Yup, but I'd say he switches to detect magic any time that any other party member would stop to investigate.
I find the exploration mode designation a little restrictive. E.g., avoid-notice + search shouldn't be impossible to do together.

I personally see it as a sort of balancing of focus, because true multitasking (rather than task-switching) is a very hard thing. Plus it's for mechanical balance, more than anything. I see where you're coming from, but I also see where the design team is coming from as well.

Been meaning to do this for a while, but I finally got around to creating a PF2 house rule document and adding it to my profile. Most of the document is too put things back into what I personally interpret as the RAI. It's generally rulings in the PCs' favor, though.

I'm going to do my best to get consistently posting as of this week. Everything has settled down for the move, and today's the last day we have access to the old place, so the move MUST complete today. Been getting used to working from a new home office, too. Forgive the absence. It'll likely be a bit before I do get to this, but I'm hoping it's today. There's just a lot of stuff to read through since last I posted.

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

[[A]] Ranged strike, alchemical bomb (back square of creature so Urzok gets no splash damage.
Funny you should mention this, so let me direct you here, more specifically "If an attack with a splash weapon fails, succeeds, or critically succeeds, all creatures within 5 feet of the target (including the target) take the listed splash damage." Emphasis: mine.
It is not "the targeted square and the eight adjacent squares" like it was in 1e, it's now "the target plus all adjacent squares." So if you hit a Gargantuan creature, the splash gets ridiculous.

Jevar Shadowmantle |

Oh... yeah good catch. More stuff to painfully unlearn from 1e. Sooooo, I probably don't want to burn urzok there.
How to burn down the forest: throw a splash weapon at the tarrasque in 2e (!)

Jevar Shadowmantle |

Yeah, pretty small in the grand scheme of things, all told. And not persistent damage. But still, I'd probably generally avoid it knowing that :P

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

Well, gents, we’ve officially been playing this AP for a year.

Jevar Shadowmantle |

Nice! There aren't a ton of groups that stick together for these long hauls. I definitely appreciate this group, and the cohesiveness.

Urzok |

Woooo! :D Special thanks to the GM for steering the ship and putting in all the work to make it happen!
EDIT: I just had my Arcanist in another AP go through a similar mushroom induced hallucination... What a fun creature :)

We can fix HP better than the shield, I'll hold off on the shield block for now. Raise Shield, Power Attack. With a Fort Save on every hit, I think raging might be more trouble than it is worth this fight! I know Urzok shouldn't really be sitting there trading blows, but having Jevar become an equally viable target isn't great either!
Technically yes, but also no. Remember, Jevar can use 10 minutes and the Crafting skill to Repair your shield, just like Shakur can use 10 minutes and the Medicine skill to Treat your Wounds. The only reason I say "technically yes" is because it's true that Jevar's Crafting bonus is lower than Shakur's Medicine. That said, Shakur did just Treat Urzok's Wounds, so he won't be able to do that again for another, eh...45 minutes, give or take.

Shakur Hektat |

@GM: I do actually have Continual Recovery, so he's not immune.
The way I see shields, both as a GM and a player, is as consumables. An adventurer hoping to use a shield typically carries around several shields at a time, the same way a spellcaster carries scrolls and a thrown-weapon character carries a butt-tonne of daggers. I do agree, though, that it's one of the weirdest 1e whiplashes I've experienced.

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

@GM: I do actually have Continual Recovery, so he's not immune.
Bah! Forgot about that.

Urzok |

Wow, no kidding. I mean, it makes sense if you look at it mechanically! Once Urzok has the coin for a better shield, I think I'll look into expanding his shield repertoire. Frankly, I'd never come up with that on my own! Thanks!

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

If you want a “better shield,” you’re gonna go for the sturdy shield, line, but there’s actually some interesting gems elsewhere, like the exploding shield, which does, like, 4d6 piercing in a 15’ cone when it’s destroyed.

Urzok |

Whoa! That's pretty cool, haha! I'll take a look into shields then the next time we get some cash.
Would have totally rerolled that first roll, GM!

Jevar Shadowmantle |

Hey everyone. I just wanted to let you know that I'm going to be away next weekend, the morning of Saturday, the 19th through sometime in the evening on the 20th (US/Pacific time). As per my typical practice I catch up and make posts the night of my return.
Hopefully it's barely or not at all noticeable since that is the weekend and I do like to catch up on the day I return.

Jevar Shadowmantle |

Do we have a rough sense of time, including all of the item identification, since the boatman only gave us 2 hours?

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

I’d say you have about an hour before the boatman comes back.

Urzok |

Long day with Open House (parents meet the teachers, so we have to put on a bit of a dog and pony show) after school today, so no posts. Please bot as needed!

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

Well would you look at that. you apparently are able to know the degree of success for a roll before you choose to use a Hero Point to reroll.
Kinda frustrating that I don't get to play minorly-sadistic mind games anymore, but it makes my life as a GM in PbP significantly easier.

Jevar Shadowmantle |

I mean, your table your rules. :)

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

Just out of curiosity, is the party just at a loss for what to do next? Should I be a bit more explicit with what you guys CAN do?

Jevar Shadowmantle |

There are more things we can go check out. The wailing house needs to wait a couple of days. We could look into Count Lowls' disappearance and Iris Hill.
I wanted to leave some room for boodiddly and shakur to post before pushing on.

A day for the Wailing House, to be more precise.
Also, there is also Fort Hailcourse and potentially doing a stake-out for the Thrushmoor Terror, since she only shows up at night. And investigating the Glowing Jill.

Urzok |

On the call to rest: my bad, I thought we went to the smokehouse before heading to bed!
I too was giving the others a chance to chime in, but if we are looking to press on, I say we visit this fort next! If we have the resources after that, then a stake-out for the Terror too! :D

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

But sure, I'M the problem here.
Just checking, but this is in-character frustrations, not out-of-character, right?

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

"Are there any preparations we should make? We could take the day to prepare, do our nighttime stake out, then hit the Fort at dusk the following day," Urzok suggests.
Eh.....Why not. I'll let you guys spend the rest of the day doing shopping if you so wish.
If I could get everybody to look over the inventory sheet for anything that their character would wish to keep so that I have a good idea about what to sell. Anything not held by a specific PC will be assumed to be sold.
If y'all could just type a quick post once you go over the sheet, I'd be much obliged.

Jevar Shadowmantle |

Jevar has claimed every alchemical item on the sheet that he doesn't have a recipe for (under the assumption that he'll derive it next significant downtime). Happy to hand off said items after he gets them written down in his formula book.
GM, do you want me delete rows off of the sheet when I know an item has been used up permanently? Everything claimed has gone onto my character sheet, so if it's gone, it's gone.

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

Well, there is a specific page to move things to for when they're used up. I would prefer something be moved there rather than just being completely deleted.

Shakur Hektat |

Nothing unclaimed piques Shakur's interest, but he does want to keep the Elixir of Life, just in case somebody needs full-on emergency healing when Shakur's already out.

Jevar Shadowmantle |

Ah, I missed that. I'll go over it soon and move some things there.

Shakur Hektat |

Remember to buy the darkvision elixir if we want to go that route!!!
11gp
Shakur will buy 1 scroll of Mirror Image (thanks sorc dedication!), 1 scroll of see invisibility, and a darkvision elixir.

And I put those in the Inventory Sheet just so I have a place to keep track of it.

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

Just to be clear, Jevar, those were scrolls you were purchasing, yes? If so, then you'll need to make separate checks to scribe it into your spellbook.

Jevar Shadowmantle |

Right, assuming we're going with "suggested DC" (18 for 2nd level)
Learn a spell (Arcana), Darkvision, DC18: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18
Learn a spell (Arcana), Knock, DC18: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13
Learn a spell (Arcana), Resist Energy, DC18: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18
Learn a spell (Arcana), Vomit Swarm , DC18: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32
Learn a spell (Arcana) Water Breathing, DC18: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (2) + 12 = 14
Per magical shorthand the failures can be tried again in 1 week
Learn cost 6gp
Scroll cost 12gp

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

Yes, it would be the DC 18, so that’s a success (spending 6 gp), crit fail (wasting 3 gp), success (spending 6 gp), crit success (spending 3 gp), and failure (net loss/gain of 0).
So that whole thing cost you a total of 78 gp (60 for the scrolls and 18 for the expended/wasted materials for Learning the Spells). Considering you didn’t really purchase much last time y’all went shopping, I’m pretty sure you could actually afford all that.
Put the scrolls in the inventory.

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

And there's the last of the inventory updates I have to make.

Jevar Shadowmantle |

I thought crit fail was -10, not -5?

Jevar Shadowmantle |

And yeah, can definitely afford, sitting on ~110gp.
Re: scrolls on the inventory - do we really want to track *personal* inventory in two places? I get party spoils, and tracking distribution so that two characters don't claim and "use" the same thing.
BTW, do you use hero-lab? If you've created a campaign there I can share jevar into it (and then track there).

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

I thought crit fail was -10, not -5?
Correct, but you also rolled a nat 1. A 13 is a normal failure; the nat 1 bumps it down to a critical failure.

If I'm being honest, I'm not entirely sure when I started doing that and for what reason. I think it was for the sake of keeping track of bulk or so I personally don't get super surprised with one thing or another, but at this point I'm not super sure...

Jevar Shadowmantle |

And yeah, can definitely afford, sitting on ~110gp.
Actually more than that (hadn't factored in the platinum pieces). Well, I'm spending it now, next up saving for 3rd-level spells in the future.

Jevar Shadowmantle |

As far as the Mushroom Witch's Formula Book goes, I'm not going to bother transferring things. Jevar is going to treat it as his second formula book (overflow), and he can add more to it when the need arises.

Jevar Shadowmantle |

final minutiae as I look over Jevar's character sheet:
* Jevar will have to leave his repair kit back at the room with his expanded alchemist's lab to avoid being encumbered
* I haven't been tracking rations or eating costs at all. Let me know if we're not hand-waving that or setting some weekly/monthly living cost (and how much would have been consumed at briarstone before living costs).

Um...Yeah, I don't see anything that talks about needing to make a check when using another formula book like you do with spellbooks, so I think you're good.

It's handwaved. There's already enough bookkeeping; I don't want to add the cost of living into everything else.
