Mud? Really? I can only imagine the size of dragon poop, and you choose to fling mud? Monkeys everywhere are shaking their heads in disgust.

Omg, remember that 4e video that featured dragon poop? Wow, it was then and there I knew 4e was a barren landscape of meh.

Ok. Here is a question.

I was standing in queue at a store (I know), and started talking about trying to grow food using Hydroponics. Well, this guy tells me to be careful because the equipment and lights generate a lot of heat, and law enforcement offices sometimes send out helicopters (black I assume) with heat detection equipment to specifically find houses that are TOO hot. He said this 'heat signal' is an indication of drugs being "created", so if I get into Hydroponics food production I should expect a visit from the police.

Has anyone heard of this before?

unusable statistics

*nods head* I was hoping there would be some cluster analysis, or at least something to pontificate trends around.

So, I was looking for world building material. And instead of drow and wizards I found CIA links. What interests me most about this list is the listing of all the countries along the side.

When Roland walked "the beam" between worlds, just how many countries did he encounter?

good point

Awlaki is the American-born cleric residing in Yemen who has been tied to the Fort Hood shooting last fall, the Christmas Day jet bombing attempt and the attempted Times Square car bombing in May.

Link

Since he is American born, does this mean he is an American citizen. If so, if he were arrested he would be Mirandized. That seems wrong.

Constitutional law experts say the movement is mostly symbolic because federal laws supersede those of the states.

Similar legislation is pending in 37 other states.

I wish I knew what the basis of their lawsuit is.

4. Salvage old Car Batterys and sell them for scrap - get new Rechargable Car Batteries for your Personal/household Power Supply.

Excellent list. I'll have to see how I can work this stuff in. #4 worries me however, I don't really want old car batteries around as they are toxic...

Living off the grid, huh? Well, I live in brooklyn, but there are a few ways...

1. Ditch cable. This is basic, but it's one big thing you can do. Despite the switch to digital tv, any old school dial can get at least channels FOX, PIX and some public access. Or ditch TV entirely and go for radio. Or learn how to play a musical instrument yourself. Or read the paper, although that also props up another industry.

2. Get a cell phone. Sorry, but you really do need one- just go with the same company as the one that manages the land lines in your area to minimize that particular footprint. Still, go retro and use one that you put money on via a card or a dial up service. If you want to go completely retro, just buy cards. With cash. Which brings us to...

3. No bank account. Horribly inconvient, but there are several check cashing places that result in a smaller paper trail if you use a different one each time. Just realize they will be taking a little bit out of your check when they cash it. Or you can request to be paid in cash, if possible.

4. No car. In Brooklyn, this is relatively easy. My preferred method is to go by bike, but there are always trains and buses. And if you need to get out of town, use the various no-questions-asked-cash-only bus lines in Manhattan that are primarily run by chinese folks.

5. Internet cafe only. Got this one from one of my favorite(and paranoid) RPG's, Hunter The Reckoning. Free e-mail accounts are a dime a dozen, and most internet cafes have better deals when it comes to service than they did a few years ago.

6. Rooftop garden/farm....

Excellent list of suggestions. I'm going to use these as appropriate.

I'm really want to learn about hydroponics, and green houses; it would be great to be able to survive without a grocery store. But I know very little about the subject at this moment.

Very cool. Thanks. I need to study this.

In one of those desert countries, the teleprompter-programmer would have been tortured to death for this gaf.

I think his name was john.

Bill Gates *had* $400 million in BP on 31 March, now he has more like $200 million in BP.

I wonder if Bill is mad?

His portfolio is most likely fully hedged. I'm sure he is fine, and probably didn't even notice it. I hear he has become a video game addict.

I need to read this.

I'm sorry, what were the alternatives on the table again?

Everything was just fine wasn't it?

Wasn't there a recent study done on children in another country, in which it was demonstrated young people tend to start out socialist, but as they got older they moved toward capitalism ?? (runs memory checks)

We may simply be seeing the idealized world view of a young person. After a few years working in the real world this will change.

Recently, I have been trying to track how federal tax dollars are spent.

I found this IRS tax site , but it rather statistically dense.

Anyone have a nice 'break down' of how our federal tax dollars are allocated??

There is a 1988 book by mathematician John Allen Paulos called "Innumeracy". And I think his discussion gives insight into gerrymandering.

Let me look it up. It may be one of his other works, so I'll search them all. He was a correspondent with ABC News, and has a rather extensive website of his work... somewhere.

I actually think this problem is well studied by Computer Scientists, and various poly-maths. The politicians could not do this by themselves. I don't think they have the mad-programming skillz.

I also think this is a very interesting problem, and, yes, it is basically a math problem.

I'm trying to collect techniques to live off the grid. I believe that because I live in a big city it will impossible to live 100% off the grid. But still I would like to do as much as possible to live with less dependence on big companies.

What is your favorite method?
