May I ask what means you speak of? I haven't found a good way to get a companion other than through class levels, and I might be missing something. I do know of the Animal Ally feat but that requires a pre-req feat (so I couldn't do it until I had 3 class levels) and doesn't include bear in the potential list of critters.

EDIT: Long story short I (as player) was going primarily with the creepy scary thing that is physically weak and makes creepy poppets, but she (as Cindy) has let me know that she wants a bear. Ideas on the easiest way to do that, along with at least some progression so it's not a lvl1 companion forever would be greatly appreciated. Don't forget if we're only doing class levels every couple CR raises, a series of feats isn't really that viable since we only get feats at odd class levels.

monsters get feats too, you could swap some of those out...

And feats at odd class levels add up to one every 4 CR, but then that's _all_ your feats.

Not sure what other mechanisms are available for Animals

Nature soul+animal ally. Boom. Animal companion with two feats and no other pre-reqs besides being level 4. If you then take boon companion, you have a full progression animal companion for the price of three feats tacked onto any build. Expensive but good. Nature soul grants a few little extra benefits but it's not that big.

That was my first thought, and it's the best way mechanically, but Cindy really wants a bear and Animal Ally only allows " badger, bird, camel, cat (small), dire rat, dog, horse, pony, snake (viper), or wolf"

If you were to allow me to add bear to the list, I'd be all for it.
Also would it be possible to swap one of my existing feats for Nature Soul if I don't pick a class that has 2 feats at lvl1?

Yeah it follows the normal hex range of 30 ft. It functions as the heavens leap hex: "The shaman is adept at creating tiny tears in the fabric of space, and temporarily stitching them together to reach other locations through a limited, one-way wormhole. As a standard action, the shaman can designate herself or a single ally that she can see who is within 30 feet of her. She can move that creature as if it were subject to jester’s jaunt. Once targeted by this hex, the ally cannot be the target of this hex again for 24 hours."

And yes you can fly with a medium or heavy load, taking the normal penalties, including speed, for the load.

I didn't bother taking the jaunt, as it seems like it might be more useful for our undead orc friend at the moment.

I'm getting confused now. I can re-scare any of them that haven't yet passed one of their saves, as only saving makes them immune for a while...but I've lost track, and looking back to find out I'm not sure which rolls are for which enemies in past GM posts.

Is the "boss" one still fearable or is he immune now?

OK I think I've figured out the level up but need GM approval:

I feel like Mesmerist (Fey Trickster and/or Dreamstalker) fits Cindy's character much better than Druid, but I would be remiss if I didn't get her a bear.

If I were to use my lvl 1 feat to get her Nature Soul could I perhaps trade her existing Toughness feat for Animal Ally? Could easily be RP'd that she has to give up/share some of her fortitude to gain the animal from The Green Mother.

Hmmm... I could be ok with something like that as I'm in favor of supporting mesmerist, which is more in line with the rest of Cindy's character. Sure I'll allow that. This party already has a problem with being too defensive and not very offensive (just like monsters instead of PCs) so fights tend to take a VERY long time! Which I don't really mind. I just don't want you guys to feel it's too slow and sloggy.

The whole party: "We have amazing defensive abilities almost never allowed on a pc!"

Me: "Cool! Now go kill the enemy."

Almost the whole party: "Pew pew! 3 damage!"

Hey now, 3 is a very respectable number. It would be entirely reasonable if we were fight appropriate threats for characters with 1 PC level.

Also, don't forget that the 3 damage usually has a bunch of riders tagging along with it (neg levels the most obvious).

Damn. I was excited about the plan to lose that elemental on the shadow plane "by accident" while she was trying to put him somewhere safe "to play".

Just re-read shadow walk and it requires dim light or darker, so I guess that's not happening on a snow covered mountain during the day. Thinkin that's a pretty bright place.

Nah I wouldn't need it often, it's very situational. Also with the class and the templates I plan on getting I'll end up with it soon enough.

I don't think you can aid with reach zero either without entering the elemental's square but I think we can say you did that since it isn't going to take the aoo while panicked.

"In melee combat, you can help a friend attack or defend by distracting or interfering with an opponent. If you’re in position to make a melee attack on an opponent that is engaging a friend in melee combat, you can attempt to aid your friend as a standard action. You make an attack roll against AC 10. If you succeed, your friend gains either a +2 bonus on his next attack roll against that opponent or a +2 bonus to AC against that opponent’s next attack (your choice), as long as that attack comes before the beginning of your next turn. Multiple characters can aid the same friend, and similar bonuses stack."
