I was already looking into treant's ranger guide but it just doesn't fit the concept of the character in my head. That's why I'm thinking tactician fighter bc it allows plenty of feats, and a decent amount of skills if given a good int. He isn't optimized towards fighting but I want him to be decent at it. Also, is there any traits that allow int to go to diplomacy rather than cha? I swear I saw something like that previously. That would allow me to dump cha a little while still maintaining both skill and diplomacy capabilities. I'll look into the urban ranger later on when I get back tonight though. ![]()
Ok, so the concept is that this NPC was an adviser to the king of the nation the PC's start in. I'm starting him off as a lvl 10 fighter and am considering a 2--or more--lvl dip into student of war for additional skills. I believe that he needs a decent amount of skills due to his political position and so I'm thinking about going with the tactician archetype to receive 4+int. In the first session the party chases the NPC over rooftops and both he and them must overcome acrobatic checks (so acrobatics/lighter armour is necessary for him as well). The highest character I've ever played has been a lvl 5 barbarian before so please be detailed and/or cite reference links to follow up on what you suggest. I'm going to start running one-shot testers in order to fine tune a campaign world I'm working on developing. ![]()
If I take on more oracle, I definitely want the revelations: Channel More importantly... energy body. Would love this for both character flavor and bc I've been considering purchasing daredevil softpaws boots (allows +5 to acrobatics check when moving through threatened squares). If I do go mainly oracle, I need at least one more Paladin lvl to achieve Aura of Courage/Mercy to be added to Lay on Hands. ![]()
Ok, so I'm currently unsure of which path I'd like to take--mainly do to my lack of experience. I currently have a lvl 4 with 2 oracle and 2 paladin lvl's and am about to take on my 5th lvl. I'm highly considering delving into the holy vindicator when the time comes. I don't want to be useless in melee but am still wanting significant healing if possible. Concept: Takes the damage dealt to others upon himself and heals himself as swift action lay on hands. Obviously this build is focused on dex: considering an AoO focus with potential crit build? Idk how feat sensitive a crit build would be though. Would like to take on Holy Vindicator unless advised otherwise? Note: Going to ask the DM if he wouldn't mind helping me create a home brew feat that would allow me to take on higher damage from the life links so that it's still useful during later lvl's. If you'd like to offer any suggestions that would be awesome as well. So, what are your thoughts, Concerns, or recommendations? I have until Sunday to decide on my next lvl but would like to have an outline ready for future reference. ![]()
So I was reading up on this guide https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B5kvBvq2DEHjRWFhSWc1ZzAzaDg/edit and so far it's been entirely focused on clerics. I intend to have a bbeg that is essentially the paradox of a character I'm currently playing (which will be an important NPC in my future campaign). That being said, the character I'm currently playing is an oracle/paladin with a strong paladin focus and so I intended for the main antagonist to be an anti-paladin. Would that strongly reduce the potency of the characters animating ability? The campaign idea is that each nation is run directly or indirectly by a "Dragon-god" and while one of the good oriented dragons was in slumber following an era of peace, a rival of it's takes control of the sleeping dragon's kingdom through a deceptive ruse and has it begin a war with it's own kingdom--creating an undead army is often expedited in time's that bring about more, you know, dead creatures. ;) The antagonist is basically the champion of this "dragon-god" and so may be gifted a powerful item that allows him to animate/control masses of undead. Any advice in bringing this concept into reality would be greatly appreciated! ![]()
Ok so I was toying with the idea of playing an oradin a while back simply because it worked extremely well with the type of character I wanted to play (as well as being forced into filling the healing gap of a group who lost their cleric player). Long story short, I wasn't a fan of the idea of using a Paladin because of the severe limits it impresses upon myself and the party. However, we've managed to play out a quest that was forced upon us by a crime lord (through blackmail); It was no easy task for me, might I add. However, I'm loving the concept of this character and have decided to continue it, but change the build idea. ~~Original Idea~~ Dex Build
Upon playing the character out and getting a feel of who he is, I've decided that I'd much rather play a melee with healing capabilities. So now the game-plan has shifted tooooooo: 4 Lvl's of Oracle (allows me to gain proficiency with my elven curved blade (agile)
Here's the current character sheet!

If you have any questions I'll try to answer them to the best of my ability! Background Story (Warning-LONG): As follows most--if not all--of Kitsune lore, they're a free-spirited people with very strong ties of loyalty towards their comrades despite their innate trickster-like habits. Also, it's very common for one to be honor-bound to dedicating his/herself as a protector/guardian of an individual as re-payment for a previous deed. Orradin (I know, original right?) grew up among the once prestigious Inari clan. Unfortunately, disgrace had befallen his clan due to a grave mistake made by his ancestor, (unnamed). (Unnamed) allowed a human who he was sworn to by their deity--the Lady of Fox's--to die, thus tarnishing the family name and sending his descendants nearly to exile. They were shunned for nearly 200 years before Orradin came to be. He grew up, often taunted and teased by his prank-ridden kin and shunned because of the grave mistake of his ancestry. He did his best to dish back with trickery and pranks of his own--as was customary--but that did little to his ego (let alone his name). Being shunned in the only world that he knew, Orradin was pushed further and further from the rest of his kin. He soon began to distance himself by spending large amounts of time secluded in the forest contemplating every aspect of existence: Why do I have to go through this; How could my ancestor turn his back on his ward, his people, his family; Is there somewhere else that I would better belong; Is there a better way I can live my life; What is my purpose; etc. These questions--and many more--tormented him relentlessly until one day he decided that he would give up this forsaken life and find his purpose: his home. It was this day that he took all of his belongings and departed from everything he had known in order to embark on a journey to find who and why he was. Orradin set out with only his ocarina (his instrument/form of art that he uses both as an expression as well as his form of prayer); his family's prized possession (a large, curved elven blade ornate and engraved with animals renown for speed and agility); and pure determination to do something better with his life. He left the place that he could never call home. Racing through the thicket of the forest, everything seemed a blur--his life, his family, the place he left, the undergrowth about him--and then it was. His vision faded instantaneously and he stumbled upon some shrubbery into an open clearing unbeknownst to him. Bewildered and horrified, the Kitsune's eyes darted to and fro in attempt to re-gain focus, but it was futile. It was then that he noticed a faint white blur just outside of 30ft from himself. A soft, intoxicating voice beckoned him forth, "Come, Orradin, my child." Like a fallen leaf caught in a breeze, his fear washed away entirely. He couldn't understand why, nor what this urge was that could compel him to shuffle forward on it's will alone. A beautiful spring lay before him, a gentle clearing where the canopy opened to allow golden shafts of light to shine and reflect off the surface of the water. In the center of the spring the white figure began to take form as he drew nearer. First an outline, and then.... wait, he was walking through the shallow spring, water dampening his fur--something that would have normally revolted him save for when bathing. Oddly, he hadn't noticed until he was waist deep and even more odd was the fact that it still held little to no merit to his actions. It seemed far too unnatural and surreal but that knowledge did naught to stop him from continuing forth. Orradin soon strode up the incline leading to an island-like bank in the center of the spring, astonished by the detail of the white figure that laid seducingly across a large, smoothly shaped stone that seemed a to perfectly harmonize with every curve of the white figures form. In the center of the stone lay a 9-sided shape bearing the brand of the Lady of Foxes. Before him lay an alluring young woman with hair that resembled the night sky, eyes that reflected the purest of sapphire, white fur as clean and elegant as the untainted snowfall before it touches the corrupt grounds beneath it. Behind her nine luxurious white tails swayed in a way that could entrance even the most willful of mortals. Orradin was kneeling before the Mother of his race, the Lady herself. A supple smile spread across the fair features of her face, her brows arched in a sharp, yet gentle way. She half sat, propped upon her left arm as her right reached forth and brush delicately across Orradin's chin as he met her gaze. With a voice so graceful he felt as though he would melt, she spoke, "My dear child, Orradin. I have longed for the day that you would come looking for me. It is this day that you shall begin a conquest and learn to understand your fate." Her hand trailed from his chin, up his cheekbone, and wiped a trail of blood from his brow which had gone unnoticed to him. He winced for a moment as a pain seared where she had touched, but did not want to insult his deity with such bad mannerism. "I have given you a gift today, a strength that will help you to redeem yourself and right the wrongs of your ancestors. However, this power comes at a price. Your vision is no longer as acute as what you once knew. Now, close your eyes, feel the peace within yourself and will your pain away." Orradin did as he was told and the pain upon his brow began to fade at the beckon of his will. Astonished he slid his finger over the spot to find a thin scar, but the skin had come together as if by some sort of miracle. Orradin was so purplexed by the whole encounter that he was choked to find words and regretted his inability to respond. "This is my gift to you, my child. Go and redeem yourself. Only then will you find what you are looking for, and only then will you be able to see clearly once again." ![]()
First off, I'm new to rping games but I know that rollplaying a Paladin improperly can lead to two different scenarios. 1: You bore the hell out of the campaign 2. You get butt#%&$ed by your deity. So with that being said I'm both asking for advice as well as asking any questions that come to mind. My first question is: does a Paladin "have" to be religious, or can he/she simply follow their own moral code so long as it's in alignment? I'm attempting to play a Kitsune Oracle with a Paladin dip who worships a god named Daikitsu (essentially a neutral god). My mentality behind it is that while he worships this god of his people, he also embodies a strict morality of his own creation. One technique I'm using in order to not hinder the party is that I don't try to force my beliefs on to others. That doesn't mean that I don't show signs of displeasure when seeing things that conflict with my views. ^ Back to my question about the Paladin having to be religious or not, if so is it compatible to worship a neutral goddess while being lawful good yourself? Any other pieces of advice so far as roleplaying and or advice on Paladin's/oracles, or even tips on religious based roleplaying would be greatly appreciated ![]()
Alright so as a little background I'll post the build that I have so far. It's a Kitsune Oradin. Str: 11
Oracle: Fey Foundling/Life Link
Basically the build is Oracle with a pally dip for armor proficiency and LoH. Lifelink allows me to heal 5 damage from each character attatched to my life link while taking the damage upon myself (Fey Foundling allows me to heal for +2hp per dice rolled). This allows me to heal them by healing myself rather than chasing them down. Weapon: Curved elven blade (agile)
5,600 left to spend. ![]()
Morse I'm going with your build btw. Any advice on items? I have the curved blade with agile and have 5,600 left to spend. Haven't bought anything besides the sword so far. edit: Well, your build sortof. I'm probably going to take more oracle than paladin in order to have enough healing capabilities at higher lvls and will most likely rely on healing more than damage. Might take a feat or something that doubles crit range unless I have to delve in multiple feats for it. I'll have to do a little research bc I'm new to this but I believe I saw a feat along those lines. ![]()
Alex, I'll definitely take your advice into consideration. I was actually just looking at that proficiency bonus last night too. Also, if you could pm me I'd like to talk about the Kitsune class and ask for a few pointers on roleplaying them effectively. My only concern is will this build be a strong enough healer as it lvls up? I have only played a lvl 5 barbarian so far as past experience goes so I'm trying to make sure it'll be effective throughout the full campaign. ![]()
I've been looking at the two classes more and am leaning towards more of an oracle with armor than a melee with healing. I am going to ask if the magical property can be something put on a piece of armor rather than my weapon (even if it's another random roll) so that I may purchase agile. I intend to get the combat reflexes trait for AoO but otherwise that Paladin aspects are merely for protection/visual concept. My character's background is based off of actual Kitsune lore and the character is actually going to be working as a guardian to one of the PC's without his knowledge. Basically my ancestor failed to protect an ancestor of the PC after the PC's ancestor had saved his life and my characters motive is to redeem the family/clan's honor in the eyes of his deity. That being said, life steal and the other abilities that the Oradin grant may not be ideal for optimization but it's ideal for the concept in which I'd like to try. I'm still looking for recommendations on feats but other than that I think I have everything else pretty much drawn up. I'm thinking 3-4 dip in Paladin and rest in Oracle atm. ![]()
I intend to be predominantly healing with a reach weapon for AoO with Menacing. He said the only way to get a different ability on my weapon would be to sell the item at half price and try to buy a new one which to me is a waste of resources. I am the only healer in the party and life link only goes up to 5hp per person linked I believe so that will only help so much at higher lvl's. I was hoping that the damage I could take would increase as we lvl up but I don't believe that's the case. I'll need more powerful healing to keep us alive. We have 3 melee and me and that's it. Actually, there are only piercing and slashing weapons being used in the group so would you have any idea of a decent bludgeoning weapon? If not then I'll probably pick glaive simply for the reach and visual of the concept. ![]()
The stats were rolled, not point buy, and so I cannot change the numbers themselves. I love the polearm idea. I actually have been wanting to do a paladin with a reach weapon such as that or halbert or along those lines so I'll definitely try that. How do you go about the dilemma of creatures being within 5ft? ![]()
Ok so new details have emerged! I had another post for this but everybody looked at the first post and replied without reading my posts after which had this updated information and I couldn't edit the post so, without further ado, have at it! Build so far:
Stats
Now this is the difficult part where I'll need further assistance. Please keep in mind that I am going to be the primary healer so please explain your thought process when recommending feats. Also, the character is intended to help survivability more than deal massive damage. I like the quickdraw shield idea as it allows me to use or rid myself of it in order to heal myself or others. What I'm wondering is if the falcata is the best weapon of choice? (considering a weapon with reach to possibly keep opponants at bay? Also, if I continue leveling as a Paladin will I be able to keep up with the healing needs of an all melee group? lol. We have 1 ninja and idk the other two meleers. 2 lvl's of paladin and 2 lvls of oracle to start 1 Paladin
Note: At the DM's discretion I start with a free +1 weapon with "Menacing" I've never played a campaign past 5th lvl so any advice on how to spend my 6 g's would be awesome as well. If you have need of any other info that would be useful let me know and I'll try to find it out. NO ARCHeTYPeS btw. ![]()

Nate, you seem very experienced in this matter and so I'll pose this question specifically to you, though I will take into consider what everybody else has said. I'm pretty much sold on the Oradin idea. I like the concept of taking on everybody's burdin and pain upon myself and focusing on self heals while still being able to participate. Race wise I'm highly considering Kitsune because I love the lore of them and wish to gain expertise in playing that race in general. They also feature both a dex and cha bonus in wake of an unfortunate -2 to str. I'm thinking heavy armor, maybe a quickdraw shield from what I heard of them. What I'm unsure about is feat progression and a good weapon. I believe a falcata (not sure how to spell it) was recommended for the build. The strategy was to use the weapon as a 2hand and then at the end of turn draw the shield. Is there a way of making this work along with retaining a decent amount of non combat skills? edit: Keep in mind I will be beginning at 4th lvl ![]()
I did a little research into the Oradin and love it! Kitsune are often viewed as sacred protector/guardian spirits and this goes hand in hand with the lore. Having paladin levels and armor would definitely be a little different however their racial bonus' work very well with this build; +2 cha and +2 dex to prevent taking damage with the only negative as a -2 to str. It seems that it would allow it to be a damn good protector even if it isn't the shear everythings skull loose kinda character I do believe I can maintain some dignity in combat with it :) ![]()
Ok, so I've only played a barbarian so far and after many weeks of unsuccessfully searching for a game, I've finally found one. The catch, they're already 4th lvl and need a healer. I have no details on the other characters atm other than their need for a healer, which sounds extremely dull to play for me so... Any creative ideas? I don't like the idea of being weak in combat, and my playing style is that of a smartass or trickster. I love Kitsune and am in the process of creating my second character ever out of it based off of a ninja-like concept but unfortunately that won't do for this campaign :( I was wondering if perhaps a Druid or perhaps a Paladin would work but am unsure about their healing capabilities (or any of their capabilities tbh) due to my lack of experience. What other rolls can a healer pursue? I should be able to get more details by later tonight. ![]()
I do not have a group. I'm in the process of building my own world based off of the Pathfinder system that I can eventually use to run games. I'm also going to be writing a novel based off of this character and his "test run" through my world in order to fine tune the details. I've given up joining a game as I've literally spent a month straight looking for one to join and found nothing so I doubt I'll ever get to use this character somebody else's campaign. I intend to have a monk, a kitsune ranger, and a cleric also in the test run party, though I'm not sure what else to add yet. My campaign is a low magic world and those with magical abilities is an extreme rarity. Obviously I'm lacking both a tank and a magic user. I'm open to any suggestions towards them as well. ![]()
I like the archaeological bard and the ninja idea presented. I'll have to do a bit of research into both this weekend when I have a bit more free time :D Black, would you possibly have the time to show me the depth the feats progression to your idea as the other person has so that I can gauge them both more clearly? ![]()
I'm currently in the process of making a Kitsune character who is supposed to be more charisma/under the radar based as well and look forward to any suggestions they might put on here. Mine'll probably be a ninja but more focused on disguise/impersonation :) Kitsune have an amazing nack for disguising themselves so unless the NPC is already committed to another class, that I would recommend to you. I'm new to pathfinder so I'm curious as to what kind of items are out there skill based :D ![]()
Magical Tail is a Kitsune only feat which gives "disguise self," Peet. And I haven't considered a spellcaster because I intend to write a story based off of this and already have at least the beginning layed out. Vazt I'll have to look into that. I don't expect it to be a ridiculous damage dealer, just capable. I'm afraid I'm not experienced enough in this to mix classes myself which is why I was hoping that I could get recommendations as to how many lvls/what feats at low lvls etc. I feel like my lack of experience would lead to my character being underpowered if not done properly. ![]()
Perhaps 2wf is out of the option seeing as I'd like to have a 1-2 dip in the kitsune feat magical tail acquiring disguise self + charm person (not sure if this applies to non-magical classes?) And the feat Realistic Likeness At what level's I would try for these feats I do not know as I have only build a barbarian as my only previous character. ![]()
Ok, so I have a character in mind but am unsure exactly what I'm looking for as far as building it. Basically the story begins as a young Kitsune adopted by a noble family in his clan upon the disappearance of both his mother and father. He sneaks away from his homeland in the dead of night (further disgracing his family name) in attempt to find out what happened to his parents. Until meeting up with the party to which he owes his life--after they save him--he travels specializing in disguising himself and other such "under the radar" means of surviving as well as gathering information. That being said, I'm torn between leaving this character simply as a spy, rogue cutthroat, or full blown assassin/ninja. I love the concept of a ninja ;) As far as his personality, he's a natural prankster (as his Kitsune blood would insure) and very charismatic. Ironically he loves to be the center of attention in his false forms, subconsciously feeling as though it overshadows the secrets he holds on to so dearly. I want him to specialize in disguising himself and impersonation with the boon of his people's natural abilities. Combat, I'd like something flashy rather than a blatant two-hander; perhaps some exotic eastern weapons. If you are not familiar with the Kitsune please glance over it before making suggestions. Hint hint, really like the ninja concept ;) Also, this character will be used in homebrew so either a 25 point buy or possibly roll for stats with a 25 buy being the default should anyone roll beneath it. ![]()
Monday-Friday I work without being able to go around it whatsoever. Personally, I used to write short stories and novels in high school but gave up upon losing a book I put a year and a half into... I'm hoping that this will give me a more in depth background into fantasy and help to inspire me to re-claim my passion for writing. And I would prefer something that is very balanced as opposed to the hack & slash I experienced with my previous campaign. ![]()
I plan on GMing in the future and am slowly building my own personal world but seeing as the most experience I have in this type of thing is only reaching lvl 5 with a barbarian I'm looking to play more first to gain a better understanding. I studied it quite a bit a while back but then our campaign fell apart and I drifted away without being able to find another game. I work 7 days a week so my only option is to find something with a consistent time on either a Saturday or Sunday which I can request off. either in the morning or afternoons after 5pm on one of those two days :/ If you have any advice or would be able to help me come up with my world/campaign I would be more than appreciative. However, I don't intend on running a game for quite some time. I plan on building a world/campaign that is very unique and immersive. ![]()
Ok, so I'm planning on building my own world/campaign but seeing as I'm new to all of this I'd like to purchase a good Adventure that I can use as an outline for creating my own. Things I'd like to focus on are the basics necessary to bring cities/politics to life and if anybody has advice on creating mysteries, puzzles, and other such things that bring about more social interaction/role playing would be greatly appreciated! Basically I'm looking for the top three recommended so please add a brief description of how it can help me and post a link so that I may further review the details before deciding my purchase! ![]()
Already have a map. And I'm simply putting a history to this as I will with all of my cities/regions/temples/etc because I want knowledge religion/knowledge history to play an important roll. This is going to be a campaign that I continually work on and build on. The culture's I'll focus on later on when I start to further build up the cities and nations but I want to get all of the "gods" taken care of first as what they represent will have the greatest influence on the world as a whole. Long story short the original god splits into two entities, continue creating races for their conflict, and eventually do battle themselves. While the god, Divinity, wants to destroy human kind (though they ignorantly revere him as the "good god") Arcania ends up sacrificing herself in order to seal Divinity into another existence. Doing so takes almost every ounce of her power and her composition breaks down and darkness then falls and splits into the forms of numerous Devils who inherit her Chaotic will. Note: During this War of Gods, dragons are originally created by Divinity to wipe the world of humans. Arcania creates dragons of her own to oppose Divinity's dragons. In the midst of these dragons there are 10 generals, one of each ethnicity who bear an enormous power and lead his/her ethnicity of dragons. Upon the fall of the two gods, these 10 generals instill their own reign over the world by forming the "Counsil of God." each of them divide the continents into 10 primary nations which worship them as their deity (though other nations could... or have perhaps rose over time. This is tbd.) The "Dragon Gods," as they are also called, have the ability to exist in another plane, to roam around as passing travelers, to be the king of their nation, or to simply use the nation and it's ruling bureaucracies as puppets in a play. While some toy with the fate of humanity, others sit back and watch idly; perhaps for opportunity, or perhaps due to lack of interest. I just want everything in my campaign to be truly detailed and not just, oh the god of sun, yeah he's a cool guy man everybody loves light to see. I want to have interesting backgrounds (and perhaps controversy of belief for players and NPC's alike to discuss and argue over. They're going to have their own personalities, domains, agendas/motivations, histories, etc. I don't intend on this being some random quick campaign: it's going to be something that I build up and perfect over time. ![]()
Ok, so I'm extremely new to D&D and any other form of roleplaying, yet I am extremely compelled to run my own campaign world. I'm now in the beginning stages of creating the world and am creating the history of "Creation." I just wanted to throw out what I currently have written up to get positive feetback, as well as constructive criticism. I intend to have a lot of history placed upon my world and back stories of races, cities, and nations so that I can bring it alive and immerse my future players in the atmosphere. Anyways, let me know what you think about my unfinished history of creation! :) At a time before time even existed, there was a single entity born to nothingness. A semblance to what would eventually become known as "Mankind." This entity was composed of two halves, two personas. The right half, of pure, radiant light, devout and righteous; The left, a shadow-forged and maniacal darkness longing for chaos and destruction. It wasn't long before the two halves of "God" were at each others throats, trying to influence their whole to each of their wills. Thus, the conflict between good and evil began, and as light cannot exist without darkness, so too were good and evil cursed to an existence of rivalry and bloodshed. With neither persona able to gain influence over the other, they conceded to play out their eternal struggle through game; the material plane--the board; the Humans--the pawns. The earth was molded of "God's" power, split evenly between both personas. It was composed of the divine, life-giving powers of the white persona--which came to be named Divinity--and the arcane power of the elements granted by the black persona--later called Arcanity. The two powers were interwoven, infusing the world with both divine and arcane energies alike. The personas, Divinity and Arcania, worked together--for the last time--in the creation of humanity. Born of both light and darkness, human kind would become quite diverse in every which way. Individual alignments would vary throughout the entire spectrum from good to evil, and all of the gray area in between. 300 Year War:
During the first period of peace--known as the "Divine era"--Divinity and Arcania took absence of their game, leaving the pawns to govern themselves. While there was no lack of conflict between pawns, both sides focused primarily on re-building. Meanwhile, the gap between good and evil began to wane as the bulk of humans took towards the gray areas between. They did so through necessity, greed, envy, lust, and/or other such manifestations that began to grow with the rapidly adapting race. Note: Tired as hell, will add more of it later but it's time for me to pass out -.-
