Andrew L Klein wrote: Your total roll can never go below 0, but can reach 0. Keep in mind, individual dice can still go below zero ("Roll 4d4 and subtract 2 from each die rolled), but the total combined will never go negative. Thanks! I think this point about the ability of individual dice to go below zero is the issue I was trying to clarify. In effect, you tally up all the +s and -s in one column, then total the faces of the dice in a second column, then add the two columns together, considering any negative final result to be zero.
This makes, for example, a d6-2 SUBSTANTIALLY inferior to a d4, because the -2 counts, even if you roll a 1 on the d6. One third of the time, rolling that d6-2 doesn't help you, and 1/6 of the time it actually hurts you.
Thanks!
If you are instructed to roll a d6-1, or a d4-1, etc, is the intention that you COULD get a 0?
I suspect the answer is yes, but just in case...
Thanks!
If a card allows you to add a d4-1 to a roll, is the intention for a range of 0-3, or 1-3? It seems like it would be 0-3, but that's not much use if you roll a 1 - if it's meant to be beneficial it would make more sense for the range to bottom out at 1.
This sounds legal to me, too, but maybe not so productive. In most cases when you don't actually defeat the bane, it gets shuffled back into the location deck, so eventually you'll need to fight something, or the blessings deck will run out before you complete your scenario.
Theryon Stormrune wrote: None of those work because the roll is not a "check" and therefore you cannot enhance the roll.
Unless you have an item or power or something that specifically says "adding to a roll" and not adding to a check.
I wondered about this, actually. What makes it not a check? Is it the absence of a specified skill?
This barrier sticks around until the person encountering it rolls a 6 on a d6. Am I correct that there's nothing really you can do to modify the die roll?
For example:
* Can you play a blessing to roll an extra d6? If so, do you succeed on a total of 6 or higher, or do you need to roll an actual 6 on at least one of the dice?
* Can you play an ally or item or use a power that allows you to increase your check by some number, making a total of 6 more likely?
* Can you play a card or use a power that lets you reroll a failed check?
I'm thinking that none of these works, and that you just have to suck it up and roll exactly a 6 on exactly one d6, but if that's not true, I'd like to know...
Thanks!
I handled it the latter way, but I wasn't entirely comfortable with the decision.
The villain Karsos says "If undefeated, summon and build the location Maze and move there."
I failed to defeat Karsos because of not having anything to give my check the Magic trait, so I summoned and built Maze and moved there. Then I failed every Intelligence check trying to move away from there, so I ran through the location deck and closed the location. Now Maze was a closed location on my table.
Later, I again failed to defeat Karsos because of not having the magic trait.
Should I have reopened the Maze location with a new deck at that point?
Thanks!
IN WoR, the location "Manor House" has the following "When Closing" instruction: "Summon and acquire a random ally".
Does this mean you need to succeed at the check to acquire the random ally, or do you just put the random ally in your hand and close the location?
Thanks!
I think only Ranzak could get the extra exploration, and that in order to do so he would need to actually DEFEAT the bane. Since he's evading it, I think the extra explore just doesn't trigger.
This thread reminds me of a related question I've had for a while: Are there plans for higher-level adventure paths, such as you might take your RotR characters through after completing RotR?

The most recent few messages leave me with a new question:
At what point do you win and the scenario is over?
Andrew L Klein wrote: Yes you can, but only one of them. Oh, yes. Important safety tip - thanks!
I Rum Punch you can grab the allies from the ally pile when you are about to fight the villain. You can then reveal any number of allies for +1 per ally. Can you also use the powers of any of those allies to influence the check?
Based on this discussion of Lini the Druid, I think you probably can, but I'd like to get a clear ruling.

Thanks!
I wonder if these from-the-box scenarios are rewards-light so that the characters aren't too powerful when they begin box 1 in the adventure path itself.
In practice, really, that means this scenario has no reward. :(
In the Rum Punch scenario for Skull & Shackles, you add any allies you acquire to an ally pile. When you fight the villain (Nefti Unwesha), you can add all of those allies to your hand, and reveal them for a bonus on your check to defeat her. Once you've defeated the villain, the scenario ends and you get a reward.
The reward for Rum Punch is that you can keep all of those allies from the ally pile, but since you have almost certainly already added those to the deck of whoever fought the villain, those allies are already in the party and available for trading around when you rebuild your decks at the end of the scenario. That is, you can keep those cards regardless of the reward.
Since you gain all of those allies before fighting the villain, I don't understand what the reward for completing the scenario adds.
I assume I'm missing something crucial - can someone help me figure it out please?
Thanks!
You'll want to be careful if they use wood for the boxes - probably have them line it with fabric or something - paper products stored in wood sometimes succumb to acid from the wood over the longer term. Most stuff is printed on acid-free paper nowadays, so it will last a lot longer than cards and things did in the olde dayes, but wood is not acid free.
It would be nice if the mats actually showed the details of the characters' abilities, skills, and powers.
Andrew K wrote: One more correction Racicot. Skills don't "default" to anything. If a skill is listed on your card, then that tells you what it is. If it is not on your card, it's a d4, period. If you don't have Melee on your card and you choose to use it, you don't get your Strength in any way, shape, or form. However, it can still sometimes be a good choice if you have cards that only affect Melee checks and not Strength. Oh yeah - this is an important safety tip - thanks for the clarification!!!

Just to follow up on the details and implications of the word "Combat":
This is what I understand from the thread so far:
* If the check to defeat a monster says "Combat" it is a combat check.
* If the check doesn't say "Combat" it is not a combat check.
* Damage from failing a check that says "Combat" is combat damage.
* Damage from failing a check that does not say "Combat" is not combat damage.
This leaves me with two questions:
First:
Am I right in the following belief?:
If the check to defeat a monster says "Combat" you must use either the Melee skill (which defaults to Strength), or the Ranged skill (which defaults to Dexterity), unless a card (such as a spell) specifically allows you to use some other skill (such as Arcane or Divine).
Second:
The Blessing of Shelyn talks about a "non-Combat Wisdom checks": Doesn't this imply that there are Combat Wisdom Checks, for which the Blessing of Shelyn would provide only ONE extra die? If so, what would be an example of such a Wisdom Check (that would allow the player to use a Blessing of Shelyn to roll only one extra die)?
Thanks!

Thanks for this very thorough explanation!
I never received an email confirming my payment method, and this morning my subscriptions page doesn't show a September subscription AT ALL. Instead, all material (including the duplicate S&S base set!) from the September shipment has been moved to my October subscription.
Has the September shipment been cancelled, or is this just another "display glitch"?

Thanks! That is just a glitch, which pretty much everyone is experiencing. It will get fixed. If on the off chance it isn't, when you get your "confirmation" email for the September subscription if it is still on there, contact customer service then. Awesome. Thanks!
