Character Building in the Strategy Guide

Thursday, March 5, 2015

In anticipation of its impending release, here's a quick walkthrough of how the Strategy Guide helps players build characters:

1. Take the character theme quiz to find your theme.

2. Read your theme description.

3. Choose a race.

4. Visit your theme's class section and begin filling out your character sheet.

5. Purchase your starting equipment.

6. Fill in additional details.

7. Read through the intro to playing the game, and check out the specific combat tips for your theme.

8. Start your adventure!

Tune in next week for a Strategy Guide art preview!

Looks really great! Can't wait to get this!

...but now is a bad time to mention a typo, isn't it? :(

"If you want a height or weight outside these ranges, take with your GM."

Sorry. I had to point it out when I saw it. I may forget about it later.

Still, this looks like a brilliant way to guide a new player through character creation and learning the rules. I know I'll use this a lot! :)

I love the last answer on the quiz. Let me guess, Cleric? :)

It was a fun answer to write. As I recall, it points to many of the rogue, bard, and wizard themes (especially the illusionist).

Hi there.

This has less to do with the blog post, and more to do with an email I got regarding the Strategy Guide. I did preorder mine, and I think shortly after that I think I started the RPG subscription again.

Anyway, the email said something about "preorder by March 9th to get the PDF" (free I think). But I already did my preorder ... I'm guessing I don't have anything I need to do, and I'm mostly interested in the book itself, but having access to the PDF is nice ... anyone else having something like this going on? (pre-ordered the strategy guide, have an existing or recently started a RPG sub, then get an email from Erik Mona about the PDF)?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer some clarity here. :)

The email was sent out to all RPG subscriber regardless of whether they had already preordered or not.

Question about the Conjurer Wizard Theme: Is giving up Abjuration as a prohibited school a good idea? I thought it was one of the schools that it was not acceptable to give up.

It's thematic. Conjuration brings things closer, abjuration pushes them away.

That's one way to put it, I guess. ;)

D'oh. I blame iOS spell correct - it doesn't get along well with RPG vocabulary. At least I noticed when it changed 'abjuration' to 'abjure toon'.

Fixed, now that I am on a device with a proper keyboard.

For dispel magic alone I would have difficulty following that recommendation.

I would personally suggest illusion and enchantment for a conjurer - I deal in real things, not intangibles like emotions or pretty light shows.

Eh, you can still prepare it for two slots and be better off than a universalist.
