The time is now past March the 2nd 00:00 UTC and two of my games have already started so, I guess we're good to go.

An ill wind stirs whitecaps on the dark Jeggare River, carrying with it the faint odor of spoiled meat. Travelers crossing High Bridge into Korvosa grumble and pull their collars up against the cold. Past the somber city gates is a sprawling square plaza. Throughout the area, small clusters of people gather close together, stuffing their hands in their pockets as they engage in quiet conversation. Several guards hover around the edges of the plaza. A gray tabby cat rests nearby, its bright yellow eyes seeming to watch over the crowd.

At the meeting point for the team, a woman wanders straight to location.

She walks with slow steps, is clearly from the Inner Sea region but is wearing Osirian clothing and a pendant showing the holy symbol of Horus which is the Eye of Horus. She is not the most agile woman although she is clearly beautiful.

The black haired woman approaches the group.

"I am Aya Eman, follower of Horus, the god of the sky, whose eyes are the sun and the moon, whose feathers are the stars, and whose wings are the sky!" she says and raises her arms to the sky.

She is wearing a breastplate armor and has a small buckler that is attached to her left arm. She also carries a backpack.

She looks at you all again.

"I was advised that we should start gathering here. I am ready to do so!"

A slim figure in unremarkable clothes is already standing at the meeting point, with an exotic light elvish blade in her belt and a light crossbow in her hand. On her back there's a finely crafted backpack. Who successfully peeks under the hood of her cloak gets to see the face of an elvish woman... with a large scar going diagonally from the upper left of her forehead to the lower right of her chin. She briefly frowns, then answers.

"Name's Rosla, Rosla El Func. I've already gathered here an hour ago. Any idea where the others are? They're all taking their sweet time, it seems..."

"Greetings, I am Kageryu Takeda."

As you are getting to know each other a large-eyed woman in a green gown waves, and then introduces herself by handing out cards bearing her name— Zeeva Foxglove—and the address of the Green Market in South Shore. A cat bearing a striking resemblance to the one that rested on the square’s cobbles a bit earlier on walks alongside her. I owe you an explanation, she says, But let us travel as we talk, for my market cannot do without me for long. I know it sounds ridiculous, but there are actually three disasters waiting to strike.

The merchant walks briskly, slipping gracefully past the crowds and carriages. It began after I heard about a Varisian caravan parked outside the city. The vagabonds had lost everything to bandits, and, my marketplace is so profitable now, I can afford to share my bounty with those whom fate mistreats. I brought them some produce, and in return, their fortune-teller offered me a harrow reading.

Foxglove’s rosy complexion pales. The spread foretold good fortune, almost to excess—that is, until she turned up The Yellow Prophet. A legendary lost card, although I didn’t know that then. Its appearance upset the soothsayer. She said the card required that three more cards be drawn, and she did so hastily, giving me hardly any insight. What I’ve learned since is that each of those cards portends a dark fate—a disaster.

She produces a deck of cards from her handbag. It seemed the fortune-teller was hiding something, so I obtained my own harrow deck and researched the cards’ meanings. But I am still in the dark, and my own auguries tell me that time is running short. I need brave investigators, well-versed in the arcane, to determine where these calamities will strike—or, failing that, track down that fortune-teller, so that she can explain her strange behavior.

Foxglove shows you the cards. Harrow cards can be tricky: an ominous card isn’t always negative, and a cheery card can turn calamitous. Instead of relying on their traditional meanings, I’m guessing the cards have connections to people or places in Korvosa. Maybe you can catch something I’ve overlooked? At this point, Foxglove shows you The Betrayal, The Cricket, and The Unicorn.

((see Handout 2))

Kroissando:
The Betrayal: “This card can either mean selfishness or self-sacrifice or a choice between the two.” The Cricket: “A card for quick-witted travelers, some of whom find glory, while others return empty-handed.” The Unicorn: “This card promises rewards from a friend, but some friends are false, and some prizes are poison.[/b]

An abrupt cold breeze blows from up the street, carrying with it a voice not quite like any you have heard before: mellifluous, sandy, sibilant, and eerily resonant, with only a faint lisp and an even fainter Tian accent:

"'Disaster'? Fortunate, thee! Surely thou did not become wealthy without knowing how to ride the winds of opportunity it brings!?"

At the center of a conspicuous gap in the crowd ahead, a lone man saunters in your direction with motions like those of a finely-articulated mannequin or expertly-directed marionette. Heavy blue and black robes hang from his rail-thin body, and despite some Human-like features, any chance of being mistaken for human is immediately deterred by the Elf-like solidity of his bulging eyes, and skin only a slightly lighter shade of blue than his robes. A large black crossbow hangs at his back and an imposing silver staff tipped with a sort of built-in lantern rises above his head, while at his side, a shimmering silver icon that you hesitate to categorize as either a moon or a skull swings like a pendulum. He somewhat clumsily brandishes his Open Road token with one hand, while his other grips...a doll?!?

Perception DC 12:
The doll bears a strong resemblance to its bearer, but not identical; more like that of a relative or something.

Heal OR Knowledge (Local) DC 14:
You're pretty sure the doll has been stitched together from the treated skin of some sort of humanoid - possibly multiple of such.

Heal OR Knowledge (Religion) DC 16:
The velvety crunching sound the doll's insides make as he moves about with it suggest it is stuffed with ashes of the sort left by cremated remains.

It is difficult to explain, but you feel as if everything near him is simply more still and silent than it ought to be, and as he continues his approach, you increasingly sense this...deadness around you: The air is more still, yet colder. Dust and ash in the air seem to drift more slowly. The sounds of the vibrant market seem more hollow and distant. Even the others around you start to feel further away than they actually are.

"How do you do?" He continues with a toothy, near-curveless smile wider than his head would seem capable of accommodating. "I am Saturn Samedi Arundhati Balthazar Krishnamurti Fumanchu Maitreya, and I believe you are our errand here. I, for one, would not b..."

He suddenly interrupts himself as if hearing something; he looks down at his doll.
"Really, you think so?!...Hmph, a lot of good that did at The Battle of Silent Juncture, to name just one example...Well you tell that to him!"

I answered that earlier but here is the answer again - The fortune teller and her troupe vanished into Korvosa days ago. They could be anywhere. Maybe ask around? She cut a memorable figure—a Varisian half-elf with scraggly black hair and rotting teeth.

Maybe Foxglove replies. She then offers to give you an abridged harrow reading, called a choosing, to grant you luck and insight on your quest. She isolates and shuffles nine cards from a single suit, and then prompts each of you to draw a card.

If you want to draw, roll a d10 and reroll any rolls that are the same as someone else's roll or a zero.

Or just choose one from the latest slide.

Once you have drown your cards you have two choices of where to go. Traitor's Mews or Kendall Amphitheater. Aya already suggested the Amphitheatre. Does everyone else agree?

It was either that or we made a Diplomacy (Gather Information) for info on the soothsayer and where her and her people went.

You have also learnt that penniless Varisians often gather in a building called Traitor’s Mews in Old Korvosa, and that the fortune-teller was recently seen near that building.

8) Character Ancestry?: Elf (from Tian Xia)
9) Replay?: No
A) Anything else I should know?: He's a typical magus build so probably something you've seen before.

I won't add the PC to the list yet in case people want to go low tier. This adventure was recommended to me by Jhaeman so odds are I'll stay even if Kageryu is out of tier.

A) Anything else I should know?: aspiring Mystic Theurge; being a Gravewalker requires a Chronicle, which of course another character of mine has earned; should have another Chronicle under his belt by the time we start (NOT that that should change any of the above); worships Groetus

I would much prefer high-tier!

Actually, know what? Heck with it, I've changed my mind, I want to play this character. I've got 3 characters at 13 XP right now, it's time one of them pulled ahead. Please remove Saturn from the roster, despite his having previously dotted in. Shadow Dragon, if you want to play something different this'll give you more reason, if not I daresay my Magus is sufficiently different from yours:

1) Player name: I'm Hiding In Your Closet
2) Character name: Xukong
3) PFS#-Character#: 40025-10
4) Character Class & Level: Kensei 5
5) Faction: Dark Archive
6) Regular or slow speed for chronicle: regular
7) Perception and Initiative Bonus: Perception +2; Initiative -1 (yes, you read that right!)
8) Character Ancestry race?: Dhampir (Ru-Shi)
9) Replay?: No (or at least I'm pretty sure)
A) Anything else I should know?: several cool traits, feats, and Boons; +1 insight bonus to AC and saving throws when flat-footed and/or during surprise rounds; -1 penalty to saves versus sonic effects; can use this as a slow but reliable way to heal itself during downtime (and yes, is an 'it' for pure and simple reasons of nobody being able to get close enough to differentiate otherwise, and its own personal contempt for all things flesh)

Not saying you must go this route but, if you're worried about the level difference, you could go with the pregen L4 cleric.

Grand Lodge

I'm personally not worried about the level difference, but if the rest of the party is, I can do that.

He's designed for mobility and support, anyway.

Cazithiel wrote:

What worries me is that Cazithiel is an elf with a 10 Con and thus only 15 HP.

noral has not checked in yet but he signed up on the spreadsheet with a L4 cleric. Assuming that's still the case it means two 5s, one 4, two 3s, and one 2 = 22/6 = 3.67 = 4. So we'll definitely be in the 4-5 subtier and 15 HP is dangerously low for that subtier.

Grand Lodge

So how do pregens work?

Thanks for the info, Shadow Dragon.

That'll certainly be a while - My Bard only just earned it! Note his latest feat, although it sounds like you may have been aware of it already - and beyond that, this!

Have you considered Eschew Materials? Grasping corpse is a cool spell, and you could cast it for free that way!

Oh I had my warpriest played with ur bard. I just thinked about Eschew Materials and I realized 100gp could cast Grasping corpse many times but that much money cannot buy one feat.

I'd love to play Rosla El Func, my Slayer 1/uRogue 2, but she's currently in a game that is in the process of wrapping up. I believe we are already in the last encounter, so I hope that game will be finished before this starts.

VARIANT CHANNELING - NEGATIVE ENERGY:

An iconic ability of clerics is their power to channel positive or negative energy, whether for healing, for damage, or to turn or command the undead. However, given the great variety of deities and their divine portfolios, it naturally follows that some deities would endow their mortal servants with the power to channel energies in other ways that more closely mirror their particular focus. The following categories are examples of alternative channeling abilities based on the nature of a deity's power; for example, a fire deity's negative energy channeling may deal fire damage as part of or instead of the damage from channeling. When you create a cleric character, decide whether she uses the standard form of channel energy or a variant presented here based on one aspect of her deity's portfolio. Once this choice is made, it cannot be altered. Variant channeling has the same area of effect, save DCs, uses per day, and other rules relating to channeling energy. Feats and abilities that modify or present alternative uses for channeled energy (such as Command Undead and Turn Undead) work normally with these variant channeling abilities. A variant channeling either modifies positive channeled energy when used to heal or modifies negative energy when used to harm. When using positive energy to heal, affected creatures gain only half the normal amount of healing but also receive a specific beneficial effect. When channeling negative energy to harm, affected creatures take only half the normal damage but take an additional penalty or harmful effect; a successful saving throw negates the additional penalty or effect but does not reduce the damage any further. Creatures that would normally ignore the effect of a particular channel (such as undead with respect to a positive energy channel used to heal) ignore the variant effect of that channel.

• RULERSHIP: Harm—Creatures are dazed for 1 round.

Variant channel breaks down like this:
(for simplicity, 'living' is any creature that is healed by positive energy, while 'undead' is any creature healed by negative energy):
-Channel positive energy to heal, target is living: Gains variant channel 'heal' benefit

-Channel positive energy to harm, target is living: No effect

-Channel positive energy to heal, target is undead: no effect

-Channel positive energy to harm, target is undead: Gains variant channel 'harm' penalty

-Channel negative energy to heal, target is living: No effect

-Channel negative energy to harm, target is living: Gains variant channel 'harm' penalty

-Channel negative energy to heal, target is undead: Gains variant channel 'heal' benefit

-Channel negative energy to harm, target is undead: No effect

Oh, a fellow Ecclesitheurge dipper! :-D

Looking forward to the +2 profane bonus you can dish out! ^_^

Ecclesitheurge wrote:
Blessing of the Faithful (Su): As a standard action, the ecclesitheurge can bless one ally within close range (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels). A blessed ally gains a +2 sacred or profane bonus (depending on whether the ecclesitheurge channels positive or negative energy) on attack rolls, skill checks, ability checks, or saving throws or to AC until the ecclesitheurge’s next turn. The ecclesitheurge can expend 1 use of channel energy when activating this ability to increase the duration to a number of rounds equal to the number of dice of his channel energy.

Dark Archive

"Dipper"??? You've got me all wrong, Saturn may lead with his Witch levels (exclusive Archetype and all), but he is an aspiring Mystic Theurge - something I have NEVER, EVER gotten to see in play!

Liberty's Edge

Well, I believe an Ecclesitheurge is a good one level dip for e.g. a Monk. Both need Wisdom, the vow to forego armor and shields doesn't hinder the combat abilities of the character at all, and the class abilities you get in exchange for that are very helpful and make the monk more versatile.

Have a look at my dwarven monk/cleric Baldrum Battlehand and all his features, especially his domain abilities... ;-)
