I really want to know what people think about a practice I have heard of.

I buy games, a lot of games. I want to support games I like, so I buy them. But I hate DRM, additional subprograms and CD requirements.

What do you think of using cracked or "illegitimate" versions of games when you have a fully paid official copy that sits on your self?

So... does anyone know of a vancian version (or conversion) of the psionic system?

Do you think there would be an issue with wizards having access to healing? Or druid spells?

Anyone else have an issue with a kingdom building Blackmarkets?

Would the building of them not give them some sort of official status and thus not be blackmarkets?

Not to mention that blackmarkets don't exist like a fleamarket does (they are less of a physical location and more of a network of people circumventing the law).

So its summer and the ass hats on their bikes are out again.

Every time I encounter a stupidly loud bike its always a Harley Davidson. Never anything else. Why? Who the f knows, but it seems that all the asses like Harleys.

I got to say I'm glad that we don't carry around weapons otherwise I might have killed a few people on the street by now. I mean it; my first reaction is often to look for something (like a spear) I can throw at them.

In summary:
Harley Owner does not mean A hole. Though a biker rider who is an A hole is almost always on a Harley.

Is this what other people encounter?

Oh and Ive heard the 'safety' argument before and that's complete BS as the noise is projected behind you not ahead of you.

Any thoughts?

Everyone has probably encountered the scenario in a game where an important figure is assassinated.
Often the assassin leaves town immediately after the job so the question is did you go after the assassin or stay and try to go after the people who hired him?
Who did you try and bring to justice, how did it turn out and why did you/your character make that choice?

I've been thinking about Skills and now I'm wondering if I've solved some of the problem.

I've done a lot of looking at the issues of the 3.X system since 4E was announced and skill's issues seem to generally fall into four categories:

1) too few skill points for each class to do anything but get good at a few base class skills
2) character's skill abilities become more and more disparate every level (Example: that you must blow all your points in spot or never see the enemy rogue or vice-versa)
3) Cross class skills are too expensive so no one takes them
4) some skills don't work or work too well (not being addressed here)

Lots of methods have bee made for issue one and three.
My personal solution is to give every class +2 skill points every level and keep the skill rank cap as is but allow cross class and class skills to be bought at the same rate.

Then I was thinking about issue #2. We don't want to stop characters from having better or worse skills but just lessen the gap between different character's skills. I was thinking that if skills become more expensive to improve then it starts solving itself but allows a specialist to be still really good.

Skill ranks 1-10; 1 skill point = 1 rank
Skill ranks 11-20; 2 skill point = 1 rank
Skill ranks 21-30; 3 skill point = 1 rank
Skill ranks 31-40; 4 skill point = 1 rank
etc.

I would convert the max rank to max skill points and go from there.

What do you think?

Why must monsters advance in size when gaining HD (to become more deadly, stronger and have more hit points) when Intelligent races, namely PCs, don't?

Just thought people might like to know as it was a fairly fun stealth game.

R.I.P. Dungeons & Dragons Co-Creator Dave Arneson, 1947-2009

For the second time in just over a year, the dice are silent in the gaming world. News has reached us that Dave Arneson, co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons, passed away last night at the age of 61.

While not as famous as Gary Gygax, who passed away in March of last year, Arneson was a driving force behind D&D's creation and his contribution to the world of adventure gaming should not be underestimated. It was Arneson's spark that transformed Gygax's game Chainmail into the first edition of D&D, and begat everything that followed.
Arneson had to fight to get credit for his contributions, filing multiple lawsuits (later resolved out-of-court) against Gygax over crediting and royalties. He nonetheless did return to TSR in the mid-'80s to work with Gygax again. Following that, he began a second career as an educator, working in several schools with a particular focus on how to use gaming as an instructional tool.

Arneson suffered a stroke in 2002 and was soon after diagnosed with cancer. He finally lost his battle with cancer last night, surrounded by his family, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Gamers everywhere owe him a certain debt of gratitude for his work. He will be sorely missed.

I did. I had a mature adult red throw a large spear hidden in its hoard at the paladin when he thought he was safely out of the Dragon's immediate range.

Spoiler:

Copied from DM kill page:
While travelling to the Dwarven run City of Xonar the party notices a large red dragon high overhead flying towards the mountains. They decide to travel towards the nearest city and find out more. They discovered the tale of Flametear the Horrible (suggested to be very tough and out of their league).

They bought supplies and made a tough trip over the mountains (during mid winter to boot). They got to the volcanic area it was said that Flametear dwelt in after over a month of travel. After days of searching they found three likely caves. They then discussed how they would try and beat the dragon (a little late on the planning, I thought). They explored the crevices (with some poison gas and lava problems). The PC's reasoned that with some subterfuge they could 'get the drop' on the dragon and be able to gain the upper hand.

The dragon minced them. You should have seen the surprise on the player's face when the mature adult red dragon chose to throw a large spear across the cavern to nail the paladin. The dragon then quickly moved in, breathed and the laid a whooping all around and subdued everyone in just a few rounds.

Ever have a player ask you how much meat they can harvest from an animal they killed?

Good general guideline: 1/2 the animal's total weight.

1200 lb bull = 600 lbs of meat.

For a more detailed look (and where I made that generalization from) see this link.

All right, so you have had some time to play the game now.

If you can spare the time, I would like to hear a critique of Rituals. Please tell me the positives and negatives from both a GM's and Player's point off view.

Inspired by Why Are People Reluctant To Play Clerics thread. (That and players.)

I have noticed a trend in my years of GMing and playing.

PCs usually range from unsavory to down right evil.

Is this because of a lack of understanding?
Is this because of desire to be "badass"?
Is this so they can play the popular anti-hero?
Is this because of villains are thought to have more fun?
Is this because it's easier?

In ending, why can't people play a whole group of f-ing good characters for once?

As per above:

For starter paladin codes have been discussed before:

Paladin's Code
The paladin's code (this is a long one)
Update the Paladin Code
Paladin Code or "How to negotiate with evil creatures and not to die triying it"
A Paladin and his Code

Most of those are archived and if anyone posts on them please update the links.

So... now to the meat of the issue.

I have made a updated oath/code/guidelines. Discuss, steal or whatever it is you do.

Spoiler:

The Paladin’s Oath
“My faith is the well from which I draw my strength.
I defend those who are unable to defend themselves.
Ever vigilant I protect the meek, the poor and the humble.
I offer redemption to the wicked. Souls which have strayed and are wicked need guidance. Even the wicked may one day walk in the light.
I am humble, for pride turns man against God.
I am the faithful servant of God.
I shall never draw my sword for greed or hate but to defend life.
I am the righteous hand of justice.”

Code of Conduct
A paladin must be of lawful good alignment and loses all class abilities if she ever willingly commits an evil act.
Additionally, a paladin’s code requires that she respect legitimate authority, act with honour (not lying, not cheating, not using poison, and so forth), help those in need (provided they do not use the help for evil or chaotic ends), and punish those who harm or threaten innocents.

Associates
While she may adventure with others, a paladin will never knowingly associate with evil, nor will she continue an association with someone who consistently offends her moral code. A paladin may accept only henchmen, followers, or cohorts who match her moral and social outlook.

A Paladin’s Guide:

1. Strive for honour and goodness above all else.
2. A paladin must never compromise with evil, even to serve a greater good.
3. The easy way is the road to damnation.
4. A paladin must act with humility. A paladin's powers are an ally, never a tool.
5. Pity the sinner, suffer the prisoner and spare the defeated.
6. Lead by example, never the tip of a sword.

A Paladin supports and defends Good and opposes Evil.

It is only when a paladin, in their right mind, commits an evil act that they are barred from regaining their former status. An unlawful act may be allowed to be atoned.

A Paladin is a Leader in righteous combat.

When it is necessary to fight, the Paladin will seek to guide and inspire his comrades, taking a forward position in the battle and facing the foe boldly.

A Paladin is a Protector.

He will seek to prevent harm to the innocent and if need be he will place himself at risk in order to accomplish this.

A Paladin works to promote and enforce Justice and the Law.

If a Paladin does not agree with a law, he must still respect it and should work to change it rather than disregarding it. The only exception to this is if the law is truly evil. In this instance, the Paladin must follow the dictates of his god and his conscience.

A paladin cannot execute a wanted man without first having some reasonable proof that he deserves the punishment.

A paladin must, where possible, obey the law. This means that if the paladin sees five ways to complete a good task, four daunting and within the law, one simple but outside it, the paladin must with at least some degree of dedication attempt every one of those four difficult paths they are able first, before attempting the final route.

A Paladin is Honest.

He will not lie or otherwise seek to deceive a person. A Paladin does not cheat or seek to take unfair advantage in his dealings with others.

A Paladin is Loyal.

He does not betray his god, his liege-lord, his guild, his family, or his friends.

A Paladin is Holy.

He seeks to do that which pleases his god in all manners of the Code, and knows that the purity of his soul has a profound impact on the abilities the gods bless him with.

It is not appropriate for a Paladin to work toward the ends of a dark aspect of the gods as they are not in keeping with what is Good and Just.

Stupidity and ignorance is not unforgivable, carelessness is. A paladin should attempt to right any wrongs they unintentionally commit if they find out about them. Failure to do so could result in the permanent loss of powers.

Paladins are the souls of honour; they should act that way at all times.

Priority List

To be used when there is a conflict between the paladin's codes.

Lawful Good God:
1. the god’s rules/laws
2. the good of society
3. the laws of society
4. the good of the individual

Neutral Good God:
1. the god’s rules/laws
2. the good of society
3. the good of the individual
4. the laws of society

Lawful Neutral God:
1. the god’s rules/laws
2. the laws of society
3. the good of society
4. the good of the individual

A: Yes.

A: No. That information is still considered confidential and may not be discussed, shared, or distributed in any way.

Q: Now that 4th Edition is on sale, is my NDA void?
A: Absolutely not. Your Non-Disclosure Agreement with Wizards of the Coast still obligates you to "keep strictly confidential all Confidential information" in your possession.

Q: But how is 4th Edition still considered confidential?
A: Once a product is published, the information presented in that product is no longer confidential. Q: Does my NDA only cover 4th Edition D&D?
A: Not necessarily. It covers all confidential information from Wizards of the Coast, Inc. disclosed to you in the course of that agreement. When in doubt as to whether information should be considered confidential, contact an attorney.

Q: If I see someone else sharing information that I think is confidential, does that mean it's acceptable for me to share confidential information too?
A: No. Every circumstance is different, and by sharing information you were provided under your NDA, you may open yourself up to legal liability.

Q: Is it acceptable to post or download an electronic version of the 4th Edition rulebook? After all, the information’s public now, right?
A: No, but not because of your NDA. Illegally posting or downloading this information is a violation of copyright and intellectual property rights, not a confidentiality issue.

Here is some pointers that I feel some people in this community needs to be reminded of. There are people on all sides who are engaging in questionable postings.

* Personal attacks (from Wikipedia):

Wikipedia wrote:

"Generally, a personal attack is committed when a person substitutes abusive remarks for evidence when examining another person's claims or comments. It is considered a personal attack when a person starts referencing a supposed flaw or weakness in an individual's personality, beliefs, lifestyle, convictions or principles, and use it as a debate tactic or as a means of avoiding discussion of the relevance or truthfulness the person's statement. It works on the reasoning that, by discrediting the source of a logical argument, namely the person making it, the argument itself can be weakened."

Now some other examples to avoid:

* "Blahblah is for (morons, 4 year olds, grognards, people who fear change, mentally handicapped, lazy, etc.)"
-It implies that whom ever enjoys, plays or buys Blahblah is a (insert term here)

* Throwing someones words back in the their faces after adding your own twists.
-It's not clever & it does not get your point across. It's just rude and inflammatory.

* "You and your game/idea are stupid poopy heads."
-Just label it as a troll and move on.

* "My opinion/feeling is (insert opinion or feeling here)."
- If the person has refrained from other attacks then respond politely as they have the right to their opinion/feelings. No matter if those opinons or feelings are rational or not. (Doesn't mean you have to agree or like their opinion but you must be respectful.)

* "Blah is (better, funner, smilier, etc.)"
No, it's not. You should refrain from labelling something with an opinion or feeling statement without adding that it is your feeling or opinion. Other wise it comes across as an universal statement on Blah.

Example:

Spoiler:

Lets say that I don't like pickles and I really like onions. Now if I say "Onions are tastier then pickles." or "Pickles suck but onions rock!" or even "Onions are so much better then pickles."

(Now I have specifically chosen items that will not have too much emotional attachment... I hope.)

But you can see that a simple "I feel", "I think" or "Its my opinion that" can easily take the statement away from an universal statement and back to a personal one.

"I think that onions are tastier then pickles."
"Its my opinion that pickles suck but onions rock!"
"I feel that onions are so much better then pickles."

This is just my 2 cents. I see some good and reasonable people of this community posting beneath their normal level of well thought out quality.

A question to start:

How much does a dragon steak go for?
And how does the taste vary for each of the dragon types?

Side Note:

Spoiler:
In the last game I ran the PC's went to a very fancy restaurant and a couple of the PC's ordered the dragons steaks. A 12oz dragon steak for 50gp a plate. It was a slightly tangy meat with a hint of a minty flavour. The blanched a bit when they dug into the steak and then asked what type of dragon it was. It was a good steak, lawful good in fact. Some local adventurers had recently killed a silver dragon and sold the "extras".

Moral Note:

Spoiler:
After all is it really OK to eat the flesh of a sentient creature?

I have heard a lot of complaints about save or die effects. Now there are plenty of ways to stop save or die effects (boost your save, luck domain rerolls, death ward, etc.). If you wanted something easy, here is a spell for you:

Displace Death

Spoiler:

Displace Death
Necromancy (Transmutation)
Level: Clr 7, Sor 7, Wiz 7, Protection 7
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: One creature
Duration: 24 hours or until discharged
Saving Throw: Will negates (harmless)
Spell Resistance: No

Feeling his life force being extinguished, Rizal thanks his foresight as unconsciousness takes him. On his fallen body a small doll crumbles to dust in his place.

This spell protects a person from death effects. Any death effect that would instantly slay the target instead reduces the person to -1 hit points and causes them to be unconscious for 1d4+1 rounds. The HP damage can be cured normally through magic or natural healing but the unconsciousness must wear off naturally (1d4+1 rounds later). This is due to the backlash from the destructive energy that had targeted the person.

This spell does not protect a person from negative energy effects, energy drains, death from damage or from any other effects besides save or die effects (destruction, finger of death, circle of death, wail of the banshee, etc.).

Material Components
A small doll for the person touched. The doll requires wax, alchemical ingredients and at least one hair or drop of blood from the person to be protected. The doll costs a minimum of 250gp per doll.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Also if you want it easier to protect the whole group just change it to being one person per 5 levels or even one per three. You could also raise or lower the material component cost.

If you want the protection without the spell just adjudicate that a death effect now knocks you to -1 and guarantees unconsciousness for 1d4+1 rounds.

Tell me what you think.

So what would be a good way to simulate 2E Morale system in 3E?
Or at least make a good guideline for a creatures Morale?
(DM fiat already being understood as the option.)

I have some stuff to put in place before I can release an official press release to the effect, but I thought I'd let everyone here know what I have planned for D6.

Shortly, I'm going to be releasing the D6 System license for free. Although in the past it was effectively free, there was still some confusing aspect to the license which prevented publisher from understanding the cost and reimbursement aspects of the license. That is all changing. The D6 will be totally free to use for commercial and non-commercial purposes, and without restriction. It is not going to be released under the OGL per se, but anyone wishing to use the license will be able to do so but filling out a form on the website.

I'll also be releasing an SRD so that players can get the basics of the system for free. I'm hoping this will help turn players on to the D6 System and increase the player base.

I swear I remember a chart for 3.5 that is a static experience chart (like 2e AD&D). I can not for the life of me find it anywhere. Anyone else seen anything like it?

Good summary of 4E info: http://dnd4.com.

To all DMs & players:

How much of a background do you feel a character at 1st, 5th, 10th and 15th level should have vs requires to have when written up (at those levels)?

I'm tired.
I'm tired of hearing speculation, of getting my emotions up, of searching for info.
Tell me when 4E arrives. Or at least the OGL.
I mean really come on. We could have designed an entire new rpg system with the energy we have put into the "What will 4E actually be?" question. I don't know, I don't care any more.
I like D&D but then again I'm playing D&D currently.
4E? If it's awesome, maybe. If not, whatever.
I already have D&D. I don't have to buy a 2009 jaguar just because I own a 2008 jaguar (or even 'just' a 1970 jaguar).

Thoughts? Any one else burning out to the point of "They already made their decisions now I get to make mine"?

Here is a question:
From how many sources can a creature (PC or otherwise ) gain natural armor bonuses?

Example:
10 base + Armour (+4) + shield (+3) + ring of protection (+3) + Amulet of natural armor (+3) + feat that gives bonus to natural armor (+2) + Natural racial armor bonus (+3) + barkskin (+5) + monks belt (+2) = 36

Bold = natural armor bonus; total natural armor bonus of 13

Is this right?

A strange development last night. One of my players noted that they had known that the encounter was dangerous because the NPC enemy was in red clothing with dark red armour, his troops had matching black spiffy uniforms and his pavilion tent was also a matching red(that was apparently the give away).

So here it is. Ever notice that the higher level a NPC is the more dangerous they are (duh). But as a general rule the higher level a npc(villian) is the more their items match their theme?

DM: "The door to the crypt opens with a low grating sound. As the dust clears you see a skeleton standing in front of you. It is wearing blackened full plate armour and weilds a black greataxe. It's eyes fill with a red glow. As the eyes start to glow so does the sword as it is sheathed in red flames."
Players: "Crap."

11th level Barbarian (8)/Frenzied Berserker (3); elf

He was killed multiple times and attacked the party multiple times because he was a killing machine that could not control himself; oh and he was a 7' tall 250 lb elf who acted like a crazy military guy that would try and sleep sitting up with his eyes open and would always stick his arrows in a circle around him, even though I don't recall ever seeing him use his bow. And he yelled all the time like a drill sergeant (even at children). And threw defeated enemies guts around, and I quote "like confetti". The defeated enemies in question had tried to surrender but instead he clubed their heads in with their dead friends body. I then changed his alignment to CE.

I just wanted to mention that all this hoopla from WotC about 4e has given me the motivation to do something I never really considered before. I had played GURPS (2E?), Star Wars (WEG and D20), 2E AD&D, 3.0 and 3.5 D&D. I don't object to the concept of 4E just the way I have been treated about 4E. I don't like being lied to (about the possibility of 4E coming out before 2009), talked down to, or not being allowed to make an informed decision.

But enough of that it has been said over and over and if WotC hasn't caught the hint then maybe this will. Since the announcement for 4E I have expanded my reading. I am now going to be purchasing Shadow run 4E and World of Darkness 4E instead of 4E DnD when it comes out. I must thank WotC as I might not have done this if it wasn't for them. I will now continue to explore other system options as well as possibly look at 4E D&D (in a few years). They squandered my loyalty and really I am looking forward to playing gritty street running, using the force (D6 beats D20 any day in my book) and playing werewolves (and possibly exploring changeling).

So I wanted to know anyone else having the same experience? And if so what systems are catching your interest. I can always use the assistance in finding good games.
