1) Saw that mentioned and I'll remove it. I saw the Campaign trait but didn't understand that the second open trait wasn't OK. 2) Thanks for catching that. I totally missed it and will get it fixed today.I got my history on the CS. Should be good once I get these fixes on it. Thanks again! ![]()
![]() Very interesting. I'm not sure what part of my simple post indicated an attempt to assert authority. But, since it was implied I will state for the record: I have no authority in this game. The GM that is running this recruitment and will be running the game has the only authority! There. And I'm happy to see that we have many active posters for the game. Active posting usually means the game will be fun! Good luck all!!! @pinvendor ?? Your last post, previous to your reply to my post, was only 5 days prior. My second sentence, "Some haven't posted here in over a week...." obviously didn't apply to you. ?? ![]()
![]() Bertrand quickly reloads, picks another target and fires. He knows he won't get another unanswered shot but hopes that he can help Sigga. Trying to keep behind a tree, hiding from as many of the bandits as possible while targeting one climbing up to Sigga. Crossbow attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
![]()
![]() Sorry I was offline and missed the start of this.... Do we have any picture of the camp? It is hard to describe actions with no reference. I'm casting Mage Armor on myself before we move off. It lasts an hour so I'm not worried about it wearing off before the battle. Bertrand initially follows Halden to try and get a little closer to both towers. He watches for any bandits possibly set up as guards on the ground. Stopping once he is closer to both he watches for Sigga to start her climb, then casts his spell taking aim at the bandit in her tower. Not sure what was arranged as a signal... but unless I see Halden fire at the other tower I am targeting Sigga's guard as soon as my spell is completed. Crossbow: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (14) + 22 = 36 Minus whatever for distance]
![]()
![]() Bertrand shrugs. The plan might work if timed right. "We need to get closer without being detected, at least into a medium range for our bows. And give me time to cast my spell before you take your targets." "Of course the outlook falling from their post is likely to alert the camp, but the disruption and confusion might give us time to shoot a few more before they organize. If possible we should take out that woman with the axes. Cut the head off of the snake and maybe some of these bandits will surrender or run?" "If the attack goes south or the camp organizes too quickly and we need to run, where do we regroup? A few miles back down the river, or should we return to our previous camp?" Just thinking that we should designate a rally point in case we get split up. ![]()
![]() Bertrand watches and listens, wondering if these people seriously wanted to risk an attack on a camp out-numbered roughly two-to-one. "We can't attack the camp. We're out numbered badly and we don't know what we haven't seen yet. What if they have casters, trained dogs, or another half dozen men that haven't been seen yet?" "I think we should back away and set up an ambush. We wait for them to send a group out, hunters or perhaps to look for the group that isn't coming back from the trading post. Once they get in range we fire bows at them, take them down before they can get close enough to even hurt us." ![]()
![]() Bertrand dismounts and secures his horse to a tree. He readies his crossbow, just in case. "More information ever can't hurt, but if you're spotted have to try and slow down any that are chasing you." perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19 "You might also look for a safer path, one less visible to their watch?" ![]()
![]() Bertrand nods when Henrik prepares to depart. Quietly he replies, "And luck to you and Thunder. I'll pass your regards to the others when they wake." When his watch gets close to the end he packs his equipment away and gets ready to move again. "Henrik said to pass his regards to everyone, and we might see him again." Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16 Survival (aid): 1d20 ⇒ 16 Changing my spells. I'll update on my CS unless you are tracking somewhere else? ![]()
![]() Bertrand looks for a place to tie off his horse and remove the riding gear, then enters the camp. He is impressed by the camp and looks for a place to lay his bedroll down for comfort. "Thanks for letting us join you. This site is better than where we had stopped." Sense Motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18 Nope.... Possibly half-elf? But too tired to care. ![]()
![]() When Halden mentions another camp and getting his weapon ready Bertrand remembers that he had left his crossbow attached to the horse, and he hadn't taken the saddle off. His horse might be as tired and cramped as he was.... He moves over and gets the crossbow, loads it and sets it down. He starts to remove the saddle, then realizes that he may need it ready if they have to move quickly. He tightens the saddle again, then picks up the crossbow and waits/watches for Halden. ![]()
![]() Bertrand has trouble concentrating on anything but the infernal beast that he has been riding for the day. Previously he had thought that the wagon was an uncomfortable ride but now he wishes for such a plush ride.... As Halden is searching for a good campsite wonders what is wrong with any of the sites that they bypass. He dismounts and walks along with the horse. perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13 ![]()
![]() I vote for exploring on the way. We were told that the dogs aren't likely to make it back to camp and they won't be missing their crew for around a week. With that I don't think it's critical that we make it there fast, and we do need to do the work that we were 'chartered' to do. Besides, we may come across another bandit patrol if we delay, and that means less in camp. Once we find them we can scout the area and plan our attack, backing off to rest and recover if we have had any encounters during that day. Note: Need to be sure we have enough rations for that amount of time. I don't think we should also spend time hunting or scavenging for food. We have horses with saddlebags to carry the extra. ![]()
![]() Looks good. I marked the alchemist fire and one CLW potion as that I am carrying. Should I delete the line? However I think we did say to give the armor and weapons to Oleg, to sell and gain additional goodwill and perhaps a little bit of coin after he takes his 'commission'. ?? Does anyone that can use a bow want to keep one of the longbows? Not sure of specific rules but I've usually ruled (in games that I've GM'd) that equipment 'spoils' weren't worth purchase price. (used vs. new) Usually I set it at half, but sometimes rolled as a percentage based on how well the previous owner maintained it. Kobold/goblin weapons for example I usually list at 10-40% purchase value. (unless sold to kobolds/goblins) Minus a commission for someone selling the spoils, and equipment isn't any way to get rich fast. Only my 2 CP of course. ![]()
![]() Bertrand glances at the amulet when Lordar mentions magic. "Hadn't thought about magic, and I haven't prepared the cantrip to detect it. But it's unlikely that a lesser commander would be allowed something that valuable. He was wearing it so it can't be cursed." I'm ready to leave now and camp somewhere. I agree that we need to reduce their numbers somehow. If we find the camp and they are all there maybe we could wait and watch and if they send out another group we could ambush them. ?? Who is taking the potions? If I understand right there are 2 CLW and 1 Shield of Faith. They should be on the CS of whoever has them. If nobody disagrees I'll carry one of the CLW potions. ?? ![]()
![]() Bertrand doesn't really like the idea of trying to hunt for the bandit camp, leaving Oleg and Svet in danger, but he only has one vote. "Well, the bandit's dogs have run off. They're likely to run back home and that will warn the camp that their "tax party" ran into trouble. So I guess we should try to find the camp and see how many bandits we are facing. I just hope they don't try something sneaky like taking a round-about trail here so we don't see them. We arrive at the bandit camp while they are here.... Not a pretty picture! On the other hand, if we get lucky and spot the group coming here we can ambush them. Does anyone have good tracking skills? A group of amateurs like these with six horses should have left a pretty easy trail to follow." ![]()
![]() Bertrand shows the goods to everyone on the team. He has no use for any of the weapons or armor. "Maybe Oleg can get a decent price for them? After his commission we should get a few gold for what would otherwise be dead weight." At least one set of leather armor is destroyed, cut in half.... "The alchemist fire can be useful and I think we should keep it. I'll carry it unless someone else wants to?" And the 75 gold split 5 ways is 15 each. ?? Plus 2 days of trail rations each, and everyone gets a horse? There were 5, I assume with saddles, plus one extra with saddle bags and rope. Bertrand waits until the questions are asked and answered with the prisoner, then motions for the party to step away from others, including Oleg. "Remember our charter. We are here to scout out the lands. Clearing the bandits will be required, but I think we need to keep both objectives in sight. Besides, we can't leave Oleg and his wife unprotected. For now I say that the prisoner can be bound in one of the buildings and we can stay our nights here. During the day we ride out and explore the areas nearby. If Oleg and his wife were expecting a contingent of guards I say we wait for more distant exploration, and location of the bandit camp, to come once they've arrived and the prisoner is given over to them." ![]()
![]() "Thank you Lordar. My melee skills are sub par at best. I felt my ability with the crossbow was much more useful in that battle. Good point, Halden and I can search all of the bandits' equipment. It might provide a clue, and there might be something of use. The horses alone should be a great benefit for exploring the area." Searching the bodies and horses for anything and everything.... ![]()
![]() Bertrand steps up to Oleg and nods. "You are right of course, and we'll have to heal the man to turn him over to the guards when they arrive. Now that he's passed out it'll be much easier for Brother Belchfast to remove the arrow and bind his ankle. Setting bones while conscious is terribly painful. Would you happen to have proper materials to splint his leg or bind it so it cannot be moved?" ![]()
![]() Seeing Halden move out to recover the horse from the bandit (and the fallen bandit's body?) he moves to the prisoner. As the man pleads he glances around for Belchfast. "Brother Belchfast. Is he telling the truth about his wounds? If his ankle is broken then he's certainly not going anywhere." Using Diviner's Fortune on Belchfast to give him +1 to a heal check to assess the man's wounds. ![]()
![]() Bertrand quickly reloads his crossbow and takes aim at the man fleeing on horseback. The coward will alert the other bandits. Maybe he can stop him.... Unless the woods block him? crossbow shot: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15 Minus distance?
"Are any of them still living? We wanted a survivor to question." ![]()
![]() Bertrand feels the arrow pass through his magical armor and into his flesh. He ducks down to gain a little bit of cover from the debris that had been brought up while casting a spell. Casting True Strike ![]()
![]() Bertrand helps Oleg move anything needed to the wagon. Physical labor helps keep a person warm on a chilly morning. He gets up on the walkway to watch/listen before dawn. Once the sounds of the group approaching is heard he quietly casts Mage Armor on himself, then waits for Oleg's signal. If I understand the layout, the fire would be between the tables and blocked from my side of the gate by the guest house. I'll fire at one of the bandits in the merchant yard, which ever one is closest to the gate. Lordar should be in the guest house ready to charge out and save Oleg.... The other two in the stables. Cursing quietly Bertrand accepts that no plan ever survives past the first couple of seconds of actual combat. He rises with his crossbow and adds his yell to Halden's, "Die thieves!" Crossbow attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
![]()
![]() Lordar, I think we all need to be hidden. If not the bandits will be suspicious, and ready and might just attack. And you wouldn't be able to block all of them. They aren't going to attack Oleg if they think things are going right. They'll be 'extra cocky' if they just see Oleg, probably insulting him for hiding his wife, etc. Oleg can signal our attack by making an excuse and calling out to his wife. (Who of course will be safely in their home with the door barred) Sigga and Belchfast can charge out of the stables. Lordar can charge out from a different building if desired. Halden and I can rise up from hiding on the walkway by the gate and fire. If someone chases after Oleg, we target that individual over any others. If not, we try to identify the leader. Drop him/her and the others might just surrender. As for prisoners, if nobody surrenders, once they are all down we can check for any that are unconscious but not dead. Belchfast can stabilize them for questioning. I agree with Sigga. On either side of the gate looks good. How high is the walkway? Id it is 10' or more we don't really need cover to hide. Just be prone and ready to 'pop up'. ![]()
![]() Once they'd seen the area around the post, Bertrand moves up on the walkway to pick a spot with a good view of the wagon. "I want to be sure I have a good view of the targets...." Once he is satisfied he moves to the bunk house. "Probably should post guards on the walkway over night, just in case they decide to come during dark hours. Wake me for last watch so I can ready a different spell." Changing Color Spray for another True Strike. Unless things go really bad I'll be out of range for Color Spray! ![]()
![]() Bertrand smiles as he scans the area. "Haldran and I could take positions on the walk on either side of the gate. We'll stay low and hidden until the action starts, and we'll have high ground to fire down on the bandits. If the cart has several bags, barrels or whatever it'll look like a good haul. Again, make the bandits feel like things are going right according to plan. Lordar, Sigga and the Brother can be ready in the stables waiting for a signal. Oleg, pick a phrase that you could say that wouldn't alert them. Maybe you could call out as if you wanted something from your wife, in your house? That way they'd all glance toward the house and we could attack from our vantage points from surprise. Of course Svetlana will be hiding and safe, and remember Oleg that you need to get out of the way so none of those vermin get any ideas about grabbing you as a human shield." ![]()
![]() Bertrand listens quietly through the whole explanation. He can't keep his head from shaking, angry at the obnoxiousness of the bandits, just a different word for the bullies that he'd always struggled against. That these would threaten an unborn child just made it so much worse. These weren't men. They were animals that needed to be put down! "I'm sure that we all agree that there is no debt. We'll help. We'll stop the next group that comes, tomorrow or the next day. Then we'll see about tracking them back to their lair and finishing the group! Threatening a pregnant woman is an act that no non-rabid animal would consider. They should be treated as no less than that." He pauses a moment to consider how they should handle the bandits and hears Sigga's word. "Yes. We should set up an ambush against them. Svetlana should stay inside, safe, but you Oleg will need to greet them. Use whatever tone they'd expect, angry but submissive? It'll make them feel safe. Do you normally have stores out where they can see or do they enter your storage? If the latter a couple of us could be in the storage area waiting for them to enter. You would lead them in and we attack as they enter." "As the attack starts at the storage building the others of us step out from the other buildings and attack with missile, swords and magic. We'll likely drop a couple of them immediately and the others won't last but a few seconds after." Assuming that they wouldn't trust the couple and would enter the storage to search/select the treasures that they'll steal! ![]()
![]() Surprised by the lady's response, Bertrand listens to the exchange trying to figure out the issue. While he can't read minds a couple of things are obvious. Svetlana had thought that they were guards sent by the government and she was upset that the looked for help hadn't arrived. Oleg didn't like outsiders and was protective of his wife. Trying to figure out the right balance of truth and lie he decides that not mentioning the government while offering help might work.... "Well, we're not exactly just passing through, but we also aren't traders. But maybe we can help if you're needing it and can point us the right direction. We're adventurers and we were told there were some bandits around here causing trouble. Maybe you know where they might be? The driver on the way even mentioned something about a new leader that was organizing them. Gotta stop that or it wouldn't be remotely safe for anyone living in this area or even passing through." ![]()
![]() Bertrand considers the 'story' from the driver. Bandits were a nuisance that they'd been given free hand to get rid of. But if someone was trying to bring groups of bandits together? Kingdoms could be started by such if the leader was smart enough. He thanks him before shouldering his equipment and leaving the wagon. Walking down the path toward the trading post he studies the building. A defensible structure makes sense considering the area. The watchtowers would provide a good place to watch for dangerous enemies approaching and would be good for firing missiles down on them. It would only take a small garrison of men to hold against a large force of bandits. Of course as a trading post the doors would be open. The wide gateway and the open market area would provide for fairly large wagons bringing supplies in and taking them away, back to the kingdom. It was an excellent set up. He is surprised at the pregnancy of the lady greeting them. This is rather rough living for a woman in such condition, but he realizes it is their choice. He sets his gear aside and sits as directed, happy for such a greeting. Maybe this task wouldn't be as hard as he had thought? Then he hears her words. "Aid? Well, we weren't sent... But what aid would you need? I'm sure we can assist. Just let us know what you need." ![]()
![]() Slightly surprised by the words of the driver, Bertrand glances around at the others. "Untamable? No land is truly untamable. Land is just land and if there are bandits, monsters, or some truly unique things on it, that is all that needs to be tamed. I'm sure that with spell and sword we can handle anything this land throws at us." Hearing Sigga's question he adds "If not just bandits, perhaps you've some stories of something interesting in the area?" ![]()
![]() Hmm.... I've always played it as the character had to focus/unfocus their vision to 'see' an aura. So it might be noticed, or might not, and an inexperienced person probably wouldn't know what you were doing. They'd probably just think you were bored. (The 'glazed eyes' look!) Are you detecting evil or just thinking really deep thoughts? ![]()
![]() Alerted to other than reviewing the charter Bertrand roles that up and stows it in his pouch. Glancing at his traveling companions he realizes that he knows nothing about any of them, and likewise they about him. With his pure average human looks, brown hair, brown eyes, rough traveling clothing with simple weapons, he looks like a commoner that somehow convinced someone to be included on this trip. He'd possibly have trouble convincing a caravan master to hire him as a guard! Shifting in his seat he hopes that they will arrive shortly. He'd almost like to jump down and walk to stretch his muscles, but isn't sure that he could do it while moving without possibly falling and embarrassing himself. Besides, why walk when you could ride? Glancing around again he assesses the others:
Rather than rely on his assumptions Byron leans back and speaks out to the whole group. "If we're to work together we probably should know a little bit about each other. My name is Bertrand Strahnd, but call me whatever works easiest for you. Bert, mage, or 'hey you'.... But that last might get the attention of more than just me. I'm a mage. My specialty is divination but I've got a fair mix of other magics too. Like most magi I do my best to stay out of direct combat, but I don't mind getting my hands dirty with common labor. Where my magic works I prefer to use it. Where it doesn't, that won't mean that I turn away and wait for someone else." ![]()
![]() Yay! The board is back up, again.... Sorry Relic. Re-read your request and realized I didn't do as requested. Been playing D&D since 1977 but pretty new to this board. PBP on d20WorldOfGreyhawk.Yuku.com until it died/transitioned to Tap-A-Talk, then died again. (Post mortem still pending as the board is in use by a couple people. I post pictures there and link them to the Gauntlet game I'm running here.) I generally haunt the couple of threads where I do play so I should have no problem keeping up my end on this one. If something does happen and I have to be away for more than a few hours I will post details as I know them.
