**OVERSEER ANNOUNCEMENT**

“Pathfinders! The unthinkable has happened. The Whispering Tyrant’s prison, Gallowspire, has exploded from below. The most infamous lich in history has escaped, and he now roams free. Worse, he has set in motion a vile ritual in his former prison. We must intervene before the ritual ends. Quickly find your assigned group, aid in our preparations for the expedition to Gallowspire, and listen for instructions.”

Table GMs, please begin part 1.

The Perennial Crown

That was Marcos Farabellus speaking.

You're in Skyreach, the central fortress of the Grand Lodge in Absalom. Pathfinders of all descriptions mill about at the base of the stairs, expressions of excitement, fear, and determination on their faces. Atop the staircase leading into the tower, Master of Swords Marcos Farabellus gestures for silence. Marcos is known for his good cheer. Today, however, his expression is grim. He clears his throat before speaking, his voice a low rumble.

Yes, you heard me correctly. Gallowspire is gone, and the Whispering Tyrant has escaped. The Whispering Tyrant, who slew a goddess and conquered nations with armies of undead, has returned. He pauses and sighs. And he’s been busy. Marcos gestures to the man standing next to him and nods. This is Siege Lord Wynsal Starborn, and he has more information on recent events. The other man steps forward, his breastplate gleaming. We know that a massive explosion enveloped Gallowspire, and we know that undead hordes have swept throughout Lastwall. I have already sent scouts to investigate Gallowspire. They found a mysterious jungle surrounding the tower, or at least, where the tower should have been. The tower was gone, and there was a massive crater where it once stood. At considerable personal risk, the scouts who were most skilled at evading detection went inside the ruin itself. Fortunately, they survived, and they had the following to report. First, the ruins beneath still contain access points to the chambers below. Second, the Whispering Tyrant took the time to set up wards to block access to the deepest levels. Third, and most disturbingly, there are necromantic energies beyond these wards, energies so powerful that they are leaking into the surrounding area. The scouts surmise that a ritual of incredible intensity is taking place somewhere deep beneath the crater. It is building toward something, and with every passing day, it grows stronger.

Marcos Farabellus addresses the crowd again, but his voice holds a hint of fear rarely heard in his speech. Pathfinders, we must stop this ritual. The Whispering Tyrant has had thousands of years to plan what he would do if he ever escaped. I shudder to think of the terrors he plans to unleash. This is not just a problem for Lastwall; it’s a problem for the entire world. His voice quiets, I have no idea what else you’ll find on the deepest levels, what guardians and treasures the Whispering Tyrant has locked away. Be prepared for anything.

This is going to be a significant undertaking, and you’ll have about a day to prepare while we get everyone else up to speed and set the logistics. Once you arrive, meet with Venture-Captain Shevar Besnik and Silver Crusade leader Ollysta Zadrian.

Be sure to prepare for a dangerous journey both above and below ground. I wish you the best of luck, for all our sakes.

Character art on slide 1.

The Perennial Crown

You look around and see some Pathfinders gathered near you. It looks like this is your team.

Please introduce your characters, and let Marcus know if you have any questions!

Now is the time to make Heroic Aid rolls, if you want to upgrade any of your 3 tokens. It's based on the character's level only, as follows:

Level 5-8: 3d6
Level 9-12: 4d6
Level 13-16: 5d6
Level 17+: 6d6

You can roll the dice based on the character level for each token you ant to upgrade.

We will be starting part 2 within 48 hours! Before then, make sure your aid and heroic aid characters are taken care of, as well as your intros!

In the corner sits a planter with a grape vine draped upon a rapier. Leaves of different sorts cover the soil within the container.

As Marcus Farabellus stops speaking, the vines reform into a humanoid shape. Leaves become a fine suit of darkleaf lamallar.

"My friends," the vine leshy says with a deeply Galtan accent, "It's a pleasure to meet you, in spite of the circumstances. I am Syrah Viognier di Vine, Cultivar of Halcamora, Grand Cru of the Lucky Drunk. You have my rapier and what humble prayers I can muster."

They bow deeply.

"Before we get about this grim business, can I offer you some wine?"

Also in the assembling crowd:

A many-hued nagaji accompanied by one of the many members of the faerie dragon Clan of Riddywhipple. "I am called Tarnissss."

A soft spoken Vudrani man with almost divine magnetism and signs of elvish heritage, holding a finely made bow. "And I am known as Purdesh Sen. If you do not like wine, I can offer you chai."

Finally, there is Amara Li herself — or so it would seem. "Oh, I'm honored to be working with you all. Don't let my several titles intimidate you. We are all peers in this fight."

They are injured and must spend 8PP at the end of the scenario to recover from their injuries (otherwise, the character is effectively dead, as on page 17 of the season 10 guide ["If the character cannot resolve an affliction that would render her unplayable, mark the character as dead."]).

A woman in the distinctive steel and red armor of Korvosa’s Gray Maidens salutes the Master of Swords in the quick, jaunty manner of someone who enjoys flaunting conventions. A glow emanates from within her helmet, as though the steel contained a warm fire’s pulsinf. She carries a standard with a scarlet rose charge on a silver field, the banner fluttering in a phantom wind, while her other hand gently caresses the pommel of her sheathed longsword.

”First Sergeant Sayna Asenath Elantho, Scarlet Rose Company, Eagle Knight, etcetera....” Her voice has a tinge of Osiriani around the edges. She removes her helmet, revealing a pageboy cut of red hair, fiery orange eyes, and cruel scars running across her entire face in valleys and cracks. The scars have been done over with tattoos, the ink of which pulsates like a warm fire. ”I am out in the world to enjoy being a proper knight for once in my life. Also, it’s dreadfully hard for me to find an eligible woman in Korvosa who isn’t an ex or an ex of an ex nowadays.”

She hooks the helmet onto her belt and holds out a hand to Viognier. ”I’ll always take free wine from a Caydenite. Got any reds?”

Aid Token Results so Far

Lazlo I misspoke last night. Two of your characters were injured in the process of upgrading your aid tokens. This may mean you may want to retcon a decision to aid, based on the results of seeing the first PC fail. If you would not have rolled I will remove your lower-level Heroic tokens and convert them to regular tokens. This is a DIFFICULT and DANGEROUS check! Basically, don't roll it unless you have PP to burn — I would have noted this beforehand at a live table. If you are unhappy with your decision let me know and I will retcon a roll.

Injured characters*: Tarniss

Everyone has checked in, posted an intro, and determined their tokens — thank you for your patience!

Marcos takes a sip of the white wine and sighs with satisfaction. He gestures to an immense glyph on the floor — people are conspicuously avoiding it.

When we're ready to depart, you'll step on that symbol. It'll magic you away to the Gallowspire — or, near enough. You're to land next to the mysterious jungle — what people have oh-so-creatively dubbed the "Gallowgarden". He rolls his eyes. The place is full of horrible amalgamations of fungus and animal, as well as vicious plants. While it appears the Whispering Tyrant took most of his undead servants with him, whatever this explosion was created new threats. Because why would it be easy?

He sips the wine again. It Looks like you have a strong group, and some of you know each other. Good. You'll need all the advantages you can get today. And if not, well, you at least have the resources to enjoy a good drink before you die. That’s a rare luxury indeed.

This is the time to make any further preparations or ask any questions. The Overseer will move us to the next scene later tonight or tomorrow, I believe.

Sayna takes a drink and laughs at Marcos' warnings. "I survived hellknights and Ileosa; a Whispering Tyrant sounds like a welcome break from tyrants that don't know how to shut the hells up."

Marcos Farabellus stands atop the steps of Skyreach and waves his hands. “Pathfinders! It is nearly time to depart. We’ve sent scouts ahead to prepare an anchor for teleportation. Finish your preparations and make your way through the teleportation circle inside Skyreach.” The Master of Swords sets his jaw. “Brace yourselves. Our arrival point is not pleasant.”

One after another, Pathfinders step onto an immense glyph on the floor, the center of the teleportation circle. As they do, they each vanish into thin air, only to reappear in a distant location. The beautifully carved and painted stone walls of Skyreach fade into a moss-covered expanse of ancient ruins. On the other side of the circle, the air is warm, humid, and filled with the cloying stench of rotten meat.

Standing atop one of the ruins, a figure in gleaming full plate beckons the first arrivals to her. She waits silently, her face grim, until the remainder of the expeditionary force arrives. She then addresses the assembled group. “Welcome to Ustalav, Pathfinders. I am Ollysta Zadrian, leader of the Silver Crusade. Thank you for coming so quickly. Let me get straight to the point. The nearest undead horde is likely to sweep through this area in the next hour or so, and we must not remain overlong. Please, follow me.”

After a tense but brief journey, the expedition arrives at the edge of a dark jungle. The vegetation is thick, but the plants are twisted and gnarled. A group of Pathfinders dressed to blend in with the surrounding terrain step forward and greet the expedition. Their leader, a thin human man with long hair, smiles when he sees Zadrian. “Ollysta, you old war dog. It looks like you found yourself a small army. I hope it’s enough.”

The paladin’s expression remains focused and stern. “Yes, I hope so too. You should tell them what we know.” The man smiles charmingly. “Greetings, Pathfinders. I’m Shevar Besnik, up until recently the venture-captain of Vigil. I technically still am, I suppose,” he says, his smile turning sour. “These few individuals with me are all of the surviving Pathfinders from Vigil’s destruction. So they were the only Pathfinders left around here to teach the Tyrant a lesson. Until you got here, that is!”

Shevar continues, “Our first job is to make our way through this jungle. I know some of you probably have the means to bypass the jungle entirely and get to the crater, but that would mean certain death for those who can’t. Let’s stick together and make sure we all make it to the other side.” Ollysta raises her shield, which is emblazoned with a golden holy symbol of Sarenrae, “No matter what we face, Pathfinders, remember: the dawn brings new light. May Sarenrae’s grace guide our blades.” Shevar adds, “And with that, let’s meet whatever this twice-damned forest can throw at us head on!”

Table GMs, please begin part 2.

The Perennial Crown

Please see Slide 2 for some awesome artwork of Ollysta, and a familiar face if you ever played Tome of Righteous Repose.

----

Ollysta Zadrian and Shevar Besnik lead you into the Gallowgarden. Among the vegetation, you see numerous pieces of stone ruins… the ruined city of Adorak once extended all of the way up to Gallowspire, but when a jungle suddenly emerged from the ground, the ruins were uprooted and shattered.

With supernatural speed, bruise-colored clouds gather in the sky above the jungle, bringing with them a stinging rain that reeks of embalming fluid. Just above the tree line, horizontal bolts of purple lightning leap between the clouds. Thunder rumbles unceasingly across the landscape.

Ducking beneath the canopy several of you realize that this place is far from natural. The trees are a horrific amalgamation of animal, plant and fungal matter. Occasionally you see things flitting through the undergrowth. Generally, they have too many legs, eyes or other body parts. No true natural creatures dwell here, the plants bear strange designs reminiscent of skulls, eyes, and splatters of blood and the air is humid, heavy and oily. It stinks like the wet ashes of a funeral pyre. The entire place exudes a malignant feeling.

Travel through the forest is difficult. Trails peter out without warning and your trail behind you seems to vanish more often than not. It feels like the forest tries to close in around you, almost as if it wants you to get lost, run out of food and water and die of thirst. Survival checks to get along in the wild and follow tracks have their DCs increased by 10, and woodland stride, trackless step, and similar class features do not work.

The slowly moving stream to the east gives off a pungent odor here. A yellowish mist clings to its surface. The path ahead opens a bit into a clearing. The few trees and ancient buildings here are coated with a heavy layer of sickly, green fungus that oozes a sweet-smelling, purple fluid when disturbed.

---

You trudge through this place for a while, then come to a small clearing.

Ahead you notice a being made of ligaments of stringy black fungus that connect the bones of its filthy skeleton. In numerous places, the fungus has formed thorny growths. Next to it is a hulking form has a long, vulturelike neck ending in a head with a disgusting, one-eyed visage.

The Perennial Crown

You need to make 2 checks, one for each kind of creature on the map! I'll give you the moldy-looking one. To keep things going, I will choose 2 things if the player doesn't have any specific questions about a creature.

And thanks for labeling your token on the map! :D

The fungal creature is a Bonethorn. It's a plant with standard plant traits.

Two things about Bonethorns:
1. Bonethorns form from bodies devoured and reanimated by a hideous, flesh-eating fungus. After consuming a creature’s flesh, the fungus binds to the bones and takes the place of the body’s muscular system. As the fungus spreads across the skeleton, it solidifies into numerous raised spikes used to implant fungal spores into other living creatures. Every time it damages a creature, the victim must make a fortitude save to avoid becoming infested with spored, which rip through flesh and do damage every round. This is a disease effect.

2. Many adventurers assume these creatures are undead or negative energy-aligned, and it's the last mistake they ever make. Bonethorns LOVE positive energy — it not only heals the creature but it gives them Haste and fast healing for a round!

Sayna is communicating via her Maiden's Panoply. Even though she has not acted yet, she is not flat-footed thanks to the armor's ability (a reminder in case something decides to attack her before she goes)

The Perennial Crown

I'll give you the other creature with the 30. Kirana cannot remember anything new about the Bonethorn.

The Bonethorn's companion is a Ghole, a Monstrous Humanoid. Its jaws look very powerful.

Three things about Gholes:
1. Gholes are foul denizens of the wilderness that feed upon rotten meat. Their bites and claws are full of bubonic plague.

2. They can do sneak attack and like to savage the sick — they automatically do sneak attack damage on anything suffering from a disease.

3. A Ghole's mouth is so disgusting that its bite helps bolster diseases. Creatures bitten must succeed at a Fort save or the frequency any diseases is doubled.

Guess what is also a disease effect? The Bonethorn's spores. So if you fail the fort save you will have the damage happening twice a round.

Whatever you think is the most interesting

Melody moves up next to Sayna and begins inspiring her allies with an excited cheer.

The Perennial Crown

Melody remembers even more things about Bonethorns — you all are basically experts in the field at this point. She doesn't remember much about Gholes, however.

Two more things about Bonethorns:
1. If a bonethorn scores a critical hit with any of its natural weapons, the victim takes a –4 penalty on its Fortitude save to resist the spore effect.

2. Bonethorns have DR/ bludgeoning; their bones shatter under blunt force.

The vulture-necked Ghol casts a spell-like ability. Lazlo and Kirana identify the spell as haste! The creature then moves up alongside Narayan.

The Bonethorn then moves into a flank with the Ghol — it seems these two creatures have been hunting together, and have formed a repertoire of sorts.

It then tries gore Narayan, rushing in and trying to shove a splintered, disease-ridden bone into the druid's flesh!

Attacks:

Sayna’s Lion’s Call is a bit redundant with Melody’s song so she’s gonna hold off of it for now. Also, I think Kate’s inspire is actually +4 thanks to her banner

Sayna rushes up to the front line, easily able to get there thanks to the quickening spell. She enters her battle stance, mentally centering herself. Swift action to enter sisterhood style, passing on harrying partners to Viognier and Narayan

Sisterhood gives every ally within 20 ft of Sayna +1 untyped on reflex and will saves. Her and any adjacent allies don’t provide soft cover against allies’s attacks, so feel free to shoot spells through them at no penalty!

Melody moves forward, ending her cheer. Lingering performance for the next three rounds!

She draws her dagger, in case she needs to step in.

The Perennial Crown

Kirana completes her casting, and a tiger materializes, pouncing on the Bonethorn! It misses twice but nevertheless takes a good chunk out of the creature, though it's also resistant to the claw's piercing and slashing damage.

Sinew bends and flexes as the Bonethorn easily avoids the Grab attempt.

Lazlo draws a wand and flies 80 feet (with haste).

if the GM rules Lazlo can draw a wand as part of his Move action (if not, no worries):

lightning bolt: 5d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 3, 4, 2) = 15

Drawing a wand as part of a move action:
To my mind it's pretty clearly RAW that you can draw a wand as part of a move.

Drawing a weapon so that you can use it in combat, or putting it away so that you have a free hand, requires a move action. This action also applies to weapon-like objects carried in easy reach, such as wands.

Drawing and Sheathing a Weapon-like Object: I know I can draw or sheathe a weapon-like object as a move action using the "Draw or sheathe a weapon" action, but if I have a base attack bonus of +1 or higher, can I draw a weapon-like object with a regular move?

Yes. As shown on the chart on page 183, when you have a BAB of +1 or higher, you are combining the regular draw or sheathe a weapon action (to draw a weapon) with a move action. Thus all rules for draw or sheathe a weapon apply, including the ability to draw a weapon-like object.

You should be able to show this to any GM to avoid table variation in PFS.

Bonethorn Reflex: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 28

Lazlo draws his wand as he moves and blasts some pieces off the bonethorn!

The Bonethorn steps into a flank and full attacks the wholesome leshy! If it's going to die, it will do its best to reproduce.

attacks:
Gore, haste: 1d20 + 24 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 24 + 1 = 43 vs AC 32
Claw 1, haste: 1d20 + 24 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 24 + 1 = 45 vs AC 36
Claw 2, haste: 1d20 + 24 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 24 + 1 = 33 vs AC 36
Gore 2, hasted attack: 1d20 + 24 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 24 + 1 = 35 vs AC 36
Claw 1, haste, confirm: 1d20 + 24 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 24 + 1 = 44 vs AC 36

Gore 1, Piercing: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (1, 6) + 9 = 16 Fort save
Claw 1, Piercing/Slashing, Crit: 4d6 + 9 + 9 ⇒ (1, 4, 4, 3) + 9 + 9 = 30 Fort save at -4 to avoid Spores
Claw 2, Piercing/Slashing, Crit: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (3, 3) + 9 = 15 Fort save at -4 to avoid Spores
Gore 2, Piercing: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (6, 3) + 9 = 18 Fort save at -4 to avoid Spores

The disease effect won't stack so if you roll under, say, 24 you can forgo the other saves.

Despite Sayna's best attempts to bodyguard, the terrible creature hits the leshy twice. It swats aside Viognier's parry attempt before ripping into them — jamming their spores deep into the leshy flesh with a particularly savage claw attack.

This is before further parry attempts. V. will need to beat a 45 on parry 2. We will let V. Parry before resolving these attacks and fort saves.
