Thank goodness, because my character would have lost his s~%+!!! That confession would have had me attacking the noble scion
Certainly feel free to play your character, don't worry about knocking the adventure off the rails...it could use a good nudge in a different direction, imo.
I like playing these hardcover adventures as close to intended as possible (I think it leads to better informed criticism than just houseruling/homebrewing everything instantly), but that doesn't mean there isn't room for much more.
I'm hoping you guys sandboxing around the city here will revive the game a bit before plunging into the final dungeon for this chapter.

Is Buying a Magic Item from XGE available for Downtime?
Otherwise, Mal would want to learn everything he can about where the older brother lives. I cannot seem to fit that into a Downtime activity choice.
cheers
GM Infinity |
Buying stuff with XGE is possible, what are you interested in?
Don't worry about finding an exact Downtime choice. I'd like it to be more of a sandbox time, sticking your noses into things...fleshing out the city a bit.
If you want to case the Vanthampur Villa that's of course doable. What's your approach? Sneaking in the shadows a few blocks away? Disguising as a butler and breaking in? Hiring the (thieves') Guild to get info for you? Committing arson then scoping it out while everyone runs for their lives? Something else?
Its a 3 story mansion with gated wall surrounding a bit of land. Something like a governer's mansion, rich and fortified estate.

I don't know. Need to go shopping. Thought it would be random.

Hmm. He certainly would not go the direct way. He would use some of his coin to find out about all of the scheduled visits to the mansion. Then, finding out connections with those visitors, so he can find a scheduled cover to get inside. Would be what he would be thinking.
cheers

Thought it would be random.
You have the option of naming a specific item you are looking for. But it comes down to the charisma (persuasion) roll, and you might lose your investment of 100gp.
Would be what he would be thinking
Sounds cool, will start putting some stuff together.

Assuming you all agree to divvy up the coin evenly, and then get paid from Zodge, you would have a bit more than the 400 gp required to get a breastplate.
My share of the grave robbing is available. It's important that I remain 'untainted' from that source. Even so, I am sure Evendur will carrying some residual guilt for a while.
Religion, bring guilt to the masses since time immemorial :)
GM Infinity |
platemail. As it is? He can afford splint Mail now
There's the possibility of plate already in your possession if you find a smith that can get the fused armor apart. It's only missing the gauntlets.
I think you might be the only one interested, unless Gorn is gonna do some multiclass shenanigans.
Gorn Steelbreaker |
Yeah, I still think Myl should get a share...
Mrmmph. I disagree with this.
With the player gone and the character now an NPC, it doesn't seem appropriate that they should have all the benefits of the PCs if they do not contribute the same.
Like, did they do anything in the final fight when we took a lot of damage? I don't recall it. And before that it was mostly a sideline role. Hence, it doesn't seem right to split it with them evenly.
Donal the Seeker |
Assuming that the fused armor is salvageable, how much would it cost for that to be made workable for Grim?
Donal will do whatever is necessary to make the world a better / safer place for the weaker folk. But he does respect Grim's feelings on the matter.
Donal the Seeker |
I understand, but in-game, Myl still came with us and played a part as a part of the team. Cutting her out is a meta-move that in-character Donal would not approve of.
GM Infinity |
I can see both sides of the argument, and ultimately its up to you guys. We'll do a party vote.
Myl's Money Problem=
Redistributed (208.36 to each): Gorn
Lost (173.36 to each): Donal
Mal?
Tib?
Grim?
This ultimately is a matter of 35 gold (a bit more than a tenth of a solid gold trade bar). In character consequences would be interesting.

* Studded Leather Armor of Fire Resistance
* Wand of Magic Missiles
* Hat of disguise
Myl should get a share.
GM Infinity |

Interesting question, its not that advanced of work I suppose. It would involve spot-heating the welds and then some semi-precise chiseling. Probably something like 1d4x5 percent of the base price...so 75 to 300. Could be modified by persuasion, or the smith might have a sidequest.
The best weapon and armorsmiths cluster their storefronts around the neighborhood of Seatower (named after the Seatower of Balduran which is also the Flaming Fist headquarters located there).

wish list
Alright, I think you might be overshooting a bit on what's really possible. Here's a rundown of the XGtE process for buying a magic item and some implications:
1. Pay 100 gp and a workweek to shop.
2. Roll charisma persuasion. You can buy +1s to the roll for each additional 100 gp and/or additional workweek you shop.
3a. If you wanted a specific item, then its rarity sets the DC. For example for Elven Chain (rare) you'd need to beat 20. You can only do 1 items at a time.
3b. If you were just browsing for nothing in particular, the roll result sets the items found in a complex way. For example, a result of 1 to 5 gets 1d6 items from magic table A available for purchase. A roll of 16-20 would get 1d4 items from magic table D, in contrast.
Then you would still have to actually purchase the item. The costs are going to prevent most of the things on your list, at this level/wealth you really just have a chance at:
common (20-70 gp)
uncommon (100-600 gp)
Rare's minimum is 2000.
Sorcerous Sundries here in Baldur's Gate allows an exception to the above, containing most common magic items readily available with no rolls necessary.
Also, I vaguely remember posting a list of available magic items, but Ill have to go back and dig a bit its been so long.
edit: All that said, the wish list is appreciated and well noted. ;)
"Mal" Malaric |
Ok. I was shooting for the moon.
I’ll stick to planning the murder. Maybe invest in the bookstore to repay his master.

I think once Donal has healed up a bit (short rest, maybe) he is going to come and destroy the statues... Maybe come back later when Grim has some magicks to protect us from these statues...
Evendur "Grim" Greymantle |
Might be a better investment than Splint Mail right now, what say you, Grim?
I am well pleased... I'll pray extra hard in gratitude to boot.

I could AND should bring that semi retired Doomguide we met earlier. We can do that while we see if we can get that platemail fixed.
Gotta be a long rest... I am well and truly spent.
GM Infinity |
Yes, desecrating the statues would be simpler than converting the altars. Something like material cost (in 25 gp neighborhood if not already in component pouch) and an opposed religion roll. I don't recall off hand what I said about altars last time but I think I mentioned positive energy being required (radiant).

Prayer of healing here
Was that platemail via grave robbing? I forget...
Gorn Steelbreaker |
Can someone else do the shopping for us?
Like, I think for anyone other than Mal, a Persuasion check is an autofail. ^_^
+1 weapon
+1 armor
Weapon of Warning (ideally this would just be an upgrade for Shellcracker that way I don't have to come up with another name for the weapon. =}
Lantern of Revealing
GM Infinity |
Added a BG map with marked points of interest to the tracker, which may or may not be useful. Descriptions for most can be found in the Gazetteer or chatting me.
Also, updated tracked stats as follows:
Donal 30/30, 19s
Evendur 23/23, 18s
Malaric 19/19, 15
Tiberius 21/21, 15
Is that correct (check ACs please, I lost track of your inventories at one point)? Gorn still needs hp roll.

What's 18s mean?
Edit: read the tracker... 18 with shield, got it.
Hoping this plate comes good

I just assumed base HPs a level and didn't roll
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
That's not bad after all..
Hps now 24

@Mal: If we're serious about tracking down invisible imps, why don't we try to acquire a Lantern of Revealing?
I have it on my wishlist, so I can buy it, I just need you to do the Per roll.
It looks and acts like a normal lantern, but it also reveals invisible creatures. That seems like it would be very useful if we suddenly have invisible creatures whose business we wanna be all up in.
(heh. Ideally the best way to research what the imps are and what they are up to us for us to find one, I rage out and grab it, then you can question him at leisure. Win!)
Gorn Steelbreaker |
Also also, it seems like Amrak at the tavern might be the easiest to 1) get a meeting with, and, 2) kick in the door and take by force, if we decide we need to.
Actually, the Hulk's last message might be a hint. If the Lantern was on fire, would that draw guards away from the Villa so you could infiltrate it easier?
"Mal" Malaric |

OK. I've probably a week of activity to do, so I don't want to get too far ahead.
* Captain Zodge scene
* Team deciding when they will hit the Low Lantern to give a timeline to Downtime
* Inventorying the servants and schedule at the mansion to plan to burn the place down without too many innocents. Find and steal the troll talisman if possible.
= Tibs, may be able to get us into the Upper City
= When are the fewest servants in the mansion? Who are they? Can we infiltrate some or all? Bribe them?
= When are the fewest guards in the mansion? Can we infiltrate some or all? Bribe them?
* First 4-hour session of investigating imps. Would it be possible to switch the proficiency from History to Investigation?
How can I locate invisible imps within the city?: 1d20 ⇒ 31d20 ⇒ 17
GM Infinity |
Nice, I like the bullet listed activities, gives me something to work with...very helpful.
History (and Arcana, Religion, and Nature) for me are about recall of lore (ie what you already know), not finding new stuff. I think that's Investigation's thing.
That said I don't care if you want to add your History mod to the roll. Maybe when you were learning Infernal you read stuff about imps, and didn't think important until just now.
"Mal" Malaric |
I forgot to add to the to do list Gorn’s Magic item shopping for the lantern of revealing which is a very good idea. We could pay party treasure so 100 gp five ways.
Buying Magic Item: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Adding history to his research imps roll gets him 19
Cheers
GM Infinity |
OK, that check result of 10 doesn't find a Lantern of Revealing with its uncommon rarity this week (needed 15). However, you do find 2nd level spell scrolls, among which is See Invisibility. 150 gp per scroll, or the seller could send you guys on a side-task for say 1d4+1 scrolls. If you're interested in that, I can write something up in gameplay. If not, just post the purchases you are making here in discussion.
Also, the 'looking for it' bear in mind is ongoing for Mal this tenday (during workdays) while you are doing other stuff.
Getting bookstore scene together now.
"Mal" Malaric |
Mal will buy a scroll of See Invisibility. Too bad we don't have a wizard.
Sorry to ask again. What was the final distribution of the loot? With Zodge's 200 gp? How much for the scroll 150 gp or 100 +150 = 250 gp?
Mal would buy a Disguise Kit for 25 gp and Forger's Kit for 15 gp. Thinking ahead, Mal would need some clothing for disguises for a 1) servant and 2) messenger who would work in the Upper City. And 3) dock hand, too. How much would clothing be?
Think the armored Fisters would need clothing for guards who would work in the Upper City, too. How much?
If we have extra time, Mal would want to do Downtime to learn Disguise Kit and Forger's Kit, so many things to do...
cheers
