Orlog BrightShield
Orlog eyes go back and forth from Bydar and Christian. Then when the question about the taxes is raised, he decides to speak again. "The taxes are as low as I can make then without damaging the economical survivability of the kingdom."
Brand Oluffson
Grinning at the exchange, Brandt smiles, Aye, lets hold off on adding religious iconography to our colors for now. We've not got a unified religion, as I follow Old Deadeye.
Considering Orlogg's words, Would it not make sense to start with a more average tax rate then lower them should we find an excess of coin in our kingdom? Just thinking about that.
I think the Inn is the best starting point, so let's agree on that? I do want us to work on our defenses, and as Lady Sapphira says, this fort would be an excellent castle. I think this is important especially if Pitax has eyes on these lands, even if they don't know we're here. Hopefully that will dissuade them from being too hungry for our lands.

Bydar makes a note of his companion's religion and nods as it is good to know.
Sheepishly, "I think I'll leave any suggestions for the naming of the inn to others."
"Do you think it is more likely Pitax will see whatever we build here as someplace to be annexed rather than traded with?"
Lord Christian D'Elagante
As Bydar speaks his mind about religion, Christian looks on with a firm neutral demeanor.
and you just proved my point.
He pauses and politely looks to the others for their input.
When all have spoken...
If all are in agreement on the name Charis then let it be so. If anyone has another option speak now. All other items needing a name are tabled until we find the time to discuss them further.
He looks around the group.
Taxes should remain at the low rate for now. It is a good point about having excess coin for later but what we found below should help us with that problem for now. Those coming here for a second chance most likely will not have a lot of coin on them.
Let us build the inn. We can continue to build housing and work on the defenses as well.
Does anyone have any problems with exploring the caverns more. I feel it should be completely mapped less we get some unexpected surprises.
Syretia
Syretia seizes on the change of subject, saying "I'd quite like to explore the caverns! As you say, they could be dangerous if left alone, but I'm curious to see what other sorts of historical or cultural artifacts remain."
Bydar
Bydar notices the walls go up on Lord Christian's face We may not agree on some things, but just because we see things differently does not make either of us less good a man. He's got the making of a good leader... maybe in time, a great one. If I'm to follow, I must accept his flaws and hope he can accept mine.
"For both safety of the people, and to learn of the full histories, yes. I too think we should explore the caverns." Bydar says "It's fascinating really. The division of old and even older.. the styles shift." He tells Syretia, "There is a Shrine down there, and some very interesting designs."
Brand Oluffson
Brandt observes the back and forth, quieted again, until Syretia speaks, There was a thing we did not disturb either down there which we had no idea about either. Perhaps you'd be willing to take a look while we're there.
Syretia
"Truly?" Syretia's focus zeroes in on Brandt and Bydra, and she fires off a series of questions without waiting for answers. "Can you tell me what it looked like? Were there offerings at the shrine? What did they look like? What sort of iconography was present? Lord D'Elagante, I simply have to inspect this shrine. Do you know when we plan to go?"
As she speaks, she rummages through her pockets for several seconds before frowning and giving up her efforts. "Would it be possible to acquire something to write with? I appear to have temporarily misplaced my journal and quill."
Bydar
Bydar smiles at her enthusiasm "It was, at one time, a shrine to Gorum, but the disfigurements and defacing indicate they turned against the god. It is my hope it might become a Shrine again to one god or another."
Then a nod at Brandt's comment, "The red orb, very ominious."
At her request, he offers his own quill, ink, and a few sheets of paper, "Here, borrow these. Return when you like."
Orlog BrightShield
"Since it is underground, I was wondering if we good convert that one to a Shrine to Torag. But before we get ahead of ourselves, let's make sure the area is cleared and completely safe." Orlog grabs a few more bite of food, finishes his drink and stand. "So, if we a re done, let's get back to work!"
Lord Christian D'Elagante
Christian nods when Syretia asked about heading back to the caverns.
When everyone is ready...I do not see any reason why we could not head back now.
Turning his attention to the dwarf.
Master BrightShield. A shrine could be a possibility...I agree that we should clear it first.
So if we anyone should need supplies...get them now we are heading down when all are ready.
Syretia
Syretia gratefully accepts the writing materials and carefully stows them in an empty belt pouch. "Wonderful! I am ready now."
Bydar

Turning his attention to the dwarf.
Master BrightShield. A shrine could be a possibility...I agree that we should clear it first.
"Wonderful, I hoped it could be salvaged" Bydar is glad to hear both agreed with his own hopes of making it a shrine again to one god or another, "After things are cleared out, if I can help touch up sculptures that meet your approval or the like, Orlag, let me know. I haven't put chisel to stone in awhile."
Syretia gratefully accepts the writing materials and carefully stows them in an empty belt pouch. "Wonderful! I am ready now."
With all of them ready, he nods to Sapphira "Lady Sapphira, I assume you are staying topside? I think you'll find most here of goodly character. Let us know if you need anything."
To Narthropple, he nods "Master Narthropple, I definitely don't suggest you go down again. You still need a day or two of rest and food to recover. In fact I'd like to check on that recovery when we return. With your permission." The halfling had been very close to death.
And to Cavan he pats the carpenter on the shoulder, "Cavan my friend, if I do nothing else good in this world, it pleases me that I have had a part in restoring a good man by Shelyn's kindness. Congratulations again. I know your craft will bring the beauty of growth to this seed of a dream"
Sapphira_NPC
"You assume correctly," she jauntily replies to Bydar. "Even if you swore that there was another hidden treasure room down there, I could not be convinced to return. I am satisfied with what I've come away with, and I happily leave the rest to you."
Sapphira's lips briefly quiver as a thought crosses her mind, likely wondering if there could be another treasure room and potentially reconsidering her refusal. She does not revisit the issue, so presumably she reaffirms her decision.
"If it's any comfort, I didn't encounter any other creatures down there besides those horned beasts," she continues. "I can't imagine any ancient traps remain down there, or else the brutes would have blundered into them long ago. And I question whether they even had enough brain behind that singular eye to concoct their own traps."
Mister Haane Pinkjaw
|
Mr. Pink gives a slight nod to Sapphira in agreement with her decision to stay and then confirms to the others that he is ready to disembark.
"Time to trek to our tempting trove and tally our treasures."
Lord Christian D'Elagante
Christian gives a reassuring nod towards all of the people that would be staying behind. With a slight smile...
...keep things secured for us. Please. It would be nice to see familar faces when we pop our heads back in.
As the group starts to head out, Christian stops in front of Cavan.
I look forward to seeing your work come to fruition. Maybe a drawing or two...just so we can better visualize what you have in mind.
The mercenary extend his hand out to the former leper. His hand has no glove or covering of any kind. Just open skin. The trust is evident to all.
Brand Oluffson
Hefting his pack and axe, Brandt stands, while Fenrir casts him a sideways glance from under the chair Brandt previously occupied. We must be close to done with these caverns, but the sooner the better I say.
DM Vayelan
Narthropple pardons himself to meet with Garess to discuss the condition of the defenses and guards.
Sapphira slips away to explore the fort and watch the people from afar.
"One question before you depart, m'lords," Cavan says with a bow before the party departs. "Should I keep this...miracle you've bestowed upon me a secret? While it would surely bolster morale if the folk knew the wonders you could work, I imagine you would also be inundated with petitioners asking for healing. I would not want to unleash that upon you without your permission."
Lord Christian D'Elagante
I think best to keep this miracle...just that a miracle, a mystery and here say. I think right now is not the time to be over whelmed by the masses. In time when we can help we can do so openly. I also do not want to start a war with the Church of Abadar when we start to undercut their healing practices. We can do more when we are set and have the full backing of a church or two. I want to do more...but we must proceed with caution.

Bydar rubs his forehead, "Lord Christian and I, as you saw, disagree on some matters. We both want what we think is best for people and land in our own ways. Cavan, it is ultimately up to you, but one thing you said worries me. You said this 'miracle you've bestowed'.. it is a miracle, yes. But I have little to do with it save as a cupbearer. I was , to be honest, like a packmule carrying a precious gift from another. I will not risk folks confusing the porter for the provider. I will not steal Shelyn's good works for my own glory of which I am not worthy. Ultimately, you say what you will, this is still a River Kingdom eh? But I would suggest if any ask, tell them a goodly goddess showed you kindness. If they press, tell them Shelyn sent the miracle out of love and perhaps to encourage all to see the power of kindness. If they press yet again, tell them a wandering priest who wishes all glory to his goddess insisted you not say. Be sure to stress that wandering part, and it is true, as I am about to wander down below."
A look to Lord Christian and the others. "I think that will prevent a deluge of those who seek healing before we have the means to take large crowds of ill and serve them properly. It is possible we might need a hospital of some sort one day if this area becomes known for healers. Perhaps men of learning along with clergy to tend. A long way off I know, but something to consider in the future?"
Brand Oluffson
Watching the byplay between the two men with interest, Brandt chimes in, "A noble goal indeed Bydar. Caring for those who cannot care for themselves is a generous calling, one which is oft ignored in this world. I do understand your desire for anonymity at this point."
Turning to Cavan, For my part man, it matters not to where the credit goes, but that you are well, and a trusted member of our community here. I would ask you keep us mindful of that as we all move forward. Honesty and simplicity can be easily forgotten by those of us who work miracles, magics, or live by deed of arms.
Suddenly realizing how much he has spoken, Brandt abruptly cuts off and attempts to fade into the background, drawing his color-shifting cloak tight around himself.
Syretia
Syertia watches Sapphira make her exit with a curious expression on her face, though Cavan's question steals away her attention. The corner of Syretia's mouth briefly twitches downward at the mention of the church of Abadar, but she does not interrupt the dialogue. If the Church of Abadar wanted a say in how this kingdom cares for the least of its citizens, they ought to have sent aid of some sort.
DM Vayelan
"I will follow your discretion, m'lords," the carpenter says with another bow, "But you should know this: the church of Shelyn will soon find many new followers hereabouts. I strongly doubt they will seek any stake in rulership, any more than they might go about starting trouble with any Abadarans, but there will be folks with questions about this goddess."
With that, Cavan excuses himself to begin work measuring the frames for the first cabins at the foot of the hill.
Thus, you are left to the business of your second expedition into the labyrinth.
Bydar
Watching the byplay between the two men with interest, Brandt chimes in, "A noble goal indeed Bydar. Caring for those who cannot care for themselves is a generous calling, one which is oft ignored in this world. I do understand your desire for anonymity at this point."
A grateful nod to Brandt for his understanding. The young cleric believes his goddess of praise and gratitude, but certainly doesn't wish to take more than his due as her servant.
He does smile a bit as Brandt seems to grow almost embarrassed about giving good and earnest advice.
And there the priest is truly touched to hear it, "Thank you, Cavan. Your words bring me joy. When I return, I'll share some of her teachings to those who wish to hear them. May Shelyn bless your work so that the beauty in your heart finds expression."
With that, Cavan excuses himself to begin work measuring the frames for the first cabins at the foot of the hill. Thus, you are left to the business of your second expedition into the labyrinth.
Bydar looks over at the others, "He's a good man. I look forward to seeing his work." a nod to the others "How shall we position ourselves in the caverns? Much as before? It seems we are all eager to go once more."
Syretia
"Whatever your previous plan was seems to have served well, as not only did you survive, but you left the caverns with more people than you entered! I would just ask to not be in the front. I'm not defenseless, but I'm hardly a warrior like Master Oluffson or Lord D'Elagante." Syretia pauses for a moment but starts again suddenly, saying "Oh! Did you have any magical items you wanted me to examine before we leave?"
Orlog BrightShield
Orlog looks at the new member of the group. "Don't worry, I'm the front line. My shield is there to block the monster to reach you while you unleash your arcane fury" He taps his shield for good mesure and prepare to walk back down into the tunnels.
Brand Oluffson
There was that one scroll none of us could figure out, where did we put that? Brandt looks to Bydar to see if he holds it.
The other thing is still in a chamber below, we took no chances with it and left it alone.
Syretia
Syretia nods and, after accepting the scroll, her odd eye glows faintly for a few seconds as she examines it. "I'll be glad to take a look at it once we get down there!"
Once we enter the tunnels, I'll cast mage armor on myself. I'm going to just mark off the spell slot and adjust my AC.
Mister Haane Pinkjaw
|
Whenever the group is assembled and ready. Mr. Pink & Mr. Black will lead the way back into the labyrinth. He informs Syretia of his intent before departing ahead.
Same scouting tactic as before.
"Syretia stays safe and sound, surrounded by strong soldiers. I shall scout and send statement of scenes seen."
Syretia
"That makes sense!"
DM Vayelan
Now joined by Syretia, the party descends back into the tunnels beneath your fort. Along the way, your new companion works to decipher the last, mysterious scroll. With a touch of her own magic, she reveals that the scroll is enscribed with with the spell comprehend languages.
Misters Black and Pink lead the way, and in about an hour's time you again stand in the old, defiled shrine where you met Sapphira. The once secret door to the hidden treasury remains open, and within you can see the nearly two dozen man-high clay urns and other relics of Iobaria and Koloran.
The chamber is cramped with twenty-some clay urns, each the height of a man, etched with archaic symbols and motifs similar to those out in Sapphira's room. Two of the urns have been toppled and partially broken, spilling their contents upon the floor: many hundreds, if not thousands of coins.
What's more, upon the far wall of the treasury, hangs a breastplate and battleaxe of great size, both wrought of bronze. A number of human-sized suits of armor have been heaped in the corners and along the walls, showing signs of terrible damage that render them all but useless. Only one cast aside piece, a shirt of mail, seems to be serviceable.
Finally, the oddest item you espy is a rust-red sphere, set upon a stone pedestal.
So far, these are the landmarks you have discovered and recorded:
branching passages, defiled shrine of Gorum, hidden treasury, beastmen's lair, sinkhole, and the collapsed tunnel.
Syretia
How much were all the coins worth? Did they all get collected or counted?
Syretia sweeps into the room, eyes wide, and she bounces from one symbol to another as she tries to identify and interpret what they could all mean.
History?: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13
Finally, she comes to the sphere, and examines it and its pedestal. Slowly turning about the room, looking for magic, Syretia fires off another string of questions to the others. "Has anyone touched the stone? What about the pedestal? Does it look like anything has changed or moved? Who saw it first? Did you see anything around that looks like it could be a warning?"
Casting identify on the stone: 1d20 + 15 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 15 + 10 = 29
DM Vayelan
Mr. Pink can readily confirm that nothing has changed about the treasury.
Every last spilled coin remains where it sat, and the rust-red sphere is unchanged.
It's granite pedestal includes a single inscription: sybrynja.
If you are fluent in Iobarian, you can read the translation spoiler.
If you are fluent in Skald, Hallit, or Cyclopean, you can read the translation spoiler with a DC 15 Linguistics check.
You suspect it is actually crafted from some manner of skymetal.
You can make a Knowledge (Engineering) check to identify the properties of this skymetal.
Syretia
Syretia frowns at the inscription and sounds the word out, frustrated at her ability to recognize the language but not understand it. Briefly, she considers retrieving the magical scroll she deciphered earlier, but decides against it as she returns her attention to the orb.
Once she realizes what the orb is, the significance of the inscription becomes clear to her. "I'd only read about these...never thought I'd actually see one, much less find it lying in a hole in the ground!"
Syretia considers the orb for a few more seconds, before reaching out and picking it up. She turns to the others, excitement in her eyes, and says what she hopes is in fact the magic word. "Sybrynja!"
DM Vayelan
Despite her unfamiliarity with the language, Syretia's pronunciation of the command word proves satisfactory enough to activate the magic sphere.
The rust-red metal loses cohesion and reverts to a liquid form, flowing along Syretia's arm and beneath her explorer's garb. In but a few seconds, her entire body is coated in a second skin composed of this strange, pliable metal.
Lord Christian D'Elagante
I did mention about taking the treasure but nothing really came of it from anyone else...so it is ok. LOL
"We escort our guest to the exit. We can grab what items we have found on out way out. Drop off and resupply if needed. Sound good?"
Christian follows along with his head moving form places to place. Trying hard to locate any threat that might be hidden in plain sight.
He nods with a slight smile.
I honestly know very little about this orb. That is why you are here. This is your first mystery.
Mister Haane Pinkjaw
|
Upon seeing Syretia throw caution to the wind, Mr. Pink follows up with the appropriate Iobarian translation for the inscription after the seemingly harmless effect takes place.
"Sybrynja... Ancient Iobarian as in "Armor, Swim". Seems to spontaneously serve Syretia."
Syretia
1 person marked this as a favorite.
Syretia laughs merrily as the orb activates, and, after taking a few seconds to admire her new appearance, returns it to its original form. "Mystery solved! I am very well, thank you!" she says, trying, and failing, to take on a more serious tone. "This orb is a magical armor made from quickiron, a very special metal. You just hold onto it, say the command word, and suddenly you're wearing magical armor that's lighter than any cuirass! My guess is that the armor you all wear already offers greater protection than it can, but I quite like it."
She listens closely to Mr. Pink's translation and then nods. "That's fairly straightforward for a command word, isn't it? As long as you speak the language, I suppose. One of my instructors had a statue on his desk that lit up when you gave the command. He must have thought he seemed very imperious when he used it to light up the room, but the word was just Aklo for 'mushroom.'" Syretia shakes her head at the memory, smiling. "Never had the heart to tell him."
Orlog BrightShield
"Very nice, I beleive this is some sort of Skymetal. A bit like Adamantine cam from the sky. But this one has property completely different from Adamantine as you can see, but it is still a very rare metal to encounter." Orlog walks closer to Syretia and give the armor a very profesionnal poke with his finger. "Oh, how I would like to be able to work with that metal."
Brand Oluffson
Both horrified and enthralled by the moving metal Brandt gasps, that is very unnerving and strange, but wonderful at the same time.. Brandt grins at Orlogg's reaction to the wondrous metal.
Since we've determined what this thing is, shall we proceed deeper into the chambers of this hidden place?
Lord Christian D'Elagante
Christian looks around the room one more time before he answers.
Agreed. We should move on. This mystery has been solved.
The young man looks to group.
Same formation as before. We should head back to the intersection of tunnels that lead to here. From that point we can take another path and see where it leads to. I would say since we turned left to come this way we should go straight instead. Sound like a plan?
we came into the complex and traveled to the first intersection. We turned right and came on the first Halfling. We continues and came to the second intersection. We originally turned left....instead we are going to go straight. Which according to my map and the description I posted in the discussion...This should be tunnel number 5
Syretia
"Agreed!" Syretia stows the orb into a pouch on her belt and quickly falls into position again.
Before Mr. Pink leaves them behind, she reaches out to grab his attention. "Mister Pink, if you think you may be going into a dangerous situation, please come back before going too far. I can help you be even sneakier!"
DM Vayelan
Before departing the treasury, you take the time to more thoroughly catalog the other items stored within. The breastplate and battleaxe mounted upon the far wall, both of large sized and made of bronze, register as magic, as does a human-sized mail shirt decorated with pieces of polished agate.
+1 large bronze breastplate, +1 large bronze battleaxe, and Lesser Luck Mail.
Once the time comes to set down and count out the contents of the nearly two-dozen man-high urns, your final tallies arrive at 12,309cp, 5,459sp, and 1,719gp.
.....
The straight passage plunges into the unexplored, leading away from the areas you have already charted. As you press forward, Mr. Pink and Brandt both identify that something large has passed through here recently.
Please roll Survival to more definitively identify the tracks and their direction.
You eventually reach a cramped antechamber that houses another intersection, with the main passage continuing straight and a side passage leading to the left.
Brand Oluffson
Brandt examines the trakcs, shaking his head in the negative,Something came this way, but I'm not entirely sure what it was or when it did... We should be careful.
Survival: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
+2 if Favored enemy Giant comes into play
