Character concept / build help?

Advice

Ok, so I have a character in mind but am unsure exactly what I'm looking for as far as building it. Basically the story begins as a young Kitsune adopted by a noble family in his clan upon the disappearance of both his mother and father. He sneaks away from his homeland in the dead of night (further disgracing his family name) in attempt to find out what happened to his parents. Until meeting up with the party to which he owes his life--after they save him--he travels specializing in disguising himself and other such "under the radar" means of surviving as well as gathering information.

That being said, I'm torn between leaving this character simply as a spy, rogue cutthroat, or full blown assassin/ninja. I love the concept of a ninja ;)

As far as his personality, he's a natural prankster (as his Kitsune blood would insure) and very charismatic. Ironically he loves to be the center of attention in his false forms, subconsciously feeling as though it overshadows the secrets he holds on to so dearly. I want him to specialize in disguising himself and impersonation with the boon of his people's natural abilities.

Combat, I'd like something flashy rather than a blatant two-hander; perhaps some exotic eastern weapons.

If you are not familiar with the Kitsune please glance over it before making suggestions.

Hint hint, really like the ninja concept ;)

Also, this character will be used in homebrew so either a 25 point buy or possibly roll for stats with a 25 buy being the default should anyone roll beneath it.

Perhaps 2wf is out of the option seeing as I'd like to have a 1-2 dip in the kitsune feat magical tail acquiring disguise self + charm person (not sure if this applies to non-magical classes?)

And the feat Realistic Likeness

At what level's I would try for these feats I do not know as I have only build a barbarian as my only previous character.

Kitsune are one of those inherently magical races. Have you considered some kind of spellcaster? Maybe a Magus. As a Magus you would have access to vanish and alter self, both good things for a Kitsune (though disguise self does not seem to be on the magus list, sadly).

Sounds like you know what you want, so my advice would be to just build it and post it here for feedback.

My thoughts are that you won't have enough feats to pull everything that you've mentioned together. The penalty to str means you are looking at dervish dance or sinking a good bit of your 25 points into str? If you go ninja, then a big ki pool with vanishing trick should handle combat and you get all of the stealthy-bits. There is a good ninja guide in the Advice sections of the boards that will help you there.

Rather than the feats for the spells you want, you could just go bard and get them at first level. Take the dervish archetype that gives you dervish dance and flavor it to fit your story. This also gives you more enchantment spells to take advantage of your racial dc boost.

Magical Tail is a Kitsune only feat which gives "disguise self," Peet. And I haven't considered a spellcaster because I intend to write a story based off of this and already have at least the beginning layed out.

Vazt I'll have to look into that. I don't expect it to be a ridiculous damage dealer, just capable. I'm afraid I'm not experienced enough in this to mix classes myself which is why I was hoping that I could get recommendations as to how many lvls/what feats at low lvls etc. I feel like my lack of experience would lead to my character being underpowered if not done properly.

Sooooooo, anyone want to help me with creating a build that matches my concept???

I would probably build it as a Guide Ranger 2 / Master of Many Styles Monk 2 / Unarmed Fighter 1 / Scout Ninja 15 .

The ranger dip so that you can grow permanent claws and have an attack routine of claw / claw / bite. Take weapon finesse at first lvl and make sure you buy an Agile Amulet of Mighty Fists asap. Monk will give you an enchanted version of Improved Unarmed Strikes that also counts as a natural attack if it favors you, meaning that you can mix unarmed strike iteratives with claw and bite attacks without making the later secondary attacks. The two lvls in MoMS monk and 1 lvl in Unarmed fighter will also give you access to the crane style feats.

This is a feat intensive build though, so I suggest that you leave magical tail out of this. Vulpine pounce and realistic likeness are feats that I will try to work into the build.

Avoid anything Rogue/Ninja.

The "Ninja" flavor comes from actual flavoring, not a class name.

Archaeologist Bard will work wonders for your concept.

The archetype comes with Rogue Talents, Spellcasting, Skills, Combat ability, and the Kitsune Favored class bonus will allow you to lie your way out of anything.

Throw a Mask of Stony Demeanor(500gp) and lie about your pet Tarrasque.

Fate's Favored trait will boost you into awesomeness.

Nab the Weapon Finesse feat, and an Agile Shortsword(Ninjatō) for all the dex based Ninja-like fighting style you could want.

Guide ranger 2 / Qingongg Master of Many Styles Monk 4 / Unarmed Fighter 1 / Scout Ninja 13

STR 8 (you can dump it completely if you start with an agile AoMF)
DEX 19 (every stat lvl increase here)
CON 14
INT 10
WIS 12
CHA 16

1 Ranger Weapon Finesse
2 Ranger Aspect of the beast (claws)
3 MoMS Monk Crane Style, Realistic Likeness
4 MoMS Monk Crane Wing
5 Unarmed Fighter Crane Riposte, Magical Tail (Disguise Self)
6 Ninja
7 Ninja Trick: Vanishing Trick, Improved Initiative
8 Ninja
9 Ninja Trick: Combat Trick: Shadow Strike, Swift Kitsune Shapechanger
10 Ninja
11 Ninja Trick: Rogue Talent: Offensive Defence, Arcane Strike
12 Ninja
13 Ninja Trick: Weapon Training: Weapon Focus: (Unarmed Strikes), Vulpine Pounce
14 Ninja
15 Ninja Trick: Invisible Blade, Iron Will
16 Ninja
17 Ninja Trick: Unarmed Combat Mastery, Improved Iron Will
18 MoMS Monk
19 MoMS Monk Monastic Legacy, Ability: Barkskin
20 Ninja

At 13th lvl you will have 10 BAB for an attack routine of claw / claw / bite / unarmed strike / unarmed strike -5. You will be able to make a full attack on a charge and each attack will also be a sneak attack because of the Scout’s Charge ability.

You will be able to deal impressive damage, while you have all the kitsune utility with realistic likeness and magical tail (disguise self).

I was gonna say Archaeologist Bard as well, BBT hit the nail on the head.

By the way, you can use a Rogue Talent gained by the Archaeologist Bard, to nab a Ninja Trick.

Also, you don't have to depend on unreliable damage, like Sneak Attack.

I would also avoid excessive multiclassing, as it hurts your BAB, and Spell progression, along with denying you higher level abilities, you would otherwise gain from any class you have levels in.

I like the archaeological bard and the ninja idea presented. I'll have to do a bit of research into both this weekend when I have a bit more free time :D

Black, would you possibly have the time to show me the depth the feats progression to your idea as the other person has so that I can gauge them both more clearly?

First, I would ask what is available to you.

What books are available?

Are you using retraining rules?

Are you allowed drawbacks?

What does the rest of your group consist of?

I do not have a group. I'm in the process of building my own world based off of the Pathfinder system that I can eventually use to run games. I'm also going to be writing a novel based off of this character and his "test run" through my world in order to fine tune the details. I've given up joining a game as I've literally spent a month straight looking for one to join and found nothing so I doubt I'll ever get to use this character somebody else's campaign.

I intend to have a monk, a kitsune ranger, and a cleric also in the test run party, though I'm not sure what else to add yet. My campaign is a low magic world and those with magical abilities is an extreme rarity. Obviously I'm lacking both a tank and a magic user. I'm open to any suggestions towards them as well.

I am in two games. Shoot me a PM of where you are, and I may be able to help you find a game.

I have to second this. Online games are a pretty good alternative to in person games. You lose something by not being in the same room, but you can also gain something by making use of some features of VTTs that can make the game run smoother.

Ideally I prefer to play roll20 as opposed to housed games but it's ridiculously difficult to find DM's for Pathfinder on there.
