Cheers to you Dr. Jujo! Congrats on that monumental endeavor!!!

Sidenote, I will not be using Dr. Jujo as an in character name.. lol


Just a quick check in. I did hear from Alice(Emerald Duke) and things are getting back to normal and he is looking forward to the game. Let's just hold off on continuing for a bit longer. I would prefer to have everyone onboard.

This is a great question. I don't have any good answers to this. Hypothetically you could go in guns a blazing and hope for the best... but then again you are missing that up front melee character.

I am hopeful that I hear from him soon. I know life is kind of upside-down for everyone right now so I am not overly worried about it right now. Just want to keep communication open, I don't want you all too feel I am ghosting you all.

That being said... How are all of you doing in the midst of this cover-19 pandemic?

My family has started taking walks after lunch and dinner. Helps to burn some energy out of the kids, and it is nice to explore nature as spring is coming upon us. We also decided to do a garden. We have been wanting to do this for a few years now, and since we can't really leave the house we had the extra time to build the garden bed. We planted onions, lettuce, peas, strawberries, and cucumbers. I am looking forward to turning those cucumbers into pickles.


Hey all. I have tried to reach out to Alice, but with no response. I do hope all is well for him considering he said something came up last week and then was gone.

I am curious about all of your thoughts. It would be hard to continue on with the plan at hand. If we were to continue I would not feel comfortable boting Alice with the possibility of a big RP scene coming up.

Let me know what you all think.


18 Sarenith, 4713. Morning

As Revekka pulls free the arrow from the man’s chest blood begins to pool out even faster than before. Revekka places her hand upon the wound, as her hand glows it transfers to the man’s body and the blood stops flowing from him. The pool of blood begins to soak into the straw covered ground and the man’s clothing. The blood covers the hand that Revekka had used to stabilized the man.

With the help hands of others, Trawets is able to tie up the limp bodied bloody man.

With an easy Wisdom check, everyone would realize that Ottast is right. The man would come and check the front door roughly every half hour and return almost instantly. His presence being gone even this amount of time could raise speculation within.

What does the party do next?

I was wanting to wait for Alice and Trawets before really moving forward, but I know there is life events happening with Alice. I will checkin with him personally and see what is up. Please feel free to keep RPing in this scene, I won't be using this time against the party for "in-game" timeline.

As the man speaks; "What the...." he is cut off with a thunk as an arrow hits him square in the chest. Before his hand can reach up to grab ahold of the arrow the man falls onto the ground. His blood is pouring from the chest wound staining the snow crimson.

Trawets moves quickly, but gracefully, not to spook the horses as he rushes to find some rope. He is able to find a span of rope that is roughly 20 feet. Everyone gets into position as the man continues to come to the shed.

As he begins to step into the doorway the illusion of the woman fades and Jujo's readied action goes off. His eyes go wide eyes in shock at the sight of the full stable; "What the....."

Again about a half an hour passes by and again the person comes to the door. He takes a few steps out and holds up his lantern and looks around. This time he spies a figure that speaks to him. From within the stable you can see him try to focus his eyes. As the figure of the woman walks into the stables the man shuts the door and begins making his way to the stables. He is holding out the hooded lantern to guide his way.

He is about five feet from the door and will be walking through the western stable doors in a matter of moments. What will you do?

When you want to do anything, always error on the side that you might need a roll and go ahead and do it. I would rather have you do it and not need it than to need it and not do it.


18 Sarenith, 4713. Morning

Though the south western door of the Sentinel Lodge is only a short 30 feet away, the wind and snow make it seem further. A wooden roof extends over the wide porch of this entrance. Double doors profile access to the lodge itself. Two small glass windows are set in the walls to either side of the doors.

During the conversations you have this morning you see someone come through those doors roughly once every half hour or so. They walk out, hold up what looks to be a hooded lantern, look around, and go back in.

The window to the left of those double doors always has a light flickering within, the window to the right is typically dark. The southern part of the lodge is two stories, the first level is typically dark at all times while the second level has light flickering from within and you can see movement throughout the day.

Alice:

You are unsure about the alliance between Rohkar and the fey, but you do know they are the ones responsible for the attack on the caravan. Since joining you have been kept outside as patrol most of the time. But, you do know that there is a cook, "Ten-Penny," that joined up not to long before you did.

You have been inside and you know there are typically less than a dozen within the lodge, that includes the cook and Rohkar himself. You have not seen any fey within the lodge that stays, but you do know there has been some meetings between Rohkar, a troll, and a mephit.

There is talk of an illness within the lodge between you and the two other guards you were stationed with. If it is true is yet to be seen.

This is about all you would know, being the newest recruit you have the worst watch duty. You have been told that if you come across more recruits that they would take your place in the cold and you could come inside the lodge.

Those who might look around the stables do not find much of use outside of riding gear for the horses that were stabled within.

@Jujp yes, I am sorry about overlooking that. You would have regained that Dex damage while sleeping.


18 Sarenith, 4713. Morning

A night of conversations and planning goes by uninterrupted. No matter how you keep watch, everyone is able to get a full night of sleep. Everyone gains 2 HP per HD. Those who want to aid can only aid one person overnight. Give me a Heal Check DC 15. The person who is receiving aid will receive 4 HP per HD.

Dawn comes and everyone who set out the night before are now realizing that they haven't had much to eat since the breakfast they had as the Silver Stout. Those who eat please mark off a trail ration. Those who do not eat will not receive a penalty, but it is on your characters mind as you will go about your day.

Here is a map of the Sentinel Lodge to use for your planning. There are two entry points, one to the East and one to the West.

Hey all! How is life doing? Me? Oh not to bad. Came home Thursday night and started to put away groceries. Went to take some stuff downstairs to our freezer when I noticed our basement was completely flooded, then the nightmare hit.... I saw the toilet paper and crap floating. The sewer backed up into our basement.... Finally got the proper team out to clean/sanitize/clean/sanitize it this morning and now it is drying out....

Alice leads the team around the trap and makes a wide birth of the Lodge heading towards the stables.

The twin doors open into this low stable, where five stalls hold three horses and a mix of loose straw. A rack of riding gear hangs on the east wall, and a cast- iron tub sits empty in the corner. You are able to use one of the last stalls for the horse, and the final stall everyone piles into. It is cramped, but there is room for people to sleep while others keep watch…

What does the party do? I don't want to sim the night, it seems like there could be some important discussions and planning that could happen...

17 Sarenith, 4713. Late

As Alice puts Malick in check, he shoots him a sideways sneer over his shoulder before returning his gaze to the party and Revekka. Malick and the other archer stay silent and allow Alice to take the lead in the conversation until Ottast turns with an axe, Malick speaks up; “Listen here, best be puttin that axe down if you know what is best for you and your friends. You wouldn’t want them to be hurt because of your stupid decisions…” Malick points his bow at Ottast.

When the unseen companion appears the two archers seem to get spooked. Even when Alice calls out Revekka, the two still don’t seem to settle down. They look nervous towards what they cannot see. With the slight mention of “Rohkar wouldn’t be pleased” the two of them begin speaking over each other; “yeah, they ain’t worth it… we need to watch the post… you’ve got this Alice…” and the two of them lower their bows and have a hustle in their step as they leave the party.

After a few moments the two guards are no longer in sight and the wind has mostly covered the sounds of them quickly leaving the scene.

17 Sarenith, 4713. Late

Ottast begins to lead Revekka, Trawets, and Jujo on a horse past the trip line towards the stables. Before the group is able to pass the trip line Jujo and Ottast feel something fly past them from behind. Looking in the snow you see the shaft and fletching of an arrow sticking out of the snow. The Jujo turns in his saddle, and Ottast looks behind the group and you see three men standing on the trail. Two with bows, and a third holding a scythe. All there look like travelers that have been on the road for sometime.

Ottast:

You recognize the three of these men as those who were camped out playing cards.

One of the two archers speaks up; "Now, now, now... what would the four of you be doing sneaking around in the woods? Can't you see that we are having abnormal weather? Who are you and where are you trying to sneak off too?" The two archers both pull arrows from their quiver and start to take aim, but not fire; "Also, don't be reaching for your weapons. I wouldn't want to need to shoot such a pretty lady..." an evil smile curls his lips around those last two words.

Hey all. sorry about last week. Everything around us is closing due to the coronavirus and my family was scrambling to figure out what we were going to be doing with our kids. I will be getting a post going today.

I hope all of you are doing well through this whole coronavirus whatnot.


17 Sarenith, 4713. Evening

Ottast begins to lead the group from the trail around the lodge towards the stables, but even before you are able to pass the well Ottast spots something. Halting the group Ottast crouches down and sees a trip line. Following the line with his eyes he sees the line leads to a crossbow on the porch. It also looks like the crossbow is tied to a string of pots and pans.

Something is not as it seems.

Ottast:

You would know that the High Sentinels live in this lodge. They typically keep the bandit activity in the Border Woods but for some reason the bandits have been able to attack Lady Argentea's caravan and even take her captive.

From what I remember, Revekka was the only one who had a horse and she gave it to Jujo to ride to help aid him in the snow. None of the horses at the wreckage site survived. I personally just hand wave weight within reason because I personally believe it bogs things down. But like I said, within reason. I don't think Jujo will be carrying 5k worth of copper from a dragons horde.

The party begins to move forward taking a wide birth around where Ottast saw the three men camped. The terrain here is not the most forgiving but it seems as if the horse is handling itself rather nicely, Revekka does an okay job, but Trawets is struggling and seems to be making the most noise of the group in the snow.

Unaware if anyone or anything heard you as you moved forward, the party continues on and you find the trail again. You quickly find yourself climbing the hills within the Border Woods.

After climbing at least a hundred feet into the hills, the snowy trail finally levels off. In a clearing among the trees, a large wooden lodge overlooks a ravine spanned by a long rope bridge. Smoke rises from the lodge's two snow covered chimneys, and a large woodpile is stacked against the outer wall. A small outbuilding stands east of the lodge, and a stone well nearly blanketed by snow is barely recognizable to the north. Several tracks lead southwest towards a detached stable.

Sorry all, March is a crazy month for me and work. I have conference every weekend and I mentally tell myself I will have time to post but realistically I do not. Until further notice it might be best to say that I will not be posting on weekends, but always feel free to RP moments.

I do have the works for someone joining us and actually had plans for where to add him, but I think the party does need the add before continuing on. I am not sure the best way to add them at this point without having another PC come wondering through the forest looking for you all... I will see if they would like to switch to more of a frontline/tank build vs what they were planning.


What shall it be?


Is Jujo going alone when approaching or is the rest of the party also going? I know Ottast is moving around to scout.


I am waiting on confirmation of what you four would like to do.


Randgríðr I hate to see you go, but I completely understand. Good luck with work/life and the games you are running on the boards.


I have a message our to Randgríðr. I see that they are posting in other areas. Hopefully they will see the message and respond. I will try again once more. Feel free to continue on. We still have Ottast, Trawets, Jujo, and Revekka.


Otta sighs; "And they're roasting rabbits." Now you are mentioning the important things.

Ottast:

As you think over your venture alone you do not remember seeing any one in trees. The bases of the trees around where you were had no blemishes in the snow.


17 Sarenith, 4713. Evening

Ottast leaves the group behind and moves forward to see what is producing the light.

Ottast:

You move forward with the grace and stealth of a predator hunting in his own woods. You know well enough to stay off the main trail. Anyone who might be keeping an eye out would know to watch the road keenly.

Moving through the trees you are able to make to a downed tree that adds extra coverage between you and the light source. You discover that it is a camp fire. Over the fire are two skewers with roasting rabbits. The smell does hit you and you remember that you haven’t had a proper hot meal in sometime. Besides the fire is a makeshift shelter using what you would assume is blankets or cloaks. They are positioned in a way to prevent the wind from cutting through the three men that are sitting beside the warm fire.

You are unsure of what they are saying, but you can tell that they are arguing about something. After a moment of watching you see one gesture proudly as he reveals some playing cards and scooping up something from the ground below. These men are gambling.

As you observe them further, you realize that they have bows and bucklers besides them along with what appear to be short swords. This is not uncommon for men traveling through the Boarder Woods, especially with the weather as it is. But, you do know that these men do not wear the garb of the High Sentinels.

You watch Ottast leave you behind. You notice that he does not stay on the trail proper, and he is doing an exceptional job at leaving little to no trail for you to follow. This hunter is clearly good at craft.

Sorry for the delay, this Friday-Sunday was a hectic one. Back to the snow!

17 Sarenith, 4713. Evening

The party decides to push on leaving behind the warmth that Dansby's funeral pyre offered. Bundling up your cloaks tightly, you all set off.

As odd as traveling through the day with low visibility because of the snow was, traveling at night with that same visibility is even more awkward. Your torches and other light sources reflecting off of the snow as it is falling down on you with the darkness of night behind it causes your travel to slow a bit.

After a bit of travel, you look back to where the funeral pyre is and you can no longer see it. The flames and smoke is blocked out by the snowfall and darkness, but you press on.

Another hour of travel you come to a point in the trail where it beings to climb to a ridge line to the south beneath sow covered trees. It is here where you see prints of boots and horses that have disrupted the freshly fallen snow on the trail...

If you climb the ridge line:

You move forward to see beyond the crest and you can faintly see what looks like firelight up ahead.

It is currently evening, the sun is setting and the flame lit sky adds a beautiful contrast to the snow covered ground and dead ice frozen trees. The party is able to build a funeral pyre to send Dansby off, and to warm the party.

Ottast knows that if the party were to press on that they would be able to make it before midnight, taking into account slowing down because even less viability. The one up side that Ottast would also know is that the predators that would typically come out at night to hunt have either ran off for warmer homes or would not come out at all at night to hunt.

Over the span of time it takes to set up the pyre, light it, say the appropriate liturgy and give respects, the party can feel a drop in the temperature without the sun warming the sky.

I am cool continuing on at night, just need the "okay to go" from the party.


17 Sarenith, 4713. Evening

Jujo follows Revekka's lead as they back away from where they are trying not to spook the stag. Once they are almost out of sight of the stag(due to snow) they hear the stag take off deeper into the woods.

Arriving back to where Ottast, Trawets, and Randgríðr are standing, Jujo and Revekka see their other companions standing around the body of Dansby talking. Jujo breaks off from them and begins to set up a funeral pyre, but those that are listening can hear him trying to remember the ceremonial liturgy for a Sarenite funeral.

17 Sarenith, 4713. Evening

Jujo and Revekka looking for wood.
The two of you set off looking for downed trees on this side of the icy crossing. It takes a little bit due to the snow, but you are able to find larger pieces of wood that would burn for an hour at a time. The difficult part is trying to find the kindling that would start a fire. You try digging through the snow to find dead underbrush, but it is all over saturated and know that it would not catch fire.

After sometime searching for wood:

As you two are talking and picking up wood for the fire you suddenly hear a snap of wood just west of you, in the opposite direction of where the party is making camp. The two of you freeze, maybe even duck behind a tree or bush. Waiting for a few moments to see what comes into view, your nerves begin to get to you. Is it an undead, another giant spider, more ice elementals… suddenly the creature slowly walks into view. The two of you see a White Stag. Both of you breathe easier after seeing the stag. With that breath the stags head pops up and looks in your direction…

Ottast, Trawets, & Randgríðr
The three of you are standing around the dead body watching as Jujo and Revekka begin to make their way into the woods looking for what is needed to make a funeral pyre. You know that Old Man Dansby did not leave behind a family. Ottast’s ties to Dansby was that his outlaying farm was a welcomed stopping point when coming back to town from his cabin or from the hunt in the Border Woods. Randgríðr’s ties are due to the fact that Dansby was a former soldier of Taldor. He would give insights and tips to the town’s militia from time to time. Trawets can sense the sorrow from the two of his companions.

Though Trawets was only in Heldren for a short period of time, he did pick up that the village temple was a Temple of Erastil. Within that temple were also shrines to Abadar, Gozreh, Pharasma, and even Sarenrae.


17 Sarenith, 4713. Early Evening

The Ice Elemental's blank stare slowly melts away as Randgríðr's halberd and Ottast's arrow cleanly land into the creature. With it not being able to put up a fight the attacks are clean and lethal, you are all also certain that death found it quickly. With the two Ice Elemental's melted away into the ice and snow around the party, the group stands silently beside the dead frozen body of Old Man Dansby. Besides the crunching of snow under your boots, the loudness of the howling wind is amplified.

It is at this moment that the party realize that they have been on the trail of these bandits for almost a full day, and besides the wreckage they have left behind, they have not seen any physical presence of them. Everyone does remember that they have a goal of the High Sentinel lodge, and Ottast and Randgríðr assures the rest of the party that it is right around the corner. But with the sun going down and the temperature dropping, it might no be realistic that the party could make it before the full coverage of night.

What does the party want to do?

I hadn't realized Dansby had left loot. Sure go ahead. We should remember we have those pots, tho. Thanks DM for having that loot sheet.

Ottast was looking over Dansby during these rounds while everyone else was messing with the Elemental.


Question about resting. How would you all like to handle this when you are not in a inn or tavern? My in person play group used to use three shifts of 4 hours so that everyone would get 8 hours. We would typically have casters take the first or last shift so that they can get a straight 8 for regaining spells and abilities.

Let me know what you would like to do so that I can put it in my notes. Also let me know what watch shift you would like.


The tied up Ice Elemental is look up from the ground at the party. It sees Jujo using hand motions and body language to covey a message, but it is hard to tell if it comprehends. It sees Randgríðr standing over it with her halberd a the ready. When Revekka speaks, it looks towards her. Still with an unreadable expression.

With an easy wisdom/sense motive check of 1, the party gets the impression that the Ice Elemental waking up tied up and surrounded by armed people (that it originally tried to attack) might not be in the most diplomatic mood.

Ottast goes to examine Old Man Dansby:

Looking over the body you see that there are slight signs of a stuggle, but something beyond sword, spear, and bow is how Dansby met his fate. You see still in their sheaths are Dansby's dagger and his finely crafted handaxe. Masterwork Handaxe You also see his coin pouch still attached to his belt, this makes you believe that it was not bandits that fell him. When you look, you will find 14 gold, 25 silver, and 18 copper within the pouch.

Still slung on his back is his quiver of arrows and you instantly remember his beautiful bow. Your eyes quickly dart around the ground, you see protruding from the snow pile where the Ice Elementals emerged is Dansby's bow. You pull it free from the snow, and you see the darkwood bow is intact. You have used this bow previously and are familiar with its quality and craftsmanship. Your hand moves up the integrate scroll work that moves towards both ends of the bow and meet in the middle with its leather grip.

The bow is a Masterwork Darkwood Composite Longbow (+1 Str)

In a few rounds Jujo ties up the Ice Creature with a bit of his rope as he and Revekka discuss bits of into they know about what all know as an Ice Elemental. Ottast clearly unsatisfied with the decision of two of the party members, he fires an arrow at the tied up elemental that is on the ground. Unfortunately the prone state of the creature and the wind blown snow makes it difficult to land the shot and it sinks into the snow a little bit off.

As the discussion is taking place those who are looking at the elemental notice that its eyes have opened and is now taking the party in...

Jujo:

You and that Bardic Knowledge. I was wondering if anyone was every going to try to do a Knowledge check on it.

You know that this is an ice elemental. They form in especially cold parts of the Plane of Water and along its border with the Plane of Air, where giant icebergs careen off of world-high waterfalls into the open sky.

They speak the language of Aquan, which is a guttural language from the Plane of Water.

Besides their obvious weakness to fire and their immunity to cold, there is one last thing that you have heard of these creatures being able to do. It is an ability called Ice Glide, where the elemental can pass through non-magical ice and snow as easily as a fish swims through water. Its burrowing leaves behind no tunnel or hole, nor does it create any ripple or other sign of its presence.

I am going to say that we have used up 2 rounds with the conversation and reflecting on what is known about these creatures. You have a few more rounds remaining

17 Sarenith, 4713. Early Evening

The flames that are produced from Revekka's hands completely consume the Icy Creature that attacked Randgríðr. The flame is bright, and the heat from it is intense. Those who keep their eyes on the foe sees the creature within the flame melting away with pain and agony streaking across its face. When the flames disappear, the warmth it brought is gone also. The party is quickly reminded how cold it actually is out here in the Border Woods.

Trawets positions himself to have a clear shot at the fallen, and seemingly helpless, Ice Creature. The ray is a direct hit as the flames cause the area around the hit to melt.

The Ice Creature lays helpless on the ground slowly breathing.

This is my bad, I will need to be more descriptive. X1 - Randgríðr - X2 - Jujo are in a staggered line because of how the Ice Creatures charged from the snow. With cones it would be possible to hit both, but Randgríðr is in the middle of the two. Just let me know what you would like to do.

Jujo stands in defense and a cone of vivid colors comes from his hands like a rainbow of shooting stars. The Ice Creature in front of him collapse to the ground.

@Jujo Taking a 5-foot step is a Miscellaneous Action which is not listed under the actions you can take while staggered.

That being said, your concentration does prevent any AoO

Staggered:

A staggered creature may take a single move action or standard action each round (but not both, nor can he take full-round actions). A staggered creature can still take free, swift, and immediate actions. A creature with nonlethal damage exactly equal to its current hit points gains the staggered condition.


@Jujo since you are staggered you can only make a single move or standard action. Your assumption is correct, but you would also hit Randgríðr. Let me know what you want to do.


17 Sarenith, 4713. Early Evening

Randgríðr moves forward to examine the corpse, Jujo on her heels with the crossbow at the ready. Randgríðr grabs hold of the ankles and she instantly realizes that this body is frozen solid. Not like the body that was encased in ice at the site where the carriages were ambushed, but frozen solid from the weather or possible magical means.

Pulling the body free Randgríðr she sees a face staring in a frozen gaze. Looking past the frost covered face, she would instantly recognize who this person is. It is Old Man Dansby, the man whose crops and livestock were being stolen by something in the woods. Once Ottast sees the face, he too would recognize who it is. Dansby’s farm is the closes farm to the Boarder Wood and Ottast has spent time with Dansby sharing a pint on his porch while talking about that days hunt.

Suddenly, bursting from the snow where the body was two small frozen humanoid figures appear. They continue to move up and attack Randgríðr and Jujo, being the two closest people.

The first one slams against Randgríðr but misses as she sidesteps away from from the creature. Jujo is blindsided as Randgríðr was blocking his vision of these two creatures coming their way. As soon as Jujo is hit there is an Ice Blast that overcomes him and causes him to react slowly to what is happening around him. Jujo takes 3 DMG and 2 Cold DMG, he is also staggered for one round.
