Liberty's Edge

I don't know if this belongs here or the off topic. Please move if it needs to be.

What kind of evil, vile and mean things have you done to your players? Anyone ever put the "head of vecna" in a game? Perhaps the "magic box" as from the Oglaf webcomic (warning that is NSFW if you are googling it now).

I had in game once a half green dragon rust monster. It took out the fighter's armor and left with with his skivvies, bastard sword and a shield. He found later on in the caverns of the adventure we were on a set of armor. He ignored the runes and the spikes...even the somewhat demonic head. Each day it leeched from him a small amount of XP and/or HP but granted him cool powers. The real deal was this was a demon that was skinned alive and made into armor by some evil warlock. When it became strong enough it became a "awakened half fiendish animated object" and attacked the party.

Not as cool as some of the stuff I have heard about...but still not bad for a low to middle level game.

I am thinking of adding to my campaign setting a feat that allows a character to do more then what is outlined in the Heal skill. It would allow the character to have had access to training in surgery and long-term care on patients. They would be able to perform surgical operations on patients, ability required for removing tumors, reattaching recently severed limbs or stitching up grievous wounds too great for first-aid to truly handle. If the character comes from a culture that magic isn't taboo...such as most of the parts of the current campaign then it also includes the ability to implant magic devices within the body. The last is huge rarity even among the more magically adept cultures such as the Elves and the foreigners form across the ocean. In both cases it usually is a limb made of wood or metal that is a replacement for a lost one from the Great War.

Is this going to far? I was going to model it from similar feats found in such books as Fadins Suns d20 or Dragonstar? My goal is to make it so that someone with the feat and Heal skill can stabalize someone better as well as have the recover faster. For surgery I may have to up the DC's for things higher then what I see in the various publications. While it is true that the ancient Hellenics and Romans could set bones, stitch organs, remove surface level tumors, and even use needles to remove cataracts I don't know how easy it was. From what I have seen the scene from the HBO series Rome, in which the character of Titus Pullo is injured and unconcious while having a metal plate put in his head was uncommon, but common enough that people did it regularly.

Anyhow...what do you all think? Should I add a "Trained Physician" or "Mundane Doctor" kind of feat?

Liberty's Edge

I was thinking of going all spidery on my players. I was going to have them encounter some ettercaps with a big, old ettercap "queen" that is the head of the group. I was thinking of giving it classed levels. One idea was to make it a little sickly (lower the STR and CON) and put the points into INT and CHA and making it a Sorcerer perhaps or a Druid. I was also thinking perhaps Oracle or Witch, just to play test the final test version here in my campaign.

I was wondering if anyone has done this? If so would you be willing to share your stat block on such a beastie? If you haven't and you are a good stat block crafter please feel free to show off what you come up with.

I have to be careful about what I toss at them. Mind you it is a much bigger party then what normal encounters have been designed for. I take that into consideration when coming up with the CR for an ecounter and so far the just stomp all over what I toss at them.

The party is about 6 (possibly 7) players, perhaps 1 or 2 NPC's that will be along for the ride. Players are 4th level on the average with the NPC's being 2nd level.

We have a "fire and brimestone" preacher cleric in the group. The player is wondering what skill would be used to harangue the faithful into confessing their sins before others. Something where he would extract a confession from on of the faithful.

I am really digging some of the recent materials out there about ancient Greece. I for example love the fluff for Mazes & Minotaurs.

My players want to travel to travel to my campaign setting's part of the world that is based on mythological, ancient generic Mediterranean in the same vein that Legend of 5 Rings or Oriental Adventures is generic fantasy Asia.

What materials can any of you suggest for this? Also what races would you all say would be appropriate? Would any of the PFRPG races be appropriate for such a setting? Would any of the player races in the Bestiary be useable?

What no love for old school magic items?

I am about to run a game...Sunday in fact. The character are going to escort a noble coming off a riverboat from the docks to his villa, when a fight between two groups. One of dock workers the other of caravan guards, around 50-80 people on each side. If the PC's wait it out they can get out of it, if they decide to meddle they may get some "mob justice" dealt to them. No matter what they do, a few of the dockworkers break off and face the PC's thinking they started this.

How would you structure this encounter? It's a group of six (6) 3rd level characters. Would you have "Dockworker Mob" (1st level Commoners with the "mob template" from DMG II) and a "Caravan Guard Mob" (1st level Warriors with the "mob template" from DMG II) fighting each other, ignoring the characters unless they meddle? Have the "toughs" that break off be 1st or 2nd level Warriors?

Has anyone seen anything about True Blood as a WoD campaign? I tried over at White Wolf boards and found little. I was wondering if anyone here watches that show and has info or observations on what they think of it.

I don't know about the rest of you but sometimes I watch that TV show and think "yeah he is using Dominate", "he has Resources of ***" or "yep he is a GMNPC".

Liberty's Edge

I have been fiddling with my campaign setting a bit lately and have decided to come up with a document that has descriptions of the regions found in the campaign world. The area they play in isn't the ENTIRE planet, more like a country.

Anyhow each region I went with the approach of "these" races are commonly found and "these" races are rare and "this" race is the freakshow race but found here. For example:

Blackshire is a providence in the Principality that is characterized by hilly forested country that turns into alpine mountains. The duke is totalitarian in his rule and a bit more racist then other dukes in regards to human supremacy. You find humans and halflings in the area. The halflings are more like the sterotypical shire hobbits rather then the swift, athletic gypsies of 3E and 4E. You also find dwarves from a city-state in the region that has good relations with the duke of Blackshire due to effort of the church and ongoing trade agreements. The dwarves are considered "rare". Lastly there are Goliaths...yes...as in Races of Stone character race type Goliaths. They were given some land and encouraged to use it by the duke in order to keep an eye on them better and to "humaize" and civlize them more. The Goliath is the "freak show" race.

I am trying to do this for a region I really don't have a really clear vision for. It is a large flat grassland or plains that has been used for farming...kinda like Nebraska or Iowa. Little thorps dot it all over and the capital of the Principality is there near the rocky coast. Also the Holy See of the church is there making it a spirtual capital as well. I figured of course humans should be found here. Nomadic halflings feel right too. I am at a loss for "rare" or "freakshow" races.

So ideas? More information needed? Creative input is appreciated.

I was thinking of retconning something in my homebrew campaign setting. In the setting people from one country left to the new world and met natives. The situation is very similar to early American history. I modeled most of the realations between the settlers and the natives off of this.

Now also they "Church" promotes humanity to the point that is is NOT a sin to kill a "unhuman"...which is basically things that can't pass for humans and are considered unclean and tainted, such as Goblins, Orcs and Ogres.

Elves, Dwarves and the like fall into the "demi-human" and per "Church doctrine" have a soul...but not a human one and doesn't go to the same heaven as humans. They are unclean, but not tainted.

The native human "barbarian" population that the settlers came in contact with I have not fleshed out. In fact I only speak of them but so far have never shown them. I thinking about swapping them out with Shifters after seeing the picture and description of them in the 4E PHB. That got me to reading about them in Races of Eberron and other 3E material.

What do you all think? Could shifters make a good subsitute for a "barbarian" culture?

Liberty's Edge

I am looking for player character races that are plant based/fey based in some way. I am looking for a race to fill the role of "guardian of the forest" or "first race of the forest" or some other "foresty" role. So far what I was able to find was

Volodni: Unapporachable East, pg 15. Plant race. I love the background info. Kind of reminds me of a plant based tiefling/aasimar/genasi. I just don't like the ECL.

Killoren: Races of the Wild, pg 102. Fey race. Not a big fan of them but I do like how they have no ECL. The cold iron anathama is a nice flaw as well.

Do you all know any other races that fit the bill? No elves please.

Since my previous Pimp My Campaign Threads yeilded gold...I was wondering if it would work again.

I am using the concept of regions in the sense that Forgotten Realms did. Each region has certain races and ethnic groups that you find. Each region gives instead of a variable list of bonus feats I am ruling it gives a flat bonus of some kind. I have a few regions done...I was wondering if you all could help me figure out what races I would find. If there is an interest someone give me a hell yeah, a thumbs up or something and I will present what I have worked out so far.

Liberty's Edge

I was wondering if there are alternate Warlocks in 3.5 version? I do like how in 4E there is the Infernal Pact, Star Pact and Fey Pact versions. Is there something like that in 3.5?

Liberty's Edge

I am playing around with the idea of using some of the good bits of 4E D&D...yes there is some...mind you *SOME* for my 3.5E. Mind you I am loving the Pathfinder RPG. They really moved the game into new realms that I feel improved the game. What I am talking about are things like roles. Instead of classifying it like old school 1E and 2E with Warrior, Wizard, Priest and Thief or Adventurer, Arcane, Divine and Warrior I was thinking of by "power source" and/or "role" like in 4E. Here is a sample of what I got so far. Some are obviously done already....oh...BTW...no BARD, PALADIN or RANGER in my game...they are prestige classes. I am using the option from Unearthed Arcana for the prestige class version of those. Some classes I have no experiance in my game, I have only read them. I use normally in my game all the core classes, except the ones outlined plus we have had a Favored Soul (started as a Fighter and multiclassed into it) and Scout (started as a Druid and multiclassed into it)

Take a look at the list below and tell me what you all think.

BY NAME: Barbarian, Cleric, Druid, Favored Soul, Fighter, Hexblade,
Marshal, Monk, Rogue, Scout, Sorcerer, Spellthief, Swashbuckler, Warlock,Warmage,Wizard

Controlers: Druid, Favored Soul, Wizard
Defenders: Fighter, Hexblade, Monk, Warmage
Leaders: Cleric, Marshal, Sorcerer
Strikers: Barbarian, Rogue, Scout, Spellthief,Swashbuckler,Warlock

Arcane: Hexblade, Sorcerer, Spellthief, Warlock, Warmage, Wizard
Divine: Cleric, Favored Soul, Monk
Martial: Fighter, Marshal, Rogue, Swashbuckler
Primal: Barbarian, Druid, Scout

Played Cyberpunk 2020 (or any version) and said to yourself "hmm...I wonder if I could adapt the Lifepath table to my D&D game?" If you wondered this and have done this I'd like to hear about it. I dug up some of my old CP2020 stuff and got all nolstagic over it and asked myself that question.

I have a campaign world I been using for sometime. Just as my tastes have changed so has the world. I been influenced by many things. In recent times I have read many of the materials for Fading Suns and Warhammer 40K. Those got me thinking about race relations. I have always though of how the races act in the default setting as kinda silly. Elves are always bad a$$, angelic beings that are better then everyone and sneer at lesser races. Halflings and humans get along and so on.

In reality...I think there would be out and out bigotry. I like how they handle it in Fading Suns. In my game I have introduced it a bit...but it still feels like generic fantasy. I am trying to get the feeling you get in Fading Suns...maybe even as extreme as in Warhammer 40k.

This brings me to the issue that I am wondering about. Am I using the wrong races? Are they too familiar. I tried to tweak them to make them odd. LIke a peanutbutter and cream cheese sandwich. You know what peanutbutter. You know cream cheese. But together...thats different. The one I am wondering about is the two "small races". Why two of them? Why halflings and gnomes? Is including them and the rest of the core races making things to familiar...even if the races are not exactly the same? Should I use other races?

Anyways if this is of an interest...please let me know. Post a "hell yeah" and I will go into detail about what I changed to make things different, then tell me if it is different enough.

I am looking for gamers in the NoVa area as well as from surrounding areas. I recently had a schedule change and now have off Tuesday and Wednesdays off and looking to game from about 10 in the afternoon to around 3 when my kids get off from school.

I need players for a AD&D 3.5 game, set in a homebrew setting. We are more into story and plot development rather then kicking in doors, killing goblins and stealing loot...then asking "hey why are we down here again"?

If you are interested please PM me or email me at Aries dot Omega at gmail dot com.
