___________________________________________ PERSONALITY
Cyanne is an upbeat optimist out for adventure. Trees are meant to be climbed, roads traveled, and people met. She's somewhat impulsive, and being "musetouched" songs come to her so spontaneously that she sometimes sings them even when it's not appropriate to do so. Her school and its mantra, "Be What You Dare", had a tremendous influence on her. She hero worships her two teachers, Aron and Lirpeth, and trusts elves as a result far more than she should. She's loving, warm and loyal. Because of the challenges of being a young aasimar growing up amongst humans, she tends to live in the now rather than think overmuch about the future. A former burlesque dancer, she doesn't mind showing off her body, but she's not always aware of the effect her appearance has on people. People generally like her and she likes them too, so she can be blissfully unaware that social situations can be more challenging for others. ___________________________________________ BACKGROUND
Early Childhood Cyanne was a miller's daughter from the prosperous and respected family that ran Restov's Fairhill Mill. Though the eldest of four children, the circumstances of her strange heritage meant that she was destined to be the baby of the family. Born with a tuft of fine blue hair, but otherwise apparently human, she caused an initial string of accusations and unhappiness amongst her parents. Had there been an infidelity? Fortunately, her features so strongly resembled her father that the accusations soon died down. Still her parents kept her hair covered with caps and bonnets, not wanting the stigma that oddness might bring in their tight-knit, Erastil-worshipping community. Other oddnesses about their strange daughter soon became apparent. When first taught to read, she'd often sit in the dark at night, reading without a single lamp. And her growth soon slowed down, compared to her siblings, each of whom outgrew her while she still remained a very young child -- bright, small, curious. Iosef Miller, Cyanne's father, had grown up on the stories of his adventuring grandmother, the one who had earned the stake that allowed Fairhill Mill to be built. In desperation, he sought out one of his grandmother's adventuring companions, an elven bard named Lirpeth who now ran a magical academy in Restov. Lirpeth recognized the child for what she was -- an aasimar. "It's rare but not surprising," Lirpeth says. "Your grandmother was a paladin. I've always suspected that there was angel blood in her family tree." Lirpeth offered to take the child to her school for training, but the Millers were reticent. Cyanne was still so young. Sending such a small child to a boarding school seemed harsh. Matters came to a head a few years later. A pack of neighbor children attacked her, chanting, "Changeling, Changeling, go home to your Fey forest!" when Cyanne's younger siblings, now all teenagers, were off tending the Mill. Cyanne was nineteen, but looked no older than a child of seven or eight. The little girl lashed out, casting glitterdust upon her tormentors. Though her attackers were only temporarily blinded, the rumors of the incident spread, and the families of the other children demanded that the Millers do something about their freakish child. School Years So Cyanne was sent off before the age of twenty to the Aron Lirpeth Academy, a boarding school run by two elves, Lirpeth and her partner Aron, for training and molding talented youngsters with magical gifts. The school was a revelation. Located in a mansion in Restov's fashionable quarter, it had the motto, Be What You Dare, inscribed over the entryway along with a painting of a pair of mongeese -- the school's mascot familiars. Upon entering school, Lirpeth pulled the hat from Cyanne's head, saying, "You don't need to hide what you are here." The academy had a wonderful group of young misfits training there. Many were bastard children from noble families, sent off to learn something useful. There were elves, half-elves, humans, a few half-orcs and even one gnome studying there. No longer the only odd one, she bloomed. During the daytime, she played with the mongeese, clambered out of windows, balanced on ledges and hung upside down from trees. At night, she read every book she could find. When Lirpeth and Aron's familiars had a litter of mongoose pups, Cyanne received a snow white pup that she named, "Tango." Her little furry friend accompanied her wherever she went, becoming her constant friend and companion. Lirpeth trained her in music, dance and magic. Cyanne chose for her deity Shelyn, feeling a harmony of her body and her soul as she immersed herself in the arts. She still saw her family on their weekly visits to her, but it felt like she and they were living in two different time streams. During her long childhood, she watched as her three siblings grew up, married, and had children of their own. Lirpeth, Aron and Tango became her constants, and she became as fluent in Elvish as she was in common. Young Adulthood After her father Iosef died when she was 52, Cyanne decided to leave Restov and the Aron Lirpeth Academy to try apprenticing with New Stetven's prestigious Ballet Royale. She was the human equivalent of a thirteen year old girl, but dancers start their careers very young indeed. Cyanne thrived there as a chorus dancer for a few years until she got her adolescent growth spurt. She rejected an unwanted offer of patronage, and then got told by the Maestra that she'd grown over the Ballet's strict height limits for dancers. She found herself blacklisted, with no other ballet company willing to take her as a dancer. Undaunted, still wanting to dance, she investigated other options. Telling herself, Be What You Dare, she stepped through the garishly painted doors of the Bounce Burlesque theatre. While many of the acts there were crude or titillating, some were unique and original pieces of art. Most of the costumes were about as scanty as they had been in ballet, though a bit more risqué. Here, instead of blending in as one of a chorus, she could take center stage. Here, she had the possibility of being a star. Swallowing her nervousness, she auditioned there with several original acts. Some of her dances were performances with Tango as her dance partner. One popular number featured an almost comedic presentation of a girl trying to catch her "sneaky" mongoose pet who outwits her at every turn until she collapses on the stage with the "victorious" mongoose on top of her. Her most famous piece of choreography was her whip dance, where she would come on stage in a tiny blue leather costume, doing acrobatic cartwheels and swinging around on her leather whip. Sometimes she would hang suspended from her own musical notes, held in place with a solid note spell. In between the acrobatics, she played with the audience, snapping her whip or sometimes looping it over an unsuspecting member of the audience and pulling them into the act. Back to Restov When Cyanne turned 65 came the news that her mother, Ilsa, was desperately ill. Cyanne returned to Restov, performing nights at the Restive Rose Theater and spending mornings nursing her mother side by side with her now aged siblings. Once again, she found herself at Fairhill Mill, but this time not wearing a scarf over her head. Her eldest brother Marco was stiff and disapproving at first around her, especially upon hearing that she danced Burlesque. However, one night Cyanne spotted him and her sister Mari in the audience, watching her act. The two were sitting, frumpy in their church dress clothes, watching the acts that had preceded Cyanne's with no expressions on their faces at all. But when Cyanne took stage, they started to laugh with everyone else at Tango's antics and her mock dismay. They applauded, and the next week they showed up with Cyanne's other brother, Mikal -- and flowers. Marco admitted, "I don't like that you dance here, but you have a gift. Keep dancing." This was the longest period of time she could remember spending with her family, and she treasured every moment of reconnecting with them. She discovered her sister Mari's sense of humor, and the honorableness of her brothers. Most of all, she discovered how much her mother and the others had loved her, and how hard it had been for them to give her up. The Calistrian Temple, intrigued by her whip dance, invited Cyanne to teach their acolytes. She eagerly accepted and met Svetlana, a young and beautiful courtesan. Over the dance lessons, the two struck up a close friendship, with Svetlana offering Cyanne much comfort over the failing health of her mother. Cyanne was overjoyed when Svetlana announced that she was leaving the Temple to marry, but she worried that Oleg was too dour and stodgy for her friend. The Present Time After her mother's death, Cyanne felt lost. Cyanne quit her job at the Restive Rose even though she was a popular attraction. When Svetlana invited Cyanne to come out to the frontier with her, Cyanne agreed. It was time for a fresh start. Time to do something else with her life and discover the beauties of nature and the frontier. ___________________________________________ NPC CONTACTS
Cyanne's Siblings: Marco, Mikal and Mari: * Marco, age 67. A life time of hefting huge sacks of flour has left him lean and muscled, even with age. Although a somewhat stern, he is respected for his scrupulous fair dealings. Runs Fairhill Mill with his wife and daughters. * Mari, age 65. A laughing woman who married the local tailor in a love match. For a while, Cyanne and her were close playmates when she was 7-8, and she's never forgotten their games of let's pretend. She secretly loves Cyanne's naughtier costumes and has sewn up several new ones for her. * Mikal, age 63. The only one of the siblings who's overweight. Mikal is also the quietest and shyest of the three siblings. Mikal apprenticed with the local baker as a teenager and later married the baker's daughter. He's renowned for his desserts, which he eats far too much of. He runs Mikal's Delights, a patisserie near Restov's main square that gets a lot of business with the elite. Cyanne's Teachers: Lirpeth and Aron * Lirpeth. Middle aged elven bard, retired from adventuring to run an academy for magic for the less common magic practitioners along with her partner, Aron. A staunch individualist and a seeker of talent, Lirpeth does not suffer fools gladly. Although very talented, her penchant for political satire has gotten her in trouble with just about every noble house in Restov. It is only Lirpeth's friendship with Elanna Lebeda, a romantic interest of King Noleski, that has saved the bard from being jailed and her school shut down. Elanna was a former student of Lirpeth's, and enjoys the bard's acid wit. Although Lirpeth at first raised an eyebrow at Cyanne's choice of dancing career to replace ballet, she admires that the girl has forged her own path. * Aron. Middle aged elven witch, extremely clever. His name means nobly-born, so he enjoys the irony that many of his students are bastard children of the elite. (There will be more about this character in Luthor's background.) Cyanne's Friends: Svetlana, Oleg, Caramir * Svetlana. Pregnant newlywed with a naughty past with the Calistrian temple. Cyanne's current best friend. * Oleg. Svetlana's protective and dour husband. He's rather dubious about Cyanne's influence on his wife. * Caramir. Elven ranger / mage. Cyanne's first crush from school days, they had a short lived and innocent romance when they were both very young. Then she left to dance in New Stetvan, and Caramir apprenticed to a ranger corps. Though Caramir inspired her first angsty breakup song, she still thinks of him with fondness. _______________________________________________________________ Cyanne's Past Incarnation:
This is Cyanne's Old Sheet from her deceased heavens oracle character from Lost City Cyanne died after she received a fateful vision from her goddess that led to her sacrificing herself to save others. Backstory: Cyanne was a miller's daughter from a fairly prosperous and respected family in the small country town of Fairhill. She was always a daring child. On warm nights, she would clamber out of her window and on to the roof of the mill, where she would watch the patterns of the stars in the sky, and make up names and stories for the constellations that she saw. The stars in her stories were heroes, always watching out for the people and guiding them through the dark. Sometimes, her little sister Mari would climb up with her and they would snuggle under the blankets while they watched the stars together. Once, when they were out, they saw a series of stars fall from the sky, one after another. "What's happening?" Mari cried. "Where are the stars going?" And all of a sudden, Cyanne knew the answer. She knew it the way a colt knows how to walk when it is first born. It was an instinct, but it felt utterly right. "They're giving their lives," Cyanne said. "They've pledged themselves as protectors, and sometimes they have to fall to earth and become mortal to save someone worth watching. You see, we watch the stars, and they watch us." Could I do that? Cyanne wondered. Could I leave my life and everyone I knew for the sake of total strangers? Could I ever be as brave as a star? It was a night a few weeks later when Cyanne found her answer. The village kids all took turns with the local watchmen on the watch tower. It was a beloved chore, because it meant that you had no evening chores and your parents would milk the cows in the morning in your place. That night it was the turn of her sister Mari and the tailor's boy, Brandon. They were watching with old man Fenrik, the oldest of the local watchmen. The town laughed that Fenrik could barely hear, but he still had eyes as keen as an owls at night, and Fenrik took pride in the task. Out of loneliness, Cyanne climbed to the mill's roof alone that night when she heard screams, and realized to her horror the watch tower was on fire. She didn't remember climbing down the wall, or running across the town to the watch tower -- though her knees were scabbed and her bare feet bleeding, so surely she must have done so. All she could remember were the flames, and dashing into them like a crazy person instead of running the other way. The smoke was thick in the tower, but all she could think of were Mari, Brandon and poor old Fenrik. As she made it to the top, she found them. Mari screamed, "Cyanne! What are you doing? You didn't have to come die with us!" That was when Cyanne realized that there was no way back. The flames were fully engulfing the tower. She grabbed her sister. "I couldn't let you die alone!" And then she heard a voice in her head, My child, my glorious, shining child... Do you trust the stars? Do you trust in me? She looked up in wonder and said, "Yes!" Then grab the hands of your friends and walk towards me. Not knowing what would happen, she grabbed Mari and Brandon and stepped out onto open sky. And as she did, a bridge of moonlight appeared beneath her feet. She sent the two younger children running down it, and then grabbed and dragged the terrified and stumbling old Fenrik. "Where did this bridge come from?" She screamed back, "Does it matter?" When she got down to the ground, the whole village was watching. The moment Cyanne took a step off the bridge, it disappeared. As she hugged her parents, her mother exclaimed, "Your hair!" All of Cyanne's hair and eyebrows had been singed clean away. ___________________________ When it grew back, her hair came in a deep blue -- the color of the sky just after the sun has set, but before the light went completely away. Everyone began to whisper of the miracle. Surely, a god had touched the child. But which one? Cyanne climbed the mill's roof again to talk to the stars. "Please, voice of the stars. Tell me who you are." I am Kel. I gave myself that mankind may live, but I am now forgotten. "Not by me! I will bring you back. I will bring you back somehow." It was at that moment, a different voice, colder and stronger, then the first, arose. THEN YOU WILL KNOW MY CURSE, FOR I AM HEL AND I WILL HAUNT YOU. KEL IS DEAD, AND NONE SHALL BRING HER BACK. The voice frightened her so much, she awoke. She had fallen asleep on the roof, stargazing. Had these names of gods -- one forgotten, one present yet evil -- had they just been a dream? She shuddered. "No," she whispered, "I don't think so." _____________________________ The next day, she started having kitchen accidents, losing her keys, having things move when she did not will them to do so. There were spirits about her, and they would not leave her alone. Fearing for her family, she left her home as soon as she came of age. She is still following her stars, seeking to find clues and answers of both Kel, the forgotten god who serves as her patron, and Hel, the goddess of death who cursed her with malevolent spirits. Description: Cyanne looks young -- maybe eighteen -- and looks very much like her avatar, except for without the funky chain jewelry on her face! Her blue hair does not look dyed. She looks lean and lightly muscled and is wearing a chain shirt as armor. Her accent is not from Endhome, but not from the small villages around here, either. Whoever her parents were, they could afford some education for the girl. She has a symbol pinned to her chest that people may not immediately recognize without a Religion Check. It is a miniature wooden white kite shield with a single blue star painted lovingly upon it. It is of course the symbol of the dead and forgotten goddess, Kel. Equipment: Long spear
Crunch: Cyanne
