Freen & Wint:
"Oh I can accept pity. Goodnight Freen." Dalinar closes his door.

Dalinar wakes the next morning to find Wint in his room polishing his sword. The skittermander is the first in the group to see the sword drawn and may notice that while the scabbard and hardware looks absolutely ancient the blade seems newly forged.

"What in The Devourer's !#$&*:@$ do you think you're doing?!" Dalinar shouts as he jumps out of bed. He snatches Stag Render from Wint as carefully as he can in his haste. Then he stands panting for a moment in his underwear. Calming himself he speaks softly, "I am sorry, that was an overreaction but you cannot just come into someone's room and start fiddling with their sword."

SUMMARY OF SHIP COMBAT -- ROUND FOUR

It's a better round for The Teapot.

ENGINEERING PHASE

Tools back in hand, Freen successfully diverts power to the shields.

HELM

The only aid anothers come from the Captain’s chair.

As the yellow drone zips around, Minos has trouble tracking it this round. Wint executes a flyby maneuver to allow all guns a chance at the troublesome yellow drone! Once again the aggressive yellow drone draws right up next to The Teapot!

GUNS

Spec and Rush both miss the yellow drone as it goes by!

Dalinar digs in deep, and gives Prosper an inspiring speech about making to those videogame skills happen! With that encouragement, Prosper hits and shoots for twelve damage, which turns into eighteen as crit thresholds are reached!

Then the maniacal yellow drone fires at The Teapot!

Heh. Heh. Heh.

Automated (Ex) An Azlanti orbital drone has no crew, though it has an on-board computer that can perform most crew actions. The on-board computer can perform pilot and gunnery actions as if it has a crew of two. When an Azlanti drone takes a critical damage effect, it instead loses 2 Hull Points.

The autodestruct system triggers when an orbital drone reaches 0 Hull Points. Starships in hexes adjacent to a starship as it autodestructs take damage equal to half the destroyed starship's maximum Hull Points, mitigated by shields.

Minos scans around for any other signs. "Pity I would have like to have taken one on board. Though we shall keep an eye out for more trouble as we approach the planet."

Minos begins to scan for possible places to land near the settlement and also does a scan in the near (100 mile?) vicinity of the settlement for anything interesting. Lastly just a general scan of what he can see of the rest of the planet as the approaches.

Discussions with Spec:

At some point Minos and Spec will have begun chatting. The specific details don't really matter when you have two different very talkative intellectuals and for the most part once it started it never really ended.

So here are some snippits..

"Though to the matter of awareness makes reality. Consider the dwarfs found at Salvation's End, which our friend Charli discovered. We know that it "was not real" since outside we say the simulations. But for generations, those dwarfs lived their lives. Does that make their reality any less? The Drift itself is a gift from Triune but is only recently found after the Gap. Where was it before? Gods can create realities, so does that make us gods to the dwarfs of Salvation's End?"

....

"I would agree about the squox. But how does the orange blossom fit in"

As Minos does his scans, he notices something interesting.

BZZZZZZZZZT!

Much of the colonized part of Nakondis is blanketed with a 200-mile-wide burst of modulated static that interferes with any communications. Even though it's pretty standard to radio ahead to a colony when you're intending on landing, it would definitely not be possible right now.

DC 19 Computers or Engineering:
That's not a natural effect. It's too steady to be a result of the planet's natural electrical fields, and it seems to be emanating from Madelon's Landing.

Nakondis is a forest planet draped in perpetual fog; you can't visually see the settlement of Madelon's Landing as you fly above the landscape. By using The Teapot's sensors, you can detect the general layout of the settlement and determine that it contains just over 100 humanoid life forms, most of which are human.

DC 12 Computers:
You identify a large, incongruous structure in the middle of the settlement. The structure is a prefabricated building with sweeping curves that resembles a fortress more than a colony dwelling. Two starship-scale heavy laser cannons (+10 gunnery, 4d8 damage each) are mounted on the building's roof. These weapons are positioned to defend against approaching starships and can't fire at targets on the ground.

DC 17 Culture

Spoiler:
The building's design has much in common with rumors of similar structures built by the Azlanti Star Empire.

Freen:

The professor stares at Freen for just a half moment too long of unnatural avian stillness before breaking out into his giant beaky grin. "Attaboy Freen!" He barks out a laugh, pats the man on the shoulder, and trys to feed him a very strange cookie. "I must say, very few of the young people I've ever dealt with have that kind of composure and persistence when I press them about their wording. Ooh, now this one is worth a closer look..

The comms open up and Freen's voice crackles through, "Hey all, I diverted some unnecessary power from other sources on the ship to enhance the Teapot's sensors and...uhh...we can't contact Madelon's Landing, our destination. The static that is interfering is not naturally occurring, according to the logs passed on from the settlement and the readings from the planet. It is...the Azlanti have started it...

Freen hesitantly accepts and starts eating the 'food' that Spec gives to him. He chews on it for a few seconds and then hesitantly swallows. "Umm..well...no. I can't do any magic," Freen says as he holds up his hands slowly, "These just fix problems, with ships and stuff..." He trails off and stays silent for a couple minutes. "My life isn't very interesting Professor. I grew up on Akiton, I learned how to be useful, and got lucky when someone noticed how good I was. I left Akiton, went a few places, and wound up practicing my trade around the Pact." He then looks down, a bit abashed, "I'm lucky for the opportunities I've had, really, and have managed to learn many things along the way that my Captains thought I should know. They were all very rigid, but still quite nice."

"So, something is SUPER wrong with Madelon's Landing is what you're saying?" He looks between Freen and Spec. "They don't want anyone contacting the people on the planet, or maybe they don't want the planetside folks calling out. And there's a big gun pointed out at space?"

He shakes his head, flowing auburn getting all mussed in the process (though mysteriously it falls back into a perfect wave moments later). "Minos, how close can we get without getting shot? It is my conceptualization that the positions for starship combat are not Star Trek -esk and each position is a location on the ship (except pilot and captain). I prefer this conceptualization because, to me it makes starship combat much more interesting and dynamic. Therefore, under that assumption...

Freen stands alone in the engine room staring at the second bit of evidence to suggest that the Azlanti Star Empire was here on Nakondis.

There is no more time...

Freen reaches up to the collar of his jumpsuit and gives it a flick. A wave of semi-digital hexes flipping quickly travels from the collar of the jumpsuit down to Freen's boots. The dull, dirty, red-orange jumpsuit is slowly replaced by a crisp deep blue military uniform with yellow/gold accents. On the left shoulder is a symbol of a blue shield with blue wings, each of which are outlined in yellow and there are three yellow stars in a triangular formation at the top of the shield. On the shoulders, the lapels have a yellow X stitched in on either side. As his clothing is changing so is Freen, albeit much more slowly. His hair changes from the black it was to a sandy brown. His somewhat smoothed facial features become sharper and his deep red skin changes to a peachy tone.

While both of these changes are occurring, Freen is quickly and efficiently typing into the computers system, his posture and demeanor are nothing like the nervous, squeamish Freen once was. Now he stands (a little bit taller as well) with well executed posture and confidence. He takes a break from the 'computering', adjusts his stance as if to address someone and begins talking at the screen.

"This is Special Agent Pon, confirmation code omega-zero-two-five-four-five-eight-two. I have just arrived at the new colony world of Nakondis, but not landed. There is strong evidence to suggest that the Azlanti have invaded. I will be investigating. I repeat there is strong evidence to suggest the Azlanti have invaded. I will be investigating. Over."

With that message sent, Pon gathers his things and heads to his room.

******************************

Right after Dalinar finishes his rallying speech, a tannish, sandy brown haired human enters the bridge area somewhat slowly with his hands up in a surrender position and a familiar bag slung across his back. He wears the blue uniform.

He speaks with confidence and authority, "I wanted to do this in another way and at another time but the situation warrants that this happen now. As some of you may already have guessed I am who you knew as Freen. I am actually Special Agent Pon of the Stewards Ops. Surprisingly, I was going on vacation to visit Cedona but this situation has changed those plans. Likely all of our plans. The drones we fought in orbit resembled, and then were confirmed by the fortress building we saw as Azlanti Star Empire in design. The Azlani Star Empire is in the top three threats that the Stewards have estimated threaten the Pact Worlds. Sadly, I do not know much more about them other than they are highly militaristic and highly expansionist. I suggest that we do investigate, but with care. As confident as I am in each of your abilities, we do not know the size of their presence. And fighting a whole military force is a bit beyond our capabilities."

I obviously vote for stealthing.

The scenario describes a middle ground between "I am a ghost on the wind ninja" and "I am only slightly quieter than a rampaging rhino." You can attempt to move normally, letting your stealthiest person, Wint, pick the path. During that time, you try to keep conversation to a minimum and try to avoid stepping on loud things or crashing through the underbrush.

If would you like to try just being quieter than normal:

Dalinar Stealth: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Freen / Pon Stealth: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23

LINGSTON takes note of the change in Freen to Pon. Observation: I see. So you were unaware that this would be the circumstances but are familiar with them. Strategical Query: Perhaps you have an idea or understanding of what we should be expecting?”

Rush seems to lurk a bit. Statement: I am giving Rush a dosage of adrenaline as soon as anyone spots us, inciting a Flight or Fight response; I hope you can decide which fights we need to make. We two will proceed quietly.”

Minos then smiles. "Other ideas are more outlandish, but what is here satisfies all the facts we have at hand. Though I am in agreement with Dalinar, more details later"

As a member of a race of natural shapeshifters, Prosper totally takes Freen/Pon's reveal in stride. He waves at Pon as the fellow returns to the bridge "Hey looking good there! That form fits you like a glove! " He casts a practiced, appraising glance over the Steward agent, evaluating the new appearance.

'Probably Sig-Eps-223 out of Eta-Eta-999. But I might give it a try.'

"So do you want us to call you Freen or Pon? Or a mix of both?" He pops a piece of candy into his mouth "I have a friend from back in the Skyfire Trainee dorms that has a different name on every day of the week. Cool girl. And helpful too! If I ever forgot what day it was I'd just give her a holler."

When Pon explains there are Azlanti down on the planet, Prosper's brow furrows. "Azlanti, huh? That sounds dangerous. But like you said Mr. Dalinar, that means maybe Cedona is in trouble. So I'm with you. Let's go down there and find her!"

Prosper activates his armor's environmental seals (just as his Skyfire Legion training suggested) when the group sets down on the planet. He'll join the rest of the group in trying to be relatively quiet as they head towards the settlement in the distance.

He watches the preparations and varying approaching of his allies with open curiosity. He whispers "It's amazing how many different people we have here. In the Legion, it's all about using complementary tactics and fighting styles, so everyone's prep is basically the same."

Before heading out Dalinar goes to change clothes. He steps out of the ship in his brilliant white breastplate. The armor seems to have no weight and doesn't make any extra noise. Unfortunately that makes little difference since Dalinar blunders through the jungle exactly the way one would expect from a 6'8" half-orc who spent most of his life in a palace.

Wint comes up to Dalinar
"I hate to be rude, but perhaps you'd be willing to darken that breastplate just a little? Its very pretty but its just a bit too bright. If I may?"

Without waiting for an answer, he proceeds to smear it with a little bit of mud and some leaves. Its quite amazing what 6 arms can do :-)

"There, thats better. Don't worry, I'll make it shine even more when the time is right"

He also goes over to Lingston
"While I appreciate the music, I'm thinking that right now isn't the time. We all need to keep ALL of our attention on moving quietly AND looking out for danger"

Wint then goes ahead of the rest of the group, slipping quietly ahead, often getting lost in the shadows. All while holding no less than 3 weapons ready while still having arms free to quietly brush tree limbs aside.

He is still the same harmless and somewhat comical little fellow he has always been. But sudddenly he actually seems competent. And, somehow, perhaps a little dangerous.

Dalinar's brilliant white breastplate is extra-shiny, and whenever you get a patch of sun through the misty fog it sparkles. At least it does until Wint muddies it. After the initial burst of 'We ate Golarian' music from Lingston, your journey starts out very well indeed. The group is able to follow where the ulta-quiet skittermander leads, and you barely make any sound as you proceed along.

The good Professor flies overhead, sometimes darting over trees, sometimes skimming along the river. The only real bit of noise happens when Dalinar's sword hilt got tangled in some underbrush, and he had to crash around a bit to get it loose.
