Male Longtooth Shifter Ranger 1
Thanks for the fine rolling on my behalf, Rev, and my apologies for the unannounced absence...
Baldrech howls in pain as the sticky contents of the fire pot burn the skin on his neck and his wild mane. He tries to ignore the sting of his wound, keeping an eye out for signs of the duergar's passage -- flattened grass, bending branches, footprints, etc. The shifter maintains a defensive posture, both swords cutting at the air around him.
Perception check: d20 + 7 = 22. http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1698695/.
Successful save vs. ongoing fire damage: 18. http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1698712/.
If Baldrech has reason to believe that the duergar has entered one of his threatened squares, he will attack using Twin Strike... Attack 1: d20+6 = 16; damage = d8+3 = 4; Attack 2: d20+6 = 24; damage = d8+3 = 8. http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1698700/.

Baldrech whirls around furiously, slashing at the lizard with both of his swords, but again, the blades bounce harmlessly off the creatures thick hide.
Attack: d20 + 6 + 2 = 14; d20 + 6 + 2 = 15... Damage, if Anarak's mark brings the lizard's AC within reach: d8 + 3 = 9; d8 + 3 = 4 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1693874/). Note: I forgot to add the +2 flanking bonus on invisible castle, so I add it it here... not that it makes a difference, even with Anarak's mark.

Anarak wrote: Also fyi, I moved to H14 before Baldrech takes his action, so he might want to move to F14 instead of F13 in order to get flanking. Yes, F14 sounds good, didn't realize that Anarak would be breaking fee and he would have done so before I posted my action. I don't think this changes the outcome of my missed attacks, though... unless a 15 (first attack) would have been sufficient to hit the lizard?
Male Longtooth Shifter Ranger 1
Seeing the trouble that Anarak is in, Baldrech curses, drops his bow and advances towards the lizard. As he does so, he draws both his swords lashes out with them at the reptile. "Who am I to get between fighting lizards," he mutters beneath his breath.
Move action to F13, followed by use of Twin Strike at-will exploit. Attacks: d20 + 6 = 13 and d20+6 = 11; damage, if successful, is d8+3 = 6 and d8 + 3 = 7 http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1691925/.

Baldrech looses another arrow at kobold 6.
d20 + 5 = 15; damage: d8+3 = 9. http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1689343/.
Male Longtooth Shifter Ranger 1
As a result of last round's delayed action, in the next round I will act on 15, just before the kobold crew... correct? By the way, did Baldrech notice any markings/symbols on the stone?
Male Longtooth Shifter Ranger 1
Thanks for running Baldrech on my behalf, DM, you played him just as I would have.
Baldrech keeps keeps his sights trained on the nearest kobold as he knocks another arrow. He also takes a quick glance at the stone, trying to determine whether it bears the markings that might identify it as one of the stones the party is searching for (d20 + 7 = 21 http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1687603/).
"Drop your weapons and your miserable lives will be spared -- that was just a warning shot," growls the surly shifter. Baldrech readies another ranged attack against kobold #1 - if he should make a threatening move, either by using a ranged weapon or advancing toward the party, Baldrech will loose an arrow at his target. d20 + 6 = 14; damage: 1d8+3 = 8 http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1687607/.

After inspecting the trail for a half hour or so, Baldrech returns in mid-feast. He raises an eyebrow, surprised to find this kind of camaraderie developing between his companions and the fish people. He sniffs at the air, clearly suspicious of the food that has been laid out by the strange creatures. "Vel, Kia, have you learned much during the time was away? The trail goes up for a ways, but no one has travelled upon it recently... As a matter of fact, the only tracks I did notice seem to have been made by these fish folk... so it's safe to guess that they may know what we may stumble across inland... But what exactly are these fish folk, anyway?"
Male Longtooth Shifter Ranger 1
Realizing that the ritual and first encounter with the fish people could take some time, and that the strange beings pose no threat, the restless shifter decides to occupy himself with other tasks. "While you're busy making friends with the locals, I'll scout ahead up the trail..."

Rev DM wrote: I'm ruling that you will need to roll Diplomacy checks to see how well your sign-language works. Gobi and Kia have already done this. Please can Baldrech and Whiteclaw use a DC 15, Anarak a DC 18 and if you succeed, I will assume that you can communicate. Baldrech is content to let Vel, Gobi and Kia communicate with the fish creatures and relay whatever information they obtain to the rest of the party. He does not intend to communicate with them via sign language. Not meaning to be anti-social for the sake of being anti-social or non-cooperative... it's just the way I picture Baldrech reacting...
Male Longtooth Shifter Ranger 1
Baldrech feels uncomfortable with his role in the ritual -- perhaps with arcane magic itself? He watches the scene quietly, completely paralyzed...

Anarak wrote: 3. Baldrech should receive +5 hp since the two-weapon style ranger ability gives toughness as a bonus feat. This will also affect surge and bloodied values. :) Hmmm... I'll need to double check that. And if it's correct, then thanks for the catch!

"Anarak, back off. They're not hostile unless you make them that way. Back up and lower your weapon." There is a bit of a growl from the gnoll as she speaks, and some of the fur on the back of her neck stands up.
Whiteclaw certainly is your run of the mill gnoll, thinks Baldrech in wonder as his hyena-like companion urges pacifism, and that walking lizard is acting like a buffoon... how did Whiteclaw ever get entrusted to him?. The shifter keeps looking at the unfolding scene silently, with interest.
Male Longtooth Shifter Ranger 1
"Fish people?" mutters Baldrech to himself as he stands outside the wreck with weapons drawn. Clearly not inclined to trust these strange beings that he has yet to see with his own eyes, he takes a cautious step back, ready to pounce should the encounter result in violence.
Rosey, feel free to use one of the pre-rolled initiative rolls provided in my profile.

Seeing his companions rummaging around the longship, Baldrech grumbles to himself, draws both his longswords, and approaches the beached vessel, waiting to see what the others unearth and ready for the worst. "Stay put, Whiteclaw, this shouldn't take long..."
Male Longtooth Shifter Ranger 1
Baldrech takes Bifrost's scrawled note, looks at it briefly, then grunts his acknowlegement to the captain. He takes his place at an oar, and having little experience in small crafts at sea, does his best to follow the instructions given by his comrades.
Initiative: 7+3 = 10; Athletics check: 18 + 9 =2 27. http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1668416/.

As Gobi returns to the table, the dragonborn continues, "How should we proceed once we get to the island. Whiteclaw, Gobi, and I will make a fine battle unit, but," he adds, glancing at the imposing figure of the armored gnoll, "we might be a little lacking in the stealth department."
"There's something to be said for sticking together considering the reports we've heard." He looks from Kia to Baldrech, and says, "You two seem like the most likely candidates. Should we send someone to scout ahead, or is that too risky?"
Baldrech, who had been standing alone on deck during most of the discussion, enters the cabin as Anarak looks from Kia to him. One longsword hangs at his waist, another is sheathed on his back. The black-maned man gazes at his assembled comrades with a strange look that suggests a mixture of amusement and annoyance. "Fear not, lizard, for I have the stealth you're wanting... I'm fast, and I'll gladly scout ahead... ALONE..." He speaks in a a quiet voice, emphasizing only the last words as he eyes Kia defiantly.

Hmm. I wasn't sure about Baldrech. I haven't read the Monster Manual section on Shifters. Are they basically humans that have been bitten? Or an entirely different race?
If I read it correctly, shifters are to lycanthropes what tieflings are to fiends (i.e., someone a few branches up my family tree was a lycanthrope).

Baldrech stands by himself on deck, watching the last rays of sun fade beyond the horizon as the wind whips through his black mane. The somewhat ferral-looking man breathes the brine in deeply while losing himself in private thoughts. Hroaldr, what have you up your sleeve, you crazy old fool? And am I the greater fool for having accepted to come on this journey, with a crowd of strangers? And why was Whiteclaw entrusted to that walking lizard... have I given you cause to lose faith in me?"
Ah, reminds me of fond memories of ferry trips in Scotland and Scandinavia...

Hrolaldr told you all this
"The stones are large. Probably about eight feet high and heavy. As far as I know, they'll all in one place. They're sacred, so they'd probably be at the top of hill. Very likely in a grove of trees. You see why I need the tracings. They can't easily be moved. Even if they could be, I think it would be inadvisable."
Flashback to Baldrech's initial meeting with Hroaldr...
"Old friend, how long have you known that these stones are out there, and why need you these runes traced now? Why do no members of your order accompany us on the journey, if it is so important?"

Male Longtooth Shifter Ranger 1
I'm happy with the hooks, thanks.
How many days is this expedition supposed to be? I'll buy 5 or 10 days worth of rations, depending on anticipated length of the journey, I'll get myself some of that cider, and if no one has rope, I may take a coil of that as well.
My original gear purchase (see profile) included two sunrods... is that acceptable?
EDIT: my 10 invisible castle initiative rolls are up in my profile. Feel free to make additional rolls on my behalf, if necessary...
As for preferred play style. As long as there is significant interaction between the PCs (given the few NPCs), I should be okay. I'm not big on hack and slash gaming, and find that constant and drawn out battles can quickly become boring in a PbP. That having been said, like anyone, I do enjoy a good battle. I guess balance is the key (and I realize that whether "balance" has or has not been achieved will depend on each player's taste). Bottom line: it's a one shot. Do what you think feels right, and I'm sure that we can all manage to have fun and learn a thing or two about the new system...

Alright, I'm ready to go... Background has been posted... Can't say that I've had much time to read all the rules, but I'll figure those out as we play... Thanks again for your patience, everyone (was I the lone straggler?).
Male Longtooth Shifter Ranger 1
Hey Evil,
My stats are finally up... thanks for your patience!
Although I have some background/personality ideas, I haven't written any of them down yet. How are shifters perceived by the other races in the area? I initially would have liked for them to be rare and feared/mistrusted, but Karin's shifter-human population mix suggests that shifters are quite common and generally accepted by humans (if not other races)...
Anyway, I'll make adjustments once I get a bit more direction from you...

Arggghhh! I spent the better part of an hour entering my profile info, and lost it!!! It's nearly midnight now, so will try again tomorrow... sorry again for the delay (I knew I should have "copied" before submitting!!!)!
