Hey guys, sorry about the delay. Busy weekend with work (didn't get the time I had hoped.) pregens are totally fine with me! Kip, welcome! I think we have 6 with you but I haven't seen tocatta check in yet so that would put us at 5. I'm gonna start going through your characters here shortly. I know you guys are still working on fleshing them out and filling in points which is totally fine. I just want to get a look at it to see how generation goes as well.

DM Jelani wrote:
I'd like to try this. I downloaded the packet a while ago, but then deleted it because I had no one to play with. I'll have to look at it again before making a character.

sounds good, welcome!

I made a discussion thread for us, feel free to head on over....

Here!

Welcome to the Discussion thread for the DnD Next/5E playtest game!

Still a work in progress here but I wanted to give you guys some stuff to work with to start conceptualizing on your side.

For character gen, you guys can use anything that is in the playtest packet. After all, what kind of a test would it be otherwise?

Starting points: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
Starting equipment: Use either your class/background starting stuff or you can use 150 gold to set yourself up with the equipment page.
Specialties: Please feel free to use these.

Bottom line, I want to follow the test as closely as possible at least to start it off. It is an adventure that is broken up into six different chapters, obviously as it progresses we can house-rule and such as we feel fit.

Thread has gone a little quiet. I wanted to check back in and let you guys know things have been slightly hectic with work, I've started reading through the packets a little more throughly. How is everyone else doing with reading? Anyone have ideas about what they'll be playing? I've got a couple days off coming up so I'm hoping to create a game discussion thread shortly.

But just as an interest count we currently have;

Loup
Aroach
Patrik
Toccata

Wonderful. I'm at work for another few hours but I'll do some heavy reading on the packet to get this rolling more.

I haven't read through the whole packet yet, I'm fine with running as a player or the dm. Dmwise it might be a little more time prep wise to look through the packet. But again, I can do so if no one else would want to try to dm the new system.

Ok so on the dnd next playtest FAQ page, towards the bottom it specifically states that you can run a game on a play by post forum. The only requirements is that we don't post the materials, and all players participating have to be signed up in the test.

So, who wants to make a game?!

I believe they opened it up, so long as you're not supplying th materials around yourself. I'll look into it more though.

Nobody? Surprising!

Being hellbent on scorching Goblins, Aglaeca releases a blast that very badly wounds the sharpshooter in the pit. He is bloodied

Verjack's light burns into the goblin and he is left wobbling from the attack.

Down in the pit Sturdy launches another attack on the swarm that has him cornered, he manages to smash a few with a combination of swinging his weapon, stomping his feet and pinning rats between him and the wall.

The tiefling continues to fire blasts of energy across the room which no doubt scare the goblins, but nothing more.
-------------------------------------
Quinn's arrow flies true and lands right between the eyes of the wounded goblin.

Goblin 1 is down

-------------------------------------

The squeaking of the rats grows more fierce as they try to swarm the Goliath once more.

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 241d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

-------------------------------------

The Goblin sharpshooter in the pit swings his short sword amongst the swarming rats at Sturdy as well.

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 81d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

-------------------------------------

Up above and as one Goblin falls dead into the arms of another, anger grows. The Warrior who coddles his comrade lets him go and moves to attack the nearest target, the Cleric.

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 171d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
-------------------------------------

The sharpshooter above the pit decides to move to the edge of the drop and fire off a crossbow shot at the Tiefling.
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 131d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

TURN DAMAGE

Spoiler:

Sturdy Takes 9

For my players

Spoiler:
I cannot tell you how sorry I am about the current infrequency of my posts. My sister has just become sick with swine flu and I've been taking care of her kids and will be doing so for the next few days. I hate to see my game start moving at this slow of a pace and I will be making efforts to speed it up some, I will be dropping out of a couple of my other play by post games as I feel dedicating more time to this game and my one oldest pbp should take priority if I only have limited time to work with for the time being. Thanks for hanging in there.

DM, don't forget that I moved to J3.

Noted, I'll fix it up soon

Unfortunately, Quinn is unable to do any damage to the goblin.

1d10 ⇒ 9 Goblin falling damage

Next to the goblin on the floor the rats continue to gnaw on Sturdy's armor and flesh.

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 251d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

In the hallway nearest Aldric, a new goblin approaches the fight. He and his companion both jab at the Cleric with spears, presumably trying to poke and prod him into the pit.

Goblin 11d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 241d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Goblin 21d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 201d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Of the sharpshooter Goblins the one that is not in the pit on his goblin behind, moves from around the corner and lines up a shot at Verjack.

1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 191d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

The Goblin in the pit stands up and retrieves a short sword and tries to hit the Goliath.
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 131d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Damage for the turns noted above should be 17 damage for Aldric, 6 damage Sturdy, and 6 Damage Verjack

Aldric's mace lands firmly in the ribcage of the goblin in front of him, blood spews from his mouth. hit and bloodied

Behind Aldric, the tiefling Aglaeca is up to his usual tricks. The focus of his attack goes flying towards the pit. 1d20 ⇒ 10 Save vs. falling in.

Down in the pit Sturdy continues to fling rats off of him, crushing them as he does so.

I am back guys, sorry about my absence. It was my birthday this past weekend and my girlfriend took me on a surprise trip, wherein I had no computer access. Let me get you all sorted out and get back to rolling

Neither of Verjacks attacks do anything to the approaching goblinoids, the stand short and menacing as ever.

Aglaeca, feel free to take your action. Sorry about the delays recently guys. The game has been drudging along and I have noticed, I will be stepping up the updates very soon Its just been very hectic at work, I've been helping out at other locations and its just loaded up my schedule. Thank you for being patient with me. I'll have a map update as soon as I can

Quinn makes a valiant effort to hit the goblin across the room but just isn't able to make his target no matter how sure he is of the outcome.

Down in the pit the rats continue to swarm the Goliath.

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 101d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

With the cleric in its face the goblin tries to hold him off while he calls out for help from his comrades.

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 111d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Down the side hall two other goblins emerge armed with crossbows, one of them loads a shot in and fires towards the Tiefling.

1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 231d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Aglaeca takes 10, all other attacks should miss

Sorry about no post yesterday, went car shopping with the girlfriend It ran a little longer than we had hoped haha

The goliath down in the trap lifts his hands bringing with them spikes of earth that tear through the floor of the keep, they pick up multiple rats and harm even more of them. Hit

While the earth is tearing from the ground Aldric makes a running leap over the gap and over the emerging spikes, he hits the ground running and slams his mace into the goblin's rib cage. Hit

The trouble making tiefling steps to the trap to help his friend and unleashes a blast of eldricth energy at them, successfully picking off a few more Hit

The rats have an aura that I had missed, on the start of a turn where an enemy starts next to them they get a basic melee attack as a free action

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 101d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

By the way, visually speaking that was a very cool turn of events.

Suddenly the squeaking of rats intensifies as a swarm of rats peels from cracks in the walls of the pit and begin gnawing on the goliath.

Sure thing, I think that might be a good idea

Sturdy, whereabout did you move to?

As a side note, you all should have 216 more experience from the zombie fight and skill challenge, and 2 Action points.

"Dec druuc'd o shuulkaan tuul dar duun ghec dhalaan?" The goblin grunts out as he breaks off the end of the arrow that sticks into him. The goblin then pokes his spear out again and backs away down the hall fading into darkness.

Aglaeca slumps getting off the cart, steam from the sweat of his last escapade, still rolling off him gently. Lurching in a somewhat alarming manner, Aglaeca grabs a light and point, leading towards the door in the ground.

Speaking back bittersweetly as he leads Aglaeca says, "Don't worry folks, I've done this before. Just follow me and kill everything that moves" .

Aglaeca pulls open the door/hatch if appropriate and enters the hole. Walking with a strong but lurching pace.

The stairway leading down consists of finely crafted stone, perhaps

the work of dwarves. A breeze chills you to the bones as you
take each step down. The flicker of torchlight spills from a room
at the bottom of the stairs.

Aldric Casternall wrote:

Aldric looks and listens warily to discern if the party's arrival has been noticed.

Perception 1d20+5=13

You cannot tell if someone knows you are here now but, it is apparent from tracks on the ground that someone has been here recently and has since retreated into the keep.

Aglaeca, I'm not sure I follow. What are you spending the surge for? my first inclination is to say yes. I have faith in all of your ideas for an interesting story and game. :)

Tier 3 Successxp will be along shortly

The adventurers do a fine job of navigating the crudely hallowed out tunnels, it is clear that most if not all besides the current track you've found are not complete by a long shot. It is also hard to say why or how this tunnel system exists at this time.

After a short time of travel the cart lands back onto a track seamlessly and it glides out into a glade, to the right of you is a small wooden shack that looks more like a check in station for the carts but. The real sight is what is directly in front of you.

Great piles of shattered stone blocks and scorched timbers dominate the clearing, sprawling out from its center to the edge of the woods. No
plants grow among the ruins or within the clearing. The ground is bare dirt, and although the forest has begun to reclaim the path leading here, it has not intruded into the ruins of Shadowfell
Keep.

Yet clearly someone has tampered with the ruins. In the center of the debris, stone blocks and timbers have been gathered into a pile. Someone has cleared a path through the rubble and pulled aside the wreckage to reveal a stone staircase. The staircase descends into darkness.

Dathom

Spoiler:
I want to thank you for your honesty. Life can get busy and I totally understand, I hope all your other games go well. Also, thanks for sticking with us at least this far and supporting my first pbp dm endeavor.

Verjack, that perception roll makes the dc so if you'd like you can lower the nature dc for the primaries

Tier 3: Navigating the Tunnels;

Major Skills: Streetwise, Nature.
Minor Skills: Athletics/Acrobatics, Perception

2 Successes, 0 Failures

The cart moves briskly down the track as it splits off into about eight different tracks, all of them moving parallel to each other in a large room. Each track is separated by beams and you can see that some areas of the adjacent tracks are coming apart and being bombarded by falling rocks. Suddenly Your cart comes off the track and begins to move out of control but Aglaeca's quick magical ability keeps the cart floating above the ground and weaving between the beams and falling debris. Now more than ever the direction and instincts of your party is crucial.

As the Adventurers try to get their cart moving, Verjack has a spark of memory. These carts seem to be modeled off of magical train system you have heard of, and sure enough you find a small stone underneath the chassis as Sturdy lifts it up. What you know about this stone is that it is a means of defining the direction of a cart such as this, and all you need to make it work is an able magic user.

Karn helps secure the loose stone in its place, the rest of the adventurers get into the cart and Aglaeca focuses his magic on the stone. Slowly the wheels begin to turn and with the help of Aldric, The cart begins to speed up down the tracks.

Tier 2, Success

Tier 3: Navigating the Tunnels;

Major Skills: Streetwise, Nature.
Minor Skills: Athletics/Acrobatics, Perception

Tier 2: Getting the Carts Moving;

Major Skills: Arcana, History.
Minor Skills: Acrobatics, Endurance

Aldric and Quinn look over the tracks above and below them that are faintly glowing with magic and begin to try to tap into it, together they are able to make some progress as Aglaeca steps onto the cart alongside them and has a much easier time himself channeling the arcane energy that fuels this mechanism.

2 Successes, 0 Failures

All secondary skills still available to lower primaries.

Tier 1, Success

The cart lands level on the tracks and once Sturdy stands on it, the cart rolls a tiny bit as if to let you know that travel is now possible. In fact as soon as it is firmly in place you can feel the presence of energy in the room. With a little elbow grease and some magic you might be able to get this cart moving.

Tier 2: Getting the Carts Moving;

Major Skills: Arcana, History.
Minor Skills: Acrobatics, Endurance

Tier 2, All Aboard!

Tier 1: Getting the carts back on the track;
Major Skills: Athletics, Thievery.
Minor Skills: Dungeoneering, Perception

Aldric assists Sturdy by showing him the best place to get leverage on the cart, While Aglaeca does his best to help with the lifting. The Goliath uses his strength to lift one side of the cart successfully back onto the track.

Quinn, standing with Karn notices something about the way the track locks the cart into place once it's in the right location.

Ok minor skills are now out, you have successfully lowered the primaries as much as possible

2 Success, 0 Failures

Tier 1: Getting the carts back on the track;
Major Skills: Athletics, Thievery.
Minor Skills: Dungeoneering, Perception

Sturdy points out some key wheel locks and track alignment issues to help the group get things back on track so to speak.

Thievery DC lowered

Aglaeca takes note of Sturdy's advice and is able to open up the wheel locks so they can be properly placed on the track.

Heh you only just barely made that one thanks to sturdy

1 Success, 0 Failures
Perception can no longer be used to lower the primaries
