It doesn't seem as if this is designed to let you be adventurous without indulging in PvP. I'm sure some think I just want to avoid danger but that isn't the case. I don't mind if the wilderness is ful of dangerous beasts to battle. Maybe I'll run into monsters I can't beat and be killed, or forced to run away, or come across some other players and team up. That sort of interaction maintains danger and is fun, but I'm much happier being hunted by an emotionless collection of pixels than a fellow human who thinks killing anyone wandering around is funny. This sums up my concern quite well. I totally get how the concept of the game is supposed to work and respect that if achieved, will make for a very interesting game. But, I fear the human element. There will be folks in the game who's sole mission will be to make life difficult for other players. And while I know this isn't PnP Pathfinder, but can you imagine a campaign where there were only these pillars of civilization and instant death awaited you if you stepped outside of them? Yes, I know it is a different thing to be an MMO, but if you do not account for those that want to do the above, you are going to lose a large portion of the community and the game will turn into faction vs. faction. If the game does not account for some reasonable expectation that you can wander about, then it may lose me. And, if that is to be the case and the game is heading in that direction, ok, I accept that it may not be for me. I can accept the 'non-consensual PvP' and respect that this aspect of the game will be interesting, as long as the consequences are appropriate. But, I also want the chance to 'see the world' and I need some ability to do so, without the feeling of complete dread in the attempt. Stealth, Invisibility, Speed, Flight...something I can do to break glass in case of emergency when the world at large imposes its will upon me. If I go down, fine, as long as I feel I had a fighting chance. If I am ganked at every step...not sure I will be able to keep with the game. There is not always going to be the opportunity to travel in groups. And how many is enough? Perhaps I need to shift my mindset. In any case, I am in for the short term at least and I am very interested to see how this plays out. As someone said before, I just want to be sure these concerns are considered now in the design, and not patched in later. --Bart ![]()
![]() Addendum to my above post. I just read Ryan's post about Player vs Player conflict, and he is saying the game will have basically what I was suggesting above. Still, outside these NPC areas, it will be very interesting to see what happens, and what can be done if one side dominates the other and dictates play. --Bart ![]()
![]() I am very curious to see how this evolves over the game as well. My fear is that the 'evil' community will overwhelm the 'good' community making it a constant struggle, as not everyone is going to enjoy this aspect. I think about SWtoR and how it was an overwhelming dark side community. People seem to want to be evil and make a living out of ganking, or dominating a game and making it an unpleasant experience for those who are not on that side. Obviously, PFO is a different game, but I have a fear that if left up to the 'community' we end up with an unbalanced game. Would it make sense to have some type of policing in game? I mean, if you kill someone in public, then 'The Watch' gets involved. And I would not expect people to play the Watch but this is a part of the coding. So, if you are wanted, then it is more difficult to go about without being captured. I do not know what works best, but this may become an issue as Cah111 posted about EVE; there are going to be people that have a single purpose to either make players lives miserable, or to dominate or change the game to their own nefarious purpose. Once these people find each other in game, it can become a tide of evil. --Bart ![]()
![]() OK, I am in. I agree that getting to market sooner, will increase the chance of success for this project. Plus, getting in and getting established early, does have a nice draw. Thanx for the nudge everyone. I now await my inevitable 'backer creep' that somehow finds me crawling up the levels... --Bart ![]()
![]() Hello All, So, as the title suggest, I am on the fence a bit about this next Kickstarter, and I am not exactly sure why. As you can see from my status, I am certainly 'invested' in seeing this project make it to light, and I am personally excited at the prospects of what the game promises. I just find myself holding back a bit and I need some gentle pushing from the community, me thinks. I think my problem lies in my skepticism surrounding accelerated schedules, which is the main driver of this effort. Being involved in, and having seen, many software development efforts, the inevitable 'slipped' schedule seems almost a formality. So, investing money into advancing a development schedule seems to me something that does not have a solid footing, as I expect schedules to slip and any 'investment in time' to lose its value. And perhaps, this is where my problem lies, focusing too much on the schedule. I mean, even $100 gets you some decent 'loot', some time in the game and an 'Early' access. Perhaps I should look here and not get some caught up in the technical nature of the Kickstarter? Admittedly, I am not much of a guild person, but clearly this is a large aspect of the game. A 'shadow guild' would be very interesting to me honestly. So, am I not as enticed by the Guild benefits at the higher levels? Clearly, I need to decipher my own motivations, but I am curious as to what others, who many have gone through a similar thought process, or those that have gone 'all in', can pass along their experiences to give me that nudge I need. It seems a reachable goal...10,000 people pledging $100 gets to the target, and certainly the $100 pledge level seems worth while. This would create a solid initial community, and perhaps another motivation for the Kickstarter. I am not looking for additional incentives, just something more tangible to latch on to. Being an East Coaster, I am off to sleep soon, so I will respond to any discussion in the 'morning' but I am genuinely interested in what others feel on this subject. --Bart ![]()

Well done Saint Mac! I kicked myself up to $500 because I felt strongly about the potential that may come from this! I look forward to what may come from Goblinworks and only have positive intentions about the future! Enjoy the Alpha and make sure it does us proud! Regards, Bart ![]()
![]() Ah...now I remember why I do not post on the internet/forums. There is always the vocal minority that will find a way to twist the good intentions and generosity of others, or just find a way to diminish a good intention. There is more than one way to look at something, and it always disappoints me the large proportion of people that want to see the negative in something meant as a positive. I wish nothing but the best for Goblinworks! I really feel, as my contribution showed, that they will deliver something new and exciting to the community that I also am eager to see come to fruition. You naysayers out there can twist my intentions to make it seem like I am an elitist, out to take advantage of the gifts that were presented. But that is not the intention, despite the greater wisdom that the 'internet' knows about me. Regards, Bart ![]()

Hey Doc! No, you have me all wrong. Not meant as an elitist, superior or better than anyone guild. Just a way to have folks bond over what is a very exciting opportunity for the Pathfinder community. I am not looking for favor, special treatment or a pat on the back. If you look at my post count, you rarely see me say much on the boards and I typically do not join a guild in an MMO. I am looking at an opportunity to build something from what I see as a very positive endeavor. I am sorry that you saw this in such a negative light. Regards, Bart ![]()
![]() Just starting a thread to collect the folks who pledged at the $250 level. I figure we should join forces in the future game and create ourselves a guild and carve out a kingdom. Sound off here and tell us about yourself. Me...Bart Koehler of NJ. DM of a regular Pathfinder game, father of 3 and been gaming more than the statistics indicate I should. Actively playing Diablo III and SWtoR now and again. I had a maxed LotR character at one point, but have not been back there in a while. Looking forward to what this game will bring. There is a little blurb about Monastic Orders in the FRCS on page 25. That is all I could find about them, but they worship Shar, so there may be more information about them in the deities guide. ![]()

Interstingly enough, the sorcerer character is going to start off as a rogue and then switch to sorecerer at 2nd. This may help with any of the early trouble. With the cleric/ninja this should help balance the party. Someone suggested a wand of Cure Light for the bard, this is a great idea and if they don't come up with this solution on their own, I will have to slip one in. I suppose I am most concerned about the first encounter on the Blue Nixie. If they can somehow fall into their roles, it should go ok. ![]()

Our paladin has had to swim a few times and either has had to use potions of swimming OR take his armor off so he didn't sink like a rock. Now he has been knocked unconscious MANY times in this game so far. He usually goes below 0 once or twice a game. HeHe...this is the part I am actually looking forward to :) ![]()

Thanx to everyone for their responses, all were extremely helpful. I am going to see how they gell as a group and then decide if there are any holes. I am sure they will figure that out on their own without my interference. As for the Bard, he seems set on the character so I will have to let you know how it goes. I have never seen a bard actually stay a bard as they usually spin off into some prestige class. He is the newest player and I am not sure why he settled on bard, but he seems determined so I shall let him blaze his own path and hopefully sing a few songs about his exploits. ![]()
![]() I am just getting ready to start the Savage Tide and my players have finalized their characters. For those of you that have run this adventure path, do I need to add in any additional NPC's to support this party based upon the following: Aasimar Paladin
I know this is not as exotic as some of the party compositions I saw in that thread, but that was by design. I wanted them to stick to the more standard races for this game. I am seeing a possible lack of up front hitting power and a possible lack of healing at higher levels, depending upon where the cleric goes. It looks like we have one primary figher and 4 support characters. This may or may not work depending upon how they play it. They are very experienced players, so they may be able to pull it off. Any thoughts? |
