Ambrose curses under his breath as the dragon peels away across the sky. He flies 80 feet in the dragon's direction and readies his sword and shield, preparing for another pass.
As Ambrose suddenly becomes aware of the dragon's might, a wave of apprehension washes over him, but he steels himself and casts it away, armoring himself in resolve. His focus allows him to protect himself from the subsequent blast of flames that surges forth from the wyrm's mouth, with Helakuu's abjuration absorbing much of the remaining damage.

Ambrose uses his speed and flight enchantments to pursue to the dragon, performing an aerial charge again.

"Aye, give me wings, Helakuu," Ambrose responds, remembering his bout with the green dragon at Skull Gorge. For his own preparations, in addition to activating his Knight's Pennon, he drinks a potion of protection from evil to steel himself against the red dragon's coming onslaught.
He looks to the Lions around him and gives his orders. "This menace will not go down easily. It will claim the skies as much as possible, and pour its breath down on any group it sees. I will not have your throw your lives away when your abilities can be better served in the streets, defending the city against these invaders. My wizard friend has allowed me to fly and engage the dragon above...Teyani, take Smoke and secure the streets around us. In the days before the battle, Ambrose assists wherever and whenever he can with the preparation of the defenses, though without shirking any duties set upon him by Captain Ulverth or Lord Jarmaath. He also sees to it that his own effects are ready for battle, having his weapons and armor serviced, sharpened, and cleaned, and Smoke well fed, rested, and groomed. He also finds time to visit his parents if he can.
When the horde presents itself in its full muster, Ambrose tightens his grip around his blade and clenches his teeth, fully steeling his spirit and will for the trials ahead. He looks left and right to his allies - his friends - and mutters a silent prayer to Heironeous to protect them in the battles to come and to guide their weapons and spells. He is just about to speak when Lord Jaarmath's voice comes into his head. He senses the urgency and immediately turns to face everyone else.
"It is upon is. Giants at the south and east walls. We are to break the southern attack." He mounts Smoke and raises his lance, fitted with battle standard. "For Brindol!"

I have 3,065 gp of my own funds already, so with the additional 4,500 I am going to purchase an Amulet of Natural Armor +1 for 2,000 GP, Horseshoes of Speed for 3,000 gp, and a Cloak of Resistance +1 for 1,000 gp. Also going to enchant Smoke's barding to +1 for 1,000 gp.
Ambrose salutes Teyani in the Stone Wyvern. "Very well, one beer when you save my life. And one for you now, and one for each of you Lionesses." He returns the grin and purchases a round of drinks for the four Lions. "May our lances and swords rain down with the fury and justice of Heironeous's lightning bolts."
Ambrose spends the evening among his brothers and sisters and the other warriors, taking up the role of informing them of the enemy's strengths, weaknesses, and tactics. He will find a moment to get to the stable for a few moments of peace and privacy and find Smoke, as he often finds clarity in grooming her before a big battle.
"This is it, old friend," he says to her as he inspects the new magic shoes upon her. "Our grandest, and most terribly battle is upon us. You have been there with me through the thick of it all, and once more I must look to you for your aid. You have grown stronger than I could have ever hoped, a true paragon of your kind. There is no greater honor for me than fighting in this saddle. I will protect you, as you always have me, even as I ask you to go into places that could mean death. Your life is as important to me as my own, the people of Brindol, even Lord Jarmaath's. We will show this goblin army what it means to face a true steed."
Later, when the elves appear to serve Leonar, Ambrose nods to Trellara with respect, and gives a half-grin to his druid companion, clapping him on the shoulder. "Doesn't seem like it was that long ago when you came across us in the woods. Now you command a squadron of Tiri Kitor wild elves who have mistrusted and denounced humans for centuries, and have sworn their lives to you. War is a strange thing, Leonar of the Witchwood. We can sell the +2 full plate I was holding onto as well. I was thinking of using it, but when we leveled up and I was reading my abilities again and I forgot as an Emissary archetype I don't have proficiency with heavy armor!
I wouldn't mind getting some magical horseshoes maybe for the upcoming city defense. I feel like I'll get to be on horseback a lot and if we will be coordinating to move about the city striking at key points then horseshoes of speed might be nice. +30 feet movement for 3,000 gp is kind of a steal. I think Ambrose needs AC more than anything, so maybe for him just an extra enchantment on shield or armor, or a amulet of natural armor or something. He already has a +2 deflection bonus from the ring.

Ambrose would prefer stationing them strategically throughout the city to bolster the troops; if groups of wounded soldiers must withdraw for healing, they are handing ground over to the enemy. Further, I feel that consolidating the divine magic makes for a logistic nightmare...how would the ferrying of troops to the temple be prioritized? Who would escort them? Could we afford the time and resources it would take to run those in need of healing to the back lines then return them to the battles? Better for morale to keep the clerics handy as well - less fear when you know there's a healer at your back. A bunch of green militia knowing the only people who can keep them alive are blocks away behind strong walls could cause early routs. I say we station them throughout the city but keep them covered and protected. We may lose more that way, but we'll lose exponentially more fighters if we don't. Note Ambrose will be a bit biased to do this - those are his brothers and sisters fighting out there.

"Should the walls fall, we take them in the streets. We can funnel them through alleys and thoroughfares where their numbers will be more a hindrance to them. Rain down bolts and arrows from rooftops. Build barricades to slow and occupy them. They will be clustered so that any mages we have can catch large groups in their spells. We should defer to our dwarven allies for the best way to defend these positions. We must dig in our heels here. We know the city, they do not. We can direct their movement to best suit our defenses if they make it in. The river can aid us as well, forcing them to bottleneck even more on the bridges.

Ambrose nods in affirmation of Captain Ulverth's assessment, and scowls at Lady Kaal for her remarks. When his companions turn inwards for a private discussion, he finds relief that his own views are similar to those of the others. He agrees with them, an with the Captain, that using the walls is the best option, though it dismays him slightly to have to openly disagree with the Lord of Brindol.
"We are all in agreement then," he whispers to Helakuu and the others. He nods and clears his throat, stepping forward to address the gathered council.
"It is on our authority as witnesses of this Horde in all of its might and capabilities that we stand with Captain Ulverth in his decision to use the walls as defense. I am sorry, Lord Jarmaath, but putting out the soldiers would be a folly. This Red Hand Horde is no clustering of goblinoid rabble as Elsir Vale has always been vexed by - these are soldiers, trained for war and hungry for blood. I do not doubt the valor, will, or strength of my brothers and sisters of the Lions, nor of the Tiri Kitor and certainly not of the dwarven mercenaries, but much of our forces will be town guard and militia, as yet untested against such foes. I fear gathering us outside of the walls would only serve to put our backs to an anvil for the enemy hammer to strike us against. If this force was merely goblins then I might say that meeting the enemy on the field would have merit, but as we have stressed, they have allies that would make such a tactic unnecessarily dangerous. Giants and ogres alone put our forces at a disadvantage in the open. Manticores and dragons striking from above would force us to fight on too many fronts. I think it is wise, under the circumstances, to use the walls for their purpose. Defense. We have fine archers in our elven allies that amplify our forces atop the wall. And as Harek has illustrated, the Dwarves will fight best in the streets and alleys, should the enemy breach the gate. Dragons and manticores will have to separate themselves from the army to engage us. It gives us every advantage."
He moves his eyes more singularly to Lord Jarmaath before going on. "I would be the first to sing the praises of Brindol, my lord. This city is my home and I cherish the place more than any other - every street, every building, every signpost. But I also cherish the people here, for the fine men and women who have made Brindol their home have also made her into what she is. Walls can be repaired, buildings rebuilt. Lives are trickier to restore, I am told. Let the city we have toiled to build for generations now do its duty and protect us from those who would see us harmed."

Ambrose salutes Palena as she departs, and starts when Teyani claps him on the back.
"Teyani! You stayed ahead of the Horde, well done. The greatest task is yet before us. Heiroenous guide your sword and lance in the battle to come."
The knight breathes deeply when he sees the council, recognizing each of the assembled members. The most prominent figures of the city. He is not so pleased to see Lady Kaal, but he swells with pride in the presence of his own Lord Jarmaath. He also is honored to be standing before his superior commander, Captain Ulverth, and salutes him out of respect and reflex. When he sees Sellyria, Speaker Wiston, and Soranna, he raises a hand to them and smiles in greeting.
Ambrose beams when Lord Jarmaath shakes his hand, and nearly fumbles when he is referred to is Lieutenant. He blinks but manages not to trip over his words too badly, only offering a "My Lord..." before Jarmaath moves onto Harek. He is left a bit awestruck and his eyes briefly move to Captain Ulverth.
Being in the presence of his own boss and Lord, Ambrose will speak as much as he can on the goings on. He will relay every detail he can remember from the first ambush outside Drellin's Ferry to riding through the gates of Brindol. He will not hold back any information out of honor and duty, but he'll be a bit dismayed in letting the lich live. Ambrose will make a key point to make known the fact that everything done was a result of the combined efforts of every member of this team and how they have gone far out of their way to sacrifice life and limb for Elsir Vale. He doesn't like to highlight his own accomplishments, but rather those of his squad. As far as the might of the horde, Ambrose will stress how organized they are, how planned their campaign is, and what allies they have gathered. He wants it to be clear that this is not some ragtag confederation of goblinoid clans. Ogres, ettins, gnolls, minotaurs, manticores, lizardfolk, barghests, behirs, worgs, hellhounds, strange draconic creatures (the harrowblades and the black dragon-men), and of course the dragons themselves. They have powerful magic at their disposal and are armed with enchanted weapons and armor, supplied with potions and scrolls. He touches on the Wyrmlord leaders and how they have dispatched one at Vraath Keep and in the Thornwaste but goblin Wyrmlord at Lake Rhestin escaped atop a black dragon.
He mainly only wants to impress Captain Ulverth and Lord Jarmaath. He doesn't really care what Lady Kaal thinks. He is as indifferent to the priestess as she seems to be towards everything else.

Ambrose blinks at the reference to 'Harrowfield's Heroes,' quite unsure of what to say to that. He clears his throat and straightens his posture in the saddle before nodding to Palena. "Lead on, Lady Cromberg."
The emissary feels positively warm being within Brindol again, and it is apparent on his face. He can't help but beam with pride for his fine city and a wistful happiness at being back settles onto his countenance. In the gaps between talk he points out a few specific points of interest to his companions as they make their way through the city.
"I would like to inquire about the refugees you spoke of, my lady. Did the citizens of Drellin's Ferry make it safely? Speaker Wiston and...ahem, Captain Soranna Anitah?" he adds, strangely and suddenly remembering the Captain's smile to him, her touch on his arm. He shakes his head. "They were the first evacuated. I hope they made it safely."
Adding on to Helakuu's inquiries.."What kind of enemies indeed...tell us, have you seen any dragons? Manticores? I feel that the airborne enemies will be the most problematic, though hopefully Sellyria brought Killiar and his owl-riders."

Ambrose smiles at Helakuu for the support as they travel across the Thornwaste. "You have my thanks, Helakuu. I know this Vale is not your home, but you have fought - and died - bravely to help defend it. I could name no mage I would rather have at my side in that fight or any other."
A warmth seeps throughout Ambrose. He had always found a kinship with his brothers and sisters of the Lions of Brindol, but his tasks had for so long had him riding alone across the breadth of the vale. These companions who had fought and persevered alongside of him...he feels a true sense of brotherhood with them.
To Helakuu's quandary, he offers a suggestion. "We know the Horde marches across the Vale, west to east. Our advantage is speed in our small numbers. I say we ride hard for the east and hopefully ahead of the Horde and see what villages along the Dawn Way need our aid or can give us information."
Night, however, offers a more concrete plan.
Ambrose starts awake, reaching for the air. "Lord Jarmaath!?" He stands swiftly, looking around. "Lady Starsinger? Hello?" Looking around, he rouses the rest of his companions. "Helakuu, Harek, Leonar, Aleste!" He closes his eyes to see if the elf is still there while he tries to explain. "Lady Starsinger of the Tiri-Kitor - she visited me in my dream! She says the Red Hand closes in on Brindol. We must make haste! If there is ever a place where we can best this Horde, it is there."

Harek's proclamation seems to lighten Ambrose's mood once the lich has departed. He walks over, Smoke's reigns in one hand, and claps the dwarf on the shoulder with the other. "Now that, Harek, is a plan I can get behind. Even as we speak, the Red Hand marches across the Vale. We shouldn't allow their trek to be so easy."

When the group departs the stonework lion of horrors, Ambrose swiftly collects his steed, Smoke. He checks her over for any injuries or anything else that may have happened to her in the shadow of the lair, and one satisfied strokes her nose. "It will be good to ride again, old friend. And good to put this foul place at our backs."
During the night, the knight of Brindol paces anxiously. "It is good that we are severing this lich from the Red Hand, to be sure...but I hate the thought of leaving him be to continue whatever foul arts he is practicing. I cannot claim to know much of magic, so I will trust your judgment that this...thing...is too powerful. I could sense it, too, in his presence. Some unsettling cold coming off of him..some stale air of dread. We have toppled giants and beheaded dragons and slain our share of mages, but perhaps this foe truly is beyond us...for now. I will set my focus on defeating the Red Hand, but if this lich should ever raise a bony finger against the Vale I will return to stop him." After a moment, he adds, "I hope we can trust the word of a thing without a heart or a soul."

Ambrose stands silent as the transaction occurs, watchful for any trickery or surprises that the lich might have in store for them. He rests his hand on the hilt of his blade, eyes fixed on the undead. His teeth are clenched throughout the exchange and he eases only when the lich is gone.

Ambrose stares hard and cold at the Ghostlord as he speaks, gauntleted fingers tightening around the hilt of his blade. The motes of cold blue light that dance around it seeming to respond to his clutch. The knight swallows, still unsure of letting this evil continue to work its foul magic uncontested, and skeptical that it would take the deal anyway. He looks left and right as his allies seem content to take the lich up on its offer, however, and so he slackens ever so slightly and merely gives a stiff nod towards the undead mage. "Very well. The accord is made."
Ambrose turns and walks out with the others, offering a final glance over his shoulder to the unhallowed fiend. One day...

Greetings and welcome to our merry warband, good to have you along.
I did indeed take the ring of protection+2. Suppose I'll take a potion of Jump and Invisibility as well. I'd like to keep the +2 Full Plate around if that is okay - I might upgrade to it soon depending on how savage the enemies get. I just prefer medium armor in general.

Sorry to hear about your troubles CH, but I understand completely. It's been a wild ride, that's for sure. Hope to game with you again down the line sometime.
Sure, Aleste. I'd like to see this one through to the end.

Ambrose tightens his grip on his blade and steps forward, doing his best to maintain his composure while at the same time hiding the sheer look of disgust his feels trying to surface. He approaches the lich with great wariness, eyeing the undead mage intensely to watch for any tricks or sudden movements. He swallows hard and strands straight. "I am Ambrose Harrowfield, of Brindol," he says, thinking it better to not refer to himself as a Lion of the city, what with this lich's propensity for dead cats. "We...have no quarrel with you. We are against the goblins of the Red Hand Horde and those they call their allies. The hobgoblin and her forces here were our enemy, and they we have slain. As I and my compatriots have come to understand...the Red Hand has your allegiance as well, though it would seem that the alliance is not one you are keen on, judging from the words in a letter we found. They have coerced you into their campaign against Elsir Vale, have they not? What if we were to ask you to break that alliance? Surely these goblin schemes mean nothing to you." Ambrose finds his voice as he speaks, bolstering himself in the weight of his own words, much as he had when speaking to the elves in the woods before. His heart isn't so much in this speech, however, but he knows that it must be done.
"We have acquired what the Red Hand took from you," he says, narrowing his eyes and preparing himself in the subsequent second in case the lich turns hostile, but he elaborates quickly. "But we are willing to return it to you, should you be willing to sever your ties with this Red Hand and agree not to assist in the offense against the Vale and its inhabitants."
He studies the lich for any read on its reaction, then galcnes back to his allies in preparation for the response.

"The sooner we find him and leave this place the better. The Red Hand marches as we speak," Ambrose offers, readying his sword and shield as he strides up to Harek. "Choose a door, Harek. In a citadel of stone, I would follow the dwarf." A slight grin cracks the knight's face as he looks over to Leonar. "Granted, this citadel is a giant lion, so maybe Leonar would have a better idea."
As the rest of the group investigates secret doors and passages and objects of necromancy, Ambrose paces the perimeter, sword and shield in hand, sternly looking down each corridor as he passes it, on guard. This place obviously unsettles the knight, easily seen by the way he regards the pool and the floating orb with absolute disgust. He narrows his eyes at it at one point, but cannot seem to make anything of its purpose, so he continues his patrol.

He also takes stock of his potions and oils, wondering if a battle with the Ghostlord is inevitable. If so, he reasons that an oil of bless weapon would be handy to have readied. He also comes across his potions of shield of faith, and after taking them out of his pack he walks over to Aleste.
"I do not think that these potions will do me good anymore now that I wear this magical ring. Take them." He offers the two potions to the Alchemist.
Shield of Faith +2. Deflection bonus, so these don't stack with the ring.
After the revelations are made about the orb, Ambrose frowns.
"It should rightly be destroyed. But I would imagine that doing so would draw the ire of the lich. If we are deciding it would be better not to cross swords with him...then perhaps we must leave this alone. For now."

Ambrose regards the pool with disgust, shaking his head. "I don't like this place, not at all." He paces around, tightening his grip on his sword. His muscles ache as he does so, having taken a beating in the three successive battles with behir, hobgoblins, and bonedrinkers. He beseeches the lion shaman for a few more charges of the wand, listening to the others speak as he is restored.
"The thought of leaving this undead mage here to do as it wills unsettles me, but it is true that it may not be prudent at the moment for us to cross swords with him...if he is as powerful as the legends would say. The Vale will need all of us in good health to aid in the defense against the Red Hand." He lowers his voice and adds, "we can always return to deal with the lich after the Red Hand is defeated."
Really hogging the wand here lately. I did realize I never actually officially claimed the Ring of Protection +2 as was pointed out in the discussion thread, so I've added that to my sheet now if that is cool. AC is now 24.
