Each of the clerics was outfitted with an array of magical items.
There are exits from the room going in every direction.
(But please don't go south. :) )
Hekk |
Hekk plays with the dagger for a bit, enjoying the shadow wake and remembering fondly the first time he held a flaming weapon. For once it does not look like he is going to go charging off in another direction.
"Pretty cool, huh?"

Tathane Halfbarrel |
Tathane looks a little sheepish when Leo catches him trying to use the wand. "Well, you know. Sometimes it works." He shakes it vigorously and then slaps it against his thigh a few times. "Usually if I just jiggle it a bit it works better."
Seeing his companions moving about the room, he takes a moment to remind them. "Don't open any doors or chests or closets or boxes or anything like that until I have a chance to check it out. These guys are all nasty enough that I fully expect that they've left surprises for us."

poor reading skills that had me missing your post entirely :)
LeGuin |
can I get a second on heading north?
Hekk |
sure.
Hekk moves to one of the unopened doors they passed by earlier and waits for Tathane to check it out.
"I'm only waiting because you asked. There's just something about a door..."
Tathane Halfbarrel |
Tathane moves up behind Hekk and pats him on the shoulder as he moves past. "Yeah, I know. You just want to bust them all down. Someday that habit's gonna kill you."
Perception, trapfinding: 1d20 + 13 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 13 + 4 = 32
GM MattMorris |
Thanks for the patience, everyone. Bonkers week at work.
Hekk heads through the double doors to the north into a wide hallway. At the western end, a small fountain burbles from an elaborate carving into a
shallow basin. Doors stand in alcoves along the north and south walls of this hall, and the hall’s east end opens into a larger hallway running north and south.
Listening at the door of on the north side of the hallway, Tathane hears nothing. When Hekk opens it, he finds what appear to be living quarters, though they are currently unoccupied.
Hekk |
Hekk searches and moves on to the next room, looking at Tathane expectantly. He does not mess with the fountain other than to look in it.
I figure we will rinse and repeat for all the rooms along this corridor and then for the rooms to the east as we get to them until something interesting (to Hekk) happens.
LeGuin |
Agreed on plan, head west until we find something for Hekk to smash.
Tathane Halfbarrel |
Agreed. I'll just check each door before opening. Also, I want to do Perception on the fountain.
Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (10) + 13 = 23 +4 for traps
Tathane checks the doors as the group enters each of the adjoining rooms. The first one they enter seesm small and boring. Tathane takes a moment to examine the fountain at the end of the hallway. It seems the perfect place to hide a little lever to open a secret door.
GM MattMorris |
Please place yourselves on the map where you would be as Hekk and Tathane are exploring.
Hekk and Tathane take point exploring the hallway. with Branson scanning rooms for magical emanations. Tathane notices that the font of "water" actually appears to be pooling with some sort of inky black negative energy. Sticking your hand in would probably be a painful experience.
The first two rooms in the hallway are unremarkable, but when Hekk opens the westernmost door, he finds himself face-to-face with a human-shaped creature, its flesh charred or dried, and its empty eye sockets seep trails of smoke. (Picture on Slide)

Branson Davelock |
Anyone within a 5' step ever wanted to coup de gras a bodak? You can't force the Fort save, because undead are immune to Fort saves, but you can get the critical damage at least.
Tathane Halfbarrel |
At Hekk's warning, Tathane closes his eyes but not before he took stock of the situation. If he could get behind the creature, he'd be able to have an advantage attacking.
Can't see the map (I'm at work and our VPN won't let me) so I don't know if I can get into flanking with the creature but that's what I want to do. I'm not going to attempt a coup de gras because I don't think I can do enough dmg.
Branson Davelock |
May as well keep your eyes open Tathane, move and sneak attack, or coup. Reasons: you can't sneak attack a target with total concealment from you. A held creature doesn't need to be flanked to sneak attack. A coup applies sneak attack damage, and critical hit damage.

Now, I don't know where that 50% chance to ignore it each round comes from, but Hold Monster just like Hold Person allows a new saving throw each round. Perhaps a Psionicsologist's version works differently, but I'm just pointing that out?
