5e Curse of Xanathon

Game Master Helaman

Something is rotten is Rhoona…

A bizarre series of proclamations coming out of the Ducal palace casts a pall over the city – taxes must be paid in beer, horses ridden by civilians must be ridden backwards. Soon the entire town is in an uproar.

Whereas: Stephen, Duke of Rhoona has been acting in a dangerously unstable manner;
And Whereas: The Duchy of Rhoona is ready to fall before the Forces of Evil;
It is hereby decreed that a valiant and courageous party of adventurers must learn the secret of the Duke’s insanity and free the city from the yoke of chaos...

The creature already landed - you're closing to melee?

Sharee, Ordrud and Marcus ALL land good shots into the creature, which leans and takes an awkward step to the side, screaming in pain.

Augar stands his ground and Vothe runs in to try to fight it in hand to hand but to no effect.

You now hear a roar behind you... looking over your shoulders you see another incoming creature. A flying ambush if you will.

No actions from the new one that is off map at this point

The manticore on the ground roars and goes all out on Vothe!

Just want to say thank you for your patience... I needed a day or two to gather myself. I got back in to posting in my player games much earlier today but just needed some time to post in my GM games. Nothing big. Its just when back to back EARLY shifts collide with family obligations and minor "contentions" I tend to take a day or three away from PbP. Apologies.

Vothe and Ordrud just tear into their foe in a bloody display of extreme violence at its best! Augar then comes in low, smashing one its paw with a crack of bones! It may be close to death but it fights on, maddened by pain.

Sharee turns and throws an arrow into the incoming beast, that screeches as it takes the arrow in the shoulder... another meaty "Thunk" can be heard as Marcus also adds his arrow to its hide.

GOOD round all!

I always max the damage on the first. The roll itself is added to that (remember you don't double mods)... sooo 8 + 6 + 6 = 20!

Tracking it wouldn't be too hard, especially as its bleeding.

Gimme a bit...

One handed hunt and peck sucks but the pain killers are good ;)

Tracking it back to its cave isn't hard... but climbing to it isn't easy.

Gonna just fast forward to get the game back in the groove

You make the climb and kill the wounded manticore.

What you find is worth it... there are many corpses or part corpses and so there is some salvage to be recovered.

A set of saddle bags have some expensive looking leather bound books, as well as valuable looking writing kit. The saddle that lies nearby needs some repair but is finely tooled... worth something in its own right.

Another corpse still has a coin purse that bears 50 gold pieces in assorted demominations.

A third corpse, mainly a torso, shoulder and arm gives you a silver armband and 3 jewelled rings.

Finally, in the back of the cave is s stout spear of incredible workmanship, it's gold inlaid head engraved with several runes.

Rogue 3 HP 16/21 | AC 14 | Str +0 | Dex +5 | Con +2 | Int +4 | Wis +2 | Chr +1 | Speed 30ft | Init +3 Perc +6 | normal vision

After finishing off the creature, Marcus looks around the cave with the others. "Seems this one had been terrorizing travelers for some time. Volthe, you know what these books are? Augar, what about this equipment? I don't think I've ever seen such a fancy spear. Even this armband and rings look valuable. Is any of it magical?" he says as he tries to determine the value of some of the items.

Int to value armband: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Int to value ring 1: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Int to value ring 2: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Int to value ring 3: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22

The books are in common and is a History of the Northern kingdoms, and the other a book of poetry.

Could be worth maybe 50gp combined. The saddle is fancy... maybe 25gp.

The armband is heavy and of fine silver work. Possibly 50gp.

The rings are all of gold and semi precious stones. Two of them are worth 20-30 gold each... except one that stands out. It's worth much more... and looks like it has arcane sigils worked into its design.

"Would that I could answer if anything is magical, but alas I was not trained in how to ritually cast magic."

Vothe thinks for a moment, then adds "We can probably figure out what they do if we spend a bit of time studying them." i.e. short rest.

Spear is +1... and can cast Divine Favor once per day as per a level 1 spell without concentration.

Ring is a ring of protection from undead. +1 AC vs undead melee attacks, Resistance to necrotic damage.

Augar decides that with the upcoming war his place is back at Rockholme. He apologises and wishes you the best. You all rest the day (long rest) and part ways in the morning. He goes one way and you another.

Not far down the path a solitary figure waits at the side of the road...

Looking the speaker up and down she gives a rather seductive smile.

"Not a pirate, but I'm a' willing to take the Whale Road as the next shieldmaiden!", she giggles as she stands and gives a very short bow.

"Greetings to you all and well met. I am Katla, but you can just call me Kat. I was lead here by a dream from the gods and told to join this fine group of adventurers, for you would need my help!"

As she speaks she twirls a small talisman on a leather thong around her wrist.

Marcus wishes Augur good luck and hopes that they can adventure together again in the future when they part ways.

When he sees the figure on the road, he eyes her suspiciously as they approach.

"Greetings Katla, I'm Marcus. It seems the gods were correct as we had to part ways with our companion who was able to call upon the gods to help heal our wounds. I will warn you though, our mission is dangerous and our enemies are powerful," he says, trying to make the group sound more important than they are.

Kat saunters over to Marcus and smiles.

"My god usually values the use of brain over brawn, but when push comes to shove...well he is someone you would like in your corner!"

She finishes spinning the talisman around and lets it dangle from her wrist. The gold sheen catches your eye, as well as the odd form of the trinket. It resembles that of two snakes, circling one another to form an 'S' shape, and biting the tail of the other. You can also see under her woollen tunic she wears a shirt of chainmail. At her waist is a sheathed dagger and she carries a stout oak staff in her hands.
