This is part of the campaign Silverhex Chronicles where I'll be running my part of this quest series, the quest Webs.

While you are travelling to your next destination, Daggermark, you can try to recall or find out more information about this quest.
For more information about Daggermark:
Daggermark is one of the River Kingdoms. It is an exercise in anarchy, as anyone can hire assassins at affordable rates.

For more information about giant spiders:
Giant spiders are known for their venom, which is known to weaken their prey.

Crowe ask around: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7 and didn't find anything.
Or does he know about Daggermakr already?: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (19) - 1 = 18 Yes, the assassin city of the River Kingdom. Crowe know. Untrained, highest achievable DC 10
Thurgar Ironhead |
"I'd rather deal with the pickpockets than the assassins. Better to lose your wallet than your life," Thurgar says, though the easy going way he's walking suggests he's not too worried about losing either.
GM Kaervek |
Ulisha's mapped route leads you from the outskirts of Daggermark into the Shroudwood to the city’s southeast. As you press further into the depths of the Shroudwood you begin to notice among the changing scenery spider webs linking many of the branches in the upper canopy. It grows dimmer as you progress, with less and less light falling on the forest floor. You soon reach the final point on the map provided by Ulisha, and step into a clearing in the dense wood.
The webs are thicker in this clearing than they have been thus far, appearing newer and white, rather than the dingy gray of those seen earlier. These webs crisscross the canopy above, most strands meeting near the center to support a large globe of webbing the size of a large pumpkin.
I put your tokens on Slide 6. Please feel free to describe your characters actions upon entering the glade. In addition to moving your tokens, please also use arrows to denote the tiles you move through.
GM Kaervek |
Lara? Crowe?
@all: In addition to moving your tokens, please also use arrows to denote the tiles you move through. Thanks!
GM Kaervek |
The group starts moving towards the web ball. So far, nothing unusual has happened.
@all: Perception checks, please, then you can move further.
In addition to moving your tokens, please also use arrows to denote the tiles you move through. Thanks!
GM Kaervek |
Samantha, I need a Perception roll until Wednesday evening, please - otherwise I will bot the roll for you to keep us going. You and Lara can also follow the melee members of the group (or move somewhere else - you are free to decide).
Thurgar and Crowe move a few more steps towards the web ball.
@all: After everyone has rolled once for Perception there are no additional rolls required. If When ;-) something happens I will adjust your position along your movement arrows.
GM Kaervek |
The grippli follows Thurgar and Crowe, looking around for threats.
Everyone can now take another 'move action' - Lara can take two of them to catch up.
Thurgar Ironhead |
Thurgar just keeps moving ahead, the only way a dwarf can: slow and steady.
The way he keeps looking around, his gaze darting from one place to another, suggests that the tension is starting to get to him, though.
GM Kaervek |
The party stays close, following Thurgar who slowly (but steadily) advances towards the ball of web. Nothing happened - yet.
GM Kaervek |
The group continues to press forward toward the glob of webs. Just as Thurgar is about to turn the corner around the fallen tree Lara and Samantha notice almost simultaneously some movement in the upper branches. A tiny flicker of a leg, or maybe light reflecting off an eye, draws their attention upwards where they can now see two giant spiders (one a bit smaller than the other) nestled in various webs 20 feet above the ground. Based on the shadows in the dimly lit canopy it is not hard to see how they managed to stay hidden for so long.

The Eight-Legged Menace! Surprise Round
Samantha: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Crowe: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18
Thurgar: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (9) + 0 = 9
Spider black: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Spider (small) red: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Samantha, Lara, both Spiders act

The spiders are 20 ft above the ground (see my previous post) and burning hands affects only 15 ft, starting at your fingertips... Would you like to change your actions?
GM Kaervek |
Right as Samantha starts to warn her companions, the dark black spider moves a little closer to the group and shoots a wad of sticky web right at Crowe from the upper branches of the canopy. (5-foot-step, attack)
Web from Black, Touch Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
The glob strikes the ground right at Crowe's feet.

GM Kaervek |
Lara? Do you want to do anything?
Also, if Sam wants to act now, she can. The spider is a closer now - I'd rule that with a 5-foot-step Sam is able to hit it with her burning hands spell.
GM Kaervek |
Lara, if you stay where you are, your target will have soft cover (+4 to AC) from Thurgar. Do you want to make a 5-foot-step first (it's allowed in the surprise round) or are you confident that you'll hit when you stay where you are?
GM Kaervek |
Lara's gun goes off with a boom and the well aimed bullet hits the red spider where it really hurts. Nice damage roll! :-)
Samantha is up!
GM Kaervek |
Samantha burns the dark black spider and it screeches in pain!
The red spider, heavily wounded moves a little closer to the group and also shoots a wad of sticky web right at Crowe from the upper branches of the canopy. (5-foot-step, attack)
Web from Red, Touch Attack, range: 1d20 + 7 - 6 ⇒ (16) + 7 - 6 = 17
This time, the sticky substance strikes Crowe directly on the shoulder.
Crowe is Entangled. As a standard action he can make a strength DC 14 or Escape Artist DC 10 check. The web has 2 HP.
The strain of this action was too much for the red spider and it falls, but a trailing line of silk keeps it dangling 5 feet above the ground.
(The small spider only had 8 hp - the exact amount of damage Lara inflicted. Therefore, it was already staggered. As vermin are mindless, I let it attack despite the dire consequences.)

Barely hindered, Crowe swings his earthbreaker at the dangling spider with rage.
"DIE! VERMIN"
Rage, entangled, Furious Focus: 1d20 + 5 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 5 - 2 + 2 = 18
PA, Elemental Strike: 2d6 + 9 + 3 + 1d6 ⇒ (3, 3) + 9 + 3 + (2) = 20
GM Kaervek |
@Crowe: The unconscious red spider is dangling 5 feet above the ground and the black spider is out of your reach, still 15 feet above the ground. As you can only move at half speed (entangled), you cannot both reach and attack the red spider. You can keep the attack and damage rolls for an actual attack later, if you want. What is Crowe doing instead?

Crowe will attack the tree instead with that attack roll and damage if possible trying to knock the web off the tree.
"GET DOWN YOU STUPID SPIDER"GM Kaervek |
Crowe's powerful strike shakes the tree heavily...
Reflex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
...but the black spider manages to hold on to the branches. It moves a bit over and shoots another wad of sticky web right at Thurgar.
5-foot-step (still still 15 feet above the ground), attack
Web from Black, Touch Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
The sticky substance strikes Thurgar directly on his feet.
Thurgar is entangled. As a standard action he can make a strength DC 16 or Escape Artist DC 12 check. The web has 2 HP.
Crowe is also still entangled. As a standard action he can make a strength DC 14 or Escape Artist DC 10 check. The web has 2 HP.
