End Combat

Gathered in the building are the keches’ spoils: a potion of protection from arrows, salve of slipperiness, a wand of charm animal (45 charges), a bronze armband (worth 50 gp), a crystal decanter (worth 150 gp), a black jade idol of a bloated frog demon (worth 500 gp), a silver medallion
depicting a discus thrower (worth 200 gp), and 105 GP in mixed ancient coinage.

Just assuming you can ID them. IDing items seems like a not-fun way to delay the inevitable.

"Should we survive this adventure, it will certainly prove lucrative. Alas, I think only the arrows will be of use to us in the immediate future," Garland observed once all the treasures were collected and categorized. "Still, it is good that we neutralized these foes now. Given how hostile they were to us, they would have been a threat to our comrades."

If there was nothing else of note in the building, Garland began looking for another place that he and his allies could investigate.

"Rich, indeed!" Cica says with wide eyes. "The demon idol is a bit creepy, but I'm sure some collector would pay good gold for that too."

Before leaving this building, we should look into if it can be locked / protected (in which case it could be a good base of operations), and if we can see anything of interest from the roof.

There are two notable locations nearby:

4 on map
A pentagonal building protrudes from the water here, its upper floors reaching thirty feet above the lake that has swallowed its lower stories. Strangely, no plants at all grow upon the building’s roof or walls—walls that seem strangely muted in color compared to other buildings in the area.

3 on map
This one-hundred-foot-high ziggurat is capped by a hundred-foot-tall spire of stone. The sides of the ziggurat’s tiers are carved with images of mounds of treasure and merchants trading wares.

"I think we should explore both. The building with no plants would not be a good place, I think. Something bad must be there, that would keep the plants away. The one with treasures on the outside will make people curious. When the others get here, that one will be where they will want to explore first," Ilistra surmises.

Cica will switch to Owl focus (+4 to Stealth) for the approach. She'll also cast Longstrider (+10' speed for 1 hour) while concealed a bit back from the building.

The southwest corner of this ziggurat has not weathered the passage of time as well, in part due to this district’s slow subsidence back into the lake. A sizable sinkhole here runs along the side of the ziggurat, providing access to a cavern below the ziggurat. The smell of some kind of manure is strong as the explorers approach the hole. Splatters of aerial droppings of immense size coat the rim of the hole.

Does anyone want to look into or go into the cavern?

Cica sees a 40-foot-diameter cavern below the ziggurat. A five foot deep swampy pool fills the bottom of this cave—this pool is tainted with guano from the denizen’s inhabitant, an immense creature. A night bat of gargantuan size hangs in the cave. Its wingspan must be close to sixty feet across. For the moment it did not appear to hear or see Cica sneaking up.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It's a single cavern, only 40' across. You can see the whole thing, it doesn't lead anywhere else. It's just a medium sized cave that the bat is holing up in to nest/bed/lair from what you can see.

If you want to go up into the ziggurat you can, but to save time the only 'thing of interest' here is this bat cave. The structure is covered in complex carvings and reliefs, ala ancient Egypt or Mesoamerica. Given days of study and the appropriate historical expertise it might be possible to learn from them. The obelisk itself is clearly magical, but you still have no idea what it does or how to operate it, if one can operate it. The entire complex seems set up similar to a temple, like it was probably used in mass rituals during ancient times, but it doesn't appear to be dedicated to any deity in particular.

Wherever you go next, I still need another stealth check from Cica for her to get away from the cave without the bat noticing her.

Batception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29

As Cica begins to creep away from the monstrous beast's den, she steps on a twig. The sound is so minor that at first she thinks nothing of it. Then she glances over her shoulder, just to be sure. The bat's massive ears are pointed right at her, and its huge, globular, beady eyes focus in on her.

It unleashes a hypersonic barely audible shriek as it launches into the air!

As the blinding effect clears, the flaming bat shrieks in fury. The bat blots out the sky as it turns on the tiny fire-ape who keeps burning it. It swoops down and snaps at her with its huge jaws.

Move 40', attack Ilistra
Attack: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (17) + 16 = 33
Damage: 2d8 + 11 ⇒ (2, 1) + 11 = 14
Snatch: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (7) + 24 = 31

Just like it did with Cica, the bat snatches Ilistra up, then begins flapping its wings as hard as it can, preparing to gain altitude.

Garland is up, it's currently 30' from him and 15' off the ground. Then it will be round 4, and Cica and Ilistra will be up unless something drastic happens. Ilistra is grappled and 15' off the ground, Cica is 20 feet from the bat/Ilistra combo opposite side from Garland.

Pyrokineticist (HP 65/77; Nonl: 7, AC: 19, T: 15, FF: 15; CMB +4, CMD 18; F +10, R +10, W +3; Perc: +13; Burn: 1/7 Buffer 1)

Ilistra shrieks as she's snatched up into the air by the creature. Her body immediately becomes painfully hot to the touch, causing the jaws holding her to burn and blister!

Searing Flesh: one point of fire damage for any natural attacks, double that if I'm grappled. So it's taking two points of fire damage per round as long as it maintains the grapple.
By accepting 1 point of burn, you can increase this damage by 1 point per 4 kineticist levels you possess until the next time your burn is removed. You can increase the damage in this way up to seven times.
Ill take a point of burn to double that for four damage.

Noted, I'll add that to the ongoing burning damage. Just for clarity's sake, you're in its mouth. It hasn't used its claws yet.

"Ilistra!"

Having few other options, Garland once again throws another burst of holy light at the bat.

Garland and Luna move 30 feet closer to the bat. Garland again casts Burst of Radiance on the bat. The spell has a minimum range of 400 feet, so range isn't an issue. He takes care to aim the spell in a way that avoids catching Ilistra in the blast radius.

The bat needs to make a DC 16 reflex save or be blinded for 1d4 ⇒ 2 turns. If it succeeds, then it's only dazzled for 1d4 ⇒ 4 turns.

Relfex save: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16

End of Round 3

Begin Round 4

Ilistra shrieks as she's snatched up into the air by the creature. Her body immediately becomes painfully hot to the touch, causing the jaws holding her to burn and blister!

Cica is up!

Focus, girl! Ilistra's life is on the line here.

Cica steels herself against the pain in her ribs, aims for the beast's heart, and looses her arrow.

Hindering shot+tiger: 1d20 + 7 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 7 + 2 + 1 = 27
Damage+Deadly & Hindering Shot (below): 1d8 + 5 + 1 + 2d10 ⇒ (8) + 5 + 1 + (1, 7) = 22

Swift: Animal Focus: Tiger (+2 DEX), buffing INIT and to-hit
Stnd: Hindering Shot (spend MF to make it a deadly shot)
. . Hindering Shot Your successful deadly shot leaves the weapon or ammunition used for the attack lodged in the wound, making it difficult for the target to move and react. The target takes a -2 penalty to attack rolls, AC, and CMD; multiple uses of this ability stack, increasing the penalty by an additional -2 per projectile lodged in the target. The target may remove a single projectile as a move action, or may remove multiple as a full-round action
. . Bleed 2
Move: draw and nock an arrow as a move action, regaining focus.
.
EVERYONE Assuming that hit, now the thing is bleeding...so if we can get it to spit out Ilistra, perhaps we can find cover and it will just bleed out.

The shaft sinks into the bat's neck, wounding it further.

Burning damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3

75 damage so far.

The bat drops the burning hot woman and instead tears into her, hoping to end the fiery threat.

Attacks on Ilistra: 1d20 + 16 - 1 ⇒ (14) + 16 - 1 = 291d20 + 11 - 1 ⇒ (19) + 11 - 1 = 291d20 + 11 - 1 ⇒ (5) + 11 - 1 = 15

Damage: 1d8 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 131d8 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

Garland is up, it's currently 30' from him and 15' off the ground. Then it will be round 5, and Cica and Ilistra will be up unless something drastic happens. Ilistra is on the ground beneath the bat who is 15' up, Cica is 20 feet from the bat/Ilistra combo opposite side from Garland.
