He then looks at Abebe and says "Don't show them everything this ship can do. If we way outpace them don't show them that. We need to disappear without ever revealing the total capabilities of the ship unless absolutely necessary. We are trying to avoid Imperial entanglements. Fly casual."
Boom then goes and finds someplace to sit.

Abebe is happy when Navarre says on it, "Thanks Navarre, let me know about engineering stuff." Then he goes on saying, "Digger, this is a scout not a racer and I barely know what I'm doing with this ship. If we take off and land and live, it's great."
Wondering if he is the only Navigator on board, Abebe calls out to Cable, "Nice one, Cable but did you pass that Navigation/Astrogation course? Take the Nav station and give me a course or I'll have to do that as well as pilot. Not ideal."

DC 7 (Engineering: Electronics): 2d6 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (4, 2) + 1 + 2 = 9
Chuckling at Abebe calling it 'engineering stuff,' Navarre notices one screen isn't showing reports, he quickly checks the electronics. Once the screen was working he verified they're good to go. Tabbing the radio switch, he reports. "Your screen for the 'thruster plate' should be working now. We've got plenty of 'charge' were good to go."
She that flys
You prep the ship and over the radio you get a message.
”Makers speed”
And the your up and you start to move fast, low dipping behind rock and heading out away from the clan. Your about 2k away when you go vertically up junking this way and that to throw off anyone plotting your course back to where yo left plant.
Once you hit low orbit, you can see the trading ship change course to intercept and start to increase speed, more more than an old Trader should be able to.
”Recalculating interception point with target ship speed, re plotting. We will need to make it to the local astride belt to lose them, ETA time 8 hours at max Burn. Waiting for command.”
If you say yes She that flys exselirates and your pushed back into your web seats, It dose not last long as she hits a speed she seems to be happy with.
”Permission to enter stealth mode”
She asks. She explained that you can use Stealth with main thrusters, you hit speed then glide, with gas thrusters give you some range to alter trajectory.
Looking at the way the other ship is moving its more like a System boat than a trader. Which smacks of system based privateer . It too far away for it to scan you yet, but the way you moved indicates your a more than a scout. You matched it speed and some.
Digger Boom
Boom chimes in over the internal comms, "Do it! Abebe change course as much as practical once we are in stealth mode. We don't want them to be able to predict our course. Might not be a bad idea to change again in a hour or so before we head for where we need to go. Can we track them without giving away our position?"
Monger Abebe *He that flys*
Abebe listens to "She who flys'" announcements and the ensuing "advice" with growing horror. "We can't catch a break, wow." Abebe steels himself and asks a quick questions, "She who flys, can we safely( taking in account we need to have significant Delta V reserves for later maneuvers) alter plot after going to stealth and achieve objectives(like landing) and do you and I (mostly you) have enough skill to do that? Is the Stealth active jamming that will give away our general position or passive in some way really stealthing us?"
He ends this burst with, "Most important what's your advice? I barely know what I'm doing."
Based on what she says, Abebe will either be more horrified or will give permission, but he is responsible for what happens and needs to know.
"Boom Boom, I appreciate you believing I'm Bill the Galactic Hero, but I got my commercial license Today, minimum experience and no military expertise at all. For anything more talk to "She who flys" directly and ask her what she can do."
She that flys
”My stealth systems are both passive and active, Depening on what you wish. Passive in that my hull is hard to dented and when costing there is no ploom. Active and that if we look like someone is targeting us we can try and scalable there talking systems, I suggest we go into the asteroids field and then hide. Wait for them to pass and then run for the jump point.”
Monger Abebe *He that flys*
Abebe, still really worried says,"Okay let do the hide among the rocks in asteroid thing. Passive then on sensors and stealth. See if we can lose them. But was stops them from staking out the jump point and waiting for us to come to them?" Edit: He follows with, "Turn off the transponder, back on to official lawful challenge."
And that is the reason why the canon 3rd Imperium game allows jumps from almost anywhere. But there are ways to work around it.
Navarre "Two-Fingers"
Chuckling at the 'Bill the Galactic Hero' quip, Navarre, resisted the urge to remind Abebe about the comic they had all read when they were younger. Trading hard earned credits for raggedy old comics, of course Abebe wasn't Bill, he was a heroic Varg space adventurer.
As it seemed that the ship had gone passive, Navarre shifted around in his web seat, asking, "Is it save for me to unhook and start checking gauges? 'She that flies' anything you want me to take a look at?"
Navarre "Two-Fingers"
"Got it." Answering She that flys' Navarre undoes the harness on his web seat. Lowering first his right booted foot and then his second, he makes sure the magnetic soles are operating before he stands up out of the web seat. Tabing the switch on his radio, "Abebe, I'm checking life support and looking at those filters, give me a minute notice before we're doing anything fancy so I can return to my webbing.
As he steps, he makes sure the forward foot has 'caught' the floor before he releases the second foot, just like they'd trained in zero G. Once he makes it to the panel with the filters, he checks the gauges there to see how efficiently they were working.

As you get to the jump point, the powerplant, kicks in and for an instant the ship moves faster than light.
You remember watching the talk hyperspace drives.
The old looking teacher stands in front to a backboard.
"The theory is complicated and we will be teaching this but the basics are simple. The H drive makes path thrugh Nspace for a ship to jump from one location to another. fast than light, but here is the rub. Time still passes in Nspace as it dose in real space. Your moving fast yes but a jump can take weeks to complete. Its always risky. 1 in 10,000 jumps go bad. Gravity wells have a way of beings flight paths so plotting a safe root is key. In this class we will learn about maininging jump drives and platting Hayer space roots."
Nathan "Cable" Grey
Boom look at the galatic maps with the others and asks, "She that Flys, how did you get into our system? I'm no navigator but the way I read the map you need at least two jumps that are longer than you are rated for."
If I remember correctly, there was a "pump & jump" principle that said you could basically fuel the ship's jump fuel need directly from a gas giant, leave your fuel stores full, do a jump-1, arrive 1 parsec away, deplete your fuel stores, and then do your second jump-1. The kicker with that was the extra time it took (1 week per jump), but that was also a cool aspect of "downtime" for traveller. May not apply here in the Rock-Verse, but that was the gist of how it worked in the old days.
Navarre "Two-Fingers"
So we are in hyperspace one week, how much of that time is actually doing out 'job' on the ship? How much of that time can we work on prepping things.
Keeping an eye on screens, gauges and dials, Navarre is relieved when they finally make the jump to hyperspace. Wanting to get ahead of a few things, he walks forwards to where the others are getting out of their chairs. "It feels like there may be a real chance that we'll need to defend ourselves in the very near future."
Turning to Stf's hologram. "She that flies', how long will it take to alter the weapons, armor and vacc suits we found to human and Varg size?"
And what kind of rolls do you need for the three different types of items?
GM_Panic
You would be expected to monitor systems all the time on a jump. With a walk around 2 to 3 times a day. That is local systems checks. So someone needs to be on the flight deck all the time, with someone doing the around very 12 or 8 hours.
Note there is a think called Hyperspace sickness, just dont look out the windows. The main flight decks blast shields come down auto on jump.
Monger Abebe *He that flys*
Abebe blinks wondering how the jump took place, his memory of the past few minutes a little fuzzy from the stress. He then looks at the destination, looks at the minimum number of Jump ones and minimum number of double jumps and is horrified. With a loud voice Abebe sends the information to the others, saying, "This is terrible, where we are going is so very far and not easy. Our information is limited and out of date but this... I don't see how we can do it so so many jumps, with no money to start we are under capitalized." Abebe facepalms wonder how he got into this mess.
Navarre "Two-Fingers"
Nodding as Stf comments about a 3d printer, Navarre mentally starts running through the hours. How often he'd need to do a walk around, and when he'd need to take his turn 'on deck.'
Turning towards Abebe, Navarre raises an eyebrow. He wasn't sure how their pilot could think this was terrible, he was a getting to pilot an Aslan scout ship, that was as good as a flying a 'fighter' in Navarre's mind. Navarre smiled to himself, and he was able to work in the engine room of a real ship with a holographic AI, instead of the air vents back in the shaft. They had dreamed of this when they were studying the ancient texts, dreaming of space now here they were.
Realizing Abebe had some real concerns, Navarre looked first to Boom, and then to Cable, finally he looks back to Abebe "I don't know enough about navigation to help with that. You and Cable and 'She that flys' will need to sort it out. But she did get here so we know it's possible to get back."
Shrugging, "As for making money, if we could survive on 'The Rock' salvaging, then with this beautiful ship, we should be able to make do here in the great wide open."
Having a little better understanding of what they would need to do to modify the 'Aslan' equipment, Navarre asks. "I figure since we have our own Vacc suits, the Aslan suits can wait. But we still need to modify the weapons and armor." He looks to Cable and Boom. "What do you two think, lazers properly fitted or armor plates properly fitted first?"
Digger Boom
Boom sighs and shakes his head, Always with the negative waves Abebe. Boom then smiles and says Always look on the bright side of life Abebe!" He whistles a little tune and then continues "We are on our own. In an awesome Aslan scout ship. We'll figure it out. Now I can string together a route but that map means nothing to me. If I knew what was in each system I might be able to help plot a profitable route. We don't have to take the shortest route as that might not be profitable. While we don't have credits we do have 15 tons of silver and titanium. Mostly titanium."
Monger Abebe *He that flys*
Abebe sighs saying, "You'll are right about me looking only at the downside, but lack of information bothers me the most. We're going in real blind and without money. We can't even buy the info we need right now. And we have had no time to think or really talk at all. What was it, just three days ago we finished our shifts poked at a old device and everything changed? We need to look at the updates that we got but I'm not sure about their reliability."
Continuing, he lists what he thinks is important, "Okay we need to go over what info we have, and what we need. Set up schedule for ship operations. See how much endurance we have. And we are minors, yeah of course we are be break rock all time. You know what I mean, can we sign a binding contract?"
A thought strikes him and he turns to our favorite hologram, "She who flys, in accessing your files on flight regulations, as the only pilot on board, am I required to be captain?" He does not look happy at the thought.
Turning to Navarre, Abebe responds, "Yeah, Two-fingers, the ship can make it, I'm not worried about that. But the last captain was rich, he might even have owned that base. We are not rich, we'll see I guess."
As Dig chimes in, Abebe smiles and says, "Yeah, Digger, I have you guys to be all everything's great, but your right I should look to our advantages. Yeah, now does this system need those rocks? And sure, I doubt the shortest way will always be the best way but it's a good first look."
Turning back to the image of she who flys, Abebe asks, "Show what we know of our destination system along with the time of the updates of data, please."
She that flys
"As my bonded crew, your rolls are for you to decide. I have transferred 1 ship share to each of you and you would each have an ID as ships owners, with the other 94 shares being help by my past owners house. As part owners of this ship you will be legally classed as Adults and crew. You can sign contracts if you ether all sign or delegate voting rites to one of you. I will vote with you agreed accuse of action in most casses. As default votee for the mine share holder, my old masters house. We have agreed to forgo profit share based on ship-shares as a % of shares. And agrree to a crew even share based on number of shares. With would be 1/5 for each of is, of all profits and legitimate liabilities."
She brings up 600 year old map showing the target system and the Alsan houses based there. One of which is the "Ones who Fine" Alsan sub house which was the last owners. They seem VERY well off and he was the patriarch with his son, who was by all accounts inchagre of the minding base and who the ships old master was looking for.
As you look over the house info and its culture you note something odd, A disgraced Ancestor as punishment is placed in Cryo-sleep. It seem the last owner was trying to fall to this fate when his son deserted the out post with the others Aslan. he may have known this was a one way trip to get away form that shame.
Monger Abebe *He that flys*
1 person marked this as a favorite.
Abebe listens to the report on their legal status from their host, "Okay we're adults, enough anyway, and anybody can be Captain so, Navarre, would you like to job of being responsible for this crew of rapscallions?" He also looks over any data on system the particularly looking for how much demand there is for the cargo they are carrying.
"Oh and I'd would go for armor over weapons because I don't know how to use any guns, but I'll support your judgement whatever you chose."
Navarre "Two-Fingers"
Raising an eyebrow at Abebe's question about being captain, Navarre quickly shakes his head 'no' "I'm an Engineer, don't want to be anything else."
As he looks at his friends, Abebe is clearly the smartest and his family was the most 'socially' connected. But he was the least educated, just barely finishing flight school, while he and Cable and Boom had finished several other classes. Boom had taken the call to mining very seriously and focused on that. Cable had spread his training out more and had developed into a competent if not gifted leader. Having thought about it for a moment, he nods towards Cable "I nominate Cable." He smiles a wolfish smile, "If we're his crew it will motivate him to make sure we don't die."
Deciding Abebe was right about the armor, he looks towards Boom, "What do you think Boom, you want to help me alter the armor first?"
Monger Abebe *He that flys*
Abebe nods at Navarre's refusal, with a touch of resignation, Not surprised I don't want it either and yes Cable's the next best. Abebe brightens and says, "Second for Cable for Captain then, all in favor say aye! Aye!" Abebe pumps his fist.
Abebe says, "I can help Navarre, but how about after lunch? If Dig spells me on the bridge, I'll rustle the grub up and do the welding where you tell me."
This inventory pings up and looking Abebe remarks, "Quite an arsenal, I can use a shock rod and maybe a sword if not too big."

"You know, we could learn a lot from this ... from this ship, from her culture, from this journey. You know none of this HAS to be done, right? It's just a dead guy's sword. There is no reason to travel light years from our home for this."
Cable looks at all of them, "Right?"
He stands up and takes a deep breath, "or is there?"
"Is it possible that there is a little more to life, and specifically OUR lives than The Rock? Is it possible that we could be meant to be part of the larger universe and not just angling all day to get to that pit and have a drink? Part of me feels like there is. Part of me feels like honour is real now, more than ever. Like what is at stake is higher than we ever dreamed. But long before there was a SPACEship, the was FRIENDship, and none of you should ever mistake that it has been and always shall be my destiny to "make sure you don't die"
Nathan seems think for a moment, and then laughs a little at himself, "and who am I kidding? If the job comes with a bedroom and an office, I am all over it!"
Monger Abebe *He that flys*
"Great speech Captain! But he seems to have something to say.
Abebe says, "That's great Cable, I'm glad you want the job, you did take those leadership classes. Just thought Navarre winning the platinum medal for first in class, and you so hot for medicine, well he was first thought. No one in there right mind would want me, tops in aptitude tests, but well, not exactly the bottom of the classes, always, but it was made clear to me by (sigh) a lot of people I was slacker of the year, every year. Never could focus much on any one thing. Did the flight school hoping that would engage me, but by the end it was 'what's the point', you know? It really bothered me that regs might require me to be captain, but now that I stop to think, it might apply only to large liners or something like that. So I fear the consequences of being Captain Slacker." Abebe finishes gloomily.
Abebe brightens again, saying, "But Captain Cable you have the fun job of kicking my behind into action. I had ideas on what I should do but - orders Sir!" Abebe salutes badly but doesn't bother getting up from his sprawl on the pilot seat.
Nathan "Cable" Grey
"Well here is the secret I'm not sure is out yet: only ships require captains, teams absolutely do not. So while I could agree to the designation of Captain, and we could log it into our transpander & legal data, it doesn't mean that I would want or need to be in charge of the team. Teams tend to flouish with leadership, not hierarchy."
He smiles again, the smile everyone has come to associate with his cheekier thoughts.
"Even if I were Captain of the team, I would not be giving orders, I would be 'suggesting courses of action' ..."
"So no orders, but my first suggestion would be that we address tailoring in parallel; while I am enthusiastic about having the laser pistols humanized, I think we need to do the same to our flight control consoles and other system interfaces. While both you & I were able to engage and be effective on the bridge, those consoles are not meant for beings like us. Let's fix that. I will do the same in the Med Bay and Computer Centre while Navarre is taking care of Engineering and the weapons."
"I also want to make sure that you share the ideas you had before we begin; while I think the console adaptations are important, possibly we can prioritize some other tasks first, especially if they are faster to complete. Let's hear it 'Mister' Adebe."

Gets a real bed in the Sick bay.
So now you all have your own space.
The captains room, main space is made into a ready room.
I have also added the Belly ramp Airlock and Storage [Cargo hold]
GM_Panic
The week passes and you settle in,
but soon She they Flys tells you that you getting to then end of your Jump. You take your seats and get ready,
If you wish to do something before you come out of jump please feel free to post
You feel that sinking feeling as you come out of hyperspace and the blast covers roll up showing you views out of the window of Yakolev systems blue Giant sun and its companion Yellow Dwarf (main Sequence).
You pick up the astrogation Bacon that tells you it has Excellent Starport. Tech Level 12, Law Level, High, open carry prohibited,
System Government (Balkanisation),
Main world Atmos slightly caressive, life underground. Main Space port. Second world no Atmost, Ice covered with under ice sea, Mining and Aquaculture.
System population 7.4 Mil.
Safe system, All Known races can visit for trade, Main population Sol Human.
System Jump tax 1500Cr,
Docking Charge: 3000Cr
Docked Basic maintenance: 2500Cr
Refuel costs refined H2O per tone Cr250x30t= 7500Cr
"Have a nice day"
Astrogation/Nav check to find out just where you are in system,
You also get a list of local commodity prices, and can work out what your cogo is worth. Turns out there is a need for radioatiove ore and the price looks good. Selling just the that ore would bet you 55,000Cr, The silver and gold is low, they have a lot here, so only 35,000Cr and the Titanium again low 80,000Cr Giving a total of 170,000Cr in the ships bank if you sell it all.
Your 100T Free Trader looks to run 77,500 creds a month in maintenance, and life support costs. Plus fuel and landing fees (although with scoops and a fuel processor, it's possible to bypass fuel costs). Obviously, There is no ship lone to play, and your ship shares would reduce that if their was.
So making money you find out form the local bacon.
Pure Freight pays 1k per ton. At the 1 Jump per 1 week schedule that allows time for picking up cargo and making deals, that's for short run freight hauls a month. Jump to next system jump.
You have 15 tones on Cargo space, If a full cargo hold. You get 15x5 = 60k, So your 100T Free Trader - assuming it can somehow find enough freight loads that completely and exactly fill the hold (ie, not likely) - is just barely short of its break even point on Freight. So just freight running doesn't seem worthwhile on its own. OTOH, a lot of other crews probably won't have the money to fill up 15 tons with speculative goods or whatever. Freight is a way to make some money off cargo space you can't use another way.
Now Passengers seem similarly hard. Each stateroom is running you over 1k a month between the cost of the room applied its life support cost. Using i jump x4 trips a month, charging 3k per jump per person, [You have one spear room with a bunk bed] you can make [3x2]x4k = 20k off two high passages in the one spear stateroom. Note each passenger gets 1/2 ton of cargo for the Trip. If you had low Berths, You can charge 1000Cr per trip.
Now Mail: pays 5k per ton. When available, it seems worth worth it.
So your always just braking even on a full ship with full cargo and 2 paying passengers.
Systems Brokers: Finding one and paying one is pretty much always worth it,
They know the jobs that pay more, the Cargo that has to be there on time, the passengers who pay more for no questions asked. That risky cargo that has to be there on time. Brokers can charge anything form 5% to 20% depending.
If a PC has the broker skill they can get that down, with a roll.

Pre-destination
"Sure Cable, I check the galley so we can eat something, I know a bit about keeping VIPs happy. After checking life support, I think i'd let the Chief Engineer decide what's most important to deal with or offer options better than I can. Also I need to get type checked on this beautiful but really different craft so I can react without needed to grab a manual if a fight uhm I mean flight emergency comes up. Won't have much ideas about what to do in our destination until we get there." Abebe replies.
Abebe has She Who Flys explain the advanced galley to him and tries using his training in personal service to prepare acceptable meals, for the crew. Otherwise he helps out as he can.
After Jump
"Oh Captain want to make the nav check while I see about what the local market conditions are?"
Abebe reads over the local information, and makes sure it's routed to the whole crew. "Okay we, should sell the rad ore but wait and see if we can obtain outsystem info before commiting on the rest." Abebe laughs at the planetary report, "Someone's pulling a goof, or that beacon is in serious need of maintenance, a caressive atmosphere sounds nice but I'm pretty sure that's not what they meant."
I don't point fingers at typos, make plenty myself, but the auto correct of corrosive to caressive is hilarious.
Abebe turns to She who flys and asks, "About the System Jump fee is that levied inbound or outbound or both? Can we find out? And it is there somewhere legal we can get to for free water, and refine it ourselves, and if not is it for legal or practical reasons?"
"Okay Captain, I'll need to do some research to see if we can get a sale of our or without a local broker, but I need to check if transshipping costs or borne by the buyer or seller and if we either save or get a bonus if we can make delivery ourselves. Given the main planets atmosphere, I think we might want dock highport rather than low, unless there is a large difference in fees or delivery costs. Have to be close in or wait a bit for lightspeed lag, depending on where we are."

Earlier conversation
Nodding to Boom and Abebe, Navarre waits to see if Cable accepts the nomination. Raising an eyebrow when the newly appointed captain asks if they really needed to escort 'she that flies' on her journey. Relieved when Cable said 'honor is real now' and their friend accepts the position of Captain. Nodding in agreement. "Ok, I'll start working on the 'Flash' armor between shifts on the bridge and making sure everything in engineering is 'human' size."
Through the week
Spending his extra time working on the four Aslan armors, Navarre also takes his turn on the bridge and helping with the galley. Though prefers others cooking to his own. At the end of the sixth day he's able to show the others the resized armor and asks, "Do we want to wear the armor under or over the vacc suits?"
arriving in port
After strapping himself into the web chair, Navarre Hearing that they were coming out of hyperspace, prepares himself for the still new sensation. Relieved to hear the blast doors had opened properly, he begins to read about the system they entered. Looking through the other information he asks, "Abebe if we take on passengers, would be comfortable playing 'steward' for them?"
As he unstraps the webbing, he adds, "I'll focus on overhaling the life support. First I'll see if we need anything new then begin searching where to find it and what it will cost. That way when we head to town I'll be able to pick up anything we need."
He will check the life support for what they may need and what he can over hall without new equipment.

taking eight hours a day for one week, means he should be able to alter all four suits of armor in six days with four rolls.

You need new water and air scrubbers, and there is a brake down in the sinks. After half an hour of letter you get pinged by system port.
"Greetings, She that Flys Welcome to the Yakolev system. Err your transponder seems to be very old but checks out. Sending current standard transponder protocols please update. Now then file your nature of your business from. and send over your flight path once you get past the second set of transponders. And remember to pay the jump tax before departing, Have a nice day She that flys."
And the single clocks off.

Navarre "Two-Fingers" your work is good and you all have upper body flash armor. Also as you check the ship you find a few more things that need to be fixed, working on local costs you thing is al going to cost around Cr120,000 to get the ship fully back to working order. time wise your looking at two weeks in space doc to do the work. You know there may be a way to get the costs down, as there is a space junk yard near a moon of the main habited planet. You could find a few parts there.
As you all head in the Adds start, coming theses are for local services and a few are from local agents.

As you talk of nicknames for She that flys, when you say AYA she says
"I have to say I like AYA very much, AYA is the name of a famous Aslan worrier princess. "Aya, Swift blade" She saved her clan at a critical moment in a battle. She rode an Niroc beast thought enemy lines and took the head of appeasing Clans commoner. Throwing the enemy into disarray and changing outcome of the battle and war for her side. She was said my old master was a descendent."

Placing back the most recent of feels like a hundred maintenance panels, a distracted Abebe says in responds to Narrave's question, "Have a problem ... Oh you mean taking care of VIP's; not at all I was trained for that that. It's what us Mongers are all about, make the deals by making the dealmakers happy. I have a couple of reservations about taking passengers, though. For one, this ship is very nice but small and already a bit crowded. Between my limited experience and that I'm not sure we can provide the full array of space and services that VIP's would expect for the full value of High passage. Also no real separation between us and the passengers could have issues. So if we want to take passengers at all maybe only take for middle passage, less expectations put on us."
Abebe receives the messages from the the systems port control. Passes along to "She who Flys" and the Captain, "I presume there will be no problem is updating the protocols, so I do recommend doing so at the earliest opportunity Captain Cable, your call though."
As soon as he can Abebe tries to see if he can get any connection to the systems datahub closely following any protocols available to him. Mostly talking ot himself but vaguely directed at the ship, he says, "Not a huge pop here for such a nice looking starport, suggests a lot of through trade. Like to get an idea of connection systems commodity prices, if available for low or no cost." Abebe tries to find, call on anyones' computer use expertise, information from trade organizations, TAS or it's like or commerce agencies. Also any updates on starcharts and including current social, political, economic, and trade status that is more up-to-date then whatever we have. Have She who flys also check any Aslan language or otherwise relevant information for similar data or any of interest to her.
