...Why haven't I been getting updates from the Gameplay thread, then???

I'd fully intended to participate.

Hrm I'm not sure. Did you ever dot into gameplay?

I'm sorry, I'm a little confused; when is this going to start?

My apologies. I did not intend to leave any players out and thought it was clear when the game had started.

You are most welcome to hop in immediately to the Gameplay thread and join us.

The second quest has just begun (and it and the remaining quests should move along much quicker than the first), so feel free to hop in, if you'd like. Although the GM is supposed to commence with the first quest, I see no requirement that a player must play the quests in any particular order.

Indeed, the instructions for running the quests contemplates players finishing fewer than all of the quests and playing them later: "A player who completes one or more of the quests receives a Chronicle sheet for What The Helms Hide, noting which quests they finished. They can later play the rest of the quests in the series, earning greater rewards (see the Variable Rewards boon on the Chronicle sheet at the end of this series). If the character receiving the Chronicle sheet for What The Helms Hide gains XP from another Chronicle sheet, they can no longer earn additional rewards for playing the other What The Helms Hide quests. What The Helms Hide can be replayed for credit, but the credit must be applied to a different character each time."

Salvadore is re-set and ready to go.

On a side note, just curious, did we miss anything else in that cave loot-wise? I know we can't go back, I was just curious.

No, you've gotten everything in both of the quests thus far.

I am on vacation this week. I will be keeping up with my games off and on via RSS, but please do not hold anything up waiting for me. There should be botting instructions in my profile. Do not hesitate to use them to move things forward.

Heads up - I will be at a convention Friday through Sunday. As the sun doesn’t set up here in the summer, neither do the games stop. I will post when possible, but at a slower rate than usual. Please don’t hesitate to bot me after 24 hours if I haven’t posted.

Just a heads up, I am heading out to cub scout camp with my son this Thursday, getting back sometime Sunday. Thus, my last post this week will likely be Wednesday (or early Thursday) and my next will be the following Monday.

We are getting close to the end of the scenario. I anticipate that even with my absence over long weekend, that we will be wrapped up within the next 2 weeks.

Between packing tonight, traveling, and doing con related things, I will be busy with GenCon from now until Sunday. I don't expect to be caught up to speed until Monday or Tuesday.

If any of y'all will be playing organized play at GenCon and want to meet up, send me a PM! I enjoy the tables much more when playing with a friend.

I will continue to read posts through the RSS feed and may drop in for a post, but please bot me whenever it becomes necessary.

@ Veilblade - Thanks for the heads up. Safe travels and happy gaming!

@ All - Anyone may feel free to bot Veilblade. If no one does so, I will do so with my next post. Salvadore is also now up.

Damn that wolf! Hit my AC exactly then my CMD exactly (full defense was still in operation). Regardless, someone else will need to drag Waggi's butt out of the drool/fire as I'll be out of town on a fishing trip until Sunday night EST.

Regards to Waggi's next turn though I'll likely just have to repeat last round and go full defense and stand and 5' step away again, unless of course the hound is dealt with before hand.

I'm not a good person to answer that. I have always considered multi-classing to be too much of a loss of class abilities to be worth it, but I also mostly play casters.

I like the focus that you put into your play-style with the character, but I don't know anything about the samurai class. Will a level or two dip be worth the lost/delay of an ability you like with the class just for a little diversity?

The touch AC on these things is nuts for a tier 1-2 game! I can safely say I've never been a fan of them having swarms in such low level games, its almost unfair if you don't have aoe spells.

True, the touch AC is very high for the CR and I understand the dislike of swarms, particularly at low levels. However, this party has been very effective with only 4 PCs taking actions so far!

If there is interest, I'd be happy to share my thoughts on the encounter design after this initial quest has concluded (so that I don't possibly spoil anything).

I see now that I failed to follow up with an explanation earlier. My apologies.

As the author of the first quest (my first Paizo publication), I can tell you that the decision to use swarms for a low level encounter was one I that I wrestled with. Hopefully, the following provides you with some insight into my thought processes.

In selecting an opponent, among the goals that I wanted to keep in mind were:
1) to make the encounter fun and interesting;
2) to create a credible threat and challenge for the PCs to overcome;
3) (knowing it could be replayed) to allow for alternate methods of overcoming the challenge; and,
4) to adhere to the lore of the setting.

Continued explanation under spoiler as it provides info available only to the GM and may ruin future replay value:

Knowing the encounter was in a museum, I knew I wanted to present a different kind of challenge, protecting the artifacts rather than simply eliminating a threat. Destructive insects are an ongoing concern/threat for many museums and once I discovered that shrew flies had only ever been mentioned in the setting book detailing Korvosa (making them somewhat unique!), I decided I wanted to make the encounter work.

While I realize that many low level PCs may not be equipped to hit or damage swarms, there were a number of factors built into the encounter to mitigate these concerns:

1) The swarms are focused primarily on destroying artifacts rather than damaging PCs;
2) The number of artifacts and alternative opportunities to earn Discovery points are such that the party has a fair chance of succeeding even if a number of the artifacts are destroyed;
3) The encounter has a built in time-limit, after which museum staff appears with means to disperse the swarm;
4) The swarm's destructive abilities do not apply to attended objects (such as those held by PCs);
5) Creative players can (and have in play) used items they have acquired (or some of those described as being within the room) to thwart the shrew flies ability to inflict damage;
6) The four-player adjustment swaps out the swarms for a single opponent; and,
7) After 10 seasons of scenarios, many experienced PFS players have been told to expect to encounter swarms and how to equip to deal with them.

Even with the above factors, I still went back and forth about including swarms for low-levels before settling upon using them.

Having played the scenario once and run it multiple times, I think I made the right decision (but respect those who disagree). I always enjoy seeing the skill and creativity of my fellow players!

Please know that the feedback I have received, both in discussions and in play, has been greatly appreciated. I am always looking to improve my writing and I know that Paizo also appreciates constructive feedback, so I encourage any of you to post your thoughts, PM me, or, better yet, leave a review!

Thanks again for playing!

Re-Swarms:

Thanks for your explanation. They certainly fit well with the situation and yes, I didn't find myself in personal danger just with some frustration being only at 1xp and a non caster. Swarms need consumables to deal with and fresh characters at best have one or two acids or fires on them. Their very high touch AC just makes those expendables often scorching the floor and providing splash only.

The other reasons and set up you explained made perfect sense and I agree with the fail safes you set up. I just find it frustrating in general. A party of fresh level 1s would unlikely be able to defeat them, unless they had some casters with area damage.

I guess sometimes you just can't win them all! I enjoyed Waggi's time here!

Chronicles are now up.

Please let me know if there are any changes or corrections. Once I receive confirmation from everyone on their chronicles, I will place this campaign on inactive. Otherwise, I will place it on inactive in one week.

Thank you all again for a fun game with some colorful characters and for your creativity and feedback. I had a lot of fun and look forward to sharing a table with each of you in the future!

I have only a vague notion of what the Samurai's class features are at later levels. I should probably see what they get between now and 12th level. Good advice.

Thanks for the game, GM. This was a cool scenario and you ran it well. The boons are cool too! I think Veilblade will buy that dark ring before too long.

I wonder when the PF2 boon will come online? That means there most be more of those. I should hunt down more season 10 scenarios!!
