Kahtia also shudders when Charles dons the mask, and she admonishes the paladin as well. "Charlemange -- there are artifacts in the Desolation that will kill you if you treat them so cavalierly. Be careful!"

Looking at the tall orc, she continues, "Drot'ook. You should heed my words as well. That staff may allow you to control the most fearsome of the undead, but so too might it stain your soul with its very touch. We need to study these items carefully, my friends."

Inspecting the rest of the room, light on her feet as her robes sweep and flow with her movements, the mage looks to the others. "We should away, back to that treasure room, and then leave as quickly as we can once we have filled out pockets and sacks. The sands can shift in these places quickly, burying that which was once exposed in a matter of hours."

Charles reaches for the mask to remove it but then stops. "It's not that I'm against taking the mask off, Tess. But it offers something I didn't think anyone would be able to ever give. The ability to fly. If you think about it, getting out of here will be considerably safer and easier for all of us.

We'll collect the things we want, I'll help everyone across the dangerous gap area and then bring up all of the treasures, after that I'll give the mask to Lemuel."

He looked over at Kahtia imperiously. "Your caution is noted, Kahtia, but as far as I can tell, these items seem only to be relics of power, helping those that used them maintain it as such. I doubt they would have lasted as long or been powerful enough to build places such as these were they to have terrible drawbacks.

That said, I do find the practice of Necromancy distasteful and while the ability to control such things was useful to us, perhaps it would be best if it were outside the hands of lesser individuals. The Sheikh of Oasis will be pleased to have these things brought to him."

Tesswyn crosses her arms. "Fine. Let's get the treasure, fly out of here, and be done with this already."

The rogue stalks off back down the hall to begin searching and cataloging the treasures in the previous room.

M Rattus norvegicus

You head back into the treasure room, leaving the undead to wallow in the pit, likely forever trapped.

In five walled room there is:

A long row of mummified human heads upon pikes. Their captured gear is placed reverently at the base of the pike.

A series of low shelves that contain large glass jars filled with an ocher liquid. These bottles contain specimen of fingers, ears, penises and foreskins of those he triumphed over.

Large taxidermy of a bear, a lion, a roc and a giant snake are mounted on display.

A smallish bone throne with the gold flecking from it. (Smallish relative to the giant throne you encountered earlier; the one here comfortably seats an adult human).

A black chest (previously revealed these contents, so let's assume you open it first. It is not trapped.):

Inside is a stack of heavy papyrus with an ancient language written on in.

Lemuel jumps in, No! Don't touch those! They've been down here for centuries! Who knows how fragile they are. Please, let someone who knows what they're doing handle them.

Later, Lemuel will inform you that the text contains much of Anak'Hainumen's history, as well as a list of names written in an that is said to be the souls of those Anak’hainunem captured and feasted upon to prolong his life.

Three coffers.

The corpses of eighteen mummified servants placed against the walls that were entombed with Anak’hainunem to provide service to him in the afterlife.

If you haven't made a will challenge roll for Charles' new mask, please do so.

M Rattus norvegicus

Tesswyn meticulously searches every thing she can, discovering a single trap in the throne. If you sit on the throne, a spike shoots up.

Other than that, the room appears to be safe. The three coffers are full of silver coins.

Everyone roll 2d9 and 2d6.

"Thanks for your concern Khatia, but I think I'm gonna be alright." Gärwin smiles at the Sorceress's fussing, but stubbornly decides to push on. He looks ready to call it a day, but the promise of treasure puts a spring in his step. Searching the coffers, the clinking of silver brings life back into the dwarf. He watches the silver flow through his hands and contemplates that this is the most money he's ever seen.

M Rattus norvegicus

In addition to everything you've found so far, you some special items hidden within all the other treasures and equipment.

Rune-inscribed leather hand wraps. You make all Stregth and Agility attack and challenge rolls with 1 boon for 1 minute. This object has one use per Rest. You cannot wear gauntlets or gloves with it.

A kopesh scrawled with runic symbols and has a knotted silk cord attached to the handle. It performs as a normal sword (damage 1d6 +2) and on an attack roll of 20+, you may perform a second attack on a different adjacent foe.

An oblong leather container which houses a small storm. The wielder may remove the cover and cause a single bolt of lightning to launch at a target within medium range. Perform a Perception attack vs. the target’s Agility. If struck, suffers 1d6 +2 damage and must then perform a Strength challenge with 1 bane or become stunned for 1 round. This object has one use.

A clay tablet with magical writing on it. This incantation will create a field of force around you for one minute. The field has Health 10. For the duration, when you would take damage, the field takes the damage instead. If the field’s damage total equals its Health, the effect ends immediately.

A helmet fitted with a rhinoceros horn. This single horned helmet allows the user to make a triggered attack to an adjacent foe other than the target of your regular attack. A successful attack will render 1d6 damage. You receive a +1 bonus to your Perception checks. If you charge a foe, you may also push them two yards beyond where they were last standing. Test Strength vs. target’s Agility or Strength (whichever is lower).

Bandages with arcane writing. Utilizing these bandages, the
target gains +10 temporary health for 1 hour. This item has one use.

A potion of healing.

Mitre of the Hierophant. is gaudy hat allows any Priest wearing it to cast Create Holy Symbol (Theurgy Utility 0) and Censure (Theurgy Attack 1) each, once per day.

Moveable Rod. This rough cut, clumsy, three foot long, thick iron rod with a large bolt on the end seems to have no use. If pressed against a heavy solid object, the wielder may move it as if it had no weight whatsoever. After a single use the rod will have no further function.

A leather bracelet with a spell inscribed on it. Single use incantation, to cast Call Medium Animal, as the Primal 2 spell.

M Rattus norvegicus

You have found all the treasure you can (unless you want to go searching in the bone put again).

From here, you can carry out anything that's feasible for one person to carry, but if you want to pull out any of the larger items (coffers or anything bigger), you'll have to roleplay leaving the tomb and roll some dice to unsure you don't lose your stuff or die in the process.

After the second leaving of the tyrant king, Drot commands the brute to turn on its old allies in the pit. It dives in, swinging and bashing the other undead.

Dark Magic Boons: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 1) = 7
Mask Insanity: 1d20 - 1 + 4 ⇒ (17) - 1 + 4 = 20

Drot was surprised at the power of the mask, it would certainly be a great tool for someone who could truly utilize its power. Though Charles now radiated an oppressive authority, Drot was moved to purposefully counter it.

"I agree fully Charles! These tools, in the hands of lesser beings, could bring destruction of the highest degree to the land. Perhaps it would be best if the scholars of ancient magics and knowledge held on to the Death Mask. Kahtia and myself are better equipped to handle any delayed magical counter measures the artifacts might hold. Just as Tesswyn is better equipped to disable the physical counter measures left here to deter tomb raiders..."

Drot holds out his hand to Charles expectantly. His face rests at its usual inquisitive demeanor, but he holds eye contact with the paladin instead of shifting away and around as he is known to do.

"Ah, you mistook my meaning, Drot'ook. The "lesser beings" I spoke of were the hands of the untested. Not like us, we have been tempered by trials and challenged death on numerous occasions."

He met Drot'ooks eyes. "But tell me, did you not feel a rush of intent behind the item the moment you picked up the war scepter? Did it not speak to you its intent?"

As the time came, Gärwin resigned himself. They had to walk through the painting room, and this time, there'd be no escaping his allies. "Alright, I'll do it, jes' pull me back if summit happens." The dwarf stands upon the throne awaiting for it to ascend. As it does, the dwarf closes his eyes and it was a couple moments before he could bear to even peek at what he was looking at, but eventually he saw what truly lay before him.

"It's like one of those puzzle boxes, the 'ole thing looks like nonsense till it all comes together! Well inn't that neat!" Gärwin seems modestly surprised by the whole experience, but keeps his wits about him as it was time to start haulin' coin. While partially considering bringing one of the taxidermies as a sort of trophy, Gärwin is keen to return to a cool bed and a colder drink.

"For every insight there is to be had in this loathsome tomb, there are three horrors that will haunt us for the rest of our days, Gär," Kahtia says aloud as the dwarf comes down from the throne. She then watches Tess scout back towards the surface, keen to leave the dank and unholy place.

Noting that Charles is contemplating taking the massive sword, the mage offers her opinion. "I can get that down for you, paladin, but carrying it to the surface -- and through the Desolation -- will be quite a chore. What are you thinking?"

M Rattus norvegicus

Nay unresolved issues, RP, or anything else, please post it in the RP room and repost here when done. We can retcon anything major.

You make your way up out of the tomb. Getting up the center put is challenging, but with security ropes and spells, you make your way up. Climbing up out of the slope is easier this time, mostly due to Kahtia's wind spell she cast early on, removing much of the thin later of slippery sand.

Outside, you discover that your horses are still alive; the shelter is still there. The desert is still hot. It's about the middle of the day.

Gärwin walks up to his horse and empties one of his remaining waterskins into his cooking pot, letting the horse drink. "It's good yer doin' ok. You're a good horse Dumpy." The dwarf whispers to his horse while affectionately patting its flank. Turning to their newest companion, the dwarf seems amiable.

"I think it's high time we talked a bit more about ye, Sorceress. We found tha' man ye were lookin' fer. What're yah gonna dew now?" The dwarf talks as he loads his horse for travel, looking pleased with their haul.

"My main concern was to recover the ancient book Withir Buckling took from the Tower Arcane," Kahtia says to the dwarf, not being entirely honest with him, or with herself. "Now I must protect it, keep it out of the hands of people who would try to resurrect the likes of Anak'Hainumen."

When the mage had emerged, exhausted and filthy but jubilant from the black pyramid, she smiled broadly, opening her arms to the skies and luxuriating in the feel of the blazing sun on her face and skin. Tesswyn (and perhaps Charles, and perhaps even Drot'ook and Gärwin) briefly wondered if the sorceress was going to disrobe yet again, but all she did was slip off her sandals and walk across the sand, enjoying the way the sand was clutching at the day's heat, holding it greedily.

"I am far from home, and from safety, Gär. I will accompany you all southward if that's where you are going. Back to the Oasis?"

Female Human Rogue/Auspex/Daemonhost Level 8 | S11, A15, I13, W10 | Health 40; Damage 0 | D19 | Move: 10 | Insanity: 3 | Corruption: 0 | Fortune: Yes | Status: Normal | Appearance

"Oasis, then even further south, back to the Northern Reach," Tesswyn says, eyeing Kahtia's bare feet. "We plan on teleporting back there. You can come if the spell has room for you, I guess."

After a beat, she asks, "Where is your home, anyway?"

Female Human Magician/Wizard/Arcanist Level 8|S10 A11 I14 W14|Hlth: 29|Dmg: 0|Def: 10 (AA:12)|Mv: 10|Pwr: 4|Insanity: 0|Corruption: 0|Fort: 2|Status: A.Armor

Even Kahtia's feet are beautiful. They are tanned and lean and well-formed, and they are covered in the same intricate tattoos that Tess and the others saw over much of the rest of the mage's bare, inviting flesh earlier.

"You... have teleportation magic?" Glancing at Drot'ook, the dark haired woman raises a hand to keep the blazing sun from her eyes. "An incantation? That would be worth a small fortune; they are rare and highly prized. If I may examine it, I can tell you how far it will take you, and how many its magics would envelope. The Northern Reach is preferable to me over Oasis, so if it is possible, I will gladly accompany you. Your offer is generous."

To the question of where her home is, Kahtia smiles a little wistfully. "That is a complicated question, Tesswyn. As a Woad girl, the Reach was my home, though we traveled far and wide, and never remained in one spot very long. More recently I have studied at the Tower Arcane, on its floating island above the capital city, Caecrus. But I have yet to decide what remains for me there, and whether I should return. The city is... tumultuous."

"Ah, yes. Floating island. Interesting," Tesswyn says. She tries to play at being nonchalant, but it's clear to see the wizard's words have piqued her curiosity. Still, the rogue busies herself with striking camp and resists the urge to ask a million questions about the Tower Arcane. She wouldn't want to seem actually interested in what Kahtia has to say!

"It is, at that," Kahtia replies, taking note of Tess' terse, measured response. She, too, begins work on packing up.

"There is considerable debate in the Tower about what to do about... the fall of the Emperor. As you might imagine. The city is in chaos, and the Tower is not much better."

Sometime earlier

As the party managed to make their way out of the tomb, Charles felt a sense of calmness and understanding of the world around him. They had certainly gained quite a lot for coming here, more than he'd bargained for, but it had been a good trade in their favor.

"We'll see to the horses, then after that we should get a good distance away from here as fast as we can.

When we make camp later, I'll take first watch."

M Rattus norvegicus

You head out I to the sun baked sands, spending some hours traveling towards Oasis before camping. The night passes peacefully.

Gärwin, having the final watch, feels it first. A deep rumble in the ground.

Everyone else can start to feel it, too, but whether it wakes them is a different question.

Then, Gärwin sees it.

Gärwin:
You see a mound of dirt moving rapidly towards you, as if there was a giant creature tunneling through the sands. The mound of first stops, but you can still feel the tremors - it must have gone deeper.

The horses are starting to prance about, worried about what's going on.

Then a gigantic worm breaks the ground and bites one of the horses. Tendrils come out of its mouth as it grabs the horse and pulls it into its gaping maw.

Basically, it's a fantasy version of this

Then, the sound of a screaming horse fills the air, and everyone wakes up.

Everyone has completed a Rest. Heal one Healing Rate worth of damage. Regain anything that resets on a Rest. Remember that spells do not come back until you spend a minute or longer preparing (or praying, studying, etc) for your daily spells. Remember it takes time to don armor. Gärwin can be assumed to already have his armor.

Slow Turn, if we're doing that already. Also, I -love- Tremors.

Kahtia wakes and stumbles from her tent half-dressed at the ruckus, her hair a tumble as she squints against the sunlight, raising one hand to block it so that she can see what's happening. She swears softly and ducks back inside once she sees the monster, searching for her magestone and dagger, for the things that she cast aside the night before when she finally collapsed into a deep sleep...

Basically a couple of move actions. :)

Tesswyn didn't sleep well. Her rest was plagued by maddening nightmares, half-glimpsed visions of possible futures that might or might not come. She awakens with a start, sweat plastering the bedroll to her naked body, head pounding. All of her senses are screaming at her, and she struggles to tone down the input to make sense of what was happening.

Somebody is rummaging around in the tent--Kahtia? Tesswyn's blood goes cold as memories of last night come rushing back to her. "Oh, f$~*," she whispers.

That's when the rogue noticed that the ground is rumbling, and that horses are screaming outside the tent. "Oh, F+#@!" she shouts. Throwing the bedroll off of her, she grabs the closest clothes available--

The night had been rough on the dwarf, the things he'd seen the days before had started to settle into his mind. Tossing and turning, eventually exhaustion took over and the dwarf tumbled into sleep. The inky blackness of a dreamless night was comforting in a way, as he woke with a start when Khatia called him for his watch.

As the night slowly changed into morning, Gärwin contemplated to himself. Cigar, as always, in his mouth. Things had changed for him quite a bit in little more than three years. Perhaps it was time to take things more seriously, look into more than just killing the demons he hated so much. He had allies and titles to his name, something the shifty outlaw of just a few years prior could only dream of."Drosva... is it alright? Maybe I should try lookin' into what I could do. Actually make plans for the future. I'd think you'd like that... I hope yeh can forgive me for the endless drinkin' and making' a fool o' meself."

Trouble never waits to show up though, as the sand began to move. Gärwin stood up, at first hoping it was just a trick of the rising sun. Then, the sand parted and a great maw snapped up one of the horses. It was time to take action.

"Trouble, erryone! Looks like some kinda giant worm!" Gärwin shouts and clangs his shield with the pommel of his blade. He made as much noise as a dwarf can, which is a lot. He then charged forward, hoping to somehow save the stricken horse before the creature could kill it.

Charles consciousnesses returned as the ground began to shake beneath him. But when Garwin began to yell his warning, his vision seemed to clear, taking in his otherwise still surroundings and eyes snapped open.

So much had happened yesterday, and yet his mind seemed sharper and his memory and senses were clearer now than they had ever been. Even though he wore very little clothing, sitting up in the morning light it he could tell it was already too hot.

"Tesswyn!" he said in a moment of shock. She wasn't there.

His mind was swirling with details as he stood up and quickly pulled on breeches and buckled on his sword belt. The sword's icy aura helped keep him cool in the night and woke him up faster as he grabbed it.

He threw on his boots. Somewhere in the back of his mind he realized the worry was partly because he knew he would have woken up had she come back into the tent and partly because her shift had been in the middle of the night. But it was morning and there was no way Garwin or Kahtia would have missed her.

There's a rational explanation. Maybe she couldn't sleep and just stayed up with the others...

Somewhere a horse screamed. He couldn't think on it anymore. The rumbling continued, he looked at his armor and shook his head. It would take too long to meaningfully don any of that especially by himself. Instead he grabbed his shield, put on his holy symbol, then slid on the Death Mask and rushed outside.

"How many are there?" she calls to Gär, eyes the shifting sands.

Tesswyn raises her staff warily, ready to blast any more monsters that emerge.

Charles rushed out from his tent into the morning desert. He was shirtless as he emerged, though he wielded his shield and wore his sword belt.

He looked around at the others, briefly pausing to take note of Tesswyn and Kahtia, before he rushed over to where Garwin and Drot'ook were.

"Garwin, what's going on?! What's causing that rumbling?"

"Careful, there's some kinda worm thing! I only saw th' one, but he's a big sucker!" Gärwin surveys the camp, looking for where the creature might strike next.

M Rattus norvegicus

The worm digs away through the sands. You can see the mound it leaves behind as it tunnels near the surface, away from the group.

It has a movement speed of 8, so it's not very fast. And while you can't directly see it, you can see where it it if you have any abilities that let you target something you cants directly see.

If no one does anything, it will flee with its prize. And the party will be down one horse. By random rolling, that horse was Tesswyn's.

Fast Turn

Narrowing her eyes as she sees the mound moving away, Kahtia reaches for the distant creature as she casts another spell -- this one intended to make the creature surface and come back towards the waiting steel wielded by Drot'ook, Charles, and Gärwin.

Casting Bewitch, trying to bring that bad boy back.

Spell (3/5): BEWITCH (ENCHANTMENT ATTACK 0)
*Target One creature that can see you within long range
*Make an Intellect attack roll against the target’s Intellect. On a success, the target is moved up to its Speed.
Attack Roll 20+ You also regain the casting of this spell.

Intellect: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14

M Rattus norvegicus

Kahtia casts her spell, but unfortunately the creature cannot see her and continues on its way.

Combat over. It has escaped with Tesswyn's horse.

People are now able to spend your time with rituals, prayers, etc to regain your spells - sans any spells cast since you've woken up.

Drot brings his hammer back around as the worm makes its escape!

Warhammer: 1d20 + 3 - 1d6 ⇒ (7) + 3 - (2) = 8

It's not quick, but its movements are not easy to predict compared to his normal foes and he swings too high.

Tesswyn snarls in frustration as the worm escapes with her mount. "Gods damn it! Of course, it would have to eat my horse out of all of them! The Desolation sucks!" She kicks a mound of sand in anger.

As the adrenaline from the sudden but brief peril wears off, she looks around to see Charles, half-naked, wearing the horrific death mask from the tomb. She realizes the compromising position she's in, wearing Kahtia's clothes, and she shies away from the looming figure of the paladin.

"Come on, let's get our s*## back together. The sooner we leave this place, the better," she mutters, studiously ignoring the situation.

Kahtia growls softly when her magic fails to take hold of the creature, and she stares out into the desert for a few seconds before turning back to her companions.

"I'm sorry -- I wasn't fast enough with my spell. Tesswyn is right. Chances are good there are more worms. We should make haste. I will dress and be ready soon."

Walking past the angry rogue on the way to her tent, the mage cocks her head slightly as she quietly adds, "I knew those would fit you, Tess, wear them as long as you like..."

Before packing up, Kahtia will mediate for a few moments for her spells inside her tent. Naked, of course.

When the danger is apparently gone, Charles looks over toward Garwin.

"Garwin, round up the horses and bring them to the center of camp. If that was the only one, we'll be lucky. Now we know what to look for."

"Alright, we're striking camp."

Charles heads back to his tent to finished getting dressed and put on his armor.

"Right, I'm on it." The dwarf slowly collects the startled horses, calming each one before slowly leading them to the center of their camp. By the time he had finished, most of the others seemed presentable enough and Gärwin joined them in packing up.

"It's gonna be a long day, but we just might make it if we push through th' night. What'd you all think?" Gärwin places his saddle back upon his horse, getting ready to hit the road.

It took Drot only a few minutes to gather his things and be ready. The heat was oppressive but it was nothing he hadn't already been through. He rejoined Gärwin while they waited for the others. Hand on the scepter, gripping it, but leaving it attached to his belt.

"We've been away from home for so long, so much has happened. It's hard to remember what I would do to pass the time... I want to thank you, friend. You've done a lot for us, and when faced with what seemed like the end, you demonstrated exactly what it means to be the valiant knight that you are. We could not have done this without you Sir Gildenbeard, I own you at least a full night of tavern crawling."

Drot chuckled and patted the dwarf on the shoulder as he made a genuine promise to take the knight out in a manner he was accustom to. When Gärwin offered up a potential plan, Drot softly agreed.

M Rattus norvegicus

Everyone packs up and starts headed towards Oasis.

It is hot. Everyone make a strength challenge roll with one bane or become Fatigued. If you are already Fatigued, gain 1 Insanity.

You make good progress throughout the day, despite the tired horses. As evening comes, clouds start to gather. The sky darkens. Soon, rainless lightning flashes in the sky repeatedly. The sky is lit up with each flash. Within an hour, it it gone, but not without taking its toll.

One person must make an Agility Challenge Roll. This roll will account for the entire group. On a success, the group will take half damage; on a failure - full damage. Damage is split up evenly amongst the entire group, and any one person can opt to take damage to prevent it from another.

Lightning Damage: 8d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 3, 5, 3, 1, 1, 4) = 24

There are 12 living creatures in your group, so that will be 2 damage each or 1 on a success.

Female Human Rogue/Auspex/Daemonhost Level 8 | S11, A15, I13, W10 | Health 40; Damage 0 | D19 | Move: 10 | Insanity: 3 | Corruption: 0 | Fortune: Yes | Status: Normal | Appearance

Tesswyn guides the group, avoiding the worst of the lightning.

Agility: 1d20 + 4 + 1d6 ⇒ (6) + 4 + (4) = 14

M Rattus norvegicus

Forgot some things....

Tesswyn:
You have cheated on your significant other. However, due to the fact that you're slightly insane and not entirely mentally stable, you have a choice.

You can choose to take one point of corruption (to be given if Charles ever discovers the truth), or you can choose to take 1d3 points of insanity.

Kahtia:
You have manipulated an individual to cheat on their significant other, for no other purpose than your own pleasure. This in turn has put this person in the position to either cause significant mental harm to their loved one or to engage on a path of lying and deceit.

Due to this, you gain 1 point of Corruption.

Arcane Armor means no roll is required for heat exhaustion, I think. Will presume she needs to use three of them -- 12hrs worth. Also, taking 1 damage from the lightning.

After her morning meditations, Kahtia packs up and heads off with the others. The day is a blistering one, but her magics keep her cool as she rides in relative silence, making some small talk with the others when not spending time reading an ancient book propped in her lap. She steers clear of Tesswyn, as its abundantly clear the woman is ashamed of what happened the prior night. Kahtia's feelings, however, are difficult to injure -- she smiles as she remembers curling Tess' toes and the woman having to bite on a pillow to keep from crying out.

The lightning is unpleasant, but at least no one is badly hurt.

Corruption accepted. EEK! This lady could go downhill fast with her carnal appetites.
