Arruk frowns, a pensive scowl rather than one of anger. "I agree with you, Goodman Wyatt. The road is the best approach. I am afraid to say that I know of the count and his holdings - quite well, I'm afraid, though we've not personally met. Our family lines intersect in some tangential ways. We have had similar interests as well, and he's a bit infamous in the academic community."

"He's an eccentric fellow. Caromarc was the former ruler of Vieland who abdicated his position when the Palatinates threw off the yoke of the aristocracy. Since his abdication, Count Caromarc has become reclusive and paranoid. Paranoid about his experiments and discoveries being stolen. It is rumored he's trapped parts of his castle to prevent theft, and constructed numerous guardian creatures to serve and protect him."

"Schloss Caromarc lies to the north and east of Lepidstadt, some 25 miles as the crow flies. Known as the Hanging House, Schloss Caromarc lies to the northeast of Dippelmere Swamp, and is actually several buildings built into the walls of a gorge above a waterfall. The lower parts of the house are - I've heard - as luxurious as one might find in any city. The further up the gorge one goes, the more treacherous and inhospitable the buildings become."

"A strange fellow, all in all, and one whispered about in both the hallowed halls of the academy and at our large and rather severe family gatherings, which I should add, the dear count has never attended."

Hope it is OK to add the count as a very, very distant relative to the Doctor. I figure with that nat 20 there would be a good reason for Karras to know him well!

Brogol's name hits the Doctor like a punch, and Karras blinks, and blinks again, the tea biscuit forgotten in his hand. Was the wizard serious? Did he really believe he could bring the boy back? I had assumed that Brogol's resurrection was idle chatter, nothing more.

Slowly, Karras lowers his head; the Doctor gazes absently at the biscuit in his hand. "Of course, Master Bookman. Do not rush your preparations. I shall be with you to the end then. Or the new beginning, as it may be."

The Doctor doffs his hat, and then keeps it in his hands, or lap, throughout the social call. When Daramid asks about their plans, a frown settles over the Doctor's countenance - a familiar enough sight, for those that knew him, for it meant that Karras was deep in thought.

"I do not know, Justice Daramid. I came here to seem my apprentice, Mr. Stockl, laid to rest, and then became embroiled into the case for Adam. Truthfully, we are assembling quite a large - and unusual - coterie, and as I have no home at this time to return to, I should like to assist Master Bookman in finding a place for his new employees. And I feel indebted to Mr. Stockl to solve the mystery that lead - indirectly - to his passing; the murder of our dear Professor Lorrimor."

Karras absently chews upon a tea biscuit. It was dry and sweet. The dry nature of the biscuit at least, the Doctor could relate to.

Doctor Arruk Karras would never say so, but he was extremely grateful to be called a friend. Thankfully, there was an angry crowd for the man to focus his discomfort upon.

Karras spins away from Adam, one hand on his pepperbox, and stares at the courtroom crowd. He backs up against the others and offers a short, gruff response while staring down the howling spectators. "Of course, Adam. We seek truth and justice - whatever that looks like in the end. Reason demands no less."

"Ugly indeed," Karras says, his voice low and carrying, like ice calving from a glacier. "I have been in this line of work - shining torchlight into the darkest corners of our society - for nearly two decades now, in both the classroom and the field. And yesterday was one of the darkest corners I have peered into in all those years. The creature Vorkstag was hardly human at all; a being a called a skin-stealer, which means what you may already be surmising, judges. It takes the skins of its victims, and can wear them. It kept a closet full of them, the skin cabinet that Goodman Wyatt mentions, and Vorkstag - or the skinstealer that wore his skin, for Vorkstag himself may once have been a victim - could change its appearance almost at will, including taking on more monstrous and foriegn guises. It was also a fearsome fighter and skilled in the alchemical arts. And, a Chemikal Works is of course a most useful enterprise for the dissolution of evidence, as it were. I can only guess how long the skin stealer preyed upon those in your community. But I suspect that most disappearances these last years could be tied to that damned creature and its accomplice, Grine."

It was not the Doctor's first time in a courtroom, though that was not to say that he particularly enjoyed the experience. The law - and all its attendant networks - were something, frankly, he had skirted around many times in the past. The wigs were distracting, the pomp and formality as dull as any high society ball. Still, they were a means to an end. Karras sat, face placid, head unadorned, hair hastily parted, hands folded in his lap. When Adivon asked his question, the Doctor simply said, "The scientific method, barrister."

The law contained fancy words, and codes, and of course people well versed in both, but Karras had always found the procedure to be as much about the style of the substance as much as the substance itself, despite what Ustalav's prestigious universities had to say. Karras paused and let silence fill a few beats, and then continued his thought, waving his hand in a slight flourish as he looked from magister to magister.

"The court has rules, yes? So does science. Intractable, sometimes inscrutable rules. The first and foremost is that a hypothesis will often lead to more questions, even after the hypothesis itself is largely settled. A theory can be as rock solid as this wooden bench -" the doctor wrapped his knuckles on the seat next to him "- and yet, it is still called a theory, is it not? We had, from my point of view, more than enough proof already to put to the pyre the prosecution's assertions that Adam was the culprit of so many past tragedies. But of course, that would not be enough for our justice system, even one as flawless as Ustalev's." Despite the doctor's even-handed tone, a hint of sarcasm shines through.

"We needed more than the absence of guilt. We needed to show absolution, and the only way to do this was to follow up on every lead, to pull on each string stretching from our hypothesis. Again, I should note, from my viewpoint a hypothesis already proven, that Adam was not the monster he has been painted to be by the prosecution and the prejudice of simple minds! We knew that Adam was innocent, but it raised the question of who was then not innocent. And so, we simply could not afford to ignore the glass vial, no matter how seemingly small a thread it seemed to be. It was still a thread that needed to pulled, for every solved hypothesis leads to more questions, so says science's immutable nature."

"It would have been unethical for us to not follow that thread, given that a life is at stake. And even worse, it would have made me a man unworthy of my title, barrister, a fraud in the eyes of my discipline, my truth, my mistress: science."

The Doctor casts a glance towards the paladin, to see just how discomfited Wyatt is with the idea. He had to admit there was a certain ingeniousness to Bookman's plan. In his experience, the types of townsfolk that would be prone to breaking into a courthouse to lynch a prisoner were exactly the types to be gripped in a fit of religious pique. Not that Karras would mention such a thing aloud, in the presence of a paladin.

"What do you think, Wyatt?" Karras growls, his pistol still trained on the leader. "I've dispersed four mobs, and never with as little violence as one small duel."

Karras nods, his face pinched, and turns the cylinder on his pepperbox. This time, rather than shooting it into the air, Karras levels the gun at the ringleader, the man with the hidden armor.

"Goodman Wyatt and Master Bookman have the long and short of it," the Doctor says, his voice even. "There will be justice for Adam, and justice for the Beast, who are not one and the same. And it will be done in court! A mob's justice is no justice at all; you will become like that which you loathe, if in nature rather than visage: monsters! Spare your souls and don't cross that threshhold. As one that long ago did just that, there is no going back, and Pharasma will judge you damned. Go home, find the good in your hearts, in your hearths, and return in the morning, as visitors to the court, to see justice done. Go!"

The Doctor swears under his breath (being in the presence of a lady and all), and turns from the window. "Your logic is sound, Barrister. The only question I have is what Grine's role in this whole affair is? Stay here, we shall quiet the mob, one way or another."

Sadly, Ustalev was a land of superstition, and its people were quite capable - and often were - gripped by mania. This was not the Doctor's first - nor likely last - encounter with a mob. Individually, the potters, and farmers, and weavers that made up the crowd outside would be harmless. But, roused to anger, there was a dark energy that crackled through a mob, and those that fell into it were capable of dark things, darker than the imagined.

Affixing his hat squarely to his head, Karras loaded his pepperbox and stepped outside. The Doctor raised the pistol into the air, and fired it once, letting the flash and crack of the weapon bring a moment of silence to the crowd.

"Why are you here? Think about what you are doing, women and men of Lepidstadt! Think about the precipice you stand on! There is time to turn back, do not give into your darker natures! Do not do something you will regret!"

Assuming it is OK to read the spoiler and nothing horrible happens:
Karras frowns, "Odd. He looks freshly deceased, his body is cold to the touch. Perhaps the corpse is ensorceled? Can anyone check for residual arcana?"

It was a distasteful act, but a necessary one, in this instance to desecrate the body of the dead. The doctor began rummaging, first through the man's clothing, and then through his hair, his mouth, and along the corpse.

My spouse has recovered, I'm digging through work, hope to be back very soon!

Van still in Utah. Poor van! Yeah, R0B0, they are certainly unreliable. But I love Ron so much. He's got a pop-up tent, a trucker fridge, a sink and burner. He's a lot of fun, when he works.

Aduard, we were very lucky that Ron broke down in a decently-sized city. There's a lot of nothing in the American west. A little east of St. George is a stretch of land where there's nothing. Just miles upon miles, about 120 in total, of canyons, mountains, and mesas. No towns, little in teh way of people (though the highways are used). No internet, there's some vistas that you can rest/eat at that have outhouses - that's about it for infrastructure. Summers are 100F and winters are cold. It is stunningly beautiful but certainly not a place to break down!

Life still giving me a kicking at the moment. The mechanics in St. George, Utah, couldn't figure out the issue with our van. We're having Ron Burgundy (our van) towed to Las Vegas where there's a VW specialist.

We rented a car to get back to San Diego, which lost an under-car plate, causing us to get further waylaid, this time in the CA desert <cry/laugh emoji>. Hertz (don't rent a car from them!) was not helpful and presented us with one option (take a cab from a nearby town to Las Vegas to get another car) - the nearest town we broke down by didn't have a cab company that was willing to do this. We had a tow truck totally remove the plate, threw it in the back of the car, and continued on. Now we're fighting with Hertz about billing.

And now my spouse has Covid, so I'm currently on childcare duty while she quarantines and my work piles up (more). We've paid for this vacation, y'all!

"Very well," Karras says, pulling absently at his beared, his voice cracking with weariness. "Let's go to the tower before all of my magic wears off."

"Well, we shall need to purchase some cold iron then," Karras muses, staring into the dresser of horrors. "Surely there is a cart here, or something similar that the Chymikal works uses for deliveries. Perhaps, if we can find one, we can load up the dresser and Vorkstag and take them to court, stopping for some tincture of cold iron on the way? If nothing else, it will make a dramatic scene at the trial, and perhaps throw enough confusion into the mix that the magistrates will not be able to assume guilt."

Karras blinks, a grim smile barely registering on his lips. "A fey... Well done, Ms. Vyrelian, Masters Bookman and Wyatt. It makes sense."

There was nothing else to do but look. Slowly, methodically, the Doctor begins to pull the skinsuits from the wardrobe, looking them over for relevance to the tales they'd heard these last few days.

The Doctor's face reveals little discomfort with this task; this was evidence-gathering after all, and important if unpleasant work. Slowly, methodically, Karras works his way through the wardrobe, taking copious notes as he does so.

"Perhaps," the Doctor says, his voice soft, almost contemplative, if low and slurred in his goblinoid guise, "there is a Beast? Not Adam, of course, but another, or more than one another, all created by the madmen here? We know they have a facility for golemcraft, with the demon-dog out front. And the descriptions of the Beast don't match, exactly at least, Adam's own appearance..."

"As to motive, I am at a loss. Vorkstag and Grine are obviously contemptable, and probably corrupted individuals."

"Indeed," the Doctor mumbled (rumbled?) leaning in close, taking in the smell of death. "Ms. Vyrelian, can you see if there are magical auras here too?" Karras would take on the physical inspection. Hovering close, he looks over every inch, paying close attention to any locking mechanisms (if any), and now not worried that there are any living beings waiting to ambush them, takes his time.

Will take 20 if possible, if not...

"Agreed, Master Bookman," the Doctor growls, voice low and slurred. "They may very well have been involved. Let's not let up until we know there's no more villains lurking in this factory."

Like Esta, Karras longed to spend more time in the study. And would hopefully soon. The Doctor lopes to the door in the north wall, and after a cursory examination, turns the knob.

Doc can help with hiring the mongrels, Aduard. Regarding rolling, I was just wondering if we need to roll dice to id everything, since it is labled on the loot sheet. I can't recall if we're taking that step or not. I've found some GMs forgo it.

"Agreed, Master Bookman. Let's look through the Works first, and then get them back to town for arrest. Miss Vyrelian, I think I am fine for the moment, thank you."

"Tacitus, have you been in other parts of the Chymikal Works? What can we expect to find? Any more guardians like the one out front?"

"Aye, I'm fine, Master Wyatt," the Doctor mumbles, slowly making his way down to the floor. In his younger days, Karras would have practically bounded down the steps. But now? It was best move to slower when possible, so that one could move could move quicker when needed.

Grimacing, Karras stoops and pulls Vorkstag's formula book to the light, wiping some blood from it and sliding it into his pocket. "You're a more merciful man than I, Wyatt. Neither of these two deserve another breath.

Turning his attention to Aduard, the Doctor scratches absently at his cheek. [b]"Aye. Give them here, I'll get my kit out and test them. And then let's look through this foulsome place."

Are we identifying everything? Since they are on the loot list I'm not sure.

Sorry you got Covid, GM, but I'm glad it was mild. Hope you're totally mended soon!

I'm hopeful that the AoO hits, but if not... Doc would like to jump and try and land on Vorkstag sending them both to the ground (and hopefully inflicting some bludgeoning damage and falling damage on V in the process). Not sure how to adjudicate that. Acrobatics check? Touch attack?

Doc is 30' from the floor if I understand correctly?
