Grand Lodge 4/5 ***

Indeed, indeed! And for a moment, I thought I had a chance, the more fool I!

Congratulations on your recent death! Those of us who have met death many times share a special bond! I myself have died 5 times, and each time, I spit in that &%$#@ Pharasma's face before being brought back! I can only imagine that there is a special kind of hell waiting for me when I finally die forever!

I agree with We Be Goblins I. That's the scenario I started out with in my region. It's good for new players, and there's not too much terribly confusing for new GMs. And people will usually play that one again, so tables make.

That's amazing! Congrats, Doug.

I love this scenario. I've run it three or four times and played in it once. The first time I played in it, I saw a wizard go down to a failed shocking grasp. Minotaur crit for somewhere around 40 points of damage. It was the first character death I'd seen at the table, and it served to drive home the occasional brutality of PFS missions. Of the times I've run it, I only saw PCs go down to it once, and that was new players who charged the minotaur instead of going into the cave. The minotaur killed 3 of them before the rest finally fled.

I felt a little bad, as two were brand new players with pregens, but I said, "Okay, so you want to charge the minotaur despite Janira urging you to flee? Let me explain about reach, threatened squares, attacks of opportunity, and Valeros's hit points. Let me also point out this five foot wide cave that the minotaur would have to squeeze to get to you. Here's an arrow pointing to the cave, just in case you were having trouble locating it on the map. You still wanna charge?" *AoO, hit, Valeros in negatives without swinging his sword once* "Okay, let me explain about constitution checks made to stabilize..."

They were my first character deaths as a GM, (that weren't in We Be Goblins), and as such, will always be precious to me.

I guess that brings me to my point. After the minotaur finished Janira and the other PCs fled, bled out, or stabilized on their own, he would have no reason to be at the other side of the caves, would he? I mean, without Janira to kite him? I just ruled that he stumbled off to heal and recuperate, leading to a somewhat anticlimactic ending. I'm curious as to whether I should've let the minotaur be at the other side anyway, just to give a final battle. Thoughts?

That's a great idea. I have table tents, but it never occurred to me to put anything on my tent other than my character's name and "Human Fighter" or somesuch. Imma hafta steal that idea and alter mine... I'm only sad because they're all laminated and printed on card stock and I put a lot of work into them...

Oh well, I'll probably make my wife make the replacements, anyway. I made the first run for us, she can take the second run.

Come on out and join us for three days of PFS at Marble City Comicon at the Knoxville Convention Center. We've got five or six tables scheduled over five slots of Pathfinder goodness. You can find Con details at Marble City Comicon and signups at Warhorn.net.

The lineup will include almost every season five scenario and a few classics. Play the Destiny of the Sands trilogy all in a row. For those who want bragging rights, Bonekeep Level I will be offered. Please contact me at nickgpfs@gmail.com with any questions.

Sounds good. If we can get half as organized as you guys, we'll be in business.

I also agree with Finlanderboy and FLite. If you can get an experienced role player, that will help, too.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

One of the things you can do is make sure you role play your NPCs. It'll be uncomfortable at first, but make sure to make eye contact and directly ask questions of individual players. That will help them realize that a response is necessary.

As far as not understanding mechanics, that's just gonna take a little bit of time. Just try to stick as close to the rules as you can, and be patient. And never tell your players they can absolutely NOT do something they want to do. Just explain to them what they need to be able to do something, and make sure they understand consequences. "So you want to charge that minotaur. Well, you can absolutely do that, but let me explain about 'reach' and 'attacks of opportunity.' Would you still like to charge? Okay, so that didn't work out real well. Now we get to cover something I like to call 'constitution checks.'"

As for your rogue, it sounds he really wants the rogue talent Hide in Plain Sight. Explain how he can go about getting that talent.

And even though you didn't ask, here's a free piece of advice I tell all my new GMs: accept the fact that you are gonna occasionally make mistakes. Just try to move on without getting too bogged down, and make it a fun experience.
