"So I take it then that none of you know who I am or where my home is then?" Cal asked, clearly hoping that he was wrong.

When he the answer came back as a negative, he said "Very well then." He then turned towards the priest and said "what was that proper noun you just used? Numaria?"

The Aeon Priest chuckles slightly as he answers,

"Numenera is the term used for all the remnants of the former civilizations of the Ninth World: bits of nanotechnology, the datasphere threaded among still-orbiting satellites, bio-engineered creatures, and myriad strange and wondrous devices."

"There are several types of Numenera: Oddities: Curiosities with no useful purpose; Cyphers: Useful bits of technology; Artifacts: Complete, working tools and weapons; Discoveries: Ancient structures and buildings."

"Numenera devices comes in different display: Scavenged: A device in the same state it was when taken out of a ruin of the prior worlds; Cobbled: A device made from several pieces of Numenera to create a new effect; Bonded: A device of recent crafting including a Numenera; Fashioned: A device inspired by a Numenera, but who is not one itself."

The Unfettered Prince turns as he poses his question to observe the Aeon Priest biting his lip lower lip slightly in a sign of focused consideration,

"Well, he did leave some notes that we've chosen to house in the local Amber Priory, as opposed to the archives of the Conjugatorium. They seem to hint that he was himself part of an early order of archaeologists that only slightly predated, and in fact overlapped in their existence with, the foundation of the Order of Truth. In other words, he was probably an early Aeon Priest or quasi Aeon Priest before that term was entirely settled. It seems he may have brought his own numenera to Halfstar from afar off. It is said he was a native of a mysterious clave in the unsettled territory beyond the mountains to the east known as the Beyond. Some of the stories say he may have been a native of a distant territory known as the Lands of the Dawn."

Ismin chuckles,

"Number? Millions? Billions? Trillions? Uncountable? Ha!"

"Nanites are small machines. The datasphere is an information network that surrounds this planet."

"Cal" wrote:

Ismin expands upon this explanation,

"The datasphere is an information network left over from the prior worlds."

"Most people in the Ninth World cannot access it at will, but some receive very rare visions transmitted directly into their brains, seemingly at random. These are called glimmers, and their appearance is called a glimmer burst."

"Many glimmers are meaningless to the receiver, but occasionally valuable information can be gleaned from them. Sometimes, however, they need to be decoded first."

"Up until now, people have only caught glimmers of the datasphere."

"But recently access points, called vertices, have been discovered."

"Those who find these access points can use them to explore a metaphysical space and plumb the depths of its mysteries. Further, they can use them to learn of new discoveries in the real world. Whole new lands to explore. And even to uncover the mysteries of the prior worlds, and the grand actions that took place aeons ago, affecting the Earth, the Sun, and the other planets. Actions that have an impact—perhaps a massive impact—on our world today."

"Finding and reaching a vertice is usually a challenge, but if explorers can do so, they’ll find a wealth of information. That is, assuming they can survive a foray into the datasphere itself—because at a vertice, one physically enters the network, translating their human body into raw information."

"Moving through the conduits, nodes, and vertices of the datasphere, humans explore and discover a world separate from the physical world, but no less real. Navigating through the intricate webs of the datasphere, they will face obstacles unlike anything they’ve ever encountered, and worse, they’ll discover that there are ancient things dwelling within it that will likely see them as intruders or just data to absorb."

"If an intrepid explorer is successful, however, all manner of information can be gained about the past and the present—new lands to discover, new ancient wonders to unearth. The datasphere also contains a new type of useful treasures to Ninth Worlders in the form of digitized cyphers and artifacts."

The Aeon priest concludes,

"It is said, they might even find a way to use it as a travel matrix to move instantly from vertice to vertice in the physical world."

"I would see and read these notes of Thane's. To accomplish that, I would learn your tongue and any others that are required. I believe you said such was possible in this place?"

When nanomachines are mentioned, the Prince recognises the term.

"Ah. I recall that I can order 'nanites' from my own body to flow onto a weapon and coat it temporarily, for deadly effect. I imagine those are but one variety of nanomachine, if they are even the same branch of technology. This datasphere, with its vertices and digital lore, sounds quite useful. HERE is a pdf of the current location.

Male advanced half-celestial agile post-human unchained zen archer monk (master of many styles) 8//psychic (amnesiac) 8 (gestalt; wizard* VMC) // Champion 3 :: Trickster 3 Algn: Blue (Red/Green)

Pacing thoughtfully across the floor, he pauses, then adjusts his placement so that he is before, but not upon, a certain other-colored portion of it. And then he begins to speak, or sing, or dance -- well, really, it's all three -- in what is at first a sonorous song-chant, projecting as he does, with a thumping rhythm that exists in both voices, mind and throat.

Te-ho-ru-ma-tha-l-lu-a-mas-sa-mas-sa calls their prey;
Te-ho-ru-ma-tha-l-lu-a-mas-sa-mas-sa, go or stay.
Not for seek-ing, not for learn-ing, not for glo-ry or for fame;
Strive a-part and strive to-geth-er, they for-get they are the same.

This seems a call for attention, a chiding, a reminder of past times, and perhaps a bit of instruction for the rest of those around him; it is both song and speaking, perhaps created on the spot as he sings, staff lifted to balance his body as he dances as well. Launching from her perch on his shoulder, Sy'ad harmonizes along with him, her aerial dance weaving in and out of his semi-martial movements. He continues to projects as he sings, his mind-voice and his speech somehow managing to match each other in rhythm and song, though it is entirely possible one is more ... informative ... than the other.

"Bright light and shadow, you watchers and players, how can you not see the other, your mirror?
Closing your minds to your siblings and children who choose a path not the one that is yours?
To watch without caring your judgements made wisely are foolishness waiting to fall on your head;
To seize others' free will and drive to destruction is cruel and evil thrice paid for instead.

"Your follies have led you to mayhem and madness, alone in the darkness with naught but yourselves,
Keeping at arm's-length those you could have aided, to leaven their suff'ring and made bloom their fields,
Or taking and raiding their very existence, to toy with, a plaything, and break in the end!
To not help is harming if you could do something; to force on them suff'ring, infinitely worse.
"

As he has sung this scolding, his dance has taken him up to between the two statues -- the gateways through which the 'fireflies' and the 'shadows' enter those who touch them.

"So cease now and listen, cease now and slumber: your Spinner of Songs is whom I address.
Stopper your ears, you, and cover your eyes up, quiet your chatter and silence your minds.
"

The rest of the 'verse' is but wordless song, a seeming lullaby of sorts, two portions each aimed at the apparent focal points of the tehorumathalluamassamassa, as if to persuade them to sleep. His mind gropes for a conceptualization of power ...

Spell Recollection and Casting:

----------------------------------------------------------
Spell Recollection (Ex)

Once per hour as a swift action, an amnesiac can attempt to remember any spell from the psychic spell list of her choice from either of the 2 highest spell levels she can cast. When she does, she rolls on Table 2–1: Spell Recollection to determine the result. Because the mental stress of combat brings memories to the surface more easily, the amnesiac adds 1d10 to this roll’s result if she’s in combat when she attempts to recall a spell. Regardless of the result, the amnesiac expends an amnesia slot of the appropriate level for the spell she is attempting to remember; she must cast the spell remembered (if any) using that amnesia slot during the same round, or the spell slot is lost without effect.

Once a spell has been remembered in this way, the amnesiac can cast it as one of her spells known for the rest of the day (even if she failed to cast the spell during the round in which she remembered it), unless spell recollection allowed her to cast a spell of a higher level than she would normally be able to cast.

Table: Spell Recollection
1–10 - The amnesiac is unable to cast spells this round.
11–35 - The amnesiac can’t remember the new spell (but can still cast spells this round).
36–95 - The amnesiac remembers and can cast the new spell.
96+ - The amnesiac can choose to treat this result as 36–95. Alternatively, once per day, she can instead temporarily recall any spell from the psychic spell list that’s 1 level higher than the spell she’s attempting to remember. When she does, her caster level counts as the minimum caster level required to cast the higherlevel spell, and she forgets the spell after it’s cast.

So the Infinite Fool is going to try to remember the 4th level spell 'Forgetful Slumber' spell:
Spell Recollection: 1d100 ⇒ 32

... well, damn. Durn it. Ah, well. (Though I did realize that Hero Lab rounds wrong for this -- but I'd have a different spell anyhow, so this would still have happened. ;) )
----------------------------------------------------------

... and fails to grasp a proper framework for 'quieting' the 'statues'. Nevertheless, his dance and song continues, long sweeps of legs and three-ringed staff bringing him back to face the Voice of the Lost.

"Lady of Lost Songs, the last of your kind, trapped in their amber of sordid life-dreams,
Singing that they may be understood freely, a translator-prisoner who wordlessly screams.
Speak of your wishes, for freedom and life, or for memory lost and oblivion black,
Tell us what you wish for this Splinter'd haven, to see you the sunlight or deepest night's black.
"

The Infinite Fool comes to rest at the end of this -- request? offer? exhortation?? -- with the staff's heel planted firmly upon the ground just above the 'head' of the Spinner of Song, the staff gripped firmly not unlike a seneschal awaiting a response.

Song and Dance Number:
----------------------------------------------------------
Just in case it's necessary, a few Perform rolls:
The Fool: Sing: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (6) + 16 = 22
The Fool: Dance: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (8) + 14 = 22

And for harmony, per se:
Sy'ad: Sing: 1d20 + 30 ⇒ (13) + 30 = 43
Sy'ad: Dance: 1d20 + 26 ⇒ (18) + 26 = 44
----------------------------------------------------------

The Fool stands utterly still for a long moment, contemplating the space he's found himself in. His eyes lift and shift, his head moving but a little, to take in the motions, actions, communications of his erstwhile, perhaps accidental, compatriots. The pressure, the way of the hivelike speech, the silence and suspension of sound and time, all present information to him ... if he were able to grasp its meaning. One thing he suspects, however, is that the speech-manner of Kyoonshar'ah is not needed in this communication, and so he foregoes the song-like composition, though the music and the dance remain as elements of his native speech.

Telepathy, Radiopathy, Musicology, Mycocology:
What /is/ the communication form that the Spinner of Song is using? A type of telepathy, or more akin to a Time Stop with conversation? The latter would be, in its way, somewhat obvious; the former, a variant of sorts on the telepathic bond the group shares. At the moment, I'll use his standard speech.

When his lips part, the musical, gesture-enhanced speech of the Fool's native tongue emerges once more. "Hadrama'aldramaan returns not to Kyoonshar'ah, O Spinner of Songs; it has been generations since he left, and so it may be that he will never return. My name is ... unimportant, perhaps, for I remember it not; call me the Infinite Fool. I and a handful of others are here, dropped for unknown reason upon your shores. Speak to me of your desires, and your intentions, of this Nightflier and what you desired for Hadrama'aldramaan to have done with it. I am Fool, aye, but for the Balance, I am also Judge.

"Speak." And indeed, his posture has subtly changed, his staff no longer that of a seneschal, but instead of a bailiff, charged with overseeing the execution of the law -- and perhaps execution in all senses of the word, for the emphasis of the last word is that of a command, not an entreaty.

The 'conversation' of the others is something he's keeping track of with part of his mind, as it were; to their consideration about reading the notes of Cigar Thane -- Hadrama'aldramaan -- about the very place here makes a part of his mind smile a little. Or you could simply be courteous and speak to the one with whom he spoke. Which is what I'm doing at the moment, he tells them via their shared mental link.

The only reason anyone else knows anything is because the Octopuses are immortal and remember previous worlds, and told each of the characters playing at that point some information they remembered about the age they're from.

The Unfettered Prince listens carefully to the Aeon Priest's tone and watches his body language.

Sense Motive to determine whether the Aeon Priest is being honest about the opening of the gate to Kyoonsha'rah being entirely unexpected: 1d6 + 20 ⇒ (1) + 20 = 21

The Unfettered Prince: Sense Motive:

To be perfectly honest, he was sort of hoping that your entry might open it, and allow thus permit the Aeon Priest the ability to further his study of this strange dimension.

The Unfettered Prince seems amused.

"Aeon Priest, I doubt that you are upset over this turn of events. But I do not begrudge you a look after your offers of assistance."

The local anchorite regards Cal with an unfeigned expression of utter confusion,

"What's a 'Protestant' and a 'Catholic'? I've never heard of either of these terms. I am a representative of the Amber Pope in Qi, titular head of the Order of Truth."

The cleric smiles and nods sagaciously before yelling at the departed youth,

"Hey there Giralt, are you about done yet?"

The dark mantle of night
The intense feeling of falling.
The sharp impact of hitting and being enveloped by water.
The sense of slowly stopping from the impact.

He is underwater. That much he knows. He also knows that he's not breathing, which if fortunate, because he would surely be drowning. He's also naked, save for a strange-looking ring, with a star rune on the top. How do I know it's a star rune?

He blinks. Who am I? What am I doing here? Under the waves, not drowning. This is strange.

As if on cue, the loquacious youth reappears at the entrance of the Conjugatorium, panting noticeably and carrying a large tome bound with red hide under one arm, and dragging a ponderous metal chest under the other.

"Here I am!"

The Unnamed Elf notices that he appears to have landed in relatively shallow coastal waters. The tide is not especially strong, and the currents are clear so that he can easily see straight to the sea bed. The floor of this stretch of ocean appears to be made of fine white sand, and is littered with a collection of large boulders. These and the outcroppings of stone that pierce the sand intermittently are festooned with brightly colored coral. Schools of fish with flashing scales dart in out of the rainbow colored forest.

A body floating lazily in the water starts to stir. "Oh, Visitors. Wait visitors to what? To here. Wait, where is here? Why did you come here? Wait, this here is much different than my previous here. Hey, does any one know who is in charge here?"

A humanish man steps out of the water and stretches. He is wearing navy robs darker by the water and has features slightly reminaisiten of an Eastern dragon.

A very good question, the Fool temporizes to those present in the flesh. He does, however, continue to speak aloud in his peculiar song-and-dance-like speech.

His words to the Singer are more thoughtful as he continues. "The Nightflyer is a ship, then, of sea or sky or stars. Tell me about the singing spheres; tell me also of your intentions should you be returned to the physical. You sound as a host, a multitude; are you one, or are you many? Would you be a plague upon the land, or peaceful and cooperative? I have vague certainties of being witness and defending against horrors, and I would not unleash such if it is within my power to prevent it. Speak truth."

And he bends his focus upon the sequestered psyche, using all his capabilities to determine the truthfulness of her words -- not the factualness, but her belief, particularly whether or not she is attempting to deceive him -- and, in fact, the last words are a suggestion for her not to do so, though he still listens carefully.

Currently, both of you can only communicate through mental communication using the language known as The Truth, which is the equivalent of Common in the Steadfast, a group of nine kingdoms in this area of the setting.

I'm a bit unclear on the mechanics of the 'lie detector test' -- what am I rolling against here. Need to clarify that before I respond.
