Thankful for the now calm waters Catyshlara goes out into the deck with a smile. She takes a deep breath of the cold northern air. It is good to be back. Thank Sarenrae we got through the storm without damage.

"I think I'm done with boats for a while, captain, but well done." Darren shows his gratitude and waits for the canoes without any further words.

One of the warriors, a stocky woman wearing oilskin over furs, waves to you with a smile. "Rakeet! Ja ru Skjalden?"

Skald:
"Greetings! Do you speak Skald?"

followed quickly by "Or do you prefer Taldane?"

"Welcome, southerners! I am Tikasak, emissary of the Five Animals, and I bid you welcome to Aaminuit!" She speaks softly to the two warriors in her canoe in a lyrical language, without hard consonants or rhythmic emphasis. They respond in kind, and the canoe moves closer to Rimedrake. "The ice is too early, and so you must come ashore in our canoe. There is room for two in each, plus one with me."

The other canoes approach Rimedrake and sidle up to the ship's hull.

Captain Redaxe seems nonchalant about the process, giving you some confidence this isn't a trap. "We'll leave tomorrow morning," she mentions, "so if you need anything from us, let us know."

Please decide how you will split the party into the canoes. There are 4 canoes - three with two spaces in them, and one with one space plus Tikasak.

Rogar gets into the canoe with Cat and Begins to Row shore

With canoe assignments settled, the party forms up and begin paddling from the Rimedrake towards the shore, avoiding the occasional chunk of pack ice that has broken free.

As you head inland, there is a shout from one of the warriors, and you see several sprays of water emerge from the sea to your north. A pod of whales is visible, fairly far off. The warriors don't seem overly concerned, and in fact seem to take this a good omen.

However, as you continue, two of the whales break off from the pod and head in towards you on an intercept course. Tikasak's face darkens, and she shouts to the other canoes in Erutaki. "The males are coming closer - hopefully to play and not to hunt."

Tactical map is linked at the top of the page. While in a canoe you are squeezed due to the cramped quarters and unstable platform.

Ashwell: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

You can make Knowledge (nature) checks if you're trained. You can all also take one round's worth of actions in the pre-initiative phase, after it becomes obvious the whales are heading in your direction.

Weird question, GM. Can a casting of haste on the rowers make the canoes move faster?

Unfortunately, no. But since you asked and I forgot to mention it, I should explain the mechanics for rowing.

Each canoe moves at a speed of 30 feet per round as long as at least two passengers are paddling, and a speed of 20 feet per round if only one person paddles. This is regardless of the paddler's speed. Paddling requires a standard action.

Riding the whale back to shore is probably out of the question without some form of magic or extraordinary class feature. You can flip the canoe back over with a standard action. It'll be another move action to climb back in.

CMB: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (13) + 16 = 29
