Pronunciation guide. . .

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

I am the king of foolish questions, but, ever since I first read about them in the G-1-2-3 module, I've been calling them Dr-o (long O) elves. Is it drow as in blow or drow as in plow? Anyone know? What brings this to the forefront is I've started reading the Salvatore books and the word is on every other page.

although many people seem to pronounce it your way, officialy Drow rymes with Cow and Now rather then row or low.

Well, you're in luck... according to the pronunciation guide in issue #93 of Dragon magazine, both are correct.

Thank you both. You'd think EGG would have settled on one or the other.

Yeah, well, I just think it's pretty sad that not only did I know which issue the pronunciation guide was in, but that I was able to quickly find it and look it up... I don't know whether that means I use that issue a lot (I do, there's a killer little traveling gypsy caravan in that issue that was always one of my favorite articles. I've been meaning to convert it to 3.5e), or that I spent way too much time reading Dragon magazine as a kid.

Then again, knowing one's Dragon collection is useful, so I shouldn't complain.

The 2e Greyhawk Player's Guide also has a little pronunciation list of several Flanaess names (including Flanaess - pronounced flah NES) on page 5. Amoing them is "drow" which rhymes with either how or crow according to the guide.

Isn't it wonderful to have two different guides agree?

He did, when Gygax says Drow it rhymes with Cow.

I don't think it matters. Whatever floats your boat (or rows your drow or whatever.)
