Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan remains next to Clancy.
He draws his crossbow and fires at one of Azazel's followers - anyone to whom he has a clear shot.

With the cowardly thief under the blessing of multiple deities, Beni from The Mummy comes to mind.

Crossbow, Blessing of Justicia, Blessing of Carnifex: 1d20 + 2 + 4 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 2 + 4 + 3 = 18
Damage: 1d6 + 4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 3 = 8

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

"It seems like this Azazel meant to give their life to imprison you, but then reconsidered. Because they still live.
I'm not really built for cutting a bloody swath through anybody. And I'm, uh, not looking for the release of exalted death either."

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

"Should I remove the wax seals now? We'd want a torch, but not too close. We just want to heat them enough to peel them away."

Is that one Disable Trap check or five? Can Degan estimate how difficult it might be (so I can decide how much Luck to burn)? If not, I'll go with one Luck per check (if five checks) or three Luck (if one check).

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Let's see how much Luck he has to burn... he used 2 getting in to the dungeon, but we rested and he gets back level/day, meaning he is at full.

Degan takes a deep breath and ventures forward to examine the seals.
I wasn't sure if you burned Luck before or after seeing the roll, but then I saw this post from the GM that made clear it was the latter and that I can roll as I go to see how much I need to burn.

Find Traps, 2 assists: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 5 + 2 = 17
Find Traps, 2 assists: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 5 + 2 = 17
Find Traps, 2 assists: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 5 + 2 = 27
Find Traps, 2 assists: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 5 + 2 = 10 plus Luck!: 1d5 ⇒ 5

"Okay, I think I have it."

Luck 11/12.

"Thus, for the greater good of all, I would ask you to venture down into the depths of this place. There you will find a statue with three rubies. These are the Jewels of the Carnifex. Destroy these jewels, and I will be able to complete the rites to finally eradicate the Carnifex, once and for all. Do this, I will reward you with all of the treasures I have found in this place."[/b]

"It's a statue with three rubies. Here we are. The Jewels of the Carnifex that we have to destroy.

I... hmmm... I have a feeling that destroying the rubies will cause this statue to come alive.
So, uh, you don't need me for this part, right?
We aren't talking about delicately extracting them, but simply smashing them?"

Degan and his 7 HP will slink back against the wall.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

"Can you tell us what you know of what dangers we might face?"

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan looks at the strange idol. Although some may call him a Thief, he isn't tempted to even touch the gold decanter filled with alien slime.

"What is that thing? This 'god of Light' that Azazel claims to serve?"

He is deeply suspicious of the statue and takes a pallet as far from it as possible.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

"I'm not the smart one either. But the story seems at least plausible to me. That these ones of 'the Light' could destroy a 'goddess' isn't so far-fetched; lots of cults have a deity that turns out to be not so deific.

But if you need someone less holy to steal some gems, I'm your man."

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan comes to Istevan's aid, moving out from hiding and striking at the foe that toppled the fighter.

Dagger: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan remains in the shadows near Mirinde, waiting to Backstab if any enemies get past the fighters and come for the elf.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan will draw his dagger and try to hide in the shadows near Mirende, so that if anybody comes for her he can jump out and stab them.

And if nobody does come for her, he will be all the happier.

Hide in Shadows: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan hangs back, crossbow in hand. Trying to position himself for a Backstab sounds incredibly dangerous, as even if he took out one the other six would get him.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

"What is that starburst sign on the drum skin? Was it a tattoo that the person had before they were killed - perhaps signifying an enemy of this cult - or was it applied to the drum as a symbol of this cult?
I only ask in case we should come across this symbol again."

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Whoops! Sorry I missed this.

Degan tries his best to hit a cultist and not an ally.
Crossbow: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

If I fire into a melee, is there a 50% chance of striking my ally?

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan darts back into view and fires at a cultist.

Crossbow: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

See, now that's what would have happened to me if I hit the drum - lucky that I missed!

Degan scurries back the corridor to get out of sight of the cultists.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan moves up and shoots at the drum with his crossbow!

Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Bah... not burning all my luck on that.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

"Wait, you want me to take a shot at the drum?
Okay... let me know when. If I have a line of fire to them, they have a line of fire to me, so let's get that distraction in place first."

Degan gets out his crossbow.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Having reported back, Degan prepares to hide behind the warriors.
"They have a good defensive position. Shooting the drum seems a good way to get their attention, and maybe lure them out of that position to come after you.
I mean, come after us. Not just come after you. But making them leave a defensive position would be good, wouldn't it?"

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan will scout ahead to the north, listening for any sound other than the drums. Such as voices of the drummers.

Sneak Silently: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21

He will go about 60' ahead of the party, then report back.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Deciding against calling out tor the party (and thereby announcing that he is alone), Degan climbs back down the vines and reports on what he sees.

"I think we should proceed up the vines, and then go explore both of the chambers that I could see. Can you all make it up the vines?
I couldn't tell where the sound of the drums was coming from."

He will check the two rooms for traps, but only once the party is with him - he does not want to be distracted and immersed in his investigations without somebody watching his back.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

"Let's see if whatever panicked the bat momentarily will also affect me."

Degan walks through the doorway.

Will if needed: 1d20 ⇒ 15

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Strength: 1d20 ⇒ 17
Miraculously, the stunningly mediocre thief is able to free the bat (hopefully not killing it in the process).

"Let's not use that door."

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan will check the three portals for traps to see if there is a anything he can help with.

Find traps #1: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Find traps #2: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Find traps #3: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan will of course search for the way to open the door.
Is Find Trap the right skill?: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

As he looks, he comments, "There are six bodies here, and there were six shades. Might they be the spirits from these bodies? Maybe they were faithful of Carnifex, maybe they were looters who picked up that unholy symbol and were cursed by it, maybe they were among that rumored army of Punjar's nobility that disappeared down here.
But whatever their story, would blessing their remains put their spirits to rest?"

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

"Clancy, what is it you see that troubles you? I know there are the rumors that this place belonged to the Cult of Carnifex, but that greeting? Well, it seems pretty typical for catacombs.
There is nothing evil about acknowledging that the owners of these skulls were once alive like we were, and we will someday be dead like they are. That's just how it goes, right?
Is there something I am missing?
I'm hoping - and I could be wrong - that some of the rumors about this place were unfounded.
Let me know if you see signs of evil magic or curses."

The greeting seems like a pretty standard 'memento mori' statement, and the stacks of skulls are much like the Paris Catacombs for example.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan tries again to push the door open.
Strength: 1d20 ⇒ 13

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

"Spider!"

Is there anything on the platform that Degan can hide under?

If so, he dives for cover.
If not, he jumps through the portal.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan likewise has a rope and grappling hook.

The thief takes a running leap...
Do I decide to use Luck, and how much, before rolling the Strength check? If so I will use 2 Luck.

Strength, Luck: 1d20 + 2d5 ⇒ (9) + (2, 1) = 12

He makes it! Barely. Pummeled in mid-air by the freezing and filthy water, Degan grasps the edge of the platform and and pulls himself onto it.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

"That's a good idea, Clancy. I might be able to make it first. Then anchor a rope on that side to help pull you all through the torrent."
Degan can burn Luck to get across.

He looks at the skull he would be swinging towards and shivers.

"Unless any of you have magic, or a better idea, or happened to see some long and sturdy boards on the way down here..."

DM Brainiac wrote:
"I always heard they were a cult of death worshippers. Nothing good can come of digging in them ruins. No fortune in gems is worth disturbing what's dead and buried."

This is the rumor that Degan hears, and reports to the party. It sticks in his head due to, of course, his remarkable cowardice.

"Yeah, I'm not sure it's worthwhile. Not for money, anyway. If for some noble cause Clancy feels that he needs to go... well, you might be a little better off for having me around, and I do owe you for saving my life."
Then again it was this bunch that endangered it in the first place... Still, I don't know what else I would be doing if I left them.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan is pretty terrible defensively. His AC is 11 and he has 7 HP.
I'm not going to try to get him killed, but I'm also not going to be surprised or even disappointed if it happens. It's DCC.

He will try to avoid combat as much as possible, and it's kind of fun playing him so cowardly because of his fragility, but taking the ring would at least give him a slightly better chance of surviving if he happens to get targeted. He certainly would want it in character.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

I haven't played any DCC before so it is all new to me.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

1d4 ⇒ 4 !!

Degan gains a monstrous 3 HP (after Stamina penalty), bringing his new maximum total to 7 HP.

His Luck increases to 12 as per Gameplay.
His attack bonus increases to +2, crit die is d14/II, Luck die is d5, and +1 to Ref and Will.
Bunch of skill increases.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan comes out from hiding, along with the two women he rescued.

He does not quite seem to grasp Isteván's meaning.
"I am all for letting the elf explore the Emerald Enchanter's magical mysteries. I don't have any knowledge of such things."

After a moment he seems to get it. "Oh! Do you think such a wizard would care about things like gold and gems?
I wonder...
What was his goal, anyway? Did he ask for ransom for the villagers he kidnapped?"

Degan is feeling curious and cautious more than greedy. He'll work on locks and traps where he is requested to.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

"Quickly - with me!"
Degan tries to escort the rescued women to a safe place where they (and he) can cower in fear until the danger passes.

Hide in Shadows: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

If Mirinde has stopped the second cage from moving, then Degan will try to swing over to that one and open the lock as quickly as he can.

Strength or Agility to Jump/Swing/Climb: 1d20 ⇒ 12
Luck (2 points, now down to 2/11): 2d4 ⇒ (4, 3) = 7

Open Lock: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Pick Lock: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Degan cannot avoid contributing to the comedy of errors.

However, he really wishes that he could succeed here.

Spending a bunch of Luck. 7 dice maybe? He was at 11/11.

Luck: 7d4 ⇒ (1, 3, 1, 3, 1, 2, 4) = 15
For a 22.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Count me in as well.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan tries again to pick the lock, but he nearly drops his tools!

Pick Lock: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Think that is too far away to make it even with burning Luck at 1d4 per point. Will have to hope for a better roll next round!

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan scrambles to get more secure position, pulling himself up and getting a foot between the bars so he can stand instead of hanging on.

He then starts to work on opening the lock of the cage.

Pick Lock: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

How far is it horizontally from the wall to the cages? I get that the bottom of the cages is 10' up, but I wondering about trying to Parkour off the wall and up high enough to grab the bottom of a cage. If I can't do that, I will just jump for the cage.

Degan hears the women screaming for help, and although he is mortal terror of the many enemies, he makes a heroic leap to save the prettiest nearest maiden!

Strength or Agility to jump up: 1d20 ⇒ 16
Luck if Needed: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Will use another Luck if needed.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

I'd give you Luck if I could, Clancy. Thieves are unfortunately more selfish than Halflings.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

After helping identify the more valuable gemstone fragments, Degan goes to inspect the door.

Find Traps: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

He confidently remarks "All clear here, Isteván."

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan is terrified, after his own near-death experience and after seeing creatures eviscerate his far tougher allies.

He hangs back and waits to see what the spellcasters can do.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan is interested in the gold, but not that interested. He is somewhat concerned that it will come alive and bind him like it did the moon-devil.

"I believe Isteván suggested having a rest. I don't know much about magic - do you need to rest, Mirinde? Or you, Clancy?
Otherwise we can keep going."

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

"Might the plants go dormant if their 'sun' is moved away? Maybe to a corner or even out the door?"

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan moves up to the remains of the eidolon and retrieves his dagger.

He does his best to stay far away from the dangerous-looking plants.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

I guess he would have spent Luck to avoid missing, so will keep the attack.
