Jek looks over the other deaders, none are bound like they were. They all appear dead, some from violence others diseases that are common to Hive dwellers. He isn’t able to figure out any commonalities between them.

Heal DC 16:
One of the bodies doesn’t have a mark on her and no diagnosable determination of death.

Perception 20:
One of the bodies doesn’t have a mark on her and a rime of diamond dust coats the eyes. Behind the right ear is black ink mark.

The guard whimpers as Vaascht threatens him trying to talk through the gag, ”Immn oon’ knoo. Ivv kikcah mmmaark inphoo ffaahem.”

Casting detect magic, the Gith looks at the woman on the floor.

But doesn't see anything of note, just a faint aura.

Walking back over to the guard, Vaascht prepares to take off the gag, "Let's have a quiet chat, yes, cooperate and we'll all have much better day."

The guard doesn't speak loudly but he's obviously shaking, "Please don't kill me! I'll lann you to Imogen's operation. I'm not guarding anything, the dusties don't come through the portal. My job is to kick the deaders off to the terrace, if one has an ink spot on their right ear I go get Alver and he and some of the hobs take em into the citadel. That's all I know they don't tell me what they do with em."

This would be a great time to have a gold coin and sleight of hand

Jek checks the other party members. Then, out of curiosity, he checks the guard.

Jek does not find a mark behind the man's ear. The man squirms a bit, "Uh.. he's a man, not one of those plane-touched if that's what you're getting at. Uh, oh! A spellslinger, he worships some high up Abyssal lord, I don't know which one."

He gulps thinking, "The Citadel of Fire, ha ha... there's about 20 of us illuminated, they're loyal to Green Marvent. Uh he's still in Plague-Mort not here, Imogen, she's a Gith like your blood, she reports to him. Then there's Trent he's Imogen's right hand and Brandal, he's always working with Alver on whatever it is they do."

He continues, "There's about 15 hobs, they're led by Hurfang. I don't know what her deal is but I think they're just mercenaries. Oh and one goblin, she's their cook and makes the best BBQ you ever tasted."

Know planes DC 10:
Plague-Mort refers to the gate-town that leads from the Outlands to the Abyss.

Nik:
You're sent up to the overvault to relieve Ulthdar Eighttoes from sending the anonymous deaders to the Elemental Plane of Fire. When you enter you see Eighttoes not sending corpses but a group of tied up and struggling people. He turns to you and says, "Pike it all. Well I was going to burn this identity anyway." He transforms into a pox-marked grizzly bear and in short order has you pinned with his his paws. Once you're under control he transforms back into a man and quickly ties you up and sends you into the portal. Your corpse companion dutifully follows you. Bit of narration instead of combat to get you where you need to be, you wouldn't win anyway.

The portal from the Mortuary flares to life once more and a pale Aasimar drops in followed by his undead companion. Nik sees a group of bashers, the same ones he saw Eighttoes send into the portal, interrogating a tied up man. One of them is his friend Jek the courier. I take back Nik not having his gear.

Nik wriggles, trying to escape his bonds.
"A little help?"

After rolling over from wriggling, he sees his corpse companion.
"Oh, actually maybe I'm okay. Skellington, use those bony fingers to cut my ropes. Without cutting me, thanks."

The Gith stands up and watches the group converse with the newcomer after regagging the less useful but at least talkative guard. Observing the newcomer and his undead companion with some interest.

"Sounds like this Citadel is the center of our mystery, though rather well guarded for us few, and without our gear."

The bound man pales when he sees Nik and his skeleton but answers Arkynn, "Umm, Marvent sends people sometimes to rotate our numbers."

Nik stands up and dusts himself off. Pointing to the bloody skeleton standing next to him, he adds "this is Skellington the 3rd, but he really only listens to me, so maybe you don't need to know his name..."

Nik pauses before getting back on topic.
"Anyway, Eighttoes turned into a bear somehow and tied me up. Turned back and threw me through the portal. I was just supposed to take over for him so he could take a break. Glad he decided not to smash Skellington, or we'd have had to wait a bit for him to come through.
...I guess I can take a look at the deader, at least."

Nik casts Detect Magic and then examines the deceased blue haired tiefling carefully.

Knowledge (Arcana): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16 +1 for Necropolitan? (+1 for knowledge checks on undead creatures)

Nik knows the key to the portal at least on the Mortuary side is a red bead, unfortunately he wasn't able to get the big jar of red beads from Eighttoes before he turned into a bear.

None of the corpses are familiar to Rinika.

Hmmm I've never seen shamblers that look like these before, but I've never seen Eighttoes turn into a bear before either...

"Yeah. We should get moving before the guy who can kill with a touch comes back. Wish I hade one of the red beads to go through the portal. I want to try one thing before we move out, though."
Nik gestures and a faint wave of black light (Power Over Undead) spreads over the corpses.
if any of them are actually undead, then I can control up to 2HD of the ones that fail a DC 15 will save...

"Up shamblers. STAND UP!" Nik raises his arm dramatically as he hopes at least one of the corpses is actually undead.

Switching from hiding dice in spoilers to rolling for you for stuff, I was testing it out to see how I like it for games. But I feel like they get lost and people miss out on info. Apologies in advance when I get your mods wrong. That doesn’t mean you can’t ask what you know about a thing and roll the expected check.

Starting up the long flight of stairs it's not long before Vaascht, Rinika, and Nik hear some guttural voices.

Goblin:
”Bruh did you see how far that went? I totally landed that like 100 feet farther. It’s all about the angle muh bruh.” Another voice chimes in, ”Kask, man, stop it. You’re wasting ammo and gonna get us in trouble again!” The first voice answers, ”Bruh, don’t sweat it. If Hurfang gets her armor in a wad I’ll just challenge her, bruh.” They go back and forth for a while.

Arkynn if you wanted to rip an arm off a corpse you could use it as a club. Not a lot of wood on the plane of fire. Vaascht can use the shortspear because that's a simple weapon. The weapons aren't sized for Jek but he's probably better off with his horns in any case.

Rinika takes the offered sword, stares at it for a few seconds, then stuffs it into her belt.

"Uh...sure, yes, call me Rinika. And I think I'm dead now. Alive too, but dead. Maybe undead? It's hard to say. I think a wizard did it."

She searches around for a second before pulling up a sleeve, revealing a pallid and stretched spot of flesh about the size of her paw. The dead spot slowly roams further up her arm until it disappears under her rags. "That's the biggest outward manifestation I guess, but if you can figure out more, I'm all ears."
