Eando Kline stands in his pavilion tent, rubbing his beard and looking at a sketched map of the cyclopean city of Min- Khadaim pinned to a table. Wooden markers indicate digs in progress, sites of interest, and potential threats. He looks up, his brow furrowed in thought.
“Ah, Pathfinders. How good of you to come on such short notice. We are in need of your expertise. Please, sit down.” He gestures to two benches on either side of the table. “It is good to see you. Our mission into Iobaria has recently changed. While we’ve had expeditions into these lands before, with the Society back to strength it is now time to explore this frontier once more. At least, we thought it was, but no sooner had we begun than one of the Decemvirate was abducted by a demonic figure. We need to do further research to understand what may have caused this—we need to uncover the history of Koloran, the nation that once thrived here, far from the Ghol-Gan empire in Garund. Vigilant Seal members have been going around the city, inventorying sites of interest. We have begun excavating the entrance to an underground complex, led by fire iconography at surface ruins.”
Eando points to the location on the map. “A team has been making good progress widening the entrance here for easy access, but they discovered a number of bones in the neighboring room, some quite fresh. These ruins are clearly not as abandoned as they first appeared to be. I need you to go to the site, thoroughly explore the ruins, and report back with anything you discover. Cyclops is a fairly obscure language, and it has changed somewhat since the days of Koloran, so I’ll be sending you with translation assistance.” He pulls a small book, handing it over with a satisfied nod.
“Any questions?”

Martin's Nature (T): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Raj and Martin know a little bit about Iobaria. Iobaria is home to a rare species of highly flammable conifer pine known as bruorsivi, also known as blood pine. The forest had always been prone to brief, intense fires that burned out naturally or were contained by elf druids as well as centaur sages. In early 4719 AR, a massive fire swept through Iobaria’s Finadar Forest. This fire, fueled by the magic of an incomplete cyclopean ritual, was inadvertently activated by a small community of goblins living in the skeletal remains of an old draconic graveyard.
Initially unknown to the inhabitants of the Finadar Forest and their allies in the Pathfinder Society, far more damage had been done by cyclopean relics than was immediately apparent. These relics caused horrific scars and lingering Abyssal pollution to infect many of the innocent nature spirits that called the Finadar Forest home. Druids and other wielders of primal magic attempted to commune with these spirits, but eventually it was the Pathfinders who managed to cleanse the spirits of their Abyssal corruption.

A small gnome peers over the edge of the table.
"Cyclopes are interesting." they note in passing, before getting distracted by the maps. They are drably dressed and look rather pale... too pale for someone who is about to be doing some serious exploring.
"So... no signs of recent cyclops activity then?" they ask. "But something has lefts the remains of their dinner in the area, and you want us to find out if they are a risk to the exploration team?"

![]() |

A little goblin grins as he looks a the map. He wears a brown robe and leather shoes, and his only visible weapon is a dagger at his belt. He tries to look more sober given the news of danger and disaster, but his excitement about the opportunity to explore a new place is almost tangible--oddly enough, literally.
"You think it might be dangerous because there are fresh bones, but are they fresh people bones or from animals?"
He frowns and points at the book. "And is that the translation assistance? Not an interpreter?"

![]() |

A tall, muscular man sits uncomfortably on the low bench, trying to fit his legs somewhere. He patiently listens through Kline's story, keeping his eyes on the map.
"Cyclops. Sounds dangerous. Has any such creatures been seen here?" he asks, voice thick in Vudran accent.
And the book... That is not going to help him understand nor fight cyclops. He looks at the gathered group - if there was someone more academically aligned among them.

![]() |

A blue gnome, his head and eyes conspicuously large for his frame, looks over to the goblin.
"This book must be intelligent indeed, to know what we need."
His smirk belies an attitude of playful sarcasm.
"And surely, having Koloran do incredibly far from Ghol-Gan must be astoundingly bizarre. It's not like a race with half the size could possibly be found carving out nations in both places, no?"
Leaping onto his seat and crouching, he turns to Eando Kline and finishes, "But back to the mission. So a Decemvirate member has been kidnapped by demons. And yet, you state that this is the work of long-dead cyclopes. I love leaps of fancy! What, pray tell, has convinced you to take this one?"

![]() |

"So... no signs of recent cyclops activity then?" they ask. "But something has lefts the remains of their dinner in the area, and you want us to find out if they are a risk to the exploration team?"
"Not for some time now." Eando Kline nods. "You have it correct."
"You think it might be dangerous because there are fresh bones, but are they fresh people bones or from animals?"
“The site of interest is nothing more than a few walls and rubble, but has a staircase leading down into a much wider room. The staircase was partially blocked, so when one of the team finally got a good look inside using a lantern, they saw bones. Both old and new. We don’t know what is down there; hence, we’re pulling back the archaeologists and sending you in until we’re certain the site is secure.”
"And is that the translation assistance? Not an interpreter?" "This book must be intelligent indeed, to know what we need."
"I wouldn't say intelligent and an actual interpretor for the cyclopean age is much more difficult to find. This book is a record of the words and phrases we’ve translated so far in this site. It should be helpful in piecing together the meaning of any text you encounter.”
"But back to the mission. So a Decemvirate member has been kidnapped by demons. And yet, you state that this is the work of long-dead cyclopes. I love leaps of fancy! What, pray tell, has convinced you to take this one?"
“Yes. The Decemvirate,” he grimaces, “decided that the time was ripe for a new campaign, plunging us into the wild, flammable, and monster-infested forests of Iobaria, venturing to the edges of the Inner Sea to seek out secrets long-buried. Very noble and all. Would look good on a poster. This city, Min-Khadaim, was identified and chosen as a base of operations. That... didn’t really go as planned. We uncovered more than we bargained for, and a demonic figure has disappeared with a member of the Decemvirate, leaving only their mask behind.”
★ -- ★ -- ★ -- ★
With few more questions Eando ushers you out of the tent and towards the structure.
The ruins of Min-Khadaim are bustling with activity. Pathfinders clear debris from streets, shore up walls, and cart rubble out. Down one of the smaller streets is a cordoned-off area, containing a nondescript building. Two figures are busy loading dirt into a cart. When approached, they wipe their palms on their trousers and shake hands with you. "Name's Daanaand this is Jaci." She motions to a male junior Pathfinder. They enthusiastically show you around a ruined building. There is a hallway, small by cyclops standards, and a larger space beyond it. "We are a part of the archaeological team excavating the area. Hopfully once you clear out the area we can get a little further in." Danna points to the floor at a dust covered mosiac. "We uncovered this a few weeks ago. This is what initially drew us to this building." She places her hands on her hips and sighs deeply, wiping sweat and dust from her forehead. "The building doesn't look like anything special but a mosiac like this is expensive and takes time." She holds her hand next to some of the tiny tiles for comparison. “Imagine a cyclops with such big hands laying these tiny tiles? Either they put in a lot of work, or smaller creatures were the ones to lay them!”
The uncovered part of the mosaic depicts curling flames.
As you ready yourselves to go down, Daana and Jaci take a few steps back, "Anyways, we wont hold you up. Good luck down there."

![]() |

"Wait... a member of the decemvirate has vanished and left their mask behind?" asks Slipp, slightly more interested now.
"How might... we identify them... if we were to come across them?"
-=-=-=-
At the ruins.
Slipp looks at the mosaic with interest. "Did Cyclops use slaves? " they ask, nobody in particular. "I too find it hard to believe a giant could do something this small and detailed.."

![]() |

"Yeah probably," says Zibini casually, "but it doesn't have to be slaves. That's not the only way to get people to make stuff for you. Besides, human-size people make art with teeny beads. If they can do that, I don't think these tiles are impossible for clycopes, just difficult."

![]() |

At about this moment, an unusual humanoid with complex patterns of light blue energy on his swarthy skin catches up with you. Greetings. Impulse-7. I was sent to reinforce your group. Information about our mission has already been uploaded, ready to act. He speaks so dryly that it could even be taken as disrespect, but most likely it's something else.
Together with Impulse-7, another creature, or rather a construct, is summoned. Those of you who have read books about Numeria understand that this is a so-called "robot". They both have the same octagon-shaped symbol burning blue on their chests, which, in the case of an Impulse-7, shines through even his clothes.

![]() |

Enforcer 571-294 is here. The voice sounds muffled and slightly hoarse (in the future, they would say, like a walkie-talkie covered with a copper bucket). Robot examines you for a few seconds, moving the camera in the middle of the head (replacing his eyes and making him look like a cyclops) to each of you. New allies have been fixed and added to the "allies" list, the "protection" folder. The research mode is activated. The battle mode is paused. The "dataphil" protocol has been launched.

![]() |

Raj nods to the android in greeting, then turns back to the mosaic.
"Could be slaves. Or hired labor. Or magic." the man shrugs. "Looks like it depicts flames. Any idea what it means? Were the forests burning already back when... when this was made?" Raj knows these ruins are old, but how old exactly..?
Then he looks around. "Oh, where are the bones?"

![]() |

A middle-aged human, accompanied by his eidolon greets the group. "Greetings. Sorry for my tardiness. I am Martin. And this is Mavenee," He gestures to his eidolon which looks like a cross between a walrus, a lion, and a bull.
"I have to say, this isn't the first time I've cleared entrances to complex cave systems. Our previous assignment in Doskar's Crag was such a delight because of the many discoveries we've uncovered. Looks like this assignment is as promising as ever."
He then examines the mosaic with the curling flames.

![]() |

Two summoners meet eyes, but it is extremely difficult to understand what exactly is on the android's mind and what feelings he is experiencing. Greetings to you. Meanwhile, the robot reports that two more allies have been added to the list of allies.

![]() |

"Further down that tunnel." Danna points and you begin making your way down there as you continue introductions.
The corridors in the ruins are 10 feet wide and 15 feet high. The rooms are 20 feet high. A damaged stone stairway leads downward. The steps are high, clearly made for something much larger than the average human. The room at the bottom is dark, and a musty smell hangs in the air. One section of the room contains numerous shelves and barrels, while a channel fifteen feet below the main room holds crates. The entire room is littered with pieces of clay, loose stones, and scattered bones.
Who has what for light sources as it is dark down here.

![]() |

Slipp peers into the gloomy passage, apparently unaware of the gloom.
They sniff, trying to gauge whether there is a fresh dead-thing down there or not.
"I suppose it is best we go in.." mutters the gnome. They offer a bow to the newly heavily armoured arrivals. "After you."
Slipp has darkvision.

![]() |

Feeling the excitement of discovery, Zibini unleashes four lights that swirl around the room, helping the part see and perhaps startling anything lurking there.
Zibini has dancing lights as a Psi Cantrip, meaning he can ignore the restrictions on where the lights go. But it's sustained so we can't rely on it for ongoing lighting.
He has a wayfinder, but won't light it unless asked because he also has Darkvision.

![]() |

"Right, before we go down there..."
Zibini draws out a scroll and unfurls it. He doesn't read it, exactly, but traces the feelings of protectiveness and safety left by the hand that wrote it. For a moment he almost seems to be wearing armor.
"Okay!" He shoves the spent scroll back into his pocket, "Let's go!"
Using his school item: scroll of mage armor. Reflected in my stat line.

![]() |

With magical spells of light illuminating all around the room it casts shadows into all of the corners. Slowly walking in, none of the dead seem to rise, much to your relief.
Peering through the darkness you spot what appears to be a crab-like creature hiding in the debris in the center of the chamber, which is motionless, possibly asleep or otherwise incapacitated.

![]() |

"Do you think it is alive? Or just a statue?" ponders Slipp.
The little gnome grabs a pebble and makes to throw it at the creature, it see if it moves or not. But pauses incase someone has a better plan.

![]() |

Raj is grateful for the light the magic-users have conjured for the benefit of the party. He keeps his bow ready in hand as the group ventures deeper into the tunnel, and stops upon sighting the crab-like creature.
Seeing Slipp judging the distance with a pebble in their hand, the ranger motions them to wait. He takes a few steps closer, trying to see if there's any movement at all.

The group watches and waits in anticipation as Raj slips closer and closer to the crab. It doesn't seem to move at all. Martin decides to command Mavenee in to sniff and examine what is happening.
Getting closer Mavenee realizes this crab-like creature is little more than a husk with some near invisible filament wrapped around it.
When still much smaller, a cave fisher crawled into this room looking for shelter. At first it fed on vermin, and as it grew larger, on foxes and other scavengers that were drawn by the scent of the bones. Eventually the cave fisher grew too big to be able to leave the room.

Martin's Nature (T): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Martin protects Mavenee and recognizes these creatures as cave fishers.
A cave fisher eats just about any live prey smaller than itself, though anything smaller than a rat isn't much of a meal for it. When a cave fisher captures such a creature, it often leaves the hapless animal entangled, using it as bait to attract larger creatures. Because the adhesive on its filament doesn't last long, the fisher frequently needs to eat one filament and excrete a new one. The filaments are translucent and can be hard to see when they're still and in darkness.
Cave fishers hatch with the ability to excrete filaments, but they molt many times before reaching their adult size of about 7 feet long and 400 pounds. They often leave shed shells in conspicuous locations as decoys.
Boosted Enforcer 571-294 takes a step forward and is ready to pummel some crustateans.
The red cave fishe skuttles out of its cover and Raj's arrows fling right past it. Miss, miss. It sends a strand of sticky filament into the eidolon.
