keeps to himself as the magpies plunder what they can. Their voices made it so difficult to think; they pointed out the obvious like children. When they continue into the next room, he calmly and slowly approaches the startled woman, bringing a finger to his lips and whispering, "Shhhh...I'd hate to start a fire over nothing." He illustrates his point by holding out a bomb and adding, "By the way, how is the cooking you provide for the...gentlemen?"

Ulrich's vapid expression returns as the words of his companions seem distant and listless. Of course, his mind is processing every detail without even a thought, giving the doctor enough time to nod and react to Kyras' words. His head cranes and gray eyes stare at the open door, inspecting the details while the others discussed their astute observations.

He stands upright and walks past Travis and Rose, responding to Travis' question with a deep, cold, and sinister reply, "Towards the sounds of drunken men and the scent of revenge."

Ulrich's footsteps echo from the staircase as his comrades eradicated more guards, humming something to himself. His expression is sullen and bored, the dying cries of their victims a distant melody to an outdated song. He muses, "It doesn't have the same satisfaction that revenge delivers...how drab, how pathetic, how wasteful. Waste...it's all waste, these people are waste, waste, waste, WASTE!"

He clenches a black gloved fist and kicks a body repeatedly in the ribs, eye twitching and teeth gnashing. Picking the guard up by the collar of his tunic, he pulls him close and says, "You could have done so much more, and you squander your potential! All of you! Pathetic, insignificant waste! And you make your business to turn people into waste! You perpetuate the stagnancy and create a cesspool of indifference and incompetence!"

He slide a bomb and needle into each hand, growling, "Your lives...they mean nothing, they serve no purpose, they have no SOUL! Surrender your corpses to me; let me stack them tall and collect what life has given you and you have wasted."

Ulrich nods and says, "If the ogre didn't alert them, then they're nowhere near us." With that, he beckons for Grumblejack, waving his arm and steps down the stairs cautiously.

Ulrich's head perks up as he turns his gaze back to Grumblejack. He walks to the door and looks inside, saying, "Carry the corpses we leave in our wake, especially the ones you crush. Don't crush them if they are twitching." With that, he turns to Sholano and says with a devilish grin, "Well then, let's release the hounds and get out of here. A shame we couldn't stay longer and take our time with them. Then again, I'm looking forward to meeting your...colleague."

He walks past him and towards the room where the orcdwarf had dispatched the guard now that the others had most likely finished whatever business they had with his corpse. He kneels by his side and caresses his face, musing, "Still warm, but fading quickly the untimely chill that steals this man's warmth. Rot sweet prince; maggots are your only friends now."

Ulrich brings his attention to the ogre's holding cell. He leans against the wall and says, "Very good. Let's acquire the new addition to our merry and diabolical team."

"Oh that? A simple regenitive elixir...and just one of the many replacements for Mitra. It's intriguing that no one vouches for our comrade's suffering though." He grins at Travis and ponders, "And I thought we had become such great friends." This gets a disturbing chuckle out of the good doctor, quite happy to remind everyone that there was a reason why they were in Branderscar.

"In any case, I sense some concern for...subtly." He glances at Kyras, then back at the door. "The thought of Rose seducing the drunkard was mildly amusing; it'd be delightful to watch him die drunk on vice. Mitra would be so proud...but I'm torn between that and the orc twisting off his head. Any other suggestions?"

Ulrich shifts his dead, leery gaze upon Sholano, musing, "You have interesting and helpful colleagues." He doesn't wait for a reply, his attention already elsewhere. To the ogre, he says in a deep, monotone voice, "Kill them all." and readies a bomb, the explosive sliding into his palm. He turns towards the exit door and says, "So it's settled. We best be off now."

Ulrich shakes his head at the ogre and says, "Unfortunately, I have not solved a crucial issue regarding any potential healing elixirs. Even more so, my notes are in the hands of Branderscar's guard." His attention directs elsewhere, the faint scent of milk wafting in his senses. He stares at the bottle Rose is holding and tilts the end of it towards his nose and sniffs briefly.

Ulrich stares at the ogre, his cold eyes taking in his biological information like he could see his very DNA. He rolls the bomb tucked in his sleeve back and forth, the rest of his body stiff as a corpse. Every shift and motion is calculated and with purpose. He approaches Grumblejack's cell and says, "It's quite peculiar that an ogre is kept prisoner and not just slaughtered on the spot. Why are you here?"

The doctor seizes all of the alchemical components from the bag, his interest and attention now on preparing the admixtures and chemicals for proper use. Ulrich didn't have his lab to help him but these were much more basic components requiring the mere intelligence of a great wizard to understand...so he was done in a span of five minutes.

He holds one of his explosives and grins, pocketing it upon his belt. As for the mutagen, he kept that in separate pockets so as to not mix them up. As for his formulae sheet, he can only lament. Knowing the dullard, it was probably burnt by now.

Ulrich smirks as Sholano expresses his discomfort. After Rose finishes her explanation, he says, "Then it's settled; we'll take the front door out...and with as much supplies as we can reasonably carry." He gathers himself up and looks out the door, listening and watching briefly before ordering, "Take the front orc. It'd be rude of me to rob you of any bloodshed you'd wish to impart on our humble hosts."

Ulrich's heavy arms fall to his sides, blood rushing back into his cold digits. He slowly staggers back up, more blood rushing from his head after sitting down for such a long time. He cracks his neck and muses, "Still intact...a shame that she be too much of a burden. Oh well, perhaps next time." He walks over the fallen guard and relieves her of her chain shirt, donning the armor for himself.

He pulls out the longsword and extends it to the "orc" once he is free. As for the other items of interest, he sets them each aside for the others to collect, searching a last time for anything he may have missed. Once he is done, he stands and rubs his wrists, saying, "Mind indulging us on what your 'visitor' had in mind after this stage?" His heavy gaze rests on Sholano.

Oh I forgot the bonus for thieves tools so that's a 19. I think that's successful (hopefully) so I'll use my move action to stand if I'm freed.

Ulrich wakes with a start when the fight breaks out, just barely catching the glint of metal flying towards him. He catches the picks and takes a deep breath, tapping his numb fingers along the ring of the cuffs to find the groves and keyholes, gaining perspective of the device. He cared not who saw him try to get out, so he simply gets to work on the manacles.

Ulrich peers carefully at the veil as he had already taken stock of the bodies here and memorized every detail he could. He already had the mind to look into a humanoid's body and see how the internal organs were organized almost instantaneously. A piece of cloth was hardly different.

He ignores Travis and bluntly tells Sholano, "Peel the patches. You see them don't you?" Despite knowing what the likely outcome would be, he decided it best for the veil to reveal its secrets on its own.

Oh uh...since this might be a magic item and I have Spellcraft trained, I may get more than just Int to that roll. If that's the case, the total is 20 instead of 16.

The doctor abruptly suggests, "Put it on. He cranes his head back, his neck clicking like a crank. He muses, "If nothing happens, then it's highly unlikely to help, and we'll all be executed tomorrow. No pressure." He chuckles and sees if Sholano can even put the damned thing on in his position. As a final note of reassurance, he says, "But don't grieve my parting; at least I'll die knowing just how long a severed head remains alive. I'm hypothesizing somewhere between thirty seconds and a minute. Keep count for me so I can get a second opinion while our bones cook in the pits of Hell."

Ulrich is dead silent in his observation of Sholano's temporary leave, immediately suspicious of more to come. His eyes shift to the sergeant as his men escort the chipper young man, chuckling, "What's wrong? Someone actually cares what happens to a Forsaken person? My, my that temper of yours could lead to some...unsavory medical conditions. With all that stress, your heart might just stop working all together. His pause warrants a bemused grin at the thought of a man's bones leaping from the confines of his coffin. If they aren't going to rot in the ground, and if you aren't going to bring them back then why waste the money?

The good doctor taps his fingers against the wall and grunts, "We'll probably lose mobility in our fingers in a few minutes unless you all have a bull's heart stuck in your chests. It'll amaze you how quickly you'll miss snapping your fingers."

Ulrich's eyes move like a sun dial's light across the line, inspecting each body that the guards threw in this pit. Eventually he sits up and leans back against the wall to get a better perspective, expression dead save the occasional twist of the neck. Every time his head rested on someone, he mumbles quietly to himself, blinks once, then turns his head again. He repeats this strange ritual, the words around him absorbed into his lobes and sent through a process no one could possibly comprehend.

He rests his gaze a little longer on Quomaugh around the time of his biological faux pax. He licks the corner of his lips and whispers, "Yes, we could reset the jaw bone, but pigmenting the skin might prove difficult. Stature would require lab grown vertebrae to increase height. He looks up at the bleak chambers as if to gaze at a forlorn overcast, the dreary doctor sighing, "Do gods dream of greatness before they die? Hm.." he brings his head back down and grins, chuckling with odd amusement, muttering, "Nonsense. Dreams are for children and the lazy."

Background:

The work of a genius is always messy.

Self proclaimed Dr. Ulrich Drakas was quite the sight among his peers. His fascination with immortality and physical perfection received several laughs and several more scoffs as his empirical mind came at odds with the Mitran faith. This wouldn't prove to be much of a problem until the town crackpot came across the idea of using corpses as his source of study. After all, he didn't have enough money for proper schooling, and books, tools, and ingredients did enough to swallow his budget.

The first time was easy; in times of peace, men became complacent. In fact, it had gotten so easy to steal a body here and there that Dr. Drakas began to believe he "deserved" the corpses, his intolerance of ignorance as bitter as the work he engaged in. His methods were graphic, cutting open bodies and poking at deceased organs and bones. It started with skeletons, then rotted bodies. It wasn't enough for him; if he wanted a good specimen, it would have to be one who had recently passed.

Overconfident and zealous in his thirst for knowledge, Dr. Drakas dared to plunder the grave of a recently deceased woman who had come from good stock and was well-preserved. Priests had even bestowed magical preservation to retain her youthful appearance. She was perfect; human, female, brown hair, brown eyes, average in physique, and most of all, everything she was born with remained nicely preserved. He'd have sooner put her in a museum for the world to see than to rot uselessly in the dirt.

Unfortunately, he was caught when the alarm spell attached to her corpse signaled. When accosted by the Mitran clergy, he proved a struggle to keep down, the self-proclaimed doctor screaming all this nonsense about "knowledge" and "the key to immortality." They would not hear blasphemy from a madman, and as quickly as he had been interrogated, he was thrown into Branderscar to await his execution. Full of spite and hatred towards a people who could not embrace revolutionary ideas and grand discoveries, he curses the world under his breath, his piercing gaze always in the direction of Talingarde as though he had hoped the intensity of his eyes could burn down buildings.

Guess who can be evil and imbibe reliable healing? This guy can!
