During the mad dash to get to the screaming damsel, Spec inadvertently found himself far closer to a drone than he had any real desire to be.
WOAH! This is a little too close for comfort ...
"back, back, back, back.."
He mates his actions to his words and carefully steps back, brings up his rifle, and fires at Blue.
Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
Cold Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6 non-lethal
Crit Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1
"Aha! Take that you viridian villain!"
GM Hmm |
Prosper thinks about getting sticky with drones, and hits one squarely with his flare gun! Dalinar barely manages to jump out of the way of the goo, but this throws off the swing of his sword! Pon eschews his normal tactical banter and just shoots, but the glare from the sun -- something that the mist has obscured all this time -- throws off his shot.
Spec hits the drone PERFECTLY and has no effect!

"Observation: These drones do not suffer from attacks meant to bring a target to unconscious status. I would recommend changing your laser from stun to kill, Professor."
After that, Rush lurches closer towards the drone.
Minos the Techno-Philosopher |

Bzzzzt!
Meanwhile, Spec aims a gun for the very first time -- and just barely misses.
Then Rush lurches at the drone, almost cutting it to bits... But it's still flying even though its wiring is sparking, and there's a huge slash in its hull.

BZZZZZZT!
The drone sparks and falls apart in a shower of pieces!
The entangled lashunta woman starts to cut herself free of the goo. "Thanks for the rescue. I'm Goraya Li. You must be the Mysterious Seven that Aibretta mentioned to me this morning. I mean I'm sure I would have remembered folks like you in Nakondis colony!" Then she frowns. "I haven't seen them use the drones in town before. I wonder what set them off?"
Wint |

"Mysterious Seven, eh? I LIKE that name. Hey guys, we now have an official group name!!!! We Are The MYSTERIOUS SEVEN"
He tries to say the last in a deep, spooky voice. Being a Skittermander and not having put in some fancy vocal upgrade into his comms unit, he fails. It comes out more in a high pitched screech.
GM Hmm |

Goraya laughs. "So, given the six arms, you must be Wint." Then she glances at Minos and Rush. "Not many Nuars or Wrikichees here, so you must be Minos and Lingston, right?" Then she bits her lip. "Now it gets harder. I was told that there was a Dalinar that was super cute. Is that you?" she looks at Prosper. "You are really cute, but I didn't think you were Aibretta's type."
GM Hmm |

"Oh!" Goraya blushes. "So Rush is the Wrikichee, and you're... an AI? Aibretta must have loved you, Lingston."
"And you must be the Professor." She glances at Spec. "Um... If this isn't impertinent, what are you? I don't think I've met an alien like you. Are you from the Pact Worlds?"
Prof. Spec Silvervanes |

Spec looks up from where he was intently picking at the pairof rifles... Trying to figure out why they weren't working..
"Oh, yes, mrhmmph.. I am sometimes known as the professor, this is true."
He attempts to smile encouragingly at her (which may or may not work on an owl's face)
"And there is no impertinence to the pursuit of knowledge my dear. Quite simply, I AM from the P... well, technically no, I.. not born there... lived there most of...(looking for general information, not.. this) Ahem!"
He clears his throat rather harshly and looks slightly abashed. "Sorry, I guess there's nothing simple about it after all. My people are the xaursi, and once upon a time we had a small interstellar nation in what you call the Vast. Something bad happened, and the Empire was more than happy to ensure we never recovered.
The professor's gaze darkens "I assure you I love them not for their actions..." He visibly forces away the memories. "But enough of that gloom dearie, what is it that we can do for you?"
Aldrox |
Engineering? for scavenging: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Pon stays away from the conversation and scavenges through the remnants of the drones for anything of use. He then pulls out his comm unit and sends Professor a message.
Your cold rifle is built in such a way so as to deal damage that will cause trauma to living organisms but not lethal trauma. Against a non-living thing it does nothing.
GM Hmm |
Goraya's brows raise sky-high. "Oh, you're Dalinar! Interesting." She looks Dalinar over, once. Then twice. "Okay, I can see that." Then she returns to Spec's question.
"Um, okay. So I'm Goraya, and I work as a project manager here in Madelon's Landing. I have several siblings and nieces working in the Blue Tin Range. Unless the Azlanti are stopped here, it’s only a matter of time before they put their boots on the necks of those miners as well." She bites her lip. "Right before the ship landed, we heard there was some kind of accident out there. Madelon had gotten a report, and was going to brief me on it, but he got taken away right afterwards and went into that barracks. I... er... don't know whether my family is alive or dead."
She takes a deep breath. "Um, you're heading down the road, to the water collector, right? The Azlantis did something to it, and it now dispenses water only to them. But something happened yesterday when I passed by and... oh, you'll think this is stupid." She looks away, slightly embarrassed.
Prof. Spec Silvervanes |
Continuing the conversation, Spec hops over to pat her on the shoulder
"There, there now. No need to fret my dear, just tell us what you've observed and we can determine it's validity together! What do you say?"
Minos the Techno-Philosopher |
Minos listens off to the side but as with Pon he too takes a look of what can be salvaged from the bots. That gunk spewer looked useful. But it might take to long to use for now.
Engineering: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
Then something catches his attention. "I wonder how they do the lockout. Maybe a code, that should be hackable." he pats himself down to see if he picked up any ID chip or something from the previous cadets. "Well we will need to improvise"
Prosperity "Prosper" Starr |
Prosper wanders over to Goraya after reloading and holstering his rifle. "Hey there! Yeah, we're heading to the water collector. Gotta make sure everyone doesn't die of dehydration, right?" He gives the project manager a thumbs up.
"So what happened to you at the water collector? Wait- don't tell me you fell for one of the azlanti guards there! I know they're pretty attractive, but every single one we've seen so far has had a rotten personality." He nods as if he's dispensing sage advice.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
"And the people at that mine..." Prosper runs a hand awkwardly through his hair, glancing at his allies "Uh, can we go over and check on them? An accident doesn't sound good. At least the azlanti aren't over there, right?"
Wint |
"Hello Goraya. Yes, I'm Wint. Don't worry, we're here to help!
Obviously, we'll check on your family! But I think that we need to clean out this town first. Pretty soon I think the Azlanti are going to realize they're under attack.
So guys, lets go kill some more Azlanti shall we?"
GM Hmm |
Her antennae sag as she frowns at Prosper. "You're cute... but not very perceptive, are you? No, I did not fall for one of the Azlanti! Sheesh!" You all get a wave of psychic disgust from her. "I want them OUT of this colony. No more police state. No more senseless murders. No more being under their thumb, not knowing whether our family members miles away are alive!"
She calms down at the Professor's kindly tone. "No... what happened near the water collector was different." She takes a deep breath, then looks to all of you. "So, you should know that I'm an amateur singer. I kind of sing everywhere when I work." She shrugs, as if trying to minimize her talents. "It passes the time, you know? So I was passing by the water collector, and I sang a song that I learned back when I was an exchange student on Kalo-Mahoi."
She clears her throat and starts to sing:
♫ ලෝකය තවමත් පවතින ස්ථානයක් මම දන්නවා
කාලය සහ අභ්යවකාශය කිසිදු ඉඩක් නැත

where time and space have no hold
I know a place where my heart and soul are one
and there are stories left untold
Oh brave waters, together flow free
Oh wild waters, now you sing to me
Cradle me and float me up high
Safe in your eddies, we'll sail on by
Winding and wandering waters
Come raise your daughters
Together we'll float to the sea ♫
Goraya's voice is a surprisingly pleasant soprano -- she had obvious voice training at some point in her life -- and even if you don't understand the words, the melody resonates in this quiet place near the woods. "Anyway... I was singing that, when all of a sudden I swear that the water in the collector was splashing along to my tune."
Then when Wint speaks, she gets embarrassed again. "Anyway, you're right. It's probably nothing. I should let you get back to more important things. I can gather several of us from the resistance tonight at Aibretta's. We'll serve you dinner, and then we'll talk, okay?"
Prosperity "Prosper" Starr |
Did her singing have a melody anything like this? :>
Prosper breathes a sigh of relief when she confirms that there's no star-crossed lovers stuff going on here "Oh good, I was worried!"
Mid way through her singing, Prosper begins to hum along with a voice that suspiciously sounds like hers. At the end he exclaims "Wow! So beautiful! I love it! And it sounds like the water in that collector loved it too, huh? Uh, maybe that's some kind of magic song?" Prosper thinks about a show he once saw with a powerful mystic splitting the sea with his singing.
"If you're up for it, maybe you could help us with the water collector. If Minos can't do his weird computers stuff with it and fix whatever the Azlanti did, maybe you could sing the water out?"
Aldrox |
Pon, with Minos, gathers the salvageable parts of the drones and then begins digging around in the bushes to hide the unusable remnants of the drones.
Minos the Techno-Philosopher |
Goraya's narration piques Minos's interest. "The water moved to song? Well that is curious. There might be more than just a simple lock at hand"
Minos the puts his hand on Prosper's shoulder to slightly nudge him back on task. "Though we don't want to be putting any of the locals in undue harms way yet. Let Aibretta handle the arranging the best tasks for her people. We have our tasks, and we don't want to add you list of Things Prosper needs to apologize for."
Dalinar Theodrin |
Dalinar's toes tap along to Goraya's tune. He notices after a few seconds and forces himself to stand still.
"Yes, that seems like a fine plan. We will meet with the resistance tonight. For now we should keep moving."
GM Hmm |
Goraya looks nervously between you. "I don't want to be in the way. If you don't think it's a good idea for me to come, I'll go off and do my own thing. But if you want me, I can hang back a ways and you can call me?"
I'll let you decide whether she's coming. If she's coming, feel free to place her near the back on SLIDE ONE.
The moisture collector in Madelon's Landing stands on the northeastern edge of the settlement. The device is a metal spire adorned with several wide flanges, similar in shape to satellite dishes, and four large plastic tubs for water collection sit at its base. Thick plastic tubes connect the flanges and the tubs. The water inside is burbling gently.

Dalinar draws Stag Render. "Something is not right here. Why are there no guards? While the mechanically minded folks check what the Azlantis have done to this machine the rest of us should be on guard."

At the Ambush site
Spec continues to pat her on the shoulder encouragingly. "Miss Goraya, unless you are strongly opposed to accompanying us to the collector, I would much appreciate the assistance of your musical talents in unraveling this moisture conundrum. Water is not generally known for any psychic resonance when confronted with song, so that tells me that something may be afoot"
------------------
At the Collector
Spec semi-deferentially calls out"Um, Pon? Maybe before we trigger any sort of unpleasantness from disturbing the water and whatever sort of countermeasures there are, we can oserve the phenomenon Miss Goraya noted earlier regarding her song? It didn't trigger anything before after all."
Assuming she is hanging back off the edge of the map, waiting to be called
Wint |

"Uh, I'm a simple sort. I recorded Goraya's pretty song earlier. It was SO pretty I wanted to share it with others. Maybe we should play it and see what happens?"
GM Hmm |
"Um, I'm happy to hang back while Wint plays the song." Goraya says, watching curiously. While the Skittermander plays the song, Goraya's clear and beautiful recorded voice rings out in the area. The water in the water collector fountains and then does indeed slosh in tune to the melody.
SLOSH!
SLOSH!
SLOSH!
The water rises and falls in the tubs in tune to the music. When Pon approaches, he experimentally tries one of the faucets and easily fills a small drinking barrel... In fact the water is practically pouring itself. As Pon moves the barrel, the water aims itself at odd angles to fill it.
Goraya's jaw drops, and she telepathically asks all of you, How did he do that? The water never releases for us.
Prosperity "Prosper" Starr |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
"That- Is- Officially- Amazing." Prosper grins when the water starts moving about in time with Goraya's song. "It's like the water's dancing!"
He looks over at Goraya and adds "Um, I've got a totally out there idea, if you want to hear it." He raises his hands to get the party's attention. "Alright, I think I've seen this exact thing on an episode of Inspector Widget. Get this. The azlanti... filled the water with nanomachines! Nanomachines that really like listening to music. And can't help but dance when they hear it. Oh and they told the nanomachines not to give any of the Madelon's Landing colonists any water to drink!" He beams at the group, totally sure that he's cracked the case.
Prof. Spec Silvervanes |

Spec peers at the moving water and attempts to remember anything mystical that could cause that effect.
Mysticism: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
"In typically Azlanti fashion, there is probably something in there against it's will that has been instructed to limit water distribution, just like Prosper said"
He nods in Prosper's direction.
"I don't know if they're nanomachines or something else, but it sure seems like they appreciate that song, and maybe the language?"
GM Hmm |
Spec realizes that the odd behavior that he is seeing would be totally in line with that of an elemental creature that has been bound to a purpose.
Perception, Dalinar: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Perception, Minos: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Perception, Pon: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Perception, Prosper: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Perception, Rush Ling: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (17) + 0 = 17
Perception, Spec: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Perception, Wint: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Once he points this out, everyone but Minos and Dalinar can spot the creature making faces at Pon before it splashes back into its basin. It jumps up, mimics the pony tail and the serious expression, then falls back in.
Rush Ling |
Rush does something rather unexpected. He gets down on one knee and kneels before the elemental upon seeing it, blade retracting.
GM Hmm |
The elemental rises out of the water and splashes Rush playfully before returning to his basin.
Goraya happily translates, singing in common.
♫ I know a place where the world is still
where time and space have no hold
I know a place where my heart and soul are one
and there are stories left untold
Oh brave waters, together flow free
Oh wild waters, now you sing to me
Cradle me and float me up high
Safe in your eddies, we'll sail on by
Winding and wandering waters
Come raise your daughters
Together we'll float to the sea ♫
As she sings, the elemental sloshes a little, but not with the enthusiasm of earlier. "It was a song that families sang together in Kalo-Mahoi." Then her brow furrows. "Are you sure it's the song that makes it work, though?"
GM Hmm |
"I didn't know it existed before now!" Goraya walks forward, swallowing to gather courage. "හෙලෝ, ගෞරවණීය කෙනෙක්. මම ඔබේ වතුර බෙදාගන්නද?"
"Hello, honored one. May I share of your water?"
She holds out a water barrel, and before she can even tentatively reach for the faucet, it fills. "It worked!" she says with a delighted smile.
The water elemental leaps out of its basin, and then returns back in with a splash.
LINGSTON |
"Observation: Greetings, Elemental being. My companion, Rush, seems to hold you in a high level of regard.
Assumption: I would believe that to him, the plane of water has some significance. Would you happen to know of the Wrikreechee at all?"
He waits for a moment.
"Apologetic: Ah yes, you may not understand my language. Please forgive me if that is the case."
