Hoo tries to nod as obviously as possible.
"Not worth it, time is running away."

Swim: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (9) + 0 = 9
Xavier swims a little farther to see if there's anything else, but doesn't seem that worried. "I'm with Hoo and Zahd. We should try and finish this up soon."

If Stefan does not find anything here he follows the others.

"Yes, who knowth what the Dopplevirml ith up to?! I don't know what you fellowth are looking for, but our task ith to thtop the flooding, and for that we need to retrieve the Fox."

![]() |

Hearing the desire to leave from most of the others, Boomer gives up his search and follows them out.

![]() |

"Let us proceed to the adjacent room then. We can continue the search once we have dealt with the water." Stefan suggested.

Xavier doesn't have to swim any more.
If Stefan does not find anything here he follows the others.
Well, there are a lot of dictionaries, and few thesauruses.
The remainder of this "wing" of the library basement seems to a collection of narrow, curving hallways filled with shelves, and piles of sodden books (and a couple of step stools and ladders) on the floor. The newly lowered water-level shows the extent of the damage, and makes traversing the stacks easier.

Zahd maintains a constant grimace on his face as he searches through the piles of destroyed literature for anything worthy of note or attention.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26

Hoo dashes through the halls, trying to pick out her specific literary quarry.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

The party doesn't find anything obvious in the hall but then again trying to find a slip of paper in a library is a bit like trying to find a particular hair on a barber shop floor.
What's next?

![]() |

"We should probably go try and find Doppelvirml before he gets any farther. He can probably give us some answers." Xavier pipes up.

![]() |

Zahd takes a long, morose look at the ruined books before turning his head, sighing and agreeing with a short "Yes. Let's move on." If this was a movie and Zahd was at all close to being a relevant character, this would be where the sad music would play but as it stands he just takes his excessively dramatic steps towards new bookshelves.

"Doppelvuml?"
So after the other Virml has 3 votes (Hoo, Vozzik and Xavier). Where would you like to look for him? He was heading upstairs from the front lobby the last you saw him.

![]() |

"Another... you that's upstairs and not missing his teeth? Yeah we should've probably gotten on that sooner..."

![]() |

"Let's head back upstairs and see what he's up to. Whoever or whatever he is, he should have some idea of what's going on here." Xavier starts to wade his way towards the stairs.

![]() |

After searching through the other parts, Boomer is more than happy to move on to more destructive tasks, like ridding the world of a vile doppelganger.

![]() |

"yeah. Vozzik why'd you call him that?"
"There ith a nathty creature called a 'Doppleganger' capable of duplicating the appearanth of anyone it hath theen. I don't know that that ith what we are dealing with, here, but it would eckthplain one thing, eh?"

The World's Most Interesting GM |

The party sloshes up the through the spiral grilled stair, and the deluge of pounding water that is spilling off the edge of the library's mezzanine. Thoroughly drenched, and looking like a group of drowned possums they make their way across the floor up the step and into the entrance lobby where thankfully the floor is dry.
The lobby remains empty (and strangely quiet if the party decides to close the doors on the waterfall behind them).
Following the stairs up they are confronted with a closed door upon the second landing.

![]() |

Hoo seems unusually excited about her newfound knowledge of the doppleganger, to the point that she doesn't even seem to mind travelling against the current of a deluge of water.

![]() |

Xavier starts wringing out his hair and cloak as he walks up. "Huh. Probably went home." he says to no one in particular when he gets to the lobby. "Someone want to try that door, or should I?"

![]() |

Zahd can't seem to decide if he is resigned to the fact that his clothes are soaked or if he's finally reached his breaking point and is about to snap after walking up through a waterfall. Either way, he looks like he hasn't slept in years but trudges along nonetheless.
"Be my guest."

![]() |

Xavier takes a step forward to open the door.

![]() |

Stefan gets into position for combat, ready to repel any attack.

![]() |

Vozzik has his hand crossbow loaded with Cold Iron, still, but he's also keeping an eye on our toothless Virml, who may, after all, still be under the sway of this creature.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Xavier shoves open the door and Stefan jumps through ready for anything. All the motion however seems to cause the pile of precariously stacked clay jars along the wall opposite the door to wobble, and then fall like oranges at a fruit market. As they clatter to the floor one after another they break showering the entryway in a rainbow of vivid inks, that dapple the witchwolf's fur.

Dean Kreighton Shaine |

"Come in. It's... open...." says the Master of Scrolls without looking up from his place bent over a cluttered desk at the far side of the room.
As if on cue, a second ink avalanche sends the few remaining stacked ink pots to the floor in front of the doorway.
"Mind the broken crockery." says the Dean after the last pot falls.

This large chamber is crammed with desks and lecterns designed for copying scrolls and manuscripts. Along the north wall, a tall, broad shelf sags with sheaves of parchment, while near the exit to the south, where a stack of ceramic ink jugs once stood near wall-mounted racks of quills. Two bays of windows on the west wall offer an impressive nighttime view of the Lodge’s greatest landmark, Skyreach Tower, while the eastern windows overlook the library’s main stacks. Overhead is a beautiful mural of Desna reaching out with one finger to probe a young gnome's ear.
A 8-foot-long albino alligator looks up at the Technicolored™ Stefan from the floor with reptilian interest.

Hoo rushes forward, eager to speak.
"Hi! Okay, so, fish. Big fish, from the feywild. Lost a fox person, and is trying to flush him out of th'books. Spitting up ALL the water. We found another Virml, and this Virml is beat up, missing all the teeth, a water fairy took them, and he was in a cage too. And he said that HE found a scroll, and the summoned a fox person, and the fox led him to doom, which means that the Virml from before, with the teeth, isn't a real. Not at all. Maybe even he's the fox? Don't know, but the fish, the big one, with water, he wants the fox, and if the teethful Virml from up here, he's the fox, then he's the fish wants, and we solve the problem!"

Xavier steps forward next to Hoo. "Yeah, that's about everything, so if you could just point us towards where the imposter went, we'll be on our way." Suddenly, an idea pops into Xavier's head, and he seems to start to look more closely at the Dean.
I am probably wrong, but it occurs to me that we don't know if this is the real Kreighton Shaine, or if this is whatever shapeshifting imposter we're chasing.
Sense Motive (Kreighton Shaine): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Xavier shrugs, and resumes patiently waiting for a response.

![]() |

Zahd looks at all the broken masonry with a saddened sigh. (A now quite common occurrence)
After Hoo gives her spiel, Zahd points in her direction and gives a simple "That."
If possible, Zahd is going to also scrutinize the authenticity of the Dean.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (9) + 0 = 9

Just place yourselves where you like in the room so you can see him. Note: it does take time for sense motive to work. Thus far though he checks out.
Also, since they were mentioned, and no doubt playing on people's minds as the look at the Master of Scrolls, or the person to their left, characters may attempt a knowledge (nature) check to try to remember what they might know of doppelgangers.

![]() |

Stefan glances at Hoo, amazed he was able to say all that without taking a breath.
"The flooding is caused by a an aquatic fey who is trying to find a fox person who stole something from her. We have returned to check on Virml. We found another Virml imprisoned down there and came back to determine which one is the real one. The other one might be the person the fey is looking for." Stefan explained.

Hoo notices the suspicion of Xavier and attempts to recall any other experiences she's had dealing with creatures that steal the forms of others.
Nature: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
She remains trusting of the master of scrolls, but it's a little apparent that she's worried.

Boomer nods at the others' reports. "This whole th..th...ing is a real mmmm...ess. Figuratively a....a..and literally. Where did the V...V...Virml that came up from the stacks gggggo after we went in?"

![]() |

Zahd will try and recall what he can from the "Doppelgangers throughout history" course he took senior year. It was quite riveting, actually...
Knowledge(nature): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
...but not quite that useful. The others can overhear Zahd mumbling about the odd factor of how doppelVirml didn't kill the original.
If it's ok with the GM, I might have had Zahd recall this info earlier and directly relay it to the party. If not, that's also ok.

That's fine.
"That all sounds--err, interesting(?). What about that scrap of paper that started the whole thing? Any leads there?"
"Doth your crocodile bite?" asks Virml nervously looking at the big scaly reptile.
"No."
Boomer nods at the others' reports. "This whole th..th...ing is a real mmmm...ess. Figuratively a....a..and literally. Where did the V...V...Virml that came up from the stacks gggggo after we went in?"
"Well wherever he is, he wasn't here when I arrived. We should probably call for a general alert and sequester the Virml you have with you in the meantime. Just to avoid any confusion."

![]() |

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
With one last look Stefan turns around and asks the others: "Shall we take Virml back down with us?"

Not Vozzik's strong suit but...
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (17) + 0 = 17
"That all sounds--err, interesting(?). What about that scrap of paper that started the whole thing? Any leads there?"
"The thcrap that we got at the beginning from the Other Virml would not be something we could put much trutht in, I would think? The fight with that...female fae...when thee fled, there was thomething that went with her. Could have been paper, maybe."

![]() |

Boomer shrugs. "I th....ink we should go back d..ddddown and explore the rest. Maybe the other Vvvv...irml went there."

"You remember something? What do you remember? Any bit can help us."
