The smoke never really coalesced fully into a cloud. You don't see any response in the distance.

You have four sets of leather armor for the goblins, assuming someone collects from the goblin warrior bodies. There is a pile of gear in the western tower.

GM Screen:

Since Isandra is explicitly keeping her eyes on the Goblins, she easily spots them trying to pocket the two Alchemist's Fire that the Shaman had been carrying.

She also finds a potion in the pile of debris.

In summary, between the bodies and the pile of old gear you find:
Two Potions (which can be identified with Spellcraft, Craft(Alchemy) or the one that everyone forgets, perception)
2 Alchemist's Fire
4 sets of gear from the Goblin Warriors: leather armor, light wooden shield, short sword, short bow with 20 arrows
Other Gear from the Shaman: dagger, light crossbow with 10 bolts, wooden holy symbol (of ?)

Isandra shakes her head as she takes the alchemist fire.
"Sorry. That's not allowed. If there's need for that, we will tell you. Let's get you a bit more protected." she will look for any food these tower goblins had to give it to her goblins as well.

She turns to her companions. "Would anyone want my sling for the moment? I'm not that good with ranged weapons but have other options to fight at a distance. This is better in the hands of someone with more dexterity than me."

Once the goblins have don the armor she's ready to go. She will continue to stick to them to keep them out of trouble.

As you move along

With the rough hills now far to the north, the land opens into a broad grassland where the snow is much sparser. The sky is overcast and the temperature has risen, making the march south somewhat easier. For as far as the eye can see, there is nothing but open ground and great fir trees that dot the landscape.

Khon'Ur recognizes a major snowstorm is coming, and that you should start preparing a camp as soon as
possible.

Setting up camp requires another Survival Check. This time one of you should be the lead and others may assist. Setting up camp will take about an hour.

The goblin prisoners are unhelpful in setting up camp. Instead they either argue with each other or mock the party members doing all the work. They are also making motions toward the food, as if they want to eat it all tonight.

A diplomacy check can help keep the Goblins out of the way and out of the food.

Fortunately, Khon'Ur spotted the storm with enough notice that there is additional time to set up camp before the storm hits.

Mechanically, each attempt to set up camp takes an hour, and because Knon'Ur spotted the storm with the first Survival check, you get a second hour to try to set up camp before the storm hits and you have to make Fortitude saves.

The Goblins are still not helping, but at least they are not in the way, and aren't trying to eat all the food immediately.

Isandra finds a rare snowbloom flower growing near the campsite.

A strange event occasionally occurs in the Irrisen wilderness. A mysterious flower that resembles a pale blue daffodil blooms in the snow and wilts as soon as the snow stops falling. If plucked during the storm, the flower instantly turns to delicate, non-magical crystal. Herbalists speculate that the flowers are a sign of the land itself resisting Baba Yaga’s magic. They are thus considered sacred in the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, and are prized by art collectors everywhere. The jadwiga, however, consider the flowers detestable weeds to be destroyed on sight, and trafficking in them is punishable by death. The value of a bloom depends on its quality when plucked; blooms are more plentiful at lower temperatures and their quality is higher.

On your chronicle sheet

The rest of the night passes uneventfully.

The next morning you travel on to Harvest's End

The village of Harvest’s End is a quiet place. Traveling merchants in colorful garb are easily distinguished from the locals, who dress in woolen clothes of drab browns, greens, and grays. There are no sounds of laughter or play here. Fishermen put their catch out for display, while others congregate in small groups and whispered conversations. Smoke rises from the chimneys of uniform but well-constructed buildings, most of which are surrounded by small white picket fences.

You can explore the town and talk to the townsfolk, especially to find out about crossing the river here.

White picket fences? They have an unusually large middle class for such a world.

Naomi is of course up front, having fun with the snow and looking rather carefree amd almost child-like, yet easily moving around the busy street, flowing like water between the people and never bumping despite looking like she would nearly constantly be bouncing off people. She is if course keeping aware of her surroundings much more than she appears.

Isandra learns

Harvest’s End subsists on fishing and trade, but also sports a ferry across the wide Rimeflow River that allows merchants and lumberers to cross back and forth. The ferry is operated by an ice troll named Rimetusk, who is supposed to keep the peace and represent the will and presence of the jadwiga Elvanna as well as serve as a lookout for Ulfen raiders coming into Irrisen territory to attack Algidheart or other major settlements along the waterway. Harvest’s End’s isolation from Whitethrone and the lack of any immediate contact with the jadwiga to whom Rimetusk is supposed to report has fostered a sense of self-interest and self-importance in the troll, and he now runs the town as the de facto representative of the government in Whitethrone.

If anything bad happens to Rimetusk, the entire village will suffer reprisals from the jadwiga Elvanna once the regional tax collector finds out.

There is more to find out if anyone else wants to Diplomacy(Gather Information) or Recall Knowledge(Local).

And find out that Rimetusk controls the only ferry across the river.

Rimetusk is not supposed to impede legitimate commerce, but he sometimes does to exert his authority.

The ice troll was corrupt before he had power but is now unscrupulous in his crookedness. He’s been known to skim off the top of what he turns over to tax collectors dispatched by the jadwiga Elvanna. He’s also known to take the occasional bribe.

Rimetusk can’t stand humans who don’t know their place (which is beneath him, of course), but he sincerely respects anyone who can best him in a feat of strength, especially wrestling.

Grand Archive

Thread for #3-08: Foundation's Price and #3-12: Fury's Toll | |

At this point, you have to deal with Rimetusk to get across the river. Here are some suggested approaches:

Bluff: You could pretend to be travelling merchants, although if you are not disguised as merchants this is harder to accomplish.

Diplomacy: Appealing to the fact that Rimetusk has no good reason to hold up travelers might work, but consider the ice troll to have an unfriendly starting attitude for this purpose. Perhaps a bribe along with the Diplomacy check?

Wrestling?: It seems Rimetusk might be open to wrestling one of you, no weapons or natural weapons. If you can pin him. . .

Intimidate: Doesn't seem like a good option except as a last resort.

Rimetusk responds to Naomi.

I run the ferry. There isn't a fee, but I need to know who is coming and going. As the representative of jadwiga Elvanna, I govern this town as well as serve as a lookout for Ulfen raiders coming into Irrisen territory to attack Algidheart or other major settlements along the waterway.

Naomi sighs at the dwarf's interruption, "My companion's personal hopes aside, we are just travelers escorting a few persons through to beyond the other side of Irrisen. Other than being on our path and thus buying supplies as we travel, we have no business with or in Irrisen itself. Of course, we'd like to keep our travels discreet, but since there is no fee for the ferry, that leaves me a few extra coin, perhaps a few gold would help keep our passing discreet?"

Technically one gold is akin to a hundred dollar bill to us, but lots of folks feel differently for some reason, so I'll the GM decide what he feels is an appropriate amount for this.
