Minos looks at Jellik. "There is a tail among my race. The Seven Horned Warriors. In Orc Samora. It is a tale of seven strangers coming to help a village that is being over run by bandits in great numbers. But it was messy but they still saved the village. We are seven and that is a mighty number."

When the Professor translates the questions, the girl frowns at everyone but him, then speaks urgently to Spec. “उल्लू मित्र, बारीकी से सुनो। ये गद्दार आपका इस्तेमाल कर रहे हैं। आपको उन्हें जवाब देने की ज़रूरत नहीं है! साम्राज्य के सम्मान के लिए रखें!”

Prosper is momentarily distracted by counting numbers off on his fingers. "Uh. Is math, y'know, different for Nuar?" (Maybe he's just doing some quick mafs)

"But I think I get your point Minos. It's just, um, a lot for a first mission."

When Spec translates what the cadet is saying, Prosper rubs the back of his neck sheepishly before bowing respectfully towards Spec, doing his best impression of a contrite servant.

Bluff: 1d20 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (18) + 5 + (4) = 27

'Right, just charmed to like Spec. Not the rest of us.'

"Uh, Great Master Spec, you asked me earlier to remind you that we should ask..." 'Where the invading forces weak points are? That probably wouldn't fly, right? Right!' "...You wanted to know where a bunch of new cadets, and servants for those cadets, should report to. And how many other cadets there are. Because, uh, the cadets will each get a personal servant if there's enough to go around."

Prosper smiles endearingly at the charmed cadet.

Last try

Spec tries to keep the smile on his face as he hears the team muttering in the background at Kaya’s obstinance.

Azlanti:

”Cadet Kaya, that is a fantastic answer and I commend you for your adherence to the Imperial Code. Indeed you did pass the conduct test, with flying colors I may add. However, there was one small irregularity in your answer. In accordance with Imperial Code 224 Section 21, Subsection c, Paragraph 14, any cadet is required to provide the name, rank, position, and a means to contact their two most immediate superiors to any full-time Imperial official who inquires about any protocol situation…. Which annexation clearly qualifies as. Please comply with ‘Olajra’ and above.”

Far too intimidated by Dalinar and Pon to not do precisely what Dalinar had asksed, Spec immediately complies, adding only:

”मैं वास्तव में चाहता हूं कि आप उस परीक्षा काया को पास न करें।”

Azlanti:

"Regrets: Perhaps I should have gotten a translator module after all."

During the course of this, Jellik earnestly tries to translate the dialogue to Lingston. "Um, he's asking her for a report, and her name and her number? Seriously, her number? Fast worker, she's giving it to him... and something about tests and something something something about tools. Yep, that's the jist of it."

★ --- ★ --- ★ --- ★

I'm going to give you a few more bits of information, because Prosper and Spec were very clever about how they started to change their questions, and I think they would have eventually gotten these bits.

The girl does eventually let Spec know that most of her friends are cadets, and that this is a training mission for them. There's some sort of old ship they're recovering, and that Lieutenant Sharu wants it very much... but they also came out to rescue a missing potential colony of theirs, and then realized that no one here was Azlanti. So instead of a welcoming, they had to do an annexation, something she'd only ever read about or seen in vids, and that it's been a bit rough. "लेकिन वे सभी जल्द ही साम्राज्य के खुश और उत्पादक नागरिक होंगे, एक बार इन अप्रियताओं के होने के बाद।"

Azlanti:
"But they will all soon be happy and productive citizens of the Empire once these unpleasantries are done."

★ --- ★ --- ★ --- ★

The mere act of Dalinar approaching with the sword raised is enough to break the spell. The girl looks at Spec, hurt. "मित्र उल्लू, तुमने मातृभूमि के साथ विश्वासघात क्यों किया? हमने आपके लोगों को फिर से सभ्यता दी है।" Then she looks to Dalinar. "सुंदर शब्द। लेकिन यहां कोई युद्ध अपराध नहीं थे। हम कुछ ऐसा ले रहे हैं जो हमारा है, और इन गरीब उपनिवेशवादियों को सितारों में बेहतरीन साम्राज्य की सेवा करने का मौका दे।"

Azlanti:
"Friend owl, why did you betray the motherland? We have given your people civilization again."

"Pretty words, halfbreed. But there were no war crimes here. We are taking back something that is ours, and offering these poor colonists a chance to serve the finest Empire in the stars."

Cadet Kaya meets her fate stoically -- eyes open, calm, and head unbowed.

"Doom Girl" // ♫ // ◇ ◈ ↺ // PbP Events // // PbP GM Kit // Silver Bark Golden Blades Map // ★ Shipyard Sabotage

Sombered by the executions, you begin to make your way back to the colony. “I think that I need to take you guys to meet Aibretta. She’s good with things and people, and she might have ideas on how we can proceed. Even if she really doesn’t want to see me, she’ll want to meet you. Especially when she hears you guys speak orcish and stuff. I know a way through the backwoods that will lead right to our -- um, I mean, her -- junk shop. We won’t get seen.”

Sense Motive DC 15:
He thinks Aibretta will be genuinely helpful to orienting you, but he also wants another chance to impress his ex-wife.

Jellik begins to tell you about the general layout of the colony [Map on Slide Six]. He talks about Aibretta’s shop, Madelon’s module, the water collector, the school, and other things in the town. “But where our commons was is now a great big barracks full of Azlanti.”

As you walk back closer to town, Wint shuts you up, and you all go pretty quiet. Eventually you reach a low spot that is simply carpeted with fog.

The fog obscures all sight, including darkvision, beyond 5 feet. A creature within 5 feet has concealment (attacks have a 20% miss chance) against its attacker. Creatures farther away have total concealment (50% miss chance, and the attacker can't use sight to locate the target) against their attackers. They won't be able to do ranged on you, and you won't be able to do ranged on them.

That’s when Minos looks down and realizes that his proximity badge is flashing. Minos realizes from the coding that there are four Azlanti guards approaching. And since it is so foggy, and they’re pretty confident, they’re keeping up a loud conversation with each other so that they don’t lose each other in the fog. The very fact that they are keeping in touch verbally means that they likely don’t have one of these badges themselves.

Place yourselves wherever you want on the map on Slide One. You will all get a surprise round before this starts, as a result of your successful stealth rolls earlier in this adventure.

Proximity alert triggered, you prepare for an ambush in the fog. Minos, Rush and Prosper hide in the stream. Slowed down by his gimping leg, Jellik hides by a tree, realizing that he’s in no shape to go chasing Azlanti soldiers in the fog.

Wint proves that he’s just as good a hunter as he is a spy. With two well-timed hits with his tactical Baton, he downs the yellow Azlant soldier before it can even cry out.

Dalinar gives a huge battle cry to Red and Pink, causing them to turn around, but misses in the fog.

Pon and the Professor both take their chances using ranged weapons in the fog. Special Agent Pon’s weapon hits, while Prof Spec’s shot goes awry in the mists.

★ --- ★ --- ★ --- ★

It’s the turn of Team Azlanti. “मैं हमले के अधीन हूँ!” Green shouts, stepping over the body of his fallen comrade to slash at Wint. Expecting someone much taller, he misses.

Red hits Dalinar, but doesn't aim his attack for the vitals, and so does little damage.

Meanwhile, in the confusion, Pink leaps over the edge and jumps to the water. "आप उसे रोक देते हैं - हम में से एक को बेस को चेतावनी देने की आवश्यकता है!" He falls in with a huge splash, then submerges himself to hide from attackers.

Azlanti:
"We're under attack!"

"Us too!"

"You hold them off -- one of us needs to report back!"

Dalinar:

Pon listens to Dalinar's little rant with a serene patience that resembles that of a kasathan priest. He takes a few moments before responding and then says softly, "Dalinar, I understand your anger and distrust, and they are not unfounded. It seems to me that from your perception of this and your reasoning for killing that soldier in that way, that you have a very self-centered lens through which you view the universe around you. Your reason for doing things is limited by your own perception of how the universe and, in these cases, people operate and are motivated."

Pon continues, "That soldier for example. You commented that you had to do what you did because 'your conscience wouldn't rest otherwise'. Simply put, how that soldier died affected your conscience? Why? To add to that, you felt it necessary to impress upon her your perceptions of the situation. You seemed to feel that she needed to know why you thought she should die. As, if she understood why you thought she should die she would somehow agree and be repentant? You, by your actions, in fact exemplify why that is simply not true. Just as you understand your views to be correct and 'how the universe works', so do the Azlanti believe themselves to be correct. The only thing you are doing by your ritualistic execution is attempt to make yourself and possibly someone else feel better."

"Which leads me to my next point, why I chuckled at your display. I found no humor in that soldier's death. It was merely an inevitability. I couldn't help but chuckle at your display. It seemed overly dramatic and pointless to me. My motivations for doing the things that I have done are because my life and profession cause me to have little to no trust in others. Knowledge is power and if I know others' capabilities, I always have the advantage. I generally have altruistic intentions, and don't trust others. So, I know that I won't maliciously hurt others, but I don't trust that in others."

"As for whether you trust me or not, that is your decision. I care little, so long as you do not get in the way of our saving Nakondis and Cedona."

Dalinar chuckles, "Now that, that is humorous. You thought I would not want to hear your reasons because I am a proud man and you were worried about hurting my feelings. Listen, I do not care what you or anyone else thinks. I carry myself this way for myself and no one else."

Dalinar quickly replaces mirth with intensity as he continues, "Of course I have a self-centered view point. Almost all of the peoples in the Pact Worlds do. You included, just listen to what you just said. You think your perspective is better than mine.

"Yes, the way the soldier died did effect my conscious. I do not begrudge anyone else for how they felt about it but watching someone else die because of a decision I took part in would not sit well with me. To reiterate, with me. Condemning someone to die and then watching it take place instead of swinging the sword yourselves may be fine for the rest of you, but not for me.

"I will not deny that part of what I did was for my own reassurance. I am not a liar and I am not ashamed of it. I actually find it regrettable to take a captive and not give them the chance to see the error of their ways. And yes, the Azlant Empire does believe they are right but I don't believe some things come down to perspective. Many things do when it comes to morals but taking slaves and killing people for one's own benefit are not among them, I can not, will not, be convinced otherwise. And so their ways are in error.

"I fully expected someone as rigid as that soldier, and trust me I know rigid when I see it, to meet her fate with defiance. But no, mostly I explained to her why she had to die because I find it cruel to convince someone they are among friends and then to kill them while they wonder what is going on."

Dalinar stops for a moment to take a breath. He finishes his speech sounding tired, "I know that I just said that I try not to hold other's view points against them but I don't know how I feel about finding humor in anything during an execution. I will try to understand it and ask that you try to understand me."

Flashback

As Wint listens to Dalinar and Pon argue
"I don't like it when my friends argue with each other. What can I do to make them friendly with each other? I knows that my people view death differently than many others I've met. Death is really not all that big a deal. People die. Obviously, we try hard to make sure that WE don't die and our friends don't. But we often fail. We all die. Why make such a freaking big deal about it? I guess its not funny but why get upset because somebody has a different sense of humour?"

I really can't see Wint actually voicing his opinions but I wanted people to know what he is thinking :-).

"Uh, guys, is now really the time for this discussion? Lets put it aside and, when time allows, talk about it over LOTS of brandy. Brandy helps all philosophical arguments in my experience. Or other drugs if you don't like brandy. Tea, maybe?"
