Hrm...well, I was DMing one night, a homebrew game, with nothing but the sickest concepts the players could bring to the table. I had a vast library of gaming books, and opened it up to them and told them no holds barred. They could bring whatever they wanted to the table. This was 3.5 and loosely based within the Forgotten Realms setting. Every DM should try this at least once! Very challenging to provide good encounters for a party of serious POWER GAMERS! Did I mention that there were 7 players? = I fondly called this dungeon the Dungeon of Doom. Each night a new level down, and each night, it was my solemn duty to come up with whatever I could to get to a TPK, within the rules. Each level had its own theme, a way to foreshadow what the BBEG was for the level. I spent one whole night, setting up the BBEG fight for an Great Wyrm White Dragon. This thing had a pet drake btw. One player had a Monk Spellfire Wielder. Really a great character, optimized to the hilt, and well done. He spent the whole level absorbing magic cast at him, and having the group cast magic at him to keep storing up mojo. Just before the drake fight, he finally topped out, where if he had absorb any more magic, he would have exploded...no seriously. It was in there in 3.5 FR. Look in the books, man. Anyway, I describe the room they step into, the interior of an icy glacier. I describe the drake coming on scene...scales, toothy maw, screams, that kind of thing. The players assumed it was a Dragon and UNLOADED! The spellfire wielder gave it literally everything he had, and ripped this thing to shreds in one blast basically. He laughed, stating that he was essentially useless for the rest of the level compared to what he had done. High fives around the table, and calls for entering the next room to get at that hoard. They slipped on the ice in the next room, and another character fell and slid all the way to the bottom of this little hill, right into a Great Wyrm white dragon, waking it up. As I described this dragon roaring, and the bits or roof of this cave coming down...you should have seen their faces...especially spellfire-boy! That moment made all the years spent gaming up to that point TOTALLY worth it! I did not succeed that night in my quest for a TPK, but boy did I make a good run for it! Please note: the tpk thing is not my usual policy, but it was a way to spice things up for the players. EDIT: Punctuation...it saves lives.
Actually, call them, ask to speak to a manager. Explain who you are, explain about your order. Tell them about this article, and let them know that you want to cancel your order. Really, talking to the manager, and discussing the article are kinda over the top, but it lets them know you mean business, and that you are not backing down. Also, if you are in fact thirteen (which I am not doubting), then make sure you have your parents/legal guardian present, or have them do the talking for you. Good luck, and I am sorry about your book order. I empathize with waiting for books, only to find out that there are some shenanigans going on.
Thank you all for the speedy replies. I was leaning in that direction (i.e. Having them volunteer), but the group has already reached the point where they are all at least indifferent. I was just wondering if there was an intent to have the diplomacy check be more involved with getting them to participate in the setting up camp and all. Thank you once again,
Hello there, I had a player ask a great question, and I could not find the answer. I admit upfront that my search-fu is weak at times. His question was: Do you need to roll a diplomacy check, as discussed on page 94 of the core book, to get the cast-a-ways to fill camp roles? Under their headings, it says that they may fill these rolls, but not that they volunteer for it. My initial feeling is to have them volunteer, but then what are the point of the morale and attitude mechanics affecting diplomacy DC's in the first place?
Thank you Ashiel for your treatment on Rodge. It was enlightening to see the spell choices and the class choices you picked, and I certainly agree with many here that you have opened up my eyes to the world of the 15 point buy! If you have time, at some point the witch battlefield controller would be an interested option to see, as I have never played the class myself, but if you don't have the time or inclination, no worries! Thank you so much for what you do! Me.
Watching Addie separate some items from the general pile, Wart goes over and watches her, making verbal notes himself, assisting her in identification of the mundane items, but also trying to identify the liquids himself. He also stands, and tosses out random bits of theory he has picked up on the knowledge of arcana to assist Addie. Identifying Skill checks::

Got the +2 bonus to knowledge (arcana) for: Actually can one aid another with untrained checks? if not, disregard the last section on aid another k(arcana) checks and results.
Upon careful reconsideration, that request I have made seems unnecessarily specific. How about this instead: A half-orc arcane battlefield control specialist who gets into brawls regularly over the nature of his ancestry. Sometimes he wins, sometimes he losses. Both his parents where half-orcs and he doesn't appreciate any implication otherwise. He is quick tempered, foul-mouthed, and cunning. In combat he tries to control the battlefield more than directly damage his opponents. He has a penchant for cigars and gambling.
Hmm, wow! Color me impressed! I certainly have enjoyed reading this thread, as it has stirred the creative juices quite a bit. Could I interject with a challenge? Character concept: A half-orc divination specialist who gets into brawls regularly over the nature of his ancestry. Sometimes he wins, sometimes he losses. Both his parents where half-orcs and he doesn't appreciate any implication otherwise. He is quick tempered, foul-mouthed, and cunning. In combat he tries to control the battlefield more than directly damage his opponents. As far as familiar/arcane bond goes...I always have this vision of him with a falchion that was his fathers. Not really a requirement, but I am interested to see what you can come up with. And I also see him as trading in the traditional wizard's pipe for a cigar. Places the character concept challenge on the ALTAR OF AWESOME This is my humble offering and prayer to you, Oh Mighty Ashiel, Angel and Mistress of Practical Optimization! EDIT: Spelling....sometimes I think I am allergic to grammer and spelling! EDIT 2: Ack! Could I make one more suggestion/stipulation? The character tends to make side money and what not through Profession Gambler.

How about various evil outsiders? Of course, if those pesky Manticore Rights, and Ogre Rights..and...and..you get the idea... Anyway, if they are a problem, you could always hire a Bard to create a line of ambulatory office furniture a la Create Wonderous Items and Animate Object. Don Quiote means so much more if you see him riding a moving office chair into battle. Whatever you do...beware the coffee machine on watch duty...last time I sneak into a camp. Hot coffee burns the eyes!
Hello there! Is there any character that I have that you would be interested in? Here are some that I had made for some other games: Hiram Salatin - Paladin of Erastil, a concept that I applied for this game with. Sir Didymus: Cavalier of the Order of the Sword, and of course his trusty steed, Ambrocious Bubba Tyler, a half-orc fighter looking at going into eldritch knight, and his background could easily be adapted: I also have an idea or two about a cleric of erastil that I would really like to try out. 'Course, I love clerics in general...so I also have some interesting concepts for a clerics of Abadar and Pharasma...and a host of others....I make too many characters :-( Do any of these sound interesting? Or would fit in with the group and theme in your opinion? And before you say "play what you want", just know that I really really want to play them ALL, but I am not picky about what am playing at the moment...I have too many ideas that interest me. Let me know, Berwick
Just taking a stab at this mind you, but here goes... To the north, is a pleasant cove, with a sandy beach, and a jungle treeline extending around to a natural choke point in the rocks. I can see the waters of Desperation Bay in the distance. To the west, east, and south, I see a sandy beach that extends up to the tree line, that transitions slowly from wavering dunes, to some tall grasses or various lower-to-the-ground shrub/bush type plants, to smaller trees, on back to the larger jungle terrain surrounding the cove. The wreck of the Jenivere is North-by-Northwest from this position, jutting out of the surf and sand, inside the cove. This is what I get from looking at the map.
Sweet! Jonagher returns! Jonagher: You have had to keep your stash of booze locked up, after Aerys nearly attacked you one night. She really seemed needy about the booze, and there is nothing worse than a needy drunk. She seems troubled though. Also, Ishirou has joined you a few times in the rigging, sharing space with a kindred spirit in the love of the sea.
Ok, upon tallying the votes, we have come down to the following selections: Yuuwa Majid with Yuuwa Majid a Quadirian female NG Cleric of Gozreh seeking to make a name for herself and family, a crew-member aboard the Jenivere and F. Castor with Isandril Velahrna CG male elf fighter, crew-member aboard the Jenivere Thank you everyone for your excellent submissions and your consideration! Yuuwa, and Isnadril, please make any final tweaks, fixes, or changes to your characters, and we shall begin hopefully by Tuesday or Wednesday, though we might do something lite before then. Also, Here is the OOC discussion thread, please start using this one rather than the other OOC thread. Sincerely, Berwick

My wife just reminded me of what time that actually is here in Colorado...and boy howdy was that a dumb statement from me. I request a mulligan! We will go on the honor system, and stop all applications at 0000 GMT-8 which I believe is Pacific Standard Time. Thank you. That is all. Berwick
Okay, so far, here are the applicants. I first want to say thank you so much all of you for applying here. I am excited by all the possibilities, and it will be a hard time voting for sure! I will post just after 0000 Pacific Standard Time to confirm all eligible applicants. Notes:

I don't see any of these as being an issue. This AP has a built-in mechanism to assist with busy players, so if life interrupts, no worries! Also, welcome to the boards, though I am not any official welcoming party, and good luck!
Upon further review, here is what I am comfortable with sharing about character backgrounds. Bran - A serious man who seeks to make a better legacy for his family name within the Pathfinders. From Andoran. Origen - A sorcerer with a hidden past and a desire to find out what happened to him and his family. From Absalom. Jonagher - A rogue searching for answers to a riddle that his family has paid blood to protect. From Kyonin. Torden - A wandering merchant who wants to uncover great mysteries and discover great stories. From the Inner Sea region. Frik - A rowdy priest who is searching for his brother. From Absalom. If you want to know more than that, you would have to ask the individual players. I am a firm believer in player vs. character knowledge, and I don't want to reveal any secrets that aren't mine to give. Also, Barrdyn Klymeth, what does the Boarded in Mwangi Expanse trait do? And how is it described? [i.e. fluff, not crunch please] I am going to assume it is in the APG, which I do not have.
Wow! I am surprised by the quick response. Thank you so much for your interest! To answer a few questions: F. Castor F. Castor wrote wrote:
We are somewhat lite on healing and divine magics, but I would rather see people play what they want to, than to play something they are not excited about because it is "needed". Characters are going to die regardless of divine and/or healing magics present. <*wink*> Also:

I can do a more serious breakdown of the players in the group, give me some time, and I will post that later tonight. EDIT:
Also, please note that I am seriously looking for one or two people now, and WHEN Sully gets back, there will be seamless integration for Frik back into the group, if he chooses. It might cause the group to be a little big, but from everything I have seen...you may need it.
Hello there! We are going to be getting into the Serpent's Skull Adventure Path, and we need another player. You can read more about the group here. The expectation is that the player chosen will post at least once per weekday, with weekends being optional, along with communication if regular posting can not be done for whatever reason. We all have lives here, it would just be nice to know if you are not going to be available. Character Creation Rules:
Please post character concepts, and we will be voting on them starting Aug 13. Good luck, and I certainly hope to see you soon! Berwick
Not to be *that* guy, but here is a great article backing up the OP, and providing a counterpoint argument to DM_Blake: Please bear in mind that the original article is in 3.0/3.5 but the general concepts stay the same. Also you could go the other way around, and not allow skill focus for commoner's. skilled craftsman already have an npc class....expert.
This thread is full of AWESOME! I had a thought for you though...I have been reading here and there on the forums and one idea that is growing on me is having a player at the table track initiative. At first, I had a lot of arguments against it, but anything to allow the DM to focus on the important stuff more is good. Maybe have some track initiatives and combat pacing? Could also include the Overland Round Rules in this to give them something to do outside of combat. Hmm, I dunno what you would call it though...maybe something tacked onto the Chronicler?
'Allo there, I have noticed that you are down a player? or is it two? Just wondering if I could perhaps sit in as a "temp" until "Bandersnath" a.k.a. Gram Graynor gets back? I understand that you have not called for anyone, but fortune favors the bold, and I thought I would just ask and see what you said. Thank you, Berwick |
