Oxnard's Reign of Winter

Game Master Nathanael Love

Slides

We have one spot open for Reign of Winter; needs to be a divine caster/healer capable character.

Respond with interest and a character concept (don't need a full build, just a plan for what it will be) and I will pick someone.

We are about 2/3rds of the way through book one.

Would a kineticist healer be acceptable?

Build rules? It does sort of influence the concepts that I might explore... For example, significantly MAD characters don't work well on a 15 pt buy...

20 points point buy, 2 traits (preferably 1 from the campaign traits), 200 gold, no drawbacks, PF1 standard rules (no alternate rules, no 3rd party)

Would prefer not a kineticist but something full divine spread- the party is witch + melee ranger + bard + alchemist/fighter (ranged damage specialist) and we are replacing the oracle who dropped.

I've never played a druid before...

A dwarf Druid the Northern Ancestry trait. They feel an irresistible pull northwards and dream of living as a hermit in the coldest reaches of Golarion.

What's the level?

I was in a RoW game that faded somewhere in book 1.
I'd be happy to play a druid, oracle or shaman in your game.

Level 2 currently- we are in the first book of the AP.

I'll check back at this thread this afternoon around 4 PM Central and make a pick.

dot, I may submit a winter or fire oracle, I would prefer to play a fire kineticist through the AP, but I'll see if anything comes to me.

Could do my all time favorite healer. The fire sorcerer!

Phoenix: “ Bloodline Arcana: When casting any spell that deals fire damage, you can instead heal your targets. The spell deals no damage, and living creatures affected by the spell instead regain a number of hit points equal to half the fire damage the spell would normally deal.”

Lvl 1 Feat: Metamagic Elemental Spell “ Choose one energy type: acid, cold, electricity, or fire. You may replace a spell’s normal damage with that energy type or split the spell’s damage, so that half is of that energy type and half is of its normal type. Level Increase: +1 (an elemental spell uses up a spell slot one level higher than the spell’s actual level.)”

Trait: Magical Lineage “ Pick one spell when you choose this trait. When you apply metamagic feats to this spell that add at least 1 level to the spell, treat its actual level as 1 lower for determining the spell’s final adjusted level.”

Spell: Ray of Frost (Now ray of fire!)

———-

And with that a lvl2 sorcerer who specializes in fire magic is now a party healer. With unlimited healing to boot! Go VMC Cleric for Channel Energy for even more healing at lvl7. Choosing Restoration Domain allows you to remove stat damage as well, which really rounds out the healing aspect.

And with that? A fire blaster sorcerer. It’s debatable on how the healing works, but I’d argue that a fireball could theoretically heal your party while damaging the enemy. :D

1 person marked this as a favorite.

That is really clever Grumbaki

Silver Crusade

The spell deals no damage. only way it can heal and harm without GM house ruling is if the enemy are undead.

Rorek, you're missing the bloodline arcana. Regardless, I'd call attention to two things: ray of frost/fire only deals 1d3, the metamagic feat halves it, and the heal is halved in top of it - so you'd be healing people 1 hit point. While out of combat it might be fine (although terribly inefficient), in combat it's just plain horrible to spend a standard (actually, full round action, due to the metamagic) action for it. While there are ways to make it deal "slightly more damage", it's still going to be mediocre healing... And I'm not even considering the rule of certain GMs that level 0 "spells" are cantrips and excluded from things call out specifically for spells. The second thing is that the GM specifically wants a divine caster - he even said it when I proposed a kineticist healer. Stick to the usual clerics, oracles, shamans, inquisitors, paladins...

Silver Crusade

The arcana states the spell does not deal damage, and elemental spell does not halve the damage. however, ray of frost is 1d3, that only ever equates to 1 healing.

Well...I posit that it’s fun. In that even with half as healing, when else can you throw a fireball at your friends to heal them? At lvl5 channel is 3d6 (10.5 average). Fireball is 5d6 (8.75). It’s not as good...but...

“ When casting any spell that deals fire damage, you can instead heal your targets. The spell deals no damage, and living creatures affected by the spell instead regain a number of hit points equal to half the fire damage the spell would normally deal.”

The spell does damage. But you have the choice of healing your targets. So it’s possible (under one reading of it) that for each target you choose whether it heals or does damage. Less healing than channeling, but it’s offensive and defensive. And even if you need to choose when cast...you still can pick all blasting spells and they have the versatility of how they are used. And you get the only healing cantrip in the game. IE: the cherry on top.

Anyways, was just an idea. Glad that Edelsmirge appreciated it. I’ll bow out now and let you all get back to it. Oxnard is a great GM and whomever gets in will be fortunate to be in one of his games.

Silver Crusade

don't get me wrong, I was intrigued by the phoenix sorcerer as well,

however I don't think your reading holds up.

"The spell deals no damage", is defining the entire spell. If it worked as you posit, It would be worded "targets of the spell you specify" or something along those lines.

It never states you can pick and choose targets, only "targets of your spell".

just how I read it. And as he said, I noticed the GM wishes for a true divine caster of sorts.

That aside, GM, would you be open to 6th level divine casters or a druid?

officially, I'll submit the oracle, I've narrowed it down to two ideas, both fairly similar, one more supportive, the other more offensive.

the first-
Flame Oracle, with Haunted Curse (perhaps a spirit of a winter witch she angered at some point). Healing and offensive support.

The second,
Winter oracle with blackened curse. focusing on picking healing spells, and using the spells from the curse for offensive purposes. Very fire and ice themed. Likely much more support and healing focused with much higher "control" magic, as she would take freezing spells at some point, and probably Rime.

If it's not too late, I'm still hashing out the details, but I'll throw my hat in as well. I got a cleric in the works.
Race: TBD
Architype: Merciful Healer, Variant Channeling TBD
Domain: Healing[restoration]
Feat: Healer's touch
VMC: TBD

They'd be a combination buffer/healer, and an older fellow, who has sworn an oath to never again harm a sentient, in repentance for his actions when he was a younger man.

I'm going to grab Rorek55 to fill this spot- if you can check in on the discussion thread to finish fleshing your character out- we will have you join after the current encounter finishes.
